I’m sure the reason for Alexander Stewart getting a third appearance at #1 with “The Boy I Almost Was” had to do with his Toronto concert performance on March 13, which was simply exceptional! There’s a fair bit of movement as we will likely have a new #1 in two weeks, and there are four debuts.
Check out information about my ONLINE RADIO SHOWS after the chart commentary below as they are directly tied in with this blog. As most of you know, I host 4 online radio shows – The Big 20, the all-Canadian The MAPL Tapes, and two iterations of Your Weekend New Music Mix – and produce 2 online radio segments – my new music and retro picks of the week – that are all pre-recorded. The Big 20, The MAPL Tapes, and the picks of the week are happily being syndicated and you can find the current schedule for all at the bottom of the home page of this blog.

That means “The Boy I Almost Was” (above) matches the three chart #1 run of “Friends Don’t” at the end of last year. And Alexander’s new single “Every Lifetime” (below) leaps 29-21 as well. It’s a song that would do well at Top 40 and AC radio, though does not seem to be marketed to radio for some reason.
Sombr likely has another #1 in his pocket in two weeks as “Homewrecker” glides 6-2.
Also looking good is “Better Off” by Will Swinton, which climbs 10-5 and is his third Top 5 entry. Will is performing at Lolloapalooza in Chicago this summer.
Two infectious songs in very different ways, Pacifica’s “Indie Boyz” (8-6, above) and “Bad” by N i G H T S (9-7, below), both secure new peak positions this week.
New to the Top 10 are the Caribbean-African fusion of “Tha Rizzla” by Italy’s Filippide (11-8, above), and worldwide breakout “Blink” by Corbyn Besson and Taiwanese vocalist TZUYU (14-10, below). The latter is Corbyn’s second Top 10 appearance following 2024’s “Panic” with NOTD (#6). He also got to #8 in 2021 as a member of Why Don’t We with “Fallin’ (Adrenaline)”, and then #5 in 2022 when the group teamed up with Jonas Blue on “Don’t Wake Me Up”.
“All The Things She Said” as recorded in dark, bass synth-drenched cover by UK producer Harrison, is so easy to get stuck in your head and it leaps 19-12.
Illenium’s heavy and cathartic “War” (with Lø Spirit) from his latest album Odyssey moves up 18-14.
The Fastest Riser on the chart is “To Love Somebody” (above) by UK singer and violinist Holly Humberstone, which soars 27-18. You can also check out her new single, “Cruel World”, the title track from her upcoming album, below.
Also making a nice jump is the pop bop “Sweet Love” (above) by Stephen Sanchez, which rises 26-20. Stephen also has a follow-up single out, “Love Love Love” (below), which is also the title of his upcoming album.
The Highest Debut belongs to singer and actor Tyler Hilton with “Texas” at #25. It becomes Tyler’s 10th chart entry but his first since 2012. He’s also due for a new solo album, which would be his first since 2019. He’s been recording and touring a lot with his “One Tree Hill” co-star Kate Voegele over the past few years.
Next at #26 is Toronto area indie rock band The James Clark Institute with “Reluctantly in Love”. The song bridges the post new wave sounds of Joe Jackson and Elvis Costello with fantastic wordsmithing from songwriter James. It’s produced by Moe Berg (The Pursuit of Happiness, Trans-Canada Highwaymen), who also oprovides the guitar solo at the start of the song.
At #27 is Midnight Til Morning with “Heart on Fire” from their album Afterglow. These four talented Australian and American guys, who were put together into the band through Netflix’s TV show “Building the Band”, have great chemistry, and the song is a refreshingly positive anthemic rocker.
The last new entry at #28 is “Perfect’s Overrated”, an uplifting pop/dance track by Czechia’s Nicola Nicoletti from his debut album Gilded, which is chock full of great songs.
