In alphabetical order, below is a list of what are likely my favourite Disco songs of the classic Disco era 1974-1981.
Some may argue – including me, that the Disco era might have started as early as 1968 with “Dance To The Music” by Sly & The Family Stone, or in 1971 with “Theme From ‘Shaft’” by Isaac Hayes, or in 1973 with “Love’s Theme” by the Love Unlimited Orchestra. For clearly the writing was on the wall many years before the Miami Disco sound of “Rock Your Baby” by George McCrae ushered Disco into the Pop charts in mid-1974.
I’ve managed to fit 101 songs into the list (thanks to a classic Donna Summer mix). Some may argue that a few of them aren’t really Disco songs because they didn’t make the national Disco chart (there’s even one release that was a Canadian club hit). I own a copy of each song but one in some shape or form. I stopped the list with 1981 since 1982 ushered in one of the most important records that transformed Pop, R&B, and Disco/Dance – Michael Jackson’s Thriller.
