Australian producer @DJAlexPreston has your “Friday Night” off and grooving

ALEX PRESTON, Friday Night (EP)

Following up his well-received house party EP Get It Started, Australia’s Alex Preston is back with another deft set of songs designed with your “Friday Night” in mind.  He doesn’t stray too far from the classic 90’s influenced house songs from Get It Started, making Friday Night almost like a second chapter.  The songs are full of fun vocal samples which make them stand outs in clubs, so no wonder that DJ’s like Richie Hawtin, Mahalo, TOCADISCO, and others are supporting them.  There’s the title track, “Hip Shakin’ Mumma”, and in particular “Don’t You Mind”, which should get your weekend off to an impressive start!

Party to this: “Get It Started” is the new EP by Australia’s @DJAlexPreston

ALEX PRESTON, Get It Started (EP)

You’ll recall how impressed I was recently by Alex Preston’s retooling of Marvin Gaye’s classic rendition of “Heard It Through The Grapevine” into a contemporary house track.  It’s followed up by an EP of house originals, Get It Started, and the Australian producer/DJ is game for setting the tone to your party on the right note.  Take it to the clubs, and a couple of these songs would sound massive.  The EP gets better as it goes along – the title song is the weakest, but good for kicking things off; “That’s How I Feel” impresses with some fine guitar work; “Around” features a soulful vocal sample that seems awfully familiar, and will have club goers lip-syncing to its sassy chorus; but best of all is “Take It Easy”, an excellent feel-good song for a Friday night to get your weekend going full tilt, again with some fun sampled dialogue to give the song its theme, and some horns that make it memorable (not sure if I’m hearing a Pigbag sample or not in this one).  Alex is clearly very talented at what he does, definitely one to follow, recalling at times an Aussie veteran who I’ve written about and respect greatly named Late Nite Tuff Guy.  Check out the EP at the link above but it’s “Take It Easy” that comes highly recommended most out of all of the songs.

House producer @DJAlexPreston masterfully recrafts….. Marvin Gaye’s “Heard It Through The Grapevine”

MARVIN GAYE, “Heard It Through The Grapevine” (Alex Preston rework) (free DL)

Yes, you are reading this correctly, so do not be afraid 🙂  Australian house producer Alex Preston boldly takes on a Motown classic that should otherwise be untouched, Marvin Gaye’s 1968 chart-topping cover of “Heard It Through The Grapevine”.  In order to make his point, Alex excises the haunting bass work and rhythm track of the original, and replaced it with an amped up, driving house rhythm.  He adds a lot of echo to Marvin’s original emotional vocal, making it sound even more isolated in the face of those hurting, cheating lyrics.  The first three minutes of this rework are an utterly seamless tribute to the original and will have club goers cheering.  The remaining two minutes are technically wonderful mixing handoffs for creative club DJ’s.  Best of all, you can have this update for free for now at the link above.  Alex Preston’s rework of “Grapevine” is a convincing and masterful surprise – more please!!  Reworks like this cannot be done without inbred passion for the source, and it’s a real treat for long-time Motown fans like me.
