UK trio @Patawawa continue to impress with lo-fi funky, emotional disco of “Fight Me”

PATAWAWA, “Fight Me”

Yes, you read that headline correctly.  Dance music sometimes disguises the toughest of emotions, so that we can let them all out and leave our blood on the dance floor, as Michael Jackson once sang.  UK trio Patawawa subscribe to these sentiments in their latest song “Fight Me”, following up the 70’s funk-laced “Lie” and their EP Bedroom.  Retaining the lo-fi production that highlights the bass work in a pretty raw form, “Fight Me” is also a showcase for Beth’s captivating vocal, as well as out-and-out disco inspiration that brings the zing back into those strings that recall so many records particularly out of the Salsoul and Philadelphia International labels of the 70’s.  Patawawa’s hearts and minds are all in the right places and they keep you happily stuck dancing on the groove line with “Fight Me”.

Here’s to even more disco-funk from England’s @Patawawa with “Lie”

PATAWAWA, “Lie”

Beth, Rory and Sam comprise UK trio Patawawa, who impressed earlier this year with the grand retro-disco vibes of “Patagonia” from their EP Bedroom.  They’ve followed up the EP with an appearance in Cookie Records’ Crispy Groove Compilation EP with “Lie”.  This song draws perhaps more on inspiration from Parliament-Funkadelic and Rick James than CHIC this time, with its deep bass synths creating a deliciously contagious funky rhythm.  The trio has everything going for it to stand out in the busy dance music scene, but I think would benefit of better-rounded production to make their music pop even more.  But, no lie, “Lie” is a heckuva lot of fun and should attract more fans to Patawawa’s diverse sounds.  Add “Lie” to your “It Is Time To Get Funky” playlist using the Spotify link below.

Disco and funk vibes are alive and well in “Patagonia” by UK trio @Patawawa

PATAWAWA, “Patagonia”

Although the UK has been noted for many wonderful R&B/soul and dance artists since the 1970’s, you’d hardly think that a broad, funky slice of disco like “Patagonia” would come from an electronic UK trio from Matlock in Derbyshire like Patawawa.  It’s from their upcoming EP called Bedroom, and “Patagonia” is just so refreshing with a lot going for it in a cluttered dance music market.  Members Sam and Rory start off the song with soul-influenced vocals complementing a snappy funk rhythm that reminds me of Penguin Prison or Dan Black from earlier in the decade, along with a catchy chorus.  Then BLAMMO in comes the secret weapon of Beth Garrett’s vocal where one would not expect it, at around the 1:20 mark.  I like that “Patagonia” takes risks like that while still being blissfully entertaining because you’re going to want to hear Beth’s voice again… and you shall 🙂  Patawawa will easily draw you in to all of the intrigue of “Patagonia” so make sure you listen above and watch for the EP to drop on January 26.
