BOBBY NOURMAND, “Smokin’ Joe”
It’s already been about 4 weeks, and L.A.-based producer/DJ Bobby Nourmand is almost at 300,000 plays on Soundcloud with his debut original release on The Magician’s Potion imprint called “Smokin’ Joe”. You may recall I wrote about Bobby’s other-worldly-sounding free download cover of The Beatles’ “Because” last summer. That song has 350,000 plays, so dance music lovers obviously agree that the music of Bobby Nourmand is not a one time only deal. “Smokin’ Joe” uses a similarly wonky percussion-and-keyboards driven rhythm as “Because” in this toe-tapper that draws as much from 1960’s early FM rock influences as it does early 1980’s post-punk era trappings (think David Bowie meets Peter Murphy/Bauhaus for the vocals). “Smokin’ Joe” is alternative dance at its finest as it stands far out from the crowd.
