“Ride” is NYC singer @Reigenmusic’s alt.pop ode to escapism, friendship and first attraction

REIGEN, “Ride”

Ever experimenting and challenging boundaries within the pop music realm, NYC indie alt.pop/dance singer Reigen follows up this year’s “Rollin'”, “Smoke Drink Party”, and his winning cover of The Cranberries’ “Dreams”, with “Ride”.  It seems simple in the video – two teen guys hanging out on a quiet night after midnight when they’re out for bike rides on deserted streets for everyday escapist fun. But of course as life constantly throws complicated curves to us, friendship for one is obviously turning to more of an attraction, leading the other to ponder at the end, and you can sense the exhilaration.  Reigen’s singing is bold and impressive, working with a complex and busy but uplifting arrangement that works well with the lyrics.  While the song sings about a ‘ride or die’ relationship that for some of us ends up being forevermore with the best of friends, for others it takes another path.  Watch the video at the link above.

Another sparkling summer song is “Ride” by @Naikamusic in a @Konimusic remix

NAÏKA, “Ride” (Koni remix)

It’s been out for a little while now, but not to be missed is Miami singer Naïka’s “Ride”, perfect for those sunny day drives or dance parties on the beaches, aided immensely by a sparkling, synth-soaked remix from Koni of the German duo Saxity.  I enjoy Naïka’s solid, direct vocal, which adds to the fun appeal of the song and its “ra-pa-pa-pa-pa-pum” hook.  There’s nothing better to do here but get into your car and crank up “Ride” as the song instructs you to do and let the music take you away.  Add the Koni remix of “Ride” to your Summer Getaway playlist using the Spotify link above.

L.A.’s @Zhaomusic arrives with the ethereal “Lifetime”

ZHAO, “Lifetime”

Producer/singer/songwriter Zhao first came to my attention late last year as the vocalist on an enigmatic, enduring favourite of mine by producer Eric Sharp called “The Thirst” (below).  Now L.A.-based, born in Tennessee but raised in Atlanta, Zhao (first name Kenny) kicks off his EP Ride with “Lifetime”.  It’s a thoughtful dose of melodic electronica that will slip under your skin and transport you to somewhere peaceful and personal for a while.  It’s definitely the flipside of the more aggressive “The Thirst”, and may hold as many influences from the keyboard work of M83 and the sparseness of Rhye as it does from 80’s pop and R&B.  It’s complex music that sounds simple and most pleasing to the ears, and you can watch Zhao himself at work in the fine video for “Lifetime” up top.
