“Be Somebody” is the new uplifting anthem from @DillonFrancis featuring Australian singer @EvieIrie

DILLON FRANCIS and EVIE IRIE, “Be Somebody”

If you’re looking for an uplifting anthem of encouragement, then listen no further to “Be Somebody” by L.A.-based superstar producer Dillon Francis featuring the voice of young Australian singer/songwriter Evie Irie.  Released on his own IDGAFOS label through Casablanca/Republic, and already breaking out at US dance radio, “Be Somebody” gets right down to business with a brisk rhythm that makes its short two-and-a-half minute length go even faster.  Evie Irie’s down-to-earth vocal sounds like a blend of Billie Eilish-meets-Dua Lipa, and makes you do a double-take in a ‘where have I heard her’ before kind of moment.  “Be Somebody” has a lot of innate charm and Dillon’s slick style makes it all seamless.  I prefer its “VIP” mix, but there’s a slightly pitched up one by Moodshift, as well as a busier transformation by XIE for you to check out in the EP below where you can appreciate it in all of its variations.

Sweden’s @weareBROHUG offer more pop-friendly, hip hop/R&B-influenced “Be Somebody”

BROHUG, “Be Somebody” (single and club mix)

It’s a real departure from their usual heavier EDM sound, but Swedish trio Brohug return with the more pop-friendly “Be Somebody”.  Although many songs with that title have surfaced of late, “Be Somebody” draws on hip hop and R&B influences with an uncredited female vocal for a song that could be come one of Brohug’s festival favourites in either its single or club mixes. The single mix (above) has a surprising breakdown that fits in quite well, whereas the shorter club mix (below) focuses less on vocal verses and hip hop flavours in favour of deeper, progressive house rhythms and anthemic focus on its title.  Both versions of the song have their positives, but if you think Brohug were all about a specific sound and style then consider yourself proven wrong by “Be Somebody”.

BROHUG play Toronto club Uniun on Friday December 7.

“Be Somebody” is more unique and touching encouragement from Oregon’s @CVBZmusic

CVBZ, “Be Somebody”

Throughout 2017 so far, there are few singer/songwriters who have surprised me more than Oregon’s CVBZ.  And it’s not like his music totally won me over at the first few listens.  The great thing about songs is they get stuck in your head and sometimes the rest of their intentions strike you later.  Such is the case with “Be Like You”, which in its Sean Turk remix is one of my favourites of the year so far.  Following up “Be Like You” and the bold and risky “Vicodin” is third single “Be Somebody”.  Like both songs, it’s full of earnest sentiment that comes from a place deep down where you can fill lyrics with both encouragement and well screw that attitude.  So many young people can relate to these lyrics and I hope “Be Somebody” can find its way through the maze of a today’s music scene to get to the listeners who need it the most.  Musically, its big electronic sound is the right backdrop for its lyrics, and some remixes might help follow up the success “Be Like You” has had with dance music lovers.  Check it out at the link above.
