New UK singer @LostChilduk boldly interprets a sparse rendition of @Madonna’s “Skin”

LOSTCHILD, “Skin” (free DL)

It’s so important when an artist covers a song by someone like Madonna that they either get it right in a straight-forward interpretation, or put a unique spin on it to help make it their own.  New UK pop/R&B singer Lostchild chooses the latter path with his version of “Skin”, originally found on Madonna’s 1997 album Ray Of Light.  I honestly hadn’t heard it in a while and had to go back to hear what Madonna achieved with it 20 years ago from one of her most classic albums, which basked in the cutting edge technology of the time.  Lostchild puts aside the focus on technology, opting for a lingering, sparse arrangement that showcases his restrained but often soulful vocal, which is a throwback for me to 80’s alt.pop singers like Feargal Sharkey (“A Good Heart”) or the late Black (“Wonderful Life”).   “Skin” is even shorter than Madonna’s original 6 minute version but its deliberate pacing provides a what’s-coming-up-next? approach that keeps you plugged into it.  “Skin” is a great introduction to Lostchild, from whom we can now look forward to his own new music.  Download “Skin” for free (under the “More” tab) at the link above.

Quirky & Quiet Retro iTouch Shuffle Mix

Sometimes letting the iTouch go to shuffle comes up with some interesting mixes of music that you wouldn’t put together yourself.  Here’s what I heard on the drive to work this morning.  Pretty quirky and quiet until the last songs – makes me wonder what I’ll hear on the drive home 🙂

Michael Buble “Sway (Ralphi’s Salsation vox edit)” (2004)

Andy Bell “Crazy” (2005 – Electric Blue album)

Tony Stone “This Is Serious (extended mix)” (1988)

Fashion “Dressed To Kill” (1982 – Fabrique album)

Steve Winwood “The Finer Things” (1987)

Jai “Cry Me A River” (1998 – Heaven album)

Book Of Love “I Touch Roses” (1986)

Kaiser Chiefs “Thank You Very Much” (2007 – Yours Truly, Angry Mob album)

Madonna & Justin Timberlake “4 Minutes” (2008)

I’ll try and post links to a few of the more obscure songs later.

Tuned-On! Top 300 of the 2000’s, Part 4 (150-101)

As the numbers get smaller, so the songs begin to be increasingly difficult to talk about without going into many superlatives, so I will probably save those for the Top 50 or so.   When I look at this group of 50 songs, I see mainly songs that energize me or affect me emotionally.  So for every rave up that is Madonna’s “Sorry” or George Acosta’s remix of “Just Another Day” or Nadia Ali’s “Love Story” or Ricky Martin’s “She Bangs” or Alex Gaudino & Crystal Waters’ “Destination Calabria”, there is JC Chasez’s totally underrated and hurtin’ “Until Yesterday”, Stabilo’s almost-sinister “Flawed Design”, Darren Hayes’ very dark “I Like The Way”, Mary J. Blige & The Game’s heartfelt mashup “MJB Da MVP”, the emotions-run-wild in Mika’s “We Are Golden”, Florence & The Machine’s gothic “Rabbit Heart”, and the teen love’s growing pains in David Archuleta’s “Crush”.  Don’t discount the fabulous one-off’s that are “Jerk It Out” by The Caesars or “Summer Jam” by The Underdog Project either!

This will be my last update of this list until after December 29.  I’ll be away after Christmas for a few days but may blog about this and that if I have time.  Merry Christmas to all who celebrate it!
