BILLCS New Music Report – September 5/24 with new songs by @BingoPlayers x @TheDiscoFries x @FatmanScoop, @NITTImusic x Outrage x @MicahtheZealot, Esther Anaya & @DamonSharpe, @Prizmofficial & Rouse, @dearMothica, @DylanandtheMoon, Fie Eike, and @Caprismusic

Don’t mind me while I again bemoan the difficulty I continue to face each week with choosing the songs that I write about in each edition of the Report. This is leading me to consider a change to the Report for the New Year, which might lead to more of a tip sheet format of songs that I recommend for you to check out, while continuing with the other features that support my work in online radio. If you have any comments about this that you would like to share, please let me know. I’m aware of how much readers are enjoying the current format but I do believe I can provide more recommendations of new songs with more succinct detail.

My Retro Pick of the Week now joins the features of the blog which follow the reviews of the new tunes.

In the Report, you can also check out my pick of the week, along with a record of the week from the host of online radio’s “Top 40 Timeline”, “Big Daddy” Russ Horton, plus “Modern Hype” online radio host DJ Hunter’s “Bop of the Week”.  “The Musicman” James Rogers’ Classic Five draws from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s this week. And you’ll find out what songs were in the Top 5 of the BILLCS Top 30 5-10-15-20-25 years ago!

The BILLCS New Music Report is always a work-in-progress and I welcome your suggestions so feel free to contact me at through my social media links right here.

Bingo Players, Disco Fries, Fatman Scoop, "Our House"

BINGO PLAYERS, DISCO FRIES, FATMAN SCOOP, “Our House”

Sadly, rapper Fatman Scoop left us this past week after taking ill on stage at a concert in Connecticut at the young age of 53. So it’s bittersweet to be writing up his recent collaboration with Dutch producer Bingo Players (aka Maarten Hoogstraten) and blog regulars Disco Fries called “Our House”. But it’s a fitting send off, as their original “Our House” presents exactly the kind of big, fun, inclusive party song that gave Fatman Scoop his biggest success in 2003 in the UK with the memorable #1 “Be Thankful”, and led to huge collabs with remixes for the likes of Mariah Carey, Missy Elliot and Janet Jackson among many. The producers have nailed the anthemic quality that could make “Our House” a festival and outdoor dance party favourite. Suspend any serious thinking, let loose and have a great time to “Our House”.

NITTI, Outrage, Micah Martin, "Stay Away"

NITTI, OUTRAGE, MICAH MARTIN, “Stay Away”

It’s been a while since I wrote about releases by NITTI, certainly before his artist name change and shift into more hardcore dance styles. The multi-platinum and Grammy Award winning producer teams up with Colorado’s Outrage for “Stay Away”, which essentially is a cathartic song from the fall out of a relationship that didn’t work out. Iowa vocalist Micah Martin, who I’ve also written about before, completes the collaboration with his fierce vocal that reminds me of contemporaries like Grabbitz and Lø Spirit. And while the arrangement tends to pummel away at you for the first part of the song, it pulls back and lets all of the pent up emotion settle in. That’s not something that a lot of producers do, so kudos to NITTI and Outrage for realizing how well it works in “Stay Away”. My recommendation is for those who like their EDM fast and hard, though open-minded fans of the genre will enjoy it as much as I do.

Esther Anaya, Damon Sharpe, "Lost In Dubai"

ESTHER ANAYA, DAMON SHARPE, “Lost In Dubai”

“Lost In Dubai” is a dreamy, gentle slice of tech house/pop with both Latin and Arabic flavours. It’s brought to you by Colombian multi-talent Esther Anaya who is in great hands in this collaboration with L.A.-based producer Damon Sharpe for his new Brainjack label. Esther is not only a singer but an exceptional violinist, as well as a DJ and producer (and I’ve seen her perform in Las Vegas), which all makes it all the easier for a veteran like Damon to work together to shape this delightful release. Esther’s alluring vocal draws you in and her violin work is beautifully showcased. The song is essentially about being mesmerized by an enchanting woman when you get “lost in Dubai” in her eyes. “Lost In Dubai” is one of those ideal songs that could be used in the early part of an evening by DJ’s to entice club goers to the dance floor and stay there for awhile.

The Prizm, Rouse, "Come Through"

THE PRIZM, ROUSE, “Come Through”

“Come Through” caught me by surprise as a deft slice of soulful rhythmic hip hop, brought to you by L.A. producer The Prizm and vocalist Rouse. Both have appeared in this blog before. The Prizm has expanded his versatility over the past few years moving from strictly electronic dance productions to tackle more progressive electronic songs as well as hip hop/R&B. His relatable pop/dance song “I Don’t Wanna Go Home” got to #3 on the BILLCS Top 30 in 2020. Rouse’s appearance on the chart goes back a bit further, to the dark and beautiful “Her and Him” in collaboration with producer Mi Disguise, and it too got to #3 on the chart in 2016. It’s not often that a vocalist can move seamlessly between singing and rapping, but Rouse has a great tone and terrific skills with his verses. “Come Through” is well-crafted and well-suited for rhythmic radio and dance clubs.

Mothica, "Doomed"

MOTHICA, “Doomed”

Oklahoma-born Mothica (aka McKenzie Ellis) began making music as a teenager, often with edgy, deeply personal songs set to an electronic backdrop. I’ve written about her music before and in fact got to see her perform back in 2017, ironically opening for a band that’s no longer together. So it’s great to hear the growth in her songwriting these years later in songs from her impressive new album Kissing Death, particularly the taut and compelling “Doomed”. It’s an autobiographical song referencing how leading what looks like a perfect suburban childhood masked traumatic, life-changing events that made her feel “doomed” despite her many talents. Fans of Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish will appreciate Mothica’s vulnerable vocal, and the layered production could draw in rock fans of singers like Amy Lee and Remi Wolf. But it’s the poignancy of “Doomed” that is most memorable and gets under your skin, and fans of Mothica who have been behind her since “Vices” had a huge viral moment a few years back, or even before that, are sure to enjoy.

Dylan & The Moon, "Bones"

DYLAN & THE MOON, “Bones”

“Bones” by Cornwall, England talent Dylan & The Moon, is a bright and unique song about enjoying everything about a relationship, from just hanging out and appreciating each other’s company to those passionate times that come naturally. Dylan Holloway is an award-winning transman singer/songwriter who previously had some success in the UK in his previous identity. He’s got a likeable, earthy voice and with “Bones”, has a flair for loading multiple hooks into one song. The lyrics are genuine and unfiltered, and the song moves along briskly through multiple well-structured musical changes that come full circle. “Bones” is impressive in its authenticity and I think Dylan & The Moon has the potential to go a long way with songs like this one.

Fie Eike, "Fluid"

FIE EIKE, “Fluid”

“Fluid” is an enticing alt.pop track by Copenhagen singer/songwriter Fie Eike, whose imaginative releases “Sad” and “The Nile” I wrote about earlier in the year. Fie Eike has an individualized style that combines classical melodies with her crisp, trained vocal, and in “Fluid” the inspiration is from Hans Christian Andersen’s story “The Little Mermaid”. So you get a mellifluous, almost hollow sound that reminds you of being underwater that unfolds under a story that warns about being too “fluid” with our relationships, which allow our own needs to be trumped by our desires to fit in with society. “Fluid” encourages, and models, individuality. Fie Eike may appear to be way out in left field with her songs but “Fluid” will attract organically those who like to be enticed and challenged by their song choices.

The Capris, "Running From The World"

THE CAPRIS, “Running From The World”

Late last year I introduced you to Irish quartet The Capris and their rockin’ release “Melancholy Blues”. “Running From The World” is a smart continuation of the honed sound of that track, and this new release has a lot of 80’s inspiration that recalls hits from the time by Bruce Springsteen and John Mellencamp. It includes a tight, energetic performance and a sometimes gritty vocal by singer Odhran, whose work here reminds me of the late great Joe Cocker and how he got so caught up and lost in performing his songs.  And there’s not much more you can want in a high quality indie rock release.

BILLCS New Music Report – August 28/24 with new songs by @Livetheband & @DeanDeleo, @VWOfficial, @Mercer_music, @BillieEilish in a @JerinJamesmusic remix, @Moonwoodmusic, @TylerGarrettusa, @SeanSmithsolo and Lily Lane

I continue to try to mix it up with the songs that stand out and I choose to write about every week in this Report. In some weeks it’s difficult to whittle it down to eight songs given the amount of new songs I listen to in a week.

Please note that since I will be travelling over the upcoming Labour Day weekend here in Canada, the next report will appear on Thursday, September 5.

In the Report, you can also check out my pick of the week, along with a record of the week from the host of online radio’s “Top 40 Timeline”, “Big Daddy” Russ Horton, plus “Modern Hype” online radio host DJ Hunter’s “Bop of the Week”.  “The Musicman” James Rogers’ Classic Five conjures up selections of rock classics from the 70’s and 80’s. And in case you missed them on Monday, you’ll find out what songs are #1 and the Fastest Riser on the BILLCS Top 30.

The BILLCS New Music Report is always a work-in-progress and I welcome your suggestions so feel free to contact me at through my social media links right here.

Live, Dean Deleo, "Lady Bhang (You Got Me Rollin')"

LIVE, DEAN DELEO, “Lady Bhang (She Got Me Rollin’)”

Even when you’re not looking, sometimes the new releases will take you by surprise. I had no idea singer/songwriter Ed Kowalczyk was back using the Live moniker (since there are no other original members left but him after acrimonious fallouts occurred), but if “Lady Bhang (She Got Me Rollin’)” is any indication, then it will be worth keeping an ear out for what’s next. “Lady Bhang” takes me back to the mid-90’s when I saw the group perform in concert three times (including for their debut album) and bought all of their CD’s from that era. Songs like “Selling The Drama”, “All Over You”, “Lakini’s Juice” and “Operation Spirit” will be forever in my music rotation. The addition of Stone Temple Pilots’ guitarist Dean Deleo is a real coup too. The song itself is the best that I’ve heard from Live since the 90’s. With its fierce musicianship, urgent vocal and mysterious lyrics, “Lady Bhang” is a winner.

Vanessa Williams, "Come Dance With Me" (John "J-C" Carr & Bill Coleman BEACH808 Jukebox Mix)

VANESSA WILLIAMS, “Come Dance With Me” (John “J-C” Carr & Bill Coleman 808BEACH Jukebox remix)

With her recent “Legs (Keep Dancing)” (which recently reached #7 on the BILLCS Top 30) having launched a comeback for the singer and actress whose popularity was at its peak in the 1990’s, Vanessa Williams has followed it up with her fifth album and first since 2009, Survivor. The album is a mix of new songs and some standards, with contributions by the likes of Wynton Marsalis, André Cymone, and Mic Murphy (of The System) and a stellar cast of musicians and vocalists. And yes, “Come Dance With Me” is the Frank Sinatra standard, but on the album you get it two ways, with a traditional interpretation, and John “J-C” Carr and Bill Coleman’s playful dance mix, which immediately made me think of the sophistication of The Manhattan Transfer and Dr. Buzzard’s Original “Savannah” Band. Needless to say, Vanessa is right in her element with a classy vocal. Club DJ’s should not sleep on this mix of “Come Dance With Me” – someone in the audience always knows standards, and will make the most of it on the dance floor.

Mercer, "Le Sud"

MERCER, “Le Sud”

French dance producer Mercer has been prolific as of late, but he’s not sacrificing quality for quantity. “Le Sud” is an enchanting disco-flavoured ode to the south of France, and like me, if you’ve ever been there, the melody will transport you back to the warm sea breeze, the sunshine, the food, and the nightlife. Because of Celine Dion’s captivating performance of “L’hymne d’amour” at the Summer Olympics in Paris, the uncredited Edith Piaf-like vocal will catch people’s attention, and “Le Sud” is a perfect vehicle for club DJ’s to draw out patrons to the dance floor.

Billie Eilish, "Chihiro" (Jerin James Remix)

BILLIE EILISH, “Chihiro” (Jerin James remix) (free download)

I’ve written about the music of southern California-based electronic dance producer Jerin James many times, and another way to get to know him and his craft, is to check out his whitelisted remix of Billie Eilish’s “Chihiro”. It’s no wonder that Billie’s team gave a green light to Jerin because his version of the song transforms it into something they would have never thought of. In fact, I prefer it to the original, which I find too languid and repetitious. The house rhythm lends a tautness to the song, and Jerin’s synths and effects let it evolve into an unanticipated but pleasing direction. If anything, I think this remix of “Chihiro” could have even been longer and would not have lost any of its effect. Do support this one by visiting Jerin’s Soundcloud page (click on the photo above) and pressing the free download button while it’s there!

Moonwood, "Dreams"

MOONWOOD, “Dreams

Australian rock quintet Moonwood returns with “Dreams”, the kind of pop song that never goes out of vogue, yet the whole idea of such a song seems very foreign to radio stations right now. Given the now-confirmed reunion of Oasis, I’d certainly pitch “Dreams” to fans of that band as well as other similar rock bands of the late 90’s and early 2000’s like Manic Street Preachers or Arctic Monkeys. Over the past few years, Moonwood have had the penchant for creating earnest, well-played rock tracks that would sound great in a concert setting, and their song “Curfew” got to #5 on the BILLCS Top 30 at the top of the year. “Dreams” was concurrently released with another new song called “Ghosts” so be sure to check them both out.

Tyler Garrett, "Sanctuary" (Club Mix)

TYLER GARRETT, “Sanctuary” (House Mix)

“Sanctuary” is another compelling and enjoyable slice of emotional electronica by L.A.’s Tyler Garrett. This one goes a bit deeper than some of his other recent singles by combining trance vibes with deep house beats, and a romantic story with a sense of urgency. The House Mix of the song plays out just a tad better than the original mix and should have no problem finding a home in dance clubs that play darker electronic tunes with trance vibes. It’s another stalwart effort by Tyler, who is becoming much more consistent with his brand of dance music and developing variety within the genre.

Sean Smith, "Little Song"

SEAN SMITH, “Little Song”

It takes a lot to turn rather sad circumstances around into a positive and optimistic story, and UK singer/songwriter Sean Smith has done just that with “Little Song”. Sean and his wife have been trying to start a family, which unfortunately has resulted in pregnancies that ended early. And so “Little Song” puts some extra encouragement out into the world as Sean sings about waiting for and welcoming a child, whenever s/he comes into the world. For anyone that has been through these circumstances before, the song will bring on some tears, so keep a box of tissues handy. Those who were successful in conceiving a child after a number of attempts will identify with Sean’s story. As a parent of two myself (now adults), our children are precious and there is nothing in the world like parenthood and guiding a child through the different stages of life, however difficult they may be. I wish Sean and others in the same situation every opportunity and hope that their wishes come true.

Lily Lane, "Crisis"

LILY LANE, “Crisis”

Boston-born, NYC-based singer/songwriter Lily Lane is back with “Crisis”. You may not associate that word with falling in love, but Lily has picked that special point in time when your adrenaline is racing, you’re happy, and you can’t wait for what’s next – a crisis of love. Lily, who was previously a social media star and is the sister of Tucker Halpern of the Grammy-nominated duo Sofi Tukker, has one of those potent, ear-catching and versatile voices, and it’s used to great effect in “Crisis” against some big synths and high energy. The subtler moments of the song cry out ‘oooh I’m in love” and listeners will be more than happy to revel in them with her. Lily’s song “Bad” also got to #9 on the BILLCS Top 30 a few years back, so I’m looking forward to hearing more from her.

#BILLCSTop30 #699 – August 26/24

I’ve got nothing else to add about the new chart as it approaches its 700th edition (!!), so I’ll let the music do the talking.

Remember – my blog posts are all about DISCOVERY, so let the music in!!

Check out my ONLINE RADIO SHOWS below as they are now directly tied in with this blog.  As most of you know, I host 3 online radio shows – The Big 20 and two iterations of Your Weekend New Music Mix – and produce 2 online radio segments – my new music and retro picks of the week – that are all pre-recorded. The Big 20 and the picks of the week are happily being syndicated and you can find the current schedule for all at the bottom of the home page of this blog.

Sam Feldt, JVKE, Anitta, "Mi Amor"

“Mi Amor” reigns supreme for another chart for Dutch dance producer Sam Feldt and vocalists JVKE and Anitta. Let’s keep the summery sounds going for the next while!  Can’t wait to see Sam perform in Toronto at Woodbine Park on September 21 with Kygo and Hayla!

Kygo, Zak Abel, Nile Rodgers, "For Life"

Speaking of Kygo, climbing 4-2 is another triad of talent, Norwegian producer Kygo with vocalist/songwriter Zak Abel and the legendary Nile Rodgers, with “For Life” (above). Both Kygo and Nile have been to #2 on my chart before, Kygo in 2019 with Whitney Houston on “Higher Love”, and Nile with Daft Punk and Pharrell Williams on “Get Lucky” in 2013.  And you’re seeing/hearing double Nile in the Top 5 as Purple Disco Machine’s collaboration with him, Benjamin Ingrosso and Shenseea, “Honey Boy” (below), climbs 9-5!

Purple Disco Machine, Benjamin Ingrosso, Nile Rodgers, Shenseea, "Honey Boy"

Jubël, NOTD, "Chocolate"

Making short work of the Top 10 is the irresistible “Chocolate” (above)by Swedish production duos Jubël and NOTD, which zips up 10-3.  You can also check out NOTD’s collab with Why Don’t We’s Corbyn Besson, “Panic”, below.NOTD, Corbyn Besson, "Panic"Benson Boone, "Slow It Down"

Benson Boone’s “Slow It Down” (above) rises 13-7, becoming his 6th Top 10 entry. Check out Benson’s new single, not on his Fireworks and Rollerblades album, called “Pretty Slowly”, below.

Benson Boone, "Pretty Slowly"

The Boy From The South, "Space Party"

Also new to the Top 10 are the thought-provoking “Space Party” (above) by Spains’ The Boy From The South, up 12-9, becoming his third consecutive Top 10 entry, and Greyson Chance’s heartfelt “Rearview Mirror” (11-10, below), which is his 6th in the Top 10.

Greyson Chance, "Rearview Mirror"

Kygo, Zak Abel, Nile Rodgers, "For Life"

Making short work of the Top 10 is “For Life” (above) by Kygo, Zak Abel and Nile Rodgers, which zips up the chart 10-4. Kygo’s other chart entry, “Without You” (below) with previous chart-topper Hayla, climbs 27-21.

Kygo, Hayla, "Without You"

The Fastest Riser on the chart is Kygo’s collaboration with UK singer/songwriter Hayla, from Kygo’s self-titled album, “Without You”, which soars 21-11, featuring another memorable powerhouse vocal by Hayla.

The Knocks, Dolores Forever, "Lover"

“Lover” is the shiny recent release by The Knocks and indie duo Dolores Forever, which surges 19-13.

Lucas & Steve, LAWRENT, Jordan Shaw, "End Of Time"

“End Of Time” by Dutch production duo Lucas & Steve and British producer LAWRENT with UK singer/songwriter Jordan Shaw moves up 24-17, and recently reached #1 on the North American dance radio chart.

Jude York, "Monaco"

Right behind is Australian singer/songwriter/producer Jude York’s first solo dance outing called “Monaco”, which bounces 25-18.

Alex Sampson, "Pretty Baby"

Canadian singer/songwriter Alex Sampson has made it to the live performances as a contestant on TV’s “America’s Got Talent” and we wish him all the best. His recent single “Pretty Baby”, which he performed on the show, climbs 29-23.

Zedd, Bea Miller, "Out Of Time"

As the release of his latest album Telos approaches, Zedd’s collaboration with singer Bea Miller, “Out Of Time”, is the Highest Debut on the chart at #25.  The new album also features John Mayer, Muse, and the late Jeff Buckley, so I’ll be curious how it all turns out. “Out Of Time” is Zedd’s fifth chart entry and first appearance on this chart since 2017’s “Stay” (with Alessia Cara)!!

The Killers, "Bright Lights"

Also making an appearance for the first time since 2017 (is this a pattern?) are The Killers with “Bright Lights” at #26.  It’s their 10th chart entry, and revives the big energetic rock sound that Jim Steinman songs brought to singers like Meat Loaf, Bonnie Tyler and many others.

JIMIN, "Who"

BTS’ JIMIN gets his third chart entry with “Who”, the lead single from his latest EP Muse, which arrives at #27. Like last year’s “Like Crazy” (my #1 song of 2023), it’s moody and has a crackerjack hook, but JIMIN has such a great voice he doesn’t need all of the production effects that have been added.

“I Adore You” has come out of left field to make a huge splash on the European dance scene, and it’s starting to make inroads in North America as well. For those of you who are missing new music by The Weeknd in your mix, “I Adore You” should help fill that voice thanks to a similar-sounding vocal by Daecolm as set to a percolating Afro-Latin beat. It’s a collaboration between three producers who have made their own marks within the last few years. I actually saw French producer HUGEL play a diverse and interesting set in Miami a few years back that drew a small crowd to the dance floor like a magnet, and his success has bloomed since.  German/Croatian producer Topic helped create a much imitated melancholy dance sound of the first years of this decade with musical partner A7S in his international hit “Breaking Me”. Swedish producer Arash has infused Persian and western sounds into his releases with significant European success.  Like with Purple Disco Machine’s recent multi-artist collab “Honey Boy”, when the right talents are meshed together, something special evolves, and you should be hearing “I Adore You” on national dance music radio stations in the coming weeks.

Todd Terry, Shannon, "It's Over Love" (Janika Tenn remix)

TODD TERRY, SHANNON, “It’s Over Love” (Janika Tenn remix)

“It’s Over Love” is one of legendary house producer Todd Terry’s biggest hits, reaching #1 on Billboard’s Dance Club Play chart as well as #16 on the UK chart in 1998. The trendy eurohouse flavour of the time has been updated by Estonian producer Janika Tenn in her new remix to enhance its lilting, sophisticated melody as well as a classic vocal by Shannon (yes, of “Let The Music Play” fame).  So the contrasting dance anthem vibe of the original has been replaced with a piano house hook that brings out the breakup theme of the song a bit more. I often enjoy what new producers can bring to the table, and so apparently does Todd Terry, because “It’s Over Love” has the potential be a hit all over again in Janika’s remix.  It’s highly recommended to club DJ’s.

Matoma, Rufus, "I Love You, Bye"

MATOMA, RUFUS, “I Love You, Bye”

Norway’s Matoma had one of the best years in his career musically in 2023 with a slew of energetic and diverse dance tracks. While still in the dance music realm, his latest release is a breakup song, “I Love You, Bye”. Matoma has a flair for choosing intriguing vocalists, and he introduces relative newcomer, British R&B vocalist/songwriter Rufus, who provides the vulnerability and soulfulness that really ignite the song. It’s not hard to relate to “I Love You, Bye” for anyone who has had to leave a relationship reluctantly but for very good reasons. And it’s great for Matoma to keep challenging himself with solid results. “I Love You, Bye” also has a familiar co-writer in its credits, veteran singer/songwriter Gary Go, most noted for his vocal on Benny Benassi’s Grammy-winning dance classic “Cinema”.

Paul Hetherington, "Thrill of the Chase"

PAUL HETHERINGTON, “Thrill Of The Chase”

Australian singer/songwriter Paul Hetherington has been working hard since his last release five years ago to refine his sound and come up with songs that suit a specific direction. Following up his recent “Dirty Mind”, which has been finding its way to some club and radio play, is the 90’s British electropop flavoured “Thrill Of The Chase”. This one’s for anyone who enjoys 90’s electropop songs by Erasure and Pet Shop Boys, as well as the revival outside of England in songs in the 2000’s by the likes of Britney Spears and Lady Gaga.  Paul’s vocal is his best yet, and the theme of the song is captivating enough, after all who doesn’t enjoy being sought after (or maybe even the one doing the chasing)? The song sustains its 4 minute plus length which is great for clubs, but I would suggest an edit that might make it a little more radio-friendly. There are many performers still creating timeless electropop, among them fellow Australian Peter Wilson and Scotland’s Allan Jay, so make room for Paul Hetherington’s “Thrill of the Chase” on your favourite electropop playlist.

MGR Mike, "Ghana Groove"

MGR MIKE, “Ghana Groove”

For club DJ’s looking to give their patrons happy feet, Nashville-based producer MGR Mike and his “Ghana Groove” should do that trick with ease. He takes what I assume is an excerpt of a Ghanaian song and sets it to a playful rhythm that marries the best of early disco (think Manu Dibango’s “Soul Makossa” or Van McCoy’s “The Hustle” for inspiration) creatively with 2020’s nu disco. Once unleashed, “Ghana Groove” is irresistible and you’re bound to move one or more body parts to it in the process. Songs like “Ghana Groove” work well in clubs when fun is the only item on the agenda.

Four Nights, "Safe"

FOUR NIGHTS, “Safe”

Back in 2021, I enjoyed Irish singer/songwriter Four Nights’ chipper indie pop/dance release “Want You Always” so much that it got up to #8 on the BILLCS Top 30.  The bedroom producer talent that is Tommy Buckley has returned with another appealing song called “Safe”. This song is a little less straight-forward featuring a vulnerable vocal set against an uncomplicated production as Tommy ponders whether or not he should pursue his crush, ultimately feeling he hasn’t got enough to offer and so he “keeps his feelings safe”. The song is totally relatable, and has an easy but uplifting flow, which makes the listener feel both supportive and engaged. “Safe” is another great example of where less-is-more works so well, and makes you want to get to know the music of Four Nights a little more.

Jon Mullane, "Walking Away"

JON MULLANE, “Walking Away”

Halifax singer/songwriter Jon Mullane follows up his fun singalong “The Sun In Summertime”, with “Walking Away”. This is a late 70’s pop-flavoured track about being caught up in the wrong kind of relationship, but knowing all along that moving on is the right thing to do. “Walking Away” dispenses with flash and effects, and will get your attention with its classic song structure and memorable melody as well as Jon’s terrific, earthy tones. It’s not hard to recognize a fine, well-produced song at first listen and “Walking Away” will grab you when you least expect it.

Plasi, "Innocent"

PLÀSI, “Innocent”

Plàsi is a Crete-born Swedish singer/songwriter (real name Mikael Bitzarakis) who has released his new EP, Salamina, which is named after the island off the coast of Athens. For Plàsi, Salamina was a place of inspiration to write the songs on this album. “Innocent” is a highlight of the album, a well-crafted song that has a medieval ambiance in its lovely, soft arrangement, and encourages young people to spread their wings and explore before the everyday burdens of life put that on hold. It’s a gentle but inspiring song with a folk flavour but it’s hard to pin it down into one genre. Plàsi’s style and vocal delivery remind me of British singer Al Stewart (“Year Of The Cat”), with a similar bent for weaving compelling stories.

BILLCS New Music Report – August 14/24 with new songs by MENEW & @Dzekomusic, @KCandtheSunshineB & @DJMartinee, @TheDiscoFries & @Tiffanytunes, @iamLouisLaRoche, @PeterFoldy, @MaxParkermusic, @DoctorNoize & Justin Roberts @musicianJustin, and Roisin O’Hagan @rosey_roisin

In this week’s BILLCS New Music Report, I have an assortment of different shades of pop and dance music, complete with contributions from some veteran performers from whom you may not have heard much in recent years. Every one of these releases is independent and I continue to urge music fans to think outside of the box that pre-programmed terrestrial radio stations are offering in order to find the gems that rightly belong in your playlists.

In the Report, you can also check out my pick of the week, along with a record of the week from the host of online radio’s “Top 40 Timeline”, “Big Daddy” Russ Horton, plus “Modern Hype” online radio host DJ Hunter’s “Bop of the Week”.  “The Musicman” James Rogers’ Classic Five selection for us from the heart of the new wave era, 1983. If you missed them, you’ll find out what songs are #1 and the Fastest Riser on the latest BILLCS Top 30.

The BILLCS New Music Report is always a work-in-progress and I welcome your suggestions so feel free to contact me at through my social media links right here.

MENEW, Dzeko, "Never Us"

MENEW, DZEKO, “Never Us”

There are very good reasons why “Never Us” has come seemingly out of nowhere to begin flying up the North American dance radio charts. The song is an amalgam of the emotional rock popularized by Coldplay and The Killers from the British alternative rock group of brothers, MENEW (pronounced “menu”), but further fused with electronic wizardry by Canadian dance producer Dzeko, whose music hasn’t come up on my radar in a while. MENEW have had another side project, not surprisingly called Brothers, in the EDM genre, so it’s not like their interest in the genre is fly by night. “Never Us” is beautifully sung and affecting, and if you know Dzeko’s music from the last decade (such as “Jackie Chan” with Tiesto) then you know you’ll get a tidy mix that doesn’t overburden you with effects. “Never Us” sounds extremely fresh but familiar, and dance music fans be hearing a lot more of it on the radio and at festivals and clubs.

K.C. & The Sunshine Band, DJ Martinee, "I Get To Love You" (Eric Kupper Future Disco Mix Radio)

K.C. & THE SUNSHINE BAND, DJ MARTINEE, “I Get To Love You” (Eric Kupper Future Disco Mix)

Never in my wildest dreams would I think I’d be writing about a NEW K.C. & The Sunshine Band record in 2024. I was glad I got to play the group’s music on occasion on college radio and at events back in the day. And their self-titled second album was one of the first albums I bought with my own money. But here we are, more dance songs are surfacing with 1970’s disco-styled arrangements, and the timing couldn’t be better for this K.C. & The Sunshine Band release, “I Get To Love You”. Harry Wayne Casey’s still recognizable voice is out front, but he’s supported well on the record in a collaboration with Lewis A. Martineé (aka DJ Martinee), the award-winning fellow Florida producer noted for his work with Exposé in the 80’s and 90’s, and numerous other stars since that time. And then bring in Eric Kupper for a dazzling “future disco” remix of the song, and you have a club hit in the making. K.C. & The Sunshine Band first broke out in the U.K. in 1974, and I think “I Get To Love You” fits the slightly different mix of dance music over there. Overall I don’t think the nu disco sound of “I Get To Love You” is recognizable enough to be immediately connected to the 70’s heyday of K.C. & The Sunshine Band, but get a savvy club DJ to preface it in a mix with a remix of one of their earlier hits, then it will make sense to the audience and a great time once again will be had by all!

Disco Fries, Tiffany, "I Think We're Alone Now"

DISCO FRIES, TIFFANY, “I Think We’re Alone Now”

“I Think We’re Alone Now” mach 2024 is an unexpected surprise. If you’ve ever pictured what Tiffany’s 1987 version of Tommy James & The Shondells 1967 hit “I Think We’re Alone Now” might sound like reimagined as a dance track, then the singer and NYC production stalwarts The Disco Fries have put it all together just for you. Truth be told, I didn’t like Tiffany’s hit version, but am a fan of the original, and this new version works very well. For one thing, Tiffany’s vocal is soooo much better! I guess more than 35 years of performing is showing its true colours here with a solid, well-rounded vocal, and The Fries guys have updated the production with appropriate bells and whistles to make the song turn heads again when played in a club, reintroducing it to a younger audience in the process.

Louis La Roche, "So Much"

LOUIS LA ROCHE, “So Much”

“So Much” is a stylish early 2000’s throwback by UK electronic dance producer Louis La Roche from his forthcoming album Anglia Square. Not too many songs use vocal effects very well to create a hook, but “So Much” will get stuck in your head because of one that is pretty darned infectious. “So Much” otherwise has a soft and alluring uncredited female vocal, that allows Louis’ other crisp synth and production work to make its magic around it. It mainly reminds me of early releases by the likes of Armin van Buuren and Above & Beyond just as techno and trance were becoming less underground dance phenomena. The song has potential for early evening night club play and would fit into any dance radio format.

Peter Foldy, "The Only Thing That Matters"

PETER FOLDY, “The Only Thing That Matters”

L.A. based Canadian singer/songwriter Peter Foldy has been flourishing while making movies these days, but I’m glad he always finds time to release new music, and so he has unveiled “The Only Thing That Matters”. This song makes a switch from his brighter recent pop of “Jump Like This” or “Fun Fun Fun” for something a little more topical. “The Only Thing That Matters” is about an obsession with the object of one’s affection, when the only thing that’s important is making love. The melody is suitably enticing, and accordingly Peter’s vocal shifts from upper to lower register. Peter’s fans will enjoy the change of pace in “The Only Thing That Matters”, while more casual listeners could gravitate to it too and appreciate its uncomplicated pop flair with a darker theme.

Max Parker, "Rush"

MAX PARKER, “Rush”

Flash back to 2021 and Top 40 and AC radio in Canada was spinning the infectious “Good Time” by Toronto singer Max Parker, who then went on to release a debut album called 17, which compiled some of his previous singles. 22 year old Max has been away from recording after being cast as Benvolio in the theatrical film “Verona’s Romeo & Juliet”, to be released next year with stars such as Rebel Wilson, Rupert Everett and Jim Sheridan in the cast. Happily, “Rush” essentially picks up where he left off, and is a highly enjoyable guitar-driven pop bop which he co-wrote with producer Derek Hoffman. The urgent pop of “Rush” will appeal to fans of Justin Bieber, Johnny Orlando and Tyler Shaw with its slick production and radio-friendly sound.

Doctor Noize, Justin Roberts, "I'm Listening"

DOCTOR NOIZE, JUSTIN ROBERTS, “I’m Listening”

“I’m Listening” is an out-of-the-blue delight brought to you by producer and multi-instrumentalist Doctor Noize and five time Grammy nominee (for children’s recordings), singer Justin Roberts. It’s a song for all ages, mainly voice and piano with some additional instrumentation added later. Everyone feels good when they have been heard, and “I’m Listening” captures that desire in a time when it is needed the most, along with mutual understanding and trust. “I’m Listening” plays out like a song you might hear in a theatrical production, so it’s not the type of song you’re going to find on radio playlists or on Spotify’s discovery playlists. The added touch of an uncredited child’s vocal (belonging to Isabella Mass) near the end drives it all home. Both Doctor Noize (Cory Cullinan) and Justin Roberts were both previously educators, and Stanford-educated Doctor Noize is also known in the US for his inspiring presentations. The illustrated video (above) for “I’m Listening” is simple and nicely done.  An additional thought: Because of its message and excellent vocal, I think “I’m Listening” could find a broader audience in an alternate version with a more fulsome production, if one should ever be considered.

Roisin O'Hagan, "Midnight Indigo"

ROISIN O’HAGAN, “Midnight Indigo”

At a time where some pop singers are choosing to cross over to country music, you’ll notice that the reverse is happening for other singers. Essex, UK born singer/songwriter Roisin O’Hagan released a Nashville-produced EP called Dreamstate a few years back, but has switched gears to alternative pop for “Midnight Indigo”. Despite its bright melody and forceful guitar work, “Midnight Indigo” is about a fraught relationship that comes to an end when one of the parties pulls the plug without warning. Roisin’s breezy vocal style, which recalls Sheryl Crow and Jordan Miller of The Beaches, layers the sad story with an appealing sepia that you’ll cut through with subsequent listens. “Midnight Indigo” is a good start for Roisin in the alternative pop stream and signals that a lot of growth and potential are in store.

Jubël, NOTD, "Chocolate"

Swedish production duos Jubël and NOTD climb 18-10 with “Chocolate”

#BILLCSTop30 #698 – August 12/24

One rather static-looking chart two weeks ago begets a busy chart brimming with activity, which includes another new #1 plus five debuts!  These days it’s either feast or famine as I want to showcase the songs that I enjoy the most at this time, and to let them linger up to the maximum 10 chart appearances (that’s 20 weeks) that has been in place for the last 26 years. The BILLCS Top 30 initially started off as a monthly Top 10 but by August 1998 it became a Top 30! I’ve resisted temptation to make it a Top 40 as I wouldn’t want any songs peaking in the 30’s. Whether they get there or not, my intention with adding songs to the chart is with the hope that they reach the Top 10.

It’s the rather unlikely collaboration of Dutch producer Sam Feldt, American singer/songwriter JVKE and Brazilian multi-talent Anitta that takes over leaping 7-1 with “Mi Amor” (above), a song that has the heart of summer love at its core. It’s the first chart-topper for Sam and Anitta, and the third for JVKE, following his breakout “Golden Hour”, and “Hero” with Martin Garrix.  JVKE has another new collaboration that’s percolating with South Korean group ENHYPEN and the English version of “XO (Only If You Say Yes)”, which you can check out below.

ENHYPEN, JVKE, "XO (Only If You Say Yes") (English version)

thefatrat, RIELL, "Myself & I"

“Myself & I” has gone to even greater new heights this week for Germany’s TheFatRat and Canada’s RIELL, advancing 5-3.

The Chainsmokers, ELIO, "Bad Advice"

Soaring into the Top 10 12-5 is the rather overlooked “Bad Advice” by The Chainsmokers with Canadian singer ELIO. It’s a new favourite by the boys for me and is culled from their EP No Hard Feelings. It’s their 9th Top 5 entry.

Nemo, "The Code"

There are still three more songs that debut in the Top 10:

  • EuroVision winner “The Code” (above) by Switzerland’s Nemo glides 11-8.
  • Nile Rodgers gets a concurrent Top 10 entry on Purple Disco Machine and Benjamin Ingrosso’s “Honey Boy” (below), with vocalist Shenseea, which rises 13-9. It’s Purple Disco Machine’s second Top 10 entry, and it’s Nile’s fourth where he has been billed.
  • Swedish production duos Jubēl and NOTD have the Fastest Riser on the chart, advancing 18-10 with “Chocolate” (also below). It’s NOTD’s second Top 10 entry following their 2021 #1 “Nobody”.

Purple Disco Machine, Benjamin Ingrosso, Nile Rodgers, Shenseea, "Honey Boy"

Jubël, NOTD, "Chocolate"

Crash Adams, "Hotel Party"

Starting to make waves all over North America is Canadian duo Crash Adams with the rollicking “Hotel Party” climbing 21-17.

The Knocks, Dolores Forever, "Lover"

The Knocks and Dolores Forever have a real charmer with the bright dream pop/dance fusion of “Lover” (25-19).

GT_Ofice, Matthew Topper, Robbie Rosen, "Ecstasy"

“Ecstasy” is a powerful  dance banger from Miami’s GT_ofice, New Jersey’s Matthew Topper, and NYC’s Robbie Rosen, which rises 26-20.

Lucas & Steve, LAWRENT, Jordan Shaw, "End Of Time"

“End Of Time” is the Top 10 North American dance radio hit for Dutch dance producers Lucas & Steve, UK dance producer LAWRENT, and UK vocalist/songwriter Jordan Shaw, which moves up 30-24.

Jude York, "Monaco"

At the top of the debuts is the stunning pop/dance release by Australia’s Jude York called “Monaco”, which bows at #25. Jude has actually appeared before on the chart, but under other names.

Starsights, George Gleeson, "Leo (Flicker)"

At #26 we have the arrival of “Leo (Flicker)” by the dance production collective called Starsigns featuring UK singer/songwriter George Gleeson. It’s a solid blend of emotional pop and house music. Starsigns consists of three producers, all of Asian heritage – yetep (South Korean), Manila Killa (Filipino) and MYRNE (Singaporean). It’s first time appearances for yetep and MYRNE, but the sixth for Manila Killa.

Sian, Bobby Nourmand, James LeSal, "Control"

Did you know that as music fans your body is controlled by giant black speakers?  Well maybe not, but L.A. based dance producers SIAN and Bobby Nourmand will have you convinced otherwise during the hypnotic “Control”, which arrives at #28. It’s a unique record with memorable verses by NYC spoken word artist David LeSal. It’s Bobby Nourmand’s 8th appearance on the chart. He’s been to #1 twice with the equally different “D E E P in NY” (2017) and “Subterranean/Estranged” (2019). The latter is the only ‘double-sided’ single to appear on the chart.

Alex Sampson, "Pretty Baby"

Canada’s Alex Sampson returns to the chart with the retro-pop ballad “Pretty Baby” at #29. Alex charted last year with the bouncy pop of “WANT YOU!” (#16). “Pretty Baby” takes a successful dip into JVKE and Stephen Sanchez territory, which won over the judges recently on “America’s Got Talent”, so Alex is advancing to the live shows.

Fly By Midnight, "SuperFine"

Rounding out the debuts at #30 is the super-catchy and summery “SuperFine” by NYC’s duo of Justins, Fly By Midnight, who make their chart debut.

BILLCS New Music Report – August 8/24 with new songs by @TheKnocks & @YELLE, @imZachHerron, Sleepy Benjamin, @NatisaGogol, @Mercer_music and @HazellHD

After a week away in New York City for a vacation, my brain is still in vacation mode, particularly after bad weather stranded me there for an additional days, resulting in some stress trying to make sure that I could get back home yesterday. But besides the weather day, one thing that I’ll always remember is seeing the outstanding YEBBA sing with the Robert Glasper band in Central Park. And as I’ve already mentioned on social media, I’ll never listen to her song “October Sky” the same way again.

In the Report, you can also check out my pick of the week, along with a record of the week from the host of online radio’s “Top 40 Timeline”, “Big Daddy” Russ Horton, plus “Modern Hype” online radio host DJ Hunter’s “Bop of the Week”.  “The Musicman” James Rogers’ Classic Five returns with song choices from 1974-1977. Plus you’ll find out what the BILLCS Top 30 looked like this week in 2009!

The BILLCS New Music Report is always a work-in-progress and I welcome your suggestions so feel free to contact me at through my social media links right here.

The Knocks, YELLE, "All The Time/Tout le temps"

THE KNOCKS, YELLE, “All The Time/Tout le temps”

Enduring dance production duo The Knocks are definitely in an expansion phase of their usual likeable, solid house sound. Their most recent single, “Lover” (currently rising up the BILLCS Top 30), fuses dream pop with house music. “All the Time/Tout le temps” sees the guys tackling their own variation of Europop in collaboration with longtime French electronic duo YELLE, from whom we don’t hear too often. The track has the benefit of a sophisticated bilingual vocal by YELLE’s namesake singer, and the results are fresh, crisp and fun (Dragonette’s Martina Sorbara is also a co-writer). Dance producers themselves should pay attention to this release because I think The Knocks are being quite innovative with their production choices. Let’s see in six months if others have caught on and come aboard. Above all, The Knocks’ fans will love it and it should definitely find new friends, particularly overseas and in French-speaking places (France, Belgium, Quebec).

Zach Herron, "caroline"

ZACH HERRON, “caroline”

It’s not too late for another anthemic, summery favourite, and Why Don’t We’s 23 year old Texas native Zach Herron has released his first indie solo single, “caroline”. It’s one enjoyable and catchy pop bop with a great vocal and a bright, zingy power pop flavour. There will come a day when we will see Why Don’t We back together, but “caroline” isn’t quite their brand of harder, edgier pop/rock which sometimes gravitates to loud Imagine Dragon tendencies. It perhaps is more influenced by early 2010’s pop like Katy Perry and One Direction. Like fellow member Corbyn Besson, Zach has started to carve out his own path with solo songs like “caroline” and we’ll be hearing a lot more from him.

Sleepy Benjamin, "3 Things"

SLEEPY BENJAMIN, “3 Things”

The latest release from Australian indie pop artist Sleepy Benjamin finds him tackling for the first time, I believe, a breakup song. As unfortunate as they may be, for years I’ve been firmly of the belief that breakups make the best food for songwriting, and “3 Things” is also one of Ben’s best and bolder songs. He’s been dazzling us with his wordplay on some recent releases, and “3 Things” has plenty of it, set to a rather whimsical melody considering the nature of the song, but it all comes together nicely. It may have taken a few cues from songs like Gayle’s “ABCDEFU” and Leah Kate’s “8 Things I Hate About You”, and its lyrics are pointed, but not vicious. “3 Things” is for pop fans looking for an infectious, to-the-point song that comes from an earnest place.

Natisa Gogol, "Into The Wild"

NATISA GOGOL, “Into The Wild”

Natisa Gogol is a new singer from Kyiv, Ukraine, now based in Prague, who offers a female empowerment anthem in the form of the striking and ear-catching “Into The Wild”. With a stunning voice full of emotion and restraint and an alluring presence, Natisa delivers a song from a woman’s perspective and how a woman can use her unique sensibilities to make things happen. It’s a great introduction to Natisa, who has been releasing music for the two years since she fled Ukraine during the current war, and shows that she is one of many women vocalists, including several that you have read about in the last year in this blog, working outside of the mainstream of the pop spectrum. Check out the video for the song, shot in Portugal, in some scenes in which the crew were employing their best skills to capture beautiful shots and cinematography under some duresse for their art.

Mercer, "Overrr"

MERCER, “Overrr”

French dance producer Mercer is back with one of four singles that he has released recently and after “Disco Sermon” which you read about in these blog pages a few weeks back. “Overrr” is slick and infectious Eurodisco with a pleasing uncredited vocal, which is cleverly based on a refrain by Michael Jackson (cue the single’s artwork) in The Jacksons’ song “Wondering Who” (lead vocal by Jackie Jackson) from their 1980 album Triumph. It’s refreshing to hear new releases like “Overrr” because it sounds so different from what is being produced in North America, yet comes from the same disco and electronic roots. And because of that, the song would have a distinct presence in an R&B-flavoured Eurodisco set.

Hazell Dean, "Whatever I Do (Wherever I Go)" (JNR remix retro mix)

HAZELL DEAN, “Whatever I Do (Wherever I Go)” (JNR remix retro mix)

To celebrate its 40th anniversary, UK dance music queen Hazell Dean has re-rereleased her Top 5 UK smash “Whatever I Do (Wherever I Go)” in an effective retro remix by British producer JNR. The song was one of Stock-Aitken-Waterman’s earliest hits, and JNR’s fresh remix keeps the essence of the SAW magic and Hazell’s splendid vocal while adding current synths and production technique in a fast-paced, zesty mix. Fans of Hazell and SAW will be pleased, and because the song was not a hit in North America, it could easily win over new fans in the process. “Whatever I Do” is also available on the remix EP in a ’24 radio remix and extended versions of both.

BILLCS Top 30 FLASHBACK CHART – 2009

Ah yes, it was a simpler time when our connection to artists and their music was growing on MySpace, and many dance producers were starting to deliver free downloads of originals and remixes through Soundcloud. The MySpace phase would come crashing down within two years as Twitter, along with You Tube and Facebook, became the dominant social media platforms. My #1 song was from a promising Ottawa-based dance music singer who didn’t release a follow up to his indie album Human Geometry and sadly it’s not available on streaming services other than You Tube (below). The highest debut at #17, “Symphonies” by UK singer/songwriter Dan Black (a future BILLCS Top 30 #1), whose melody started life in The Notorious B.I.G. sampled “HYPNTZ”, which became available as a free download when he couldn’t get permission to release it. And at #26 is Swedish-American trio Miike Snow – aka Galantis (known then as Bloodshy & Avant) and Grammy and Oscar winner Andrew Wyatt. I saw them in concert in early 2010.

#BILLCSTop30 #697 – July 29/24

There isn’t much turnover on the new BILLCS Top 30 this week, and with so many  songs on the rise, there aren’t a lot of big moves except for the delightful song that is the Fastest Riser. But there’s a new #1 and maybe in two weeks after I’m back from NYC there will be more changeups happening on the chart.

Hayla, "Embers"

With the mid-summer dance grooves in full effect, there’s no better artist to be leading the chart than UK singer/songwriter HAYLA with her solo single “Embers” (2-1, above). HAYLA of course was recently on top of the chart for two months with John Summit and “Shiver”. And this week she has the Highest Debut with Kygo from his self-titled album, “Without You”, which bows at #27 (below). I’m still not done – HAYLA has just released the follow-up single called “Freefall”, which you can also hear below. With this year banging away for HAYLA, I can’t imagine what 2025 might be like!

Kygo, Hayla, "Without You"

Hayla, "Freefall"

The Fastest Riser, for a second chart in a row, belongs to Sam Feldt, JVKE and Anitta with “Mi Amor” (below), which soars 18-7. It’s Sam’s second Top 10 entry, Anitta’s first, and JVKE’s 6th, joining “This Is What Slow Dancing Feels Like” (#3) in the Top 10.

Sam Feldt, JVKE, Anitta, "Mi Amor"

Teddy Swims, "The Door"

New to the Top 10 are Teddy Swims’ soul-wrenching “The Door” (11-8, above) and Kygo’s second chart entry “For Life”, with vocalist Zak Abel and the legendary Nile Rodgers (12-10, below).

Kygo, Zak Abel, Nile Rodgers, "For Life"

Purple Disco Machine, Benjamin Ingrosso, Nile Rodgers, Shenseea, "Honey Boy"

Nile Rodgers also appears in the incredibly infectious “Honey Boy” with Purple Disco Machine, Benjamin Ingrosso and Shenseea, and it zips up the chart 21-13.

Greyson Chance, "Rearview Mirror"

The sombre but hopeful “Rearview Mirror” by Greyson Chance (above) is a classic example of thoughtful and authentic songs being released today by artists who are choosing to make music that is deliberately different from what is dominating the charts. It climbs 17-14, and Greyson has already followed it up with, “Haymaker”, which you can hear below.

Greyson Chance, "Haymaker"

The Boy From The South, "Space Party"

Another artist carving out his own lane is The Boy From The South with the clever “Space Party” climbing 20-15. The video above gives you more pause for thought as to what the song is about!

Jubël, NOTD, "Chocolate"

The irresistible “Chocolate” by Sweden’s Jubël and NOTD jumps into the Top 20 out of the gate, rising 24-18.

Crash Adams, "Hotel Party"

Also destined to get stuck in your head is “Hotel Party”, the summer’s unofficial party anthem, courtesy of my fellow Canadians Crash Adams, and it moves up 26-21.

Lucas & Steve, LAWRENT, Jordan Shaw, "End Of Time"

The second debut on the chart at #30 is the first entry for Dutch producers Lucas and Steve, noted for their collaborations with fellow European producers Sam Feldt, Afrojack, Bassjackers, RetroVision and more. It’s kind of a full circle moment as I saw a set by these guys probably back in 2019 in Miami. They team up with British producer LAWRENT and British vocalist/songwriter Jordan Shaw for “End Of Time”, which is already a North American dance radio smash. Jordan Shaw previously reached #1 with Boye & Sigvardt as the vocalist for “Microdose”.

BILLCS New Music Report – July 25/24 with new songs by Starsigns (@imyetep @manilakilla @myrnemusic), @SamSparro, Nathalie Miranda @vocalfreaknat, @KaceyFifield, @kayliox, Lucky Guess & @LoloMayhew, Jimmy Rich x Tony Daly x Victor Perry (@wallflowerperry) and @MaxSarre

It’s that time of year again where I venture to my current favourite place to visit, New York City (Manhattan). In fact on this day in both 2014 and 2018 I was in NYC. There’s no place like it and no shortage of things to do. I’ve been more than 20 times and there are always new parts of Manhattan to explore. I just pray for it not to be dripping with humidity as each day I’m there is expected to be over 30C. Because of this time away, there will be no BILLCS New Music Report next week, and the following one will appear on August 8 rather than the day before. I will have a new BILLCS Top 30 on Monday before I go.

In the Report, you can also check out my pick of the week, along with a record of the week from the host of online radio’s “Top 40 Timeline”, “Big Daddy” Russ Horton, plus “Modern Hype” online radio host DJ Hunter’s “Bop of the Week”. You’ll also find out what songs were in the Top 5 of the BILLCS Top 30 5-10-15-20-25 years ago! Please note that “The Musicman” James Rogers’ Classic Five is currently on hiatus.

The BILLCS New Music Report is always a work-in-progress and I welcome your suggestions so feel free to contact me at through my social media links right here.

Starsights, George Gleeson, "Leo (Flicker)"

STARSIGHTS, GEORGE GLEESON, “Leo (Flicker)”

Starsights is the name of a new collective of Asian-American electronic dance producers – Surprise! It’s yetep, Manila Killa and MYRNE!! In collaboration with British singer/songwriter George Gleeson, “Leo (Flicker)” is a memorable, anthemic slice of pop/dance that finds a similar happy medium outside of harder EDM that The Chainsmokers and Coldplay discovered with “Something Just Like This”. And like that timeless record, “Leo (Flicker)” has a great vocal against an emotional early 2010’s inspired melody, while the song weaves a story about resigning oneself to the end of a relationship. In any case the Starsights collective and the resulting “Leo (Flicker)” release kind of came out of left field this month, so don’t let this one slip through the many releases out there, and I’m looking forward to another Starsights song.

Sam Sparro, "Pressure" (RedTop mix)

SAM SPARRO, “Pressure” (RedTop mix)

I was delighted to find a Sam Sparro song on the Red Hot Organization’s latest release, the Red, Hot & Free Mixtape. Some songs simply slide under the radar, and this one, remixed by Swedish producer RedTop, was actually released a few years back, and is a worthy addition to this collection. The Red Hot & Free Mixtape also includes songs by the renown producer Arthur Baker, Bright Light Bright Light, Ultra Naté, Tituss Burgess, Imani Coppola and a remix of “Mon Cheri” by Sofi Tukker and Amadou & Mariam, a BILLCS Top 30 #2 in 2022. Like a lot of the Australia-born “Black and Gold” hitmaker’s releases, which have not been many these past few years, “Pressure” is timeless and relatable, with a slinky, funky groove that is an immediate call to the dance floor for clubs. So just let go, enjoy the great vocal, and let the rhythm take you away.

Nathalie Miranda, "U Got Soul"

NATHALIE MIRANDA, “U Got Soul”

This week’s new songs have been full of head-turns, and after catching my attention with a Christmas song last year, London’s Nathalie Miranda has returned with an unexpected bluesy pop belter, “U Got Soul”. And looks are deceptive – currently sporting a set of flaming red hair atop her small stature, Nathalie’s vocal on this track sounds like it should be coming from someone else, but in truth she’s got a natural flair for this vibrant soulful sound. “U Got Soul” is destined to be a crowd-pleaser in concert, one that you’ll be happy to get up with to sing along or cheer. It’s one of those solid songs that gets passed around through word of mouth, so don’t be surprised if you hear more about Nathalie and “You Got Soul”. Check out its fun video, which has some inspiration from Deee-Lite’s “Groove Is In The Heart”.

Kacey Fifield, "Dream Girl"

KACEY FIFIELD, “Dream Girl”

The flourishing music career of Kacey Fifield continues with a punchy song about being obsessive called “Dream Girl”. Like her recent single “Never Reply” from the well-received EP Nostalgia Haunts Me, “Dream Girl” is co-written with Smallpools’ Mike Kamerman and Winnetka Bowling League’s Sam Beresford, and produced by Sam, and the amped-up rock flavour complete with fuzzy-sounding guitar work really jibes well with Kacey’s lyrics and voice. “Dream Girl” highlights the extremes to which we will go when going beyond just liking or loving something/someone does not satisfy us enough. The song has a wry sense of humour, and the overall result is positive and versatile.

Kayliox, Chloe Doyon, "Off The Ground"

KAYLIOX, CHLOE DOYON, “Off The Ground”

Quickly following up last month’s “Memory Lane”, and to be included in an EP of the same name, is Quebec dance producer Kayliox who teams up with Quebec vocalist Chloé Doyon once again for “Off The Ground”.  I like how this song initially focuses on Chloé’s vocal while introducing its tech house forward synth work, then it builds auspiciously, adding more layers of seamless production until the key drop is unleashed. From that point onward, “Off The Ground” turns into a fierce rave up, and this is one that dance club DJ’s will enjoy the most, especially with an extended version. I’m looking forward to what’s next in line for Kayliox’s EP.

Lucky Guess, Lauren Mayhew, "Feels So Right"

LUCKY GUESS, LAUREN MAYHEW, “Feels So Right”

Lucky Guess is an Indianapolis-based production duo of Samuel Schmelzer and Tom Huettner, who have been releasing music these past five years, and along the way have been solidifying worldwide DJ support, and have had releases through labels like Spinnin’ and Revealed. With “Feels So Right”, they’ve teamed up with Florida multi-talent Lauren Mayhew, who works some dynamic and playful vocal magic.  “Feels So Right” is one tight tech-house banger that showcases all of its talents well – but we’re left a bit wanting after the song finishes at the 2 minute mark, so an extended version, especially for clubs, would be most welcome, and would benefit the release as a whole. As is, “Feels So Right” is enough of a sinfully sizzling rollercoaster ride that if it gets in enough of the right ears, it could be around for a while. Don’t sleep on this one!

Jimmy Rich, Tony Daly, Victor Perry, "Paradigm"

JIMMY RICH, TONY DALY, VICTOR PERRY, “Paradigm”

It’s been a while since NYC’s Victor Perry graced these blog pages with his silky vocal and creative songwriting, but he’s back with “Paradigm” in collaboration with Italian producers Jimmy Rich and Tony Daly, with whom he recorded last year’s “Gemini”. “Paradigm” is smooth and inviting deep house release with Eurohouse flavours and a catchy refrain. In the song, Victor wants to get the object of his affection’s attention by seeing their paradigm, which is another way of wanting to look at something but through their eyes. The song moves along briskly and is available in both radio edit and extended versions as a two song single.

Max Sarre, "Brother"

MAX SARRE, “Brother”

“Brother” is a cheery and warm slice of straight-forward pop music brought to you by 22 year old rising London-based talent Max Sarre. It’s an affecting song which could be as much about a relationship with a brother as it could be a best friend who’s always there for you to turn to when needed. In some ways thematically it reminds me of Coldplay’s big 2005 hit “Talk”. Vocally, Max is engaging and spot on, and “Brother” will appeal easily to fans of Ed Sheeran and Charlie Puth. Max has released about a dozen singles and two EP’s in the last four years, and “Brother” looks to be the start of a positive new era for him.

BILL’S NEW MUSIC PICK OF THE WEEK

My New Music Pick of the Week  is a 5-7 minute radio segment that airs on several online radio stations around the world, and debuts throughout the summer each Wednesday at 10pm EST on The Big 20 on Halton Hills Radio Online. “The 3D Variety Show” in which it normally debuts on Tuesdays, is on hiatus and will return in September.

Crash Adams, "Hotel Party"

Canadian duo Crash Adams are guaranteed to light up your event with “Hotel Party”

“BIG DADDY” RUSS HORTON’S RECORD OF THE WEEK

“Big Daddy” Russ Horton is the host of the “Top 40 Timeline” radio program and owner of online station Halton Hills Radio Online. You can hear my Retro Pick of the Week every week on the “Top 40 Timeline”. Russ’ record of the week can also be heard each week on “The Big 20”.

Valley, "Bass Player's Brother"

Toronto trio Valley return with “Bass Player’s Brother”

Jude York, "Monaco"

JUDE YORK, “Monaco”

Australia’s Jude York has acquired a worldwide following with his unique brand of pop, sometimes mixed with danceable rhythms. From the swoon-worthy old school sounds of “I Won’t Need To Dream” to the lyrical wordplay towards the man of his affection with “Mr. Porcelain” and the pop rave up of “All My Friends Hate Me”, all previously written up in this blog, Jude has put his thoughts and personality on full display these past few years. “Monaco” brings it all together with Kylie Minogue flair in a song completely written and produced by Jude. It’s got an irresistible chorus which transports you to sunny Monaco for a three minute pop-dance vacation. Jude has recorded dance music previously under other names, so this is a full-circle moment. “Monaco” has huge dance radio potential and its release on Spinnin’ should help it get there.

Mercer, "Disco Sermon featuring Ron Carroll"

MERCER, “Disco Sermon featuring Ron Carroll”

French dance producer Mercer has had the distinction of acquiring three number one’s on the BILLCS Top 30 to date out of his four charted entries. Little did I know until recently that he co-wrote Lady Gaga’s “Applause”, one of my Gaga faves which got to #2 as well, and he has worked closely with artists like DJ Snake, Cerrone, Tchami and Malaa, sometimes in the background as an engineer. And Mercer is one of a few contemporary producers who does disco proud. His latest release “Disco Sermon featuring Ron Carroll” is no exception, as he partners once again with the Chicago house notable (their first collaboration was 2018’s “Satisfy”, which samples Don Ray’s disco hit “Got To Have Loving”, and is one of those BILLCS Top 30 #1’s). And what better to preach the word of disco than the expressive voice of Ron Carroll? This “Disco Sermon” will unite club goers on the dance floor, for the power and presence of the 70’s most enjoyable music genre is very much alive, it never really went anywhere except back underground while other sub-genres which couldn’t have existed without it (house, trance, etc.) rose to the fore. “Disco Sermon” is a lot of fun, and any club DJ who appreciates the history of dance music and the impact of disco should be playing it.

Andrew Bayer, Oliver Smith, "Rude Boyz"

ANDREW BAYER, OLIVER SMITH, “Rude Boyz”

Two Anjunabeats headliners, Grammy-nominated Washington DC native Andrew Bayer and the UK’s Oliver Smith (the first artist signed to the label), combine forces with the fun trance-flavoured bop “Rude Boyz”. It’s essentially an instrumental, with some vocals used as effects, and it plays on some familiar trance sounds and effects, but then tosses in arpeggios and some cool drops to really diversify the mix. Having been to see an Anjunabeats show before (which included Oliver), I’m certain that “Rude Boyz” would be an in-demand crowd-pleasing highlight when played in a set by Andrew or Oliver. Its euphoric melody will keep the audience raging and bouncing, so it deserves to be a centrepiece of a set.

Eyeglasses, "Beautiful Things"

EYEGLASSES, “Beautiful Things”

It’s hard to listen to covers of one of your favourite songs, knowing that none is likely to match it. But this cello instrumental take on Benson Boone’s massive “Beautiful Things” (a BILLCS Top 30 #1) manages to stand on its own. Eyeglasses is the performing name for Iain S. Forrest, who is a medical student in New York City and plays free performances in subways and throughout NYC. He’s received notice on social media and TV for his performances, and sadly last year, he was attacked in a subway by a deranged person and was struck on the head with a big object. While it took him some time to recover, particularly psychologically, from the incident, Iain is back performing in public. His arrangement of “Beautiful Things” is stunning and captivating, his cello sings on its own, so be sure to check it out. He’s also begun releasing vocal originals like “Tomorrow’s Dawn” which you can listen to at the following Spotify link: Eyeglasses.

Grabbitz, "In The Dark"

GRABBITZ, “In The Dark”

Acclaimed electronic artist Grabbitz continues to dazzle with songs like the title track from his 3-song EP In The Dark. The L.A.-based, Buffalo, New York singer, songwriter and producer offers a creative mix of progressive electronica and dubstep in this compelling track. The production is highly layered and brings some surprises, like a short spoken word interlude. With taking some risks in the production, “In The Dark” stands apart from a lot of same-sounding progressive electronic dance music. Its theme of self-isolation could prompt a discussion about mental health and the need for some people to be alone at certain times, which often leads others to worry rather needlessly instead of trying to understand the big picture. To the special attention of producers/remixers, he has also placed the stems for his songs on his website for your use. Website link:  Grabbitz.com. The website also includes a digital booklet containing the lyrics to the three songs on his EP.

Nathan Ball, "Stateside"

NATHAN BALL, “Stateline”

House music fans know Cornwall, England-based talent Nathan Ball as the current touring vocalist for the seminal dance band Faithless, who frequently tour in the UK, Europe and Australia. In fact, Faithless reached #1 on the BILLCS Top 30 with the mesmerizing “Synthesizer” in 2021, which featured Nathan on lead vocals. But with “Stateline”, Nathan steps back into a grounded indie singer/songwriter pop/folk mode in refreshing song about being young, dreaming, and in love, only to reach that stage that eventually happens to us all when reality bites. It’s hard not to like a song like this with an earnest vocal which would appeal to fans of Niall Horan and Ed Sheeran. While it’s great to hear Nathan as part of the ongoing Faithless clan, it’s also cool to see him creating a parallel identity which could serve him well long after his time in Faithless comes to an end.
