#BILLCSTop30 #564 – June 24/19

There’s lots of change afoot on the new chart.  The lower rung gets cleaned out and replaced with six debuts which have loads of top-of-the-chart potential!  And speaking of the top, a new #1 has taken over from a bunch of strong favourites, which will all have difficulty leaving the Top 10 any time soon.

The new #1 is also the fastest riser on the chart, something that doesn’t happen often!  And it belongs to Illenium and Jon Bellion with the stunning “Good Things Fall Apart”, soaring 9 to 1.  During the last week, Illenium announced a North American tour and I’m happy to be attending in Toronto on September 28 🙂

M-22, Cedric Gervais and DubVision & SYZZ all slip down as a result of “Good Things Come  Apart” now ruling the chart, and only Mokita’s “Kiss And Tell” (above) and Lost Frequencies & Flynn’s “Recognise” (below) can also move up within the Top 10, advancing 6-5 and 10-9 respectively.

The progressive electronica of Mako’s “Coyote” rounds out the Top 10 moving 11-10, becoming the singer’s 4th Top 10 on this chart.

With the Top 10 pretty much locked down, songs below can only make limited movement and some will break loose of that in two weeks.  That leaves three of our debuts from two weeks ago to get recognized with bigger jumps.  “Don’t Leave Me Lonely” by Mark Ronson featuring American singer YEBBA (above)climbs 23-17, while Switzerland’s Eurovision entry “She Got Me” by Luca Hänni (below) leaps 25-19 , and the soulful pop of “Where Did You Go” by Nick Peters and Jamie Grey (also below) rises 27-22.

So it’s the debuts that do most of the talking this week.  The highest debut at #23 belongs to the dynamic pairing of Don Diablo and CiD, who I saw dropping this song together in Miami in March, a fun grower called “Fever” (above).  Next at #24 is an album track – and I like saying that because it’s from the first full album by EMAN8 (Brandyn Burnette) also called Emanate.  The song is a nice mix of pop and electronica called “Time” (below) and it’s a standout from the album.  It follows lead off single “Amen” onto the chart, which peaked at #15 earlier this year.  At #25 is a returning pair to the chart, US producers and musicians Eric Sharp and Zhao with the catchy “Monday Blues” (also below).  These guys previously charted together in 2016 with “The Thirst” (#7), and Zhao is also the vocalist on both.

I’m not done just yet!  Like Don Diablo, another veteran appearing on the chart for the first time is Borgeous, who arrives with vocalist RUNAGROUND with “Better Anyway” (above) at #26.  Then there’s a delicious slice of melodic deep house courtesy of Italy’s Eric Zava and DJ Mirko B at #28 with “Even In Confusion” (below) featuring the vocals of newcomer Daniel Gorash.  The final debut is yet another entry from the prolific Mahalo this time with Poland’s Milkwish for some more dark deep house “Alone Again” (also below) at #30.  Mahalo and MŌZ are also at #27 with “Go Ahead”, which recently peaked at #4.

#BILLCSTop30 #563 – June 10/19

I’m so glad my big faves from very early Spring have carried over to make my birthday week a very happy place where ever I play the Top 3!  And the rest of the Top 10 is quite active, with three debuts rounding out the chart.

They are of course M-22’s “White Lies” (above), Cedric Gervais & Just Kiddin’s “Good Things” (disco edit) featuring vocalist Kyan (also above), and “Enlighten Me” by Dutch producers DubVision and SYZZ (below) giving the chart the zing it needs at 1-2-3!

MAX is back in the Top 5 for the first time as a lead artist since “Lights Down Low” got to #3 in its Two Friends remix in 2016.  Was I just an early bird on that one, or were y’all late heads?  Anyway, “Love Me Less” (featuring Quinn XCII) climbs 7-4.

Nashville’s Mokita is on his way to the Top 5 for a second time this year with “Kiss And Tell” rising 9-6.  And then there’s his new one “Inside Out” too so watch for it in this space in the near future…

The Chainsmokers acquire their 10th Top 10 since 2015 with “Do You Mean”, featuring Ty Dolla $ign and Canada’s Juno Award-winning bülow moving up 11-7.

The fastest riser on the chart had its video debut today.  Soaring up the chart 20-9 is Illenium & Jon Bellion’s “Good Things Fall Apart”.  This is Illenium’s third Top 10 entry since the late Fall.  Check out that intriguing video above.

Rounding out the newcomers to the Top 10 is Lost Frequencies’ magnetic “Recognise” featuring vocalist Flynn and rising 12-10.

Closing in on the Top 10, with no surprise, is the progressive and experimental “Coyote” from L.A.’s Mako, zipping up the chart 17-11.  This one draws you in with each listen so don’t miss it.

Halifax’s Famba just signed to Sony Canada proper, and he’s on his second radio hit for them.  Easily accessible to dance clubs in its Dallerium remix above is “Swear To God”, advancing 19-12.

Timmy Trumpet’s new anthem “World At Our Feet” finds itself soaring 23-15 in its second appearance.

“Adore You” by Jessie Ware is a quiet, sexy, funky grower and it moves up 22-17.

Taking its cue from a lot of 90’s pop and hip hop music is “We Found Love” by Canada’s Sultan + Shepard who collaborate with Showtek for this reboot of the Heavy D. & The Boyz hit.  It climbs 26-18.

They say some DJ’s don’t dance but in the video for his song “Atypical”, you’ll find Manila Killa busting some impressive moves.  Led by the vocals of GiGi, “Atypical” rises 25-19 culled from Manila Killa’s 1993 release.

The first newcomer is by recent Oscar and Grammy Award winner Mark Ronson who brings along Grammy-winner YEBBA for one of three songs on his album Late Night Feelings.  The sensational “Don’t Leave Me Lonely” arrives on the chart at #23.  Somehow it’s only Mark’s second entry on the chart, the first being “Valerie” with Amy Winehouse in 2007.  YEBBA’s previous 2017 “Evergreen” got to #4, and I expect similar things from “Lonely”.

Next up is the debut entry for Switzerland’s Luca Hänni, who was so fun and engaging with his Eurovision performances with “She Got Me” arriving at #25.  The song ranked 4th overall in Eurovision and deserves to be a worldwide smash.  It’s pretty darned irresistible.

The third new entry of the week at #27 belongs to French producer Nick Peters with a lyrical dance gem in “Where Did You Go”, featuring UK vocalist Jamie Grey.  Nick’s visited the chart before, in 2017 with “No Love In Brooklyn” getting to #4 in partnership with Frank Pierce and Scott Vega.

10/10 (or tenoutoften) is this blog’s new feature where I write about 10 hot and fresh songs in no particular order, for your kind consideration and attention.

I continue to write individual blog posts about certain songs.  That does not mean that songs in the 10/10 lists are any less than those featured individually. 

Writing 10/10 features means I can cover more songs in one shot .  So you get to learn about more new music that I hear but don’t always get a chance to write about.

  • JAY BIRD and DANNI CARRA, “Let You Down” (free download)

“Let You Down” marks a personal best for SoCal producer/remixer Jay Bird.  It’s one of those songs where every aspect has been carefully crafted, balanced, and executed.  With a beautiful melody and danceable rhythm that doesn’t bow to any particular dance sub-genre, “Let You Down” is a warm and inviting story about being dedicated to a special someone.  It also marks another collaboration with singer Danni Carra (check out my blog post about “The Reason”, which was released earlier this year).  “Let You Down” is a generous free download – get it while you can at the link above.

  • PRIZM, “The Prizm”

L.A. based producer Prizm returns after a bit of a break to showcase his melodic side after a few harder edged tracks last year.  “The Prizm” has an uplifting, anthemic quality about it at times, and veers into softer, emotional EDM about half way through before the beats return and lead to a quiet ending.  The song reminds me, production-wise, of others that have come from Sweden in the past few years, using a pitched up vocal to carry it through.  The result is a creative and diverse release that should serve as a springboard for Prizm.  

  • NICK HAGELIN and PXTN, “Good Time”

“Good Time” is a breezy Latin-infused song meant for mid-evenings as the sun is setting.  It comes from always charming Atlanta-based singer/songwriter and ballet dancer Nick Hagelin, about whom I’ve written for many years, including long before his Top 10 finish in Season 10 of “The Voice”.  Taking time to balance raising a young family and maintain his professional dancing while recording and writing songs, “Good Time” marks Nick’s first release in about two years with a nice change of pace, still sounding fresh and improvised at times.  Here he brings along his buddy from “The Voice”, fellow Top 10 finisher Paxton Ingram (here billed simply as PXTN), which adds an in sync energy to the song.  Here’s to more new music from Nick Hagelin!

  • DAVE WINNEL, “Ksamil”

Dave Winnel is an Australian producer/remixer who divides his time between Sydney and The Netherlands, thanks to his work with Armin van Buuren and many others associated with the Armada label.  Only recently starting to release his own material, a four song EP called Lily Of The Valley (The Journey) has arrived from Dave.  Amid some imaginative, more progressive songs comes “Ksamil”, which has a different presence from the other songs.  “Ksamil” is small beach-side village in Albania in which Dave wrote it.  In contrast to some percolating synths, it’s got relaxing and gentle elements that make it perfect for an outdoor festival on a sunny day.  Play this one back-to-back with Tez Cadey’s “Logic” and create your own mini-voyage.

  • JANOS, “Zero”

Janos is a Norway-based Swedish singer, songwriter and musician who has been releasing music for most of this decade, receiving some attention at home and in England.  “Zero” is danceable alternative pop-rock with an outside-of-the-box approach to songwriting.  I’m really not too sure what the song is actually all about but there’s an affable vocal, tight instrumentation and production, as well as a carefree feel that, despite Janos’ European origins, reminds me most of 90’s American bands like Third Eye Blind or The Rembrandts.

  • MOKITA, “Til I Don’t”

Current blog favourite Nashville-based singer/songwriter Mokita continues his sturdy roll of top notch songs with “Til I Don’t”, following “All Into Nothing” (with R3HAB), “London”, and “Kiss And Tell”.  “Til I Don’t” is a quickie at only 2:07 and perhaps his slightest of the four, but it’s tightly crammed with words from Mokita’s always interesting perspective on relationships.

  • NICK PETERS and JAMIE GREY, “Where Did You Go”

18 year old French producer Nick Peters has released a few consistent singles of his own since 2016, while providing remixes for others such as Major Lazer.  Regular blog readers know how much I enjoyed his 2017 collaboration with Frank Pierce and Scott Vega (now known collectively as Juscova) called “No Love In Brooklyn” (#4 on my personal chart).  “Where Did You Go” is top drawer and benefits from anchored deep house beats and rhythms, and a memorable, soulful vocal from British singer Jamie Grey.  The radio edit alters the pace slightly, so go for either version, focused on the beat or the lyricism, as you see fit.

  • GODAMN, “Kickers”

Although they were previously known under other names in the dance music scene, GODAMN is a Swiss production duo who have been getting support from the best in the biz since they emerged under this name in 2017.  Their latest, “Kickers”, is a fun bass house production that would highlight any club DJ’s set and trigger instant reaction from lovers of this sub-genre.  GODAMN have a clever, bouncy club hit in the making with “Kickers” so lend an ear for it this Spring and Summer.

  • AADYSI, “Don’t Need You”

Taking its cue seemingly from both techno-styled trap and science fiction movie themes, NYC producer Aadysi is back with “Don’t Need You”.  Featuring Aadysi’s own vocal, the song starts off with some punchy beats, but slows down into a trap-influenced rhythm which morphs into some unexpected and smartly made progressive synth pop.  “Don’t Need You” then circles back to its heavier edges before a soothing, spacey ending.  It’s a stylish electronic kiss off to a past relationship that’s well worth your attention.

  • AXEL MANSOOR, “Busy”

L.A.-based singer/songwriter Axel Mansoor continues his consistent string of releases with “Busy”.  Ever the interested observer in relationship, Axel provides a convincing story to ensure that you do not forego who and what are right in front of you every day.  A midtempo beat and some well-placed synth work carries a lilting acoustic guitar melody that will make you clap or tap along.  “Busy” is indie pop that goes down easy while providing honest food for thought.

The chart continues to switch it up with a new number one song and four new entries.  And as seems to be the trend, more artists are doubling up again on the chart, including one newcomer!

The Top 10

  • He might not be very well known to the dance music world yet, but Australian-based UK producer Latchmere (aka Shaun Galvin) has a winner at the top with “Need Your Heart” (above) from his top notch EP Lovedrunk.  Even though Latchmere is primarily influenced by more current dance music makers, “Need Your Heart” is chock full of classic house sounds which will throw you back about 27 years – refreshing and nostalgic at the same time.  Another song from Lovedrunk also gains more ground this week.  “Monster” (below), featuring vocalist Dylan, climbs 22-18.  Do be sure to check out the entire EP for fine contemporary house music!  Latchmere is also the first act from Australia to reach #1 on this chart since The Temper Trap’s “Resurrection” scored just over 7 years ago in 2010 🙂

  • The wistful and infectious “No Love In Brooklyn” (above) by the combined efforts of France’s Nick Peters and western New York’s Frank Pierce featuring vocalist Scott Vega continues to climb up 5-4 for Tipsy Records’ ongoing partnership with Epic Records in Oslo, Norway.  Mr. Pierce gets to double up on the chart this week with the African and dancehall influences in “Do Me” (below, featuring vocalist Miles B) which premieres at #25.

  • Quickly finding its way to the Top 5 from #11 is “Flags” by L.A.’s Shoffy featuring vocalist Yuna from Shoffy’s fabulous debut album.  “Flags” is still currently a free download so you have no reason not to check it out 🙂  
  • Carlos Nóbrega’s “You (It’s All About You)” (above) rises to new heights 7-6, while a second song from The Art Of Making Love, “Free” (below) (featuring JVEL) is up a notch 21-20.
  • Also new to the Top 10 is the summer throwback “Driveway” by US/UK duo Culpriit, which climbs 14-10.

Movin’ On Up

  • “Wake Up To The Night” by Miami’s Alyx Ander featuring Caroline Pennell moves up 17-11, closing in on the Top 10, where Alyx’s “Memories Of You” peaked at #5.

  • Sam Smith gets to double his pleasure this week with a debut that I’ll talk about further down.  But first up is “No Good At Goodbyes” which rises 15-13.
  • “Hit Rewind” continues to sound like a hit to me as the song by Axel Mansoor and Louis Vivet moves up the chart 19-15.

  • The fastest riser on the chart belongs to Miguel, one of the finest soul-pop singers around, with “Sky Walker” (above), featuring Travis Scott, from his upcoming album War & Leisure.  The song soars 25-16, and like the even newer single with Prince overtones, “Told You So ” (below), are likely the best songs he’s released since the Grammy-winning Kaleidoscope Dream in 2012.

  • The riveting PLS&TY remix of SAINT WKND & MAX’s “Survive” races into the Top 20, moving 24-19.  MAX is also in the Top 10 at #9 featured on “No Hands”.

The Remaining Debuts

  • Dutch duo The Him return to the chart with their fourth entry, the scintillating “Everybody Hurts” (above), featuring Australian singer Ivy Adara, at #24, also available as a free download.  And they’ve already released another one since!  Listen to The Him’s new song “Always” below.
  • So about that double Sam Smith pleasure this week.  He pairs up with amazing new British vocalist YEBBA on the beautiful “No Peace” (below) from his album The Thrill Of It All, and the song arrives at #30.  But right above it is YEBBA’s own outstanding new independent single “Evergreen” (above) at #29.  I’m predicting YEBBA to be a powerful new pop force going into 2018, and “Evergreen”, along with “No Peace”, are just the start!!

#BILLCSTop30 #520 – October 16/17

Four debuts help keep the music flowing into the chart, as most of the songs are now an appealing pop/dance hybrid with other influences, though I always have a fond spot for a big banger 😀

The Top 10

  • Canadians Loud Luxury & Nikki’s Wives continue to hold at #1 with the irrepressible “Show Me”, whose comical video features none other than long time porn star Ron Jeremy.
  • “Perfect” is the gritty slice of deep house music by L.A.’s Mahalo featuring Cat Lewis that glides its way to #2 on the new chart.  Will it reach the top in two weeks??

  • “I Like Me Better” by Lauv (aka 23 year old Ari Leff) is finally making inroads at US radio after performing well on charts in Canada, the UK, and Sweden among others.  It climbs 5-3.
  • New to the Top 5, and a first timer for Tipsy Records, is the wistful singalong “No Love In Brooklyn” by producers Frenchman Nick Peters and western New York native Frank Pierce along with fellow Yank vocalist Scott Vega, which rises 7-5.

  • The Fastest Riser belongs to Australia-based UK producer Latchmere (the moniker of Shaun Galvin), whose Lovedrunk EP is perfect for club dance floors and of course to blast from your stereo.  The classic house rhythms of “Need Your Heart” take it 15-6 on the chart.

  • If you’re going to see Terror Jr. in Toronto this Friday (October 20) at The Drake Hotel, you will see Iowa’s Kid Froopy open the show.  The Kid’s EP is now out and its namesake first single “Drive Slow” moves up 8-7.
  • Rich production by Ricky Remedy and a stunner of a vocal from Orlando’s John.k take “Gold” up the chart 13-9.
  • “You (It’s All About You)” becomes the third Top Tenner here for Carlos Nóbrega, from his album The Art Of Making Love.  And if you want gorgeous goodies like buttons or postcards, as well as other collectibles, then head over to Carlos’ store right here.  “You” climbs 14-10.

Movin’ On Up

  • Every time I listen to “We Won’t Leave You” by Steve Void and Syence, it’s emotional power definitely gives me the feels.  Featuring an unbilled vocal by the fantastic Clara Mae (she also sang Steve’s “Chemistry” late last year), it rises 16-11.
  • Remixes are en route for Bobby Nourmand’s “MIND” featuring D.OC. and Goodmorning with another set of highly complimentary call-back vocals and rapping to help keep spinning EDM on its head.  “MIND” rises 17-13.
  • The US/UK duo called Culpriit (above) is well on its way with its debut single “Driveway”, which moves 24-17, and right behind is the free download with spirited vocals by blackbear and MAX, “No Hands” (below) by producers It’s Different and Forever MC, climbing 25-18.
  • Miami’s Alyx Ander’s “Wake Up For The Night” is for those with wee hour vibing featuring an Ellie Goulding-ish vocal by Caroline Pennell, and moves up 27-22.
  • Atlanta duo Halogen know good voices when the hear them, witness “Can’t Resist” featuring dazzling duo Adriana Gomez and Lub from the Porch Family (lub x tpf), and jumps 28-23.  It’s also a free download for you!

4 Debuts

  • From one of my favourite albums this year so far comes “Flags” by L.A.’s Shoffy (aka Alex Shofler) featuring Yuna.  This song is available as a free download, but check out all of Shoffy’s songs from his self-titled album.  It’s full of well-produced spins on dance music, not without some big beats, but focusing on the songs and his unique vocal style.  “Flags” bows at an impressive #20.
  • Following his amazing 2017 singles “Wasted My Love” and “Out Of My Head” is L.A.’s Axel Mansoor with producer buddy Louis Vivet and your official end-of-summer song “Hit Rewind”.  As with previous singles, this one is a free download for now, but you can go and support it by picking it up on your favourite digital platform.  “Hit Rewind” arrives at #26.  Axel has yet to leave the chart since the week of April 3 which is when “Wasted My Love” premiered.

  • Another single from The Art Of Making Love makes its entrance on the chart.  This time it’s “Free” by Carlos Nóbrega featuring Spanish singer JVEL, and it debuts at #27 with its intriguing comic-book themed lyric video.

  • The last debut is by the ever-irresistible Miguel, this time paired up with Travis Scott for “Sky Walker” at #28.  Time to chillax and party down with these guys with this cool song!

#BILLCSTop30 #519 – October 2/17

The start of Fall brings a chart that is crammed with great music particularly near the top. There’s a new #1 and four new songs to keep your head and feet particularly happy!
The Top 10  

  • Toronto’s Loud Luxury, the duo of Andrew Fedyk and Joseph De Pace, with the wonderful assist from fellow locals Nikki’s Wives, are back at the top of the chart, this time with the bass-laden “Show Me”. That’s two in a row this year following their big ‘n deep house cover of Craig David’s “Fill Me In” with another Torontonian, Ryan Shepherd. But “Show Me” has pretty fierce competition just bubbling below.
  • CVBZ’s “Be Like You”, in a Sean Turk remix (above), inches up to #2, while “Perfect” by L.A.’s Mahalo featuring singer Cat Lewis (below) is on its tail at #3. Who knows what will happen in two weeks! Sooo close!

  • At #5, why it’s Lauv with one of the best club-worthy singalongs of the year, “I Like Me Better”. Already in demand, you can catch the singer/songwriter also on DJ Snake’s new one “A Different Way”.
  • Soaring into the Top 10, up 14-7, is the Franco-American collaboration of “No Love In Brooklyn” by Nick Peters & Frank Pierce featuring Scott Vega. It has one of the catchiest choruses of the year, too!

  • The ever-recognizable voice of singer/songwriter Matthew Koma lands in the Top 10 for the 9th time since 2012 as either a solo or featured artist with the pensive ballad “Suitcase”, rising 12-9.

Movin’ On Up

  • “You (It’s All About You)” by Carlos Nóbrega’s debut album The Art Of Making Love climbs 18-14 to drive home the importance of commitment to one’s loved one. From Carlos’ other project Almageddon, also check out the latest video below for the majestic instrumental “Viva La Vida”.

  • The fastest riser on the chart is the highest debut from the last chart, a club hit in the making for “Need Your Heart”, the classic house opening song for Latchmere’s EP Lovedrunk. It rockets up the chart 23-15.
  • The warm and affectionate “We Won’t Leave You” by Steve Void and Syence continues to climb the chart with its anthemic feel-good message, rising 20-16.
  • The second collaboration by L.A.’s Bobby Nourmand with hip hop artists DOC and Goodmorning is “MIND”, and it jumps 19-17.
  • Possibly the most aggressive and wacked out song on the chart is the dubstep instrumental “Anesthetic” by San Diego’s Convulsic, continue to climb 22-18

  • You can catch a look at the 2017 edition of Sam Smith on Saturday Night Live on October 7, where he will almost certainly sing “Too Good At Goodbyes”, which rises 26-20.
  • “Would You Ever” is a pretty simple piece of songwriting that will leave you pondering if you should! And so it should, as Skrillex and partner-in-crime this time Poo Bear get remixed by MMXVAC’s own scrvp. (in a free download), taking it 27-21 on the chart.

Four Debuts

  • New duo Culpriit is a US/UK collaboration bringing us one of the most infectious songs of the year with “Driveway”, which bows at #24. If you’re trying to think of that song that the melody of the chorus may remind you of, it’s OutKast’s “Ms Jackson”.
  • There are suddenly so many great vocal collaborations surfacing in dance music, and this one deserves to be everywhere. Where else would you get verses by both blackbear and MAX? Brought to us by the team of producers It’s Different and Forever MC, “No Hands” arrives at #25, and is available above for free download… for now. It’s MAX’s fourth appearance on the chart but first as a featured vocalist – the others have all gone Top 10 including a #1 with “Wrong” (featuring Lil Uzi Vert).
  • Miami producer Alyx Ander lands his second appearance on the chart this year, this time with a top ten finisher from The Voice, the Ellie Goulding-sounding Caroline Pennell, with “Wake Up For The Night”. A perfect late night clubbing/driving song, it debuts at #27.
  • The fourth debut has another fantastic vocal teaming courtesy of Atlanta producers Halogen on “Can’t Resist”. The incredible voices are from Adriana Gomez and Florida’s Lub from the Porch Family (or lub x tpf), and “Can’t Resist” premieres at #28. Halogen remixed last year’s memorable “Born Ready” by The Disco Fries, which reached #9 on the chart. “Can’t Resist”, too, and for now, is a free download.

#BILLCSTop30 #518 – September 18/17

Lots of songs on the rise will change the top songs in the next month or so, and there are three debuts 🙂

The Top 10

  • Bright Light Bright Light’s “New York Pretty” leads the chart for a 4th appearance (8th week).  He has done this before THREE TIMES with “Love Part II” in 2010, “Waiting For The Feeling” in 2012, and “An Open Heart” in 2013/14.  “New York Pretty” is tied with The Chainsmokers and Coldplay’s “Something Just Like This” for most time at the top in 2017.  and BLx2’s Billboard Dance Club Play hit “Into The Night” (below) climbs 10-8 this week too!

  • Staying at #2 for a second appearance is Toronto’s Loud Luxury with Nikki’s Wives and the catchy bass sounds of “Show Me”.  Both groups are touring with Nikki’s Wives bowing in London, Ontario this week.
  • The fastest riser on the chart belongs to Mahalo and Cat Lewis, obtaining their third Top 5 song on the chart with “Perfect” vaulting 15-4.  It will battle with “Show Me” and CVBZ’s “Be Like You” (#3) for #1 in two weeks.  Mahalo and Cat Lewis hit the Top 5 earlier this year with “Be My Love” (#5) and “WTFYWF” (#3), and their other recent collaboration of “Heaven” (below) continues to climb 19-13!
  • Toronto’s Dan Talevski collects his third Top 5 song on this chart with the endless fun of “Birthday Suit” climbing 9-5.  “Guilty As Sin” got to #3 in 2015, and it was followed by “My Religion” (#5).

  • L.A.’s Lauv will be touring with none other than Ed Sheeran in Asia very soon, as “I Like Me Better” continues to make new friends and rises 12-9.

  • Those of you who enjoy the new mystery band Terror Jr. will have a chance to catch Iowa’s Kid Froopy as the opening act on their tour.  The Kid’s exceptionally produced “Drive Slow” moves up 14-10.

Movin’ On Up

  • Matthew Koma’s “Suitcase” breaks loose from lower chart numbers and soars 17-12 and is headed for the Top 10.
  • The Florida-based Tipsy label’s partnership with Epic Oslo is working with stellar new songs like “No Love In Brooklyn”, which has a great singalong chorus.  It’s by French producer Nick Peters paired with American Frank Pierce and with vocals by American Scott Vega, climbing 20-14.
  • “Gold” by Ricky Remedy and John.k rises a big 26-16, thanks to slick production and amazing vocals by John.k.  In fact John.k has already followed it up with a new song “OT”, which you can hear below.
  • What more can I say about the songs from Carlos Nobrega’s The Art Of Making Love?  A dedicated following has provided him with great chart numbers in Europe and has sent so many new visitors to this blog, over 80,000!  The charge started with “You (It’s All About You)” (above), the blog post of which is now my 3rd most viewed – but the blog post for the album is now most viewed at over 36,000 views!!  The song climbs 27-18, as a new instrumental from Carlos’ other project, Almageddon is released, “Almageddon: Madrid”.  This time it’s accompanied by a picturesque video of the famous city where he lives.  It debuted at #1 on the Spanish new age chart this past week.  Check it out below.

  • Steve Void and Syence move up with their touching joint collaboration to support anyone who’s down.  “We Won’t Leave You” rises 25-20.
  • The melodic but crazy dubstep of “Anesthetic” by San Diego’s Convulsic moves up 28-22.

Three Debuts

  • A new current favourite of mine that blends in contemporary electronic dance sounds with early 90’s classic house is “Need Your Heart” by Australia-based British producer Latchmere, from his debut indie EP Lovedrunk.  It bows at an impressive #23, ahead of some major major names and deserves your support 🙂

  • Sam Smith has such an amazing voice even if “Too Good For Goodbyes” as a song is weaker than some of his past hits, nonetheless it premieres at #26.  Sam has got to #1 here four times, all in 2014, with “Money On My Mind”, “Stay With Me”, “I’m Not The Only One”, and his collaboration with Disclosure on “Latch”.  The video arrives tomorrow!
  • Arriving on the chart for the first time is multi-Grammy winner Skrillex in collaboration with producer/songwriter Poo Bear (aka Jason Boyd), who co-wrote many songs on Justin Bieber’s Purpose album as well as classics like 112’s “Dance With Me” and Usher’s “Caught Up”.  The free download remix by scrvp. of “Would You Ever”, which gives the vocals and song an entirely different effect from the original, arrives at #27.

#BILLCSTop30 #517 – September 4/17

Some of my favourite songs of the year continue to appear on this latest chart, which makes ranking them – which is totally subjective here, there’s no formula! – very difficult.  As a result some may end up ranking higher on the year end chart than other songs which peak at the same position.  Enough chart geekery, it’s another busy chart with four debuts!

The Top 10

  • “New York Pretty” by Bright Light Bright Light currently has an incredibly tight lock on #1 – may have to wait for another chart to see who might be coming next!

  • With that in mind, Toronto’s Loud Luxury and Nikki’s Wives make a strong case for #1 as “Show Me” is the fastest riser two charts in a row.  Loud Luxury were already up top earlier this year with Ryan Shepherd on their amazing redux of Craig David’s “Fill Me In”, so is a second consecutive #1 in order? 🙂
  • I second all of the emotions in CVBZ’s lyrical “Be Like You”, which in its Sean Turk ‘bedroom bass’ remix climbs 6-3.  

  • Dan Talevski acquires his 4th Top 10 hit on this chart with the fun and contagious “Birthday Suit”, which rises 11-9.  Dan has just wrapped an EP which is coming soon!

  • He’s at the top of the chart but also at #10 – Bright Light Bright Light’s latest Top 40 Billboard Dance Club Play hit is “Into The Night”, and with its companion video to “New York Pretty” moves up 15-10.

Movin’ On Up

  • A song called “I Like Me Better” has all the potential for being cloying and annoying, but singer/songwriter Lauv has managed to make it cool and clever all at once, which is why is climbs 18-12.  Why American radio is not all over this song yet is totally beyond me!!  I’ve given up asking about things like this and radio.

  • Iowa’s Kid Froopy has landed the opening act slot on Terror Jr.’s upcoming tour and most dates are already sold out.  The Kid also has an EP in the works, but for now you can indulge in his delightfully quirky and immensely appealing single “Drive Slow”, rising 20-14.
  • One of the grittiest songs for the wee hours on the chart is the latest from L.A.’s Mahalo in his pairings with singer Cat Lewis on “Perfect” (above), which jumps 21-15.  Yes folks, all of the vocals in the song are by the elusive Mr. Lewis.  The duo are also up 22-19 with the soulful club-pleaser “Heaven” (below).
  • Matthew Koma’s beautiful “Suitcase” – an older song of his which has finally seen release – continues to move up, this time 19-17.  It’s one of a few solid songs that is stuck in a bit of a jam which may break loose in two weeks.

  • “No Love In Brooklyn” could be seen as a song associated with the end of summer relationships with some great, memorable lyrics.  It’s brought to you by producers Nick Peters, who hails from France, and American Frank Pierce, along with US singer Scott Vega.  It wastes no time charging 25-20.
  • Bobby Nourmand’s second match-up with vocalists DOC and Goodmorning, following the #1 “D E E P in NY”, is the infectious “MIND” which rises 28-23.

4 Debuts

  • I’m absolutely loving the collaboration of one of our favourite young Dutchmen, Steve Void, and American duo Syence, in the heartwarming “We Won’t Leave You”. Its universal message of love and support is very welcome, and the guys manage to give the song a choral effect along with the electronics which bring it home.  The highest debut, “Leave” bows at #25.
  • Debuting on the chart is a powerhouse duo from Florida, Grammy-nominated producer Ricky Remedy with compelling new vocalist John.k and “Gold”.  This one will dazzle you with its restrained, on-point production and amazingly versatile vocals by John.k.  “Gold” arrives at #26.
  • Carlos Nobrega’s new album The Art Of Making Love has brought over 50,000 – you read that right! – visitors to these blog pages – totally amazing!  All of the wait for new music for Carlos was teased out with 4 preceding singles, including “You (It’s All About You)”, which premieres at #27.  It’s already at over a million plays on Soundcloud.  Carlos has took over this chart before, back in 2012 with “Music Makes You Lose Control (MMYLC)”, which also appears in The Art Of Making Love.
  • San Diego dubstep producer Convulsic is back after a 3 year absence from this chart with the dirty and dynamic instrumental “Anesthetic”, which debuts at #28.  This one will leave you a little more than shaken ‘n stirred!  It follows Convulsic’s 2014 Top Tenners here “Love Space” (#5) and “The Day You Left” (#7).

#BILLCSTop30 #516 – August 21/17

The new chart marks one of my favourites this year, with so many songs on the rise that will do very well, plus three new entries to add to the influx of great tunes 🙂

The Top 10

  • It is now very resolute that “New York Pretty” (above) by Bright Light Bright Light isn’t going anywhere any time soon as it holds at #1 for a second appearance.  Its companion song and video, “Into The Night” (below) soars 26-15 as BLx2 himself commutes back and forth between the UK and the US performing live and DJ gigs.  He’s also been added to UK dates as the opening act for Erasure on their upcoming tour – what a perfect match!!

  • Axel Mansoor’s “Out Of My Head” (above) stays put at #2 for a 4th appearance (8 weeks), while former #1 “Wasted My Love” departs the chart.  But I will leave you with a lively remix of that song, below, by Dulsae which totally catches its vibe.
  • Also in the new remixes department, you can pick your fill of seven for “There For You” by Martin Garrix and Troye Sivan, including one by Toronto’s own Dzeko 🙂
  • “Bad Drug” by Cosmos & Creature rises 6-4 as new collaborations and singles from the talented duo of Brandyn Burnette and Molly Moore keep on comin’ this month!
  • The retro R&B groove of Anton’s “L.I.L.Y.” (like I love you) is irresistible, as the song climbs 8 to 5 for the Swedish pop singer.

  • Oregon’s CVBZ gets his first Top Tenner here with “Be Like You” in its Sean Turk remix, wasting no time by rising 12-6.  It’s Sean’s third ‘bedroom bass’ remix in the Top 10, following last year’s “Closer” by Brandyn Burnette (#7) and this year’s “Sleeping In” by Phil Good (tying its #6 peak).  CVBZ played the Billboard Hot 100 festival over the past weekend 🙂
  • Another newcomer to the Top 10 is England’s Sean Smith whose magnificent song “Magic” climbs 11-8 in its Andy Sikorski remix.

  • The fastest riser, and perhaps #1 contender, rounds out the Top 10.  It’s “Show Me” by Toronto’s Loud Luxury (recently gigging in Las Vegas with Martin Garrix) and Nikki’s Wives, flying up the chart 22-10.  Loud Luxury recently got to #1 with their redux of Craig David’s “Fill Me In” with Ryan Shepherd.

Movin’ On Up

  • Can’t get enough of Dan Talevski’s fun and lighthearted “Birthday Suit” right now as it rises 14-11.

  • Toronto quartet Blajk gave one of my favourite club shows of 2017 almost two weeks ago in their home town at The Drake Hotel with a stunning performance that recalled The Killers when they first began.  All eyes were on singer Jordan Radics as he sang songs like “Gunshot”, which jumps 20-14 (and ironically leaps over “The Man” by The Killers at #17!).
  • I’m gonna call it now – feel good song of the year.  It’s “I Like Me Better” by L.A. singer/songwriter Lauv, also now a national chart hit in Sweden.  So USA, I think you are missing out!  “I Like Me Better” moves up 27-18.

  • Keep your ears peeled for more from Iowa’s Kid Froopy – concert dates are in the works!  “Drive Slow” is one of those great songs for a lazy day with a funky vibe to keep those feet tapping.   It climbs up 30-20.

Three New Entries

  • At #21 is the FOURTH chart entry so far this year for L.A.’s Maholo and go-to-vocalist Cat Lewis, with “Perfect” (above).  This one is to be played loud in the wee hours as Cat’s vocals are shifted and played with and then in perfect harmony with each other.  “Perfect” sneaks in right above their prior release, the soulful “Heaven”, which moves up 25-22.  Their other two chart entries this year were “Be My Love” (#5) and “WTFYWF” (#3).
  • First timers to the chart are French producer Nick Peters along with American producer Frank Pierce and featuring vocalist Scott Vega for the telling and bittersweet “No Love In Brooklyn” at #25.  This one has an unmistakable melody and a great singalong chorus which you need to check out.
  • Just as his song “D U S T” (which peaked at #5) is about to finish its run, along comes another new one from Bobby Nourmand.  Reprising his collaboration with soul and hip hop vocalists DOC and Goodmorning from his #1 “D E E P in NY”, “MIND” and its catchy chorus bow at #28.

NICK PETERS & FRANK PIERCE featuring SCOTT VEGA, “No Love In Brooklyn”

Not every summery dance single can be a big banger, so here we have a thoughtful, midtempo Franco-American dance/pop offering called “No Love In Brooklyn” by French producer Nick Peters and US producer Frank Pierce featuring American duo Scott Vega.  This one goes down really smooth, with a soft, clean vocal that lifts the song up despite its subject matter.  “No Love” will work great in a mid-evening set, and continues the promising sounds that both young producers (Nick is a teenager) have been making separately, such that Epic Oslo has tapped the release in conjunction with Tipsy Tortoise.  Be sure to give “No Love In Brooklyn” a few spins at the link above.
