#BILLCSTop30 #523 – November 27/17

There’s lots of movement on the new chart, plus five debuts, three of which are Canadian, which constitutes a mini-takeover ūüėõ¬† The top of the chart pretty much stays put as other newer songs get closer.

The Top 10

  • The top of the chart is still grooving to old school Chicago-styled house as mixed with contemporary electronic pop.¬† It’s once again “Need Your Heart”, brought to you by Australia-based UK producer Latchmere from his EP Lovedrunk.¬† Zooming in on the Top 10 is another song from the EP “Monster”, featuring Aussie female vocalist Dylan, zipping up the chart 18-11.
  • Shoffy’s thoughtful-with-a-beat “Flags” (featuring) looks like it will give “Need Your Heart” the most competition at #1, as the single from his debut self-titled album climbs 5-3.
  • The unbridled energy and attitude of “No Hands” sends it into the Top 5 for the collaboration of producers it’s different and Forever MC, and lethal vocal combo of blackbear and MAX.¬† It’s too bad the song has never seen official release but is still available as a free download.
  • Making its presence known in the Top 10 for the first time is “Wake Up To The Night” by Miami’s Alyx Ander featuring The Voice top ten contestant and songwriter Caroline Pennell, rising 11-6.
  • US/UK duo Culpriit also move up within the Top 10 with “Driveway” climbing 10-7.
  • The new cool word is “splish”.¬† Miguel and Travis Scott claim #8 with “Sky Walker” from the upcoming War & Leisure album.¬† Miguel also nabs one of the five debuts further down…
  • The Thrill Of It All is a beautiful follow up to In The Lonely Hour, a completely different kind of album where the best songs are the ones you won’t hear on the radio, aside of course from “Too Good At Goodbyes”, which moves up 13-9.¬† You’ll find Sam’s duet with star-on-the-rise YEBBA at #23 with “No Peace”.

Movin’ On Up

  • We have more MAX in his pairing with SAINT WKND on “Survive” rising 19-13 in a fierce PLS&TY remix that totally gets the vibe of the song.
  • Dutch duo The Him look to get to the Top 10 quickly with “Everybody Hurts”, a free download for you featuring Australian singer Ivy Adara, which soars 24-15.
  • A second entry for producer/songwriter Frank Pierce jumps 25-17, “Do Me” featuring vocalist Miles B.¬† You won’t be able to sit still with the buoyant rhythm of this one. Frank still sits pretty at #4 with pals Nick Peters and Scott Vega with “No Love In Brooklyn”.
  • The fastest riser on the chart is from the aforementioned British singer YEBBA (aka Abbey Smith) with her debut single “Evergreen” rocketing up the chart 29-18.¬† Patiently waiting for more news about YEBBA!
  • “Murder” is an infectious slice of deep house from Dutch producer/DJ Lady Bee featuring fellow producer Tropkillaz and standout vocalist Oktavian.¬† It climbs 23-20.

Five Debuts

  • The high point of Ti√ęsto’s Club Life Vol. 5 – China album comes early on with Toronto’s own Dzeko scoring with potent cover of Seal’s 90’s hit “Crazy” in a Ti√ęsto Big Room mix, which charges on to the chart at #21.¬†¬†Ti√ęsto has appeared numerous times on this chart, the last time with his remix of “Let You Go” by The Chainsmokers and Great Good Fine OK in 2015.¬† Dzeko has only had one prior appearance, but it was a doozy – a #1 in 2016 with buddy Luis Torres as well as Sweden’s Hellberg with “Care For Me”, my #2 song of last year.
  • It’s Miguel again at #27 with “Pineapple Skies”, which revels in the music of Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder so much that it’s just plain joyful!¬†¬†
  • Song #2 on the chart for Toronto’s Loud Luxury premieres at #28 with new vocalist Brando in the irresistible “Body” (this time for Armada).¬† The duo has had two #1’s this year with “Fill Me In” (with Ryan Shepherd) and “Show Me” (with Nikki’s Wives) – will “Body” be next?
  • It immediately got under my skin when I first heard it two weeks ago, so Swiss/South African producer/DJ Nora En Pure’s “Tears In Your Eyes” arrives on the chart at #29.
  • A third Torontonian bows on the chart this week, and it is indeed the previously mentioned Ryan Shepherd, whose amazing new slice of deep house “Right Now” (featuring Dirty Hary) bows at #30.

Hard-driving “Crazy” by @Dzekomusic highlights @Tiesto’s Clublife Vol. 5 – China

DZEKO, “Crazy” (Ti√ęsto’s Big Room mix)

I don’t usually zero in on a cover version among an album of originals as its highlight, but if you’re a DJ looking for that one song to crank up a set, then “Crazy” by Toronto’s Dzeko will do the trick.¬† It’s a more-than-worthy cover of Seal’s 1991 smash, more recently covered successfully as well by Alanis Morissette, and one of my favourite songs of the 90’s, which makes it even harder to convince.¬† But it gets Ti√ęsto’s Big Room mix treatment and ends up being the focal point of his new gem of a party album Clublife Volume 5 – China, despite top notch new songs by Stargate & Aloe Blacc, Diplo and John Christian, VASSY, KSHMR & Talay Riley and SWACQ.¬† Give “Crazy” a whirl at the Spotify link above, and don’t hesitate to play Clublife Volume 5 to get a room full of dance music lovers groovin’.

Classic dance update: @Tiesto’s “Just Be” gets a @Dzekomusic redux

TI√čSTO, “Just Be” (Dzeko remix)

It may be a touch daring to update songs¬†that are revered by a lot of dance music fans, but that’s sometimes what makes a remix stand on its own. ¬†Such is the case with 2004’s “Just Be” by Ti√ęsto from the classic album of the same name, also known for including “Love Comes Again” (with BT) and “Adagio For Strings”. ¬†Toronto’s Julian Dzeko is definitely in the good books with Ti√ęsto, so he took some license with the remix. ¬†I like the update overall with its future bass drops and breaks, so it can slide into a set easily and catch folks off guard, though I miss many of the experimental elements of the original. ¬†Kirsty Hawkshaw’s dreamy vocal is intact though of course much is edited out for such a short remix. ¬†All-in-all, with Dzeko & Torres and their distinctive sound on hiatus, a representation of good things to come from Dzeko¬†solo.¬†

Sweet ‘n soulful @GreatGoodFineOK’s top notch EP and vocals on @TheChainsmokers “Let You Go” (@Tiesto remix)

THE CHAINSMOKERS featuring GREAT GOOD FINE OK ¬†“Let You Go” (Ti√ęsto remix)

I had the good fortune of seeing Brooklyn, New York band Great Good Fine OK when they swung into town opening up for Penguin Prison. ¬†Their recently released EP of originals 2M2H showcased an 80’s flavoured electronic¬†pop sound influenced heavily by¬†R&B/soul – think Michael Jackson, Culture Club, Level 42, Style Council – with plenty of keyboard wizardry. ¬†Singer Jon Sandler has a multi-octave voice that can go up against¬†the best singers! ¬†He hits those sweet high notes like Mika but has a beautiful, full¬†low register¬†as well. ¬†“Something To Believe In”, featuring St. Lucia, is your go-to song on the EP, though all of the songs form a great introduction to GGFO, including “Carried Away”. ¬†Jon Sandler and Luke Moellman are also DJ’s so not only do they sing and play their music so well with a full band, but they know how to work a versatile mix. ¬†Stream the entire EP above.

So while I was checking out their music on Soundcloud, I came across their featured appearance on a song by fellow New Yorkers The Chainsmokers! ¬†“Let You Go” once again features Jon’s high register in full force, and it’s highly complimented by¬†Ti√ęsto’s progressive house remix which truly kicks up a storm for the dancefloor. ¬†It’s irresistible – you won’t be able to help yourself from moving. ¬†A bonus – it’s a free download! ¬†Play it along your favourite house tracks and don’t say you weren’t warned! ¬†Listen to “Let You Go” and download it below.

Get Inspired with “Colors” by @Hardwell & @Tiesto featuring @AndreasMoemusic

There’s so much very busy EDM out there, and some of it, especially by major artists who are phoning it in, is becoming easy to dislike and dismiss. ¬†Not so with the songs I’ve heard from ¬†Dutch DJ/producer Hardwell (aka 26 year old Robbert van de Corput)¬†on his latest album United We Are. ¬†There are several collaborations, including one with Jason Derulo that will make you turn your head all the way around, but the most striking is “Colors”, a partnership with the reknown Ti√ęsto and Sweden’s Andreas Moe, who has the uncanny ability to sing just about anything. ¬†You already¬†know Andreas from my blog posts about his own recordings and vocals on both Avicii’s “Fade Into Darkness” and John De Sohn’s “Long Time”. ¬†The positive message, the lush production, those gorgeous arpeggios, plus Andreas’ truly engaged vocal make “Colors”¬†one of the best EDM records around going into Spring. ¬†The massive attack on club dance floors will ensue. ¬†United We Are also includes last year’s UK Top 20 hit “Dare You” featuring Matthew Koma. ¬†Get it on iTunes.
