#BILLCSTop30 #681 – December 18/23

It’s hard to believe in some ways that this is my last chart of 2023! Music now travels into our grasp at superspeed, and it’s hard to push pause long enough to enjoy the songs before the next sensation comes along. Towards the end of next week, I’ll begin publishing my Top 93 of 2023 and I’ll also be working on the accompanying radio program for the Top 30 of the year. Despite what I just said, for some reason there wasn’t a lot of turnover on the chart this year, and no song reached below #19.  I’ll continue to honour my rule that songs can remain on the chart for up to 10 appearances (20 weeks), which only 10 songs achieved this year 😮

Here’s the link to the online version of the chart:  BILLCS Top 30

Here’s the link to my Spotify playlist of the chart:  BILLCS Top 30 Chart Playlist

Check out my ONLINE RADIO SHOWS below as they are increasingly tied in with this blog.  As most of you know, I host 3 online radio shows – The Big 20 and two iterations of Your Weekend New Music Mix – and produce 2 online radio segments – my new music and retro picks of the week – that are all pre-recorded.

A couple of songs charge up the new chart, while we have four hopefuls arriving just in time for the new year. As well, a singer becomes the oldest living person to appear on this chart through a rebooted version of one of his minor chart records.

Bright Light Bright Light, "Down To One"

In the meantime, Bright Light Bright Light continues to rule the chart with the irresistible “Down To One”, in the same way that he did exactly 10 years ago with the always stunning “An Open Heart”.

Jack Harlow, "Lovin on Me"

One of those songs that makes short work of the chart actually soars 25-3 as the Fastest Riser, and that’s Jack Harlow’s insanely catchy and quick “Lovin On Me”, a number one both in the US and the UK, and in the Top 10 at Top 40 radio now. This isn’t the usual for me but I enjoy how playful and droll it is, and Jack’s delivery and flow are so smooth.  A number one contender for the first chart of ’24? You betcha!! Jack also appears at #12 with Jung Kook on their collaboration “3D”.

John Dahlback, Davis Mallory, "Top of the World"

“Top of the World” is one of many immensely infectious house tracks to grace the chart this year, brought to you by Swedish producer John Dahlbäck and Nashville-based vocalist/songwriter Davis Mallory, and climbs 5-4. Even better to make it this high on the chart, the song’s an independent release, like 40% of other songs on the chart.

Pete Cho, "Fan of You"

Also a stalwart indie release with a great story angle is “Fan Of You” by Chicago producer Pete Cho, which climbs 7-5.

Gt_ofice, ALWZ SNNY, Robbie Rosen, "Feels Like Us"

Miami producer Gt_ofice has two songs in the Top 10 this week. “Feels Like Us” (above), with fellow producer ALWZ SNNY and singer/songwriter Robbie Rosen, is a national dance radio Top 40 hit and leaps 12-6 over his other track “Can’t Deny” (with JAYEM and Alix Robson, below), which is up 9-8. “Feels Like Us” is Robbie’s 8th Top 10 entry.

GT_Ofice, JAYEM, Alix Robson, "Can't Deny"

Martin Garrix, Lloyiso, "Real Love"

Martin Garrix and Lloyiso move up 11-7 with their dance radio #1 “Real Love”, becoming Martin’s 10th Top 10 entry overall.

Audien, "Superhero"

Electronic dance producer Audien gets a personal best on the chart as “Superhero” rises 13-9.

WH0, "Rock The Party"

The other huge move on the chart belongs to British dance producers WH0, as “Rock The Party” has arrived at exactly the right part of the year to become a dance club favourite. It zips up the chart 28-10, just as WH0’s other track on the chart, the former #1 “What You Need” with Steve Angello, departs the Top 10. If you heard my New Music Pick of the Week segment last week, you found out that WH0 are now unmasked as Rob Chetcuti (who has been producing songs under a myriad of aliases) and Tom Cross.

Moonwood, "Curfew"

Just outside of the Top 10 is Australian rockers Moonwood, who keep getting better and better with each release. “Curfew” climbs 16-11 and comes from their very good EP Curfew Hours.

Benson Boone, "To Love Someone"

If you follow Benson Boone’s socials, you may think like me that he has yet another big ballad on the way. I personally can’t get enough of them, and his latest release “To Love Someone” moves up 20-15.

Cobi, "Where We Belong"

L.A.-based singer/songwriter Cobi is off to a great start with a bluesy rock ballad from his recent EP Sugar Man called “Where We Belong”, which climbs 27-21.

Nero, "Truth"

Leading off the debuts is Veteran British progressive electronic trio Nero, who are back with their first new music in five years with the huge and bold “Truth”, which is the Highest Debut at #26. It’s their first appearance on this chart.

Todd Terry, Gene Chandler, "What You Do"

Next at #27 is the highly influential house music master Todd Terry with “What You Do” at #27. This song co-bills veteran pop/R&B singer Gene Chandler, age 86, who is best known for his 1962 #1 smash “Duke of Earl” as it transforms a minor single by Gene from 1966 called “You Can’t Hurt Me No More”. Gene becomes the oldest living person to appear on this chart. And Todd was on the chart five years ago exactly with his future #1 with A-Trak, “DJ’s Just Gotta Dance”.

Great Good Fine OK, "Blame"

At #28 marks the third appearance on the chart and first since 2015 for NYC duo Great Good Fine OK with “Blame”. GGFO is back in fine form with their brand of soulful dance/pop led by an exceptional Jon Sandler vocal.

Showtek, Sonny Wilson, "Shine"

Rounding out the debuts at #29 is veteran Dutch dance production duo (and brothers) Showtek with fellow Dutch denizens Sonny Wilson (a duo led by the same-named singer) and “Shine”, from Showtek’s recent album 360 Yellow. This is a bright, anthemic house track that stands apart from the rest on the album. It’s Showtek’s fifth appearance on the chart, which goes back almost 10 years exactly with their future #1 “Cannonball (Earthquake)” (with Justin Prime and Matthew Koma).

As the music business winds down for the rest of the year, my regular blog posts will also be wrapping up next week, but will be followed by my Top 93 of 2023 and a concurrent Top 30 of 2023 radio special, which will air on select online radio stations. More about that to follow in the coming weeks! In the meantime, among my six selections this week in the Report, there are two new Christmas songs for your holiday playlists and celebrations.

Among the features in the Report, you can check out my pick of the week, along with one from the host of online radio’s “Top 40 Timeline”, “Big Daddy” Russ Horton, plus “Modern Hype” online radio host Hunter Wilbur’s “Bop of the Week”. “The Musicman” James Rogers from online radio’s “3D Variety Show” has his Classic Five pop hits which focus on harder and more progressive well-known songs from the 70’s. And you’ll also find out what songs were in the Top 5 of the BILLCS Top 30, 5-10-15-20 years ago!

The BILLCS New Music Report is always a work-in-progress and I welcome your suggestions so feel free to contact me at through my social media links right here.

Cobi, "Sugar Man"

COBI, “Sugar Man”

L.A.-based singer, songwriter and producer Cobi is back with a new EP, from which comes the title track “Sugar Man”. He’s one of my most written-about performers this year because of the ongoing development of his own sound, as well as the sheer quality of his indie releases. It’s a bluesy guitar-laden, well-sung rocker shrouded in mystery about a benefactor called Sugar Man who doesn’t come through to follow up and help when it’s needed. The EP also features five tracks, two about which I’ve written, the ballad “Where We Belong” (currently charting on the BILLCS Top 30) and “Good Morning”. You can hear from all of the songs in the EP how invested Cobi is in his music, and your time spent with them will be rewarded with some new favourites.

The Knocks, Sofi Tukker, "One on One"

THE KNOCKS, SOFI TUKKER, “One on One”

In the free-flowing world of dance music, performers can almost always return to their home base of collaborators, and thus we have the first collaboration in a few years from NYC production duo The Knocks and their one time protégés, Sofi Tukker (who I saw together in concert in 2016). “One on One” is classic house music with a heavy old school disco groove that could have easily fit on The Knocks’ album 55 (and that 2015-16 era will make its comeback, mark my words!). Sophie Hawley-Weld’s vocal has only gotten more assured over the years, as was clearly evident on 2022’s WET TENNIS album, and the production has a lot of nice robust layers that enhance how polished the song sounds overall. The Knocks and Sofi Tukker are all so good at their craft  and “One on One” just makes it sounds easy, which should generate immediate appeal for both clubs and dance radio airplay.

Benjamin Russell, Rob Stuart, "Driving Hollow"

BENJAMIN RUSSELL, ROB STUART, “Driving Hollow”

Toronto-based producer/songwriter Rob Stuart and Montreal producer/singer/songwriter Benjamin Russell have made the most of 2023 releasing several projects, and their new four song EP Brighter Light follows up their earlier collaboration, Something in F Minor. I was drawn to “Driving Hollow” and its big, bass-filled, progressive electronic sound, reminiscent of work by Peter Gabriel (“Sledgehammer” and “Digging in the Dirt”) and Mike Oldfield (“Five Miles Out”). The story in “Driving Hollow”, as sung vividly by Benjamin, seems to be in a futuristic sci-fi setting, where something foreboding is in store for us if we don’t watch how we’re driving, as we’re told in cryptic electronic messages by what might be a “Nineteen Eighty-Four”-like government official. It’s an absorbing if unresolved listen that uses driving as a metaphor for how we navigate relationships.

Eric Rivero, PuFFcorn, Robbie Rosen, "Lost In Love"

ERIC RIVERO, PuFFcorn, ROBBIE ROSEN, “Lost In Love”

“Lost In Love” is an early 2010’s throwback to the big room house sound of the day, reminiscent of early work by the likes of Alesso, Hardwell and Deadmau5. It’s brought to you by Chicago-born producer Eric Rivero, Taiwanese producer PuFFcorn, along with the prolific NYC singer/songwriter Robbie Rosen, currently riding up the BILLCS Top 30 with “Feels Like Us” (which is also Hunter Wilbur’s Bop of the Week, see below). It’s great to hear Robbie in this kind of a throwback setting, and the producers have created a tight, textbook flow for the song, whose euphoric melody, hand-in-hand with the positive theme of the lyrics, will keep listeners smiling and club goers dancing.

I don’t usually write about Christmas music, but you can feel free to add these two new ones to your favourite Christmas playlist.

Max Ehrich, Thad Beaty, "All I Want Is You" (Big Sky remix)

MAX EHRICH, THAD BEATY, “All I Want Is You” (Big Sky  remix)

A while back, I wrote about the recent affable hip hop/pop single by singer, actor and dancer Max Ehrich called “Backroads”. Although noted for his work years ago in TV soap opera “The Young & The Restless”, Max completed two film projects lately, “Southern Gospel” and for TV,  “A Cowboy Christmas Romance”. “All I Want Is You” is the feature song for the latter film and veers away from the trendier sound of “Backroads” in favour of a country-flavoured, mostly acoustic ballad that this time shows off the natural timbre in Max’s affecting vocal. It’s a straight-forward, well-written song supported by veteran Nashville guitarist, producer and hitmaker Thad Beaty, who has worked mostly with Sugarland over the years but has appeared on stage with numerous A list stars.

Nathalie Miranda, "Bring My Baby Back"

NATHALIE MIRANDA, “Bring My Baby Back”

The absence of a loved one over the holidays, for one reason or another, can often be a let down, and Nathalie Miranda’s energetic plea to Santa Claus, “Bring My Baby Back”, is a breezy and uplifting request. A diminutive presence with a voice that packs a wallop, Nathalie hails from the UK and is of Greek Cypriot heritage. Her vocal in “Bring My Baby Back” reminds me of versatile 80’s performers Melissa Manchester or Vonda Shepard, and she has also recorded in Spanish (check out her recent single “Terremoto”). In the end we all hope our wishes like in “Bring My Baby Back” get granted which would make it a Merry Christmas indeed.

BILLCS New Music Report – December 6/23 spotlighting new releases by @Showtek & #SonnyWilson, @djToddTerry & #GeneChandler, @Kungsmusic & @Shadow_Child, @Matomaofficial & @JPCoopermusic, @obeyANTAGONIZER, @DenizKoyumusic, @TheMovingStills and @BlackHertz_ & _HOZHO_

The music business typically winds down at this time of year for a few weeks, with charts being awash in holiday music. While on occasion a major artist drops a big record in December, the rest of the industry perks along with plenty of new releases to check out. This week there’s house music, progressive electronica, and indie rock among the reviews, while picks of the week comprise a rock ballad, a cover of a Canadian classic, and an acoustic folk track. So there’s lots of variety – open your ears and dive in!

Among the features in the Report, you can check out my pick of the week, along with one from the host of online radio’s “Top 40 Timeline”, “Big Daddy” Russ Horton, plus “Modern Hype” online radio host Hunter Wilbur’s “Bop of the Week”. “The Musicman” James Rogers from online radio’s “3D Variety Show” has his Classic Five pop hits featuring songs from the 1980’s. And in case you missed them on Monday, you’ll find out what are my #1 song and the Fastest Riser in the latest edition of the BILLCS Top 30.

The BILLCS New Music Report is always a work-in-progress and I welcome your suggestions so feel free to contact me at through my social media links right here.

Showtek, Sonny Wilson, "Shine"

SHOWTEK, SONNY WILSON, “Shine”

Veteran Dutch producers Showtek finish out 2023 with the slick house track, “Shine”, which reunites them with Dutch duo Sonny Wilson, from their album 360 Yellow. It’s same-named singer Sonny whose amiable, R&B-flavoured vocal gives “Shine” the positive, anthemic lift that it needs to stand out in a club or festival set. Showtek have two sides to their persona which work well – the fun, party-loving brothers who sometimes offer us a striking dance novelty, and then the more serious producers who know their craft that has been honed after than 20 years, ultimately breaking out around 2009 worldwide. Now Las Vegas draws, Showtek have accumulated a wide repertoire and “Shine” is another astute addition to it.

Todd Terry, Gene Chandler, "What You Do"

TODD TERRY, GENE CHANDLER, “What You Do”

The master of house himself, Todd Terry, continues to be extremely prolific, but still crafts songs that allow for instantaneous reaction, like “What You Do”. Featuring the classic R&B voice of the Duke of Earl himself, Chicago native Gene Chandler, it retools one of Gene’s minor releases, a 1965 track called “You Can’t Hurt Me No More”, bringing its essence to an entirely brand new audience for their dancing pleasure. “What You Do” is an imaginative, concise release that shows that few producers can match the 30+ years of skills and experience that Todd Terry continues to bring to the dance music scene.

Kungs, Shadow Child, "Changes"

KUNGS, SHADOW CHILD, “Changes”

“Changes” is a vibrant collaboration between French dance producer Kungs (who latterly reached #8 on the BILLCS Top 30 with Purple Disco Machine on “Substitution”) and British house producer Shadow Child. It’s their take on a classic 2002 house song of the same name by Sandy Rivera, which it samples, and rides heavily on a catchy synth hook that will give club goers a workout. “Changes” is for totally letting yourself go when you want to groove to some inspiring early 2000’s-flavoured house music.

Matoma, J.P. Cooper, "Sound of Shadows"

MATOMA, J.P. COOPER, “Sound of Shadows”

With the release of his first album in five years, Love For A Beat, Norway’s Matoma has come off of one of the best years in music in his career, with fantastic songs like “Won’t Follow You Home” (with James Droll, a BILLCS Top 30 #1) and “The Power” (with an uncredited Clementine Douglas, which reached #3 on the BILLCS Top 30) included in the release. But he didn’t give away the store entirely, saving a few tracks for the album’s release, including the potent “Sound of Shadows”, reuniting him with singer/songwriter J.P. Cooper, who you also know from many European and dance music hits with people like Astrid S and Craig David, as well as his own solo Top 10 UK releases like “September Song” plus Jonas Blue’s #2 UK smash “Perfect Strangers”.  J.P.’s gritty and soulful vocal is a perfect companion to the urgency of being alone in “Sound of Shadows”, and its chorus of “now you’re gone” will stay in your head for days. Matoma is now back in full dance music mode and the diverse selection in Love For A Beat works beautifully.

ANTAGONIZER, "Bow Down"

ANTAGONÏZER [AWAY and Crywolf], “Bow Down”

ANTAGONÏZER is a collaboration between two L.A.-based unique talents in the progressive electronic world, AWAY (Dan Alm) and Crywolf (Justin Taylor Phillips). Of the two, I’m only familiar with Crywolf, having seen him in concert years ago for an intense and memorable set, but the music of ANTAGONÏZER on their EP Omniviolence is best pitched to fans of artists like Nine Inch Nails, Front 242, NERO, and early DeadMau5. It’s not entirely my go-to style of music, but I appreciate the EP which is rich with variety and synthesizer wizardry, and “Bow Down” for me is the most memorable track with its foreboding, dark sound. ANTAGONÏZER is certainly a partnership worth repeating.

Deniz Koyu, "Astral"

DENIZ KOYU, “Astral”

Deniz Koyu has been a mainstay on the European dance music scene for over a decade, playing every major festival there and collaborating with the likes of Alesso, Gryffin, Nicky Romero, and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike. His crazy-infectious, propulsive deep house track “Goin’ Down” (with Twoloud) got my attention back in 2015 and became a BILLCS Top 30 #1. As you might have gathered from its title, “Astral” is a spacy but highly danceable instrumental that one could visualize being played at a festival under the stars to magical effect. Just when you think “Astral” is coming to an end, it rebuilds 2/3 of the way through with one of those ‘you gotta wait for it’ breaks. “Astral” is great, imaginative, 90’s techno-inspired fun (I keep thinking of the Chemical Brothers’ early work) that will appeal to club goers as much as it will to progressive electronic listeners, and help spread his recent work to a wider international audience.

The Moving Stills, "Westside"

THE MOVING STILLS, “Westside”

Australia seems to be a current incubator for indie rock talent, and judging by the calibre of fresh music from Oz this year, it shouldn’t take long for it to spread to the rest of the world. The Moving Stills hail from the central area of New South Wales, a quartet which has released its first album called Wabi Sabi. The group aims for an authentic, friendly sound, and “Westside” is a perfect example of what they are achieving. It’s a song about being on the road, which is exactly where they are heading again in January and February, touring the east coast of Australia. Vocals and instrumentation are all on point, and if you’ve enjoyed the songs of other Aussie indie rock artists this year, then the music of The Moving Stills is just the ticket.

Black Hertz, HOZHO, "Ego"

BLACK HERTZ, HOZHO, “Ego”

Brazilian electronic producer Black Hertz and Portuguese producer HOZHO have combined forces for their three song EP Psyche. It’s a largely progressive electronic instrumental effort that’s meant to be an immersive and personal experience into your own psyche, with songs titled “ID”, “Ego” and “Superego”. “Ego” impressive as the song builds from a vibrant instrumental, adding vocals and some nifty effects to create a track that will stick under your skin after it’s over. The rest of the EP isn’t as well-suited for the more casual listener and requires your full attention, but if progressive electronic music is your thing and you’re looking for something a little different to explore, then the full Psyche EP is for you.

#BILLCSTop30 #680 – December 4/23

I’ll have one more bi-weekly BILLCS Top 30 in two weeks, which will also be the last chart of 2023 for me. I’ll also be working on my year end list and a pre-recorded online radio show to accompany it, so watch your socials for more details about that. If you’re curious, you can find previous year end lists from 2009-2022 on the following link to my Google sheet.

Bright Light Bright Light, "Down To One"

With his strongest song in recent years, frequent chart visitor Bright Light Bright Light notches up a record seventh #1 “Down To One” moves 3-1. Coincidentally, Bright Light Bright Light was #1 exactly 10 years ago with the magnificent “An Open Heart”, which was his fourth chart-topper. “Down To One” will be a part of his fifth album, likely coming next year.

Michael Medrano, "Disco Sleaze (Raw and Uncut)"

Michael Medrano follows “Down To One” 4-2 with “Disco Sleaze” in its “raw and uncut” mix, which is just so much fun and has the 70’s disco spirit embedded in its groove.

Felix Cartal, Karen Harding, "Need Your Love"

Felix Cartal and Karen Harding move up 5-4 with “Need Your Love”, which becomes a personal best for Felix on the chart and matches the peak of Karen’s earlier chart entry this year with Armand Van Helden, “Wings (I Won’t Let You Down)”.

Pete Cho, "Fan of You"

Chicago producer Pete Cho’s “Fan Of You” breaks into the Top 10 and makes a nice 12-7 jump.

GT_Ofice, JAYEM, Alix Robson, "Can't Deny"

Miami producer Gt_ofice gets his first Top 10 entry with “Can’t Deny” (above), which features NYC producer JAYEM and British vocalist/songwriter Alix Robson, and climbs 11-9. Coming up quickly not far behind is Gt_ofice’s second entry, the Top 40 national radio hit “Feels Like Us” (18-12, below) in collaboration with ALWZ SNNY and vocalist/songwriter Robbie Rosen.

Gt_ofice, ALWZ SNNY, Robbie Rosen, "Feels Like Us"

Audien, "Superhero"

Dance club and festival favourite Audien looks to grab his second Top 10 entry following this year’s “Antidote” (which peaked at #10) with “Superhero”, which soars 20-13.

Moonwood, "Curfew"

Australia-based rock quintet Moonwood also make a sharp upward move with “Curfew” (22-16) from their top notch EP Curfew Hours.

Benson Boone, "To Love Someone"

The Fastest Riser on the chart is “To Love Someone” by Benson Boone, who is getting a great rep as a contemporary balladeer, though he can rock out just fine thank you too.  The song leaps 28-20.

MELØ, "Memento"

The last chart’s two very different remaining debuts are also off to fine starts. Windsor, Ontario performer MELØ climbs 29-23 with the poignant new wave-influenced rock track “Memento” (above), while NYC producer Lohrasp Kansara’s sparkling cover of ALY-US’ 90’s house staple “Follow Me” (below), featuring a potent vocal by Norman Alexander, rises 30-24.

Lohrasp Kansara, Norman Alexander, "Follow Me"

Jack Harlow, "Lovin on Me"

Leading off three debuts, in a surprising arrival at least to me, is Jack Harlow’s UK #1 “Lovin on Me”, which bows at #25. It also joins his collaboration with BTS’ Jung Kook on the chart, “3D”, which rises 17-14. I’m not a huge fan of hip hop but Jack’s tracks are usually quite likeable, and I’m enjoying both the flow and humour in “Lovin on Me”, which reminds me of late 90’s hip hop artist Mase. The vocal hook in “Lovin on Me” is sped up slightly and sampled from the 90’s release by Cadillac Dale called “Whatever (Bass Solique)”.

Cobi, "Where We Belong"

Next at #27 coincides with the arrival of a new EP. L.A.-based, Minnesota-born Cobi returns to the chart for the second time this year with “Where We Belong”, which follows the #5 “Telepathic Powers” as kind of a similar companion piece. Cobi’s new five song EP is called Sugar Man and includes “Where We Belong”.

WH0, "Rock The Party"

The third debut belongs to British masked dance producers WH0 with “Rock The Party” at #28. It joins “What You Need” (with Steve Angello), which departs #1 after two appearances at the top (four weeks). “Rock The Party” will certainly do that, with prominent samples of Todd Terry’s 80’s house classic “Weekend” and The Clash’s “Rock The Casbah”.

BILLCS New Music Report – November 29/23 spotlighting new songs by @iamtheElephante & @AmberLiu, @GreatGoodFineOK, @YoungBombs & @Linney, Ben Ellis, @OOKAY, @GRAYthebandd and Busking Around

It’s like old home week circa 2016 here at the BILLCS New Music Report. Some frequent visitors to the blog who I haven’t written about in a while have dropped some of the best new music of the week, and I’m pleased to feature it all for you.

Among the features in the Report, you can check out my pick of the week, along with one from the host of online radio’s “Top 40 Timeline”, “Big Daddy” Russ Horton, plus “Modern Hype” online radio host Hunter Wilbur’s “Bop of the Week”. “The Musicman” James Rogers from online radio’s “3D Variety Show” has his Classic Five pop hits, in a throwback this week to 1970. And you’ll also find out what was #1 on the BILLCS Top 30 in each of the last 25 years. From Chris Isaak to Conan Gray, they’re all here!

The BILLCS New Music Report is always a work-in-progress and I welcome your suggestions so feel free to contact me at through my social media links right here.

Elephante, Amber Liu, "Leave The Ground"

ELEPHANTE, AMBER LIU, “Leave The Ground”

It’s been a while since I’ve written about Elephante (aka Tim Wu), the Southern California producer and musician who has released numerous fine singles and two albums over the best part of the last decade. It also turns out his song “Plans” (with Brandyn Burnette) was #2 on the BILLCS Top 30 exactly 7 years ago too! And while it’s not the first time he’s recorded an electronic ballad, I believe it’s his first male-female ballad duet. His natural voice blends nicely with Amber Liu’s vocal on “Leave the Ground”. The production is top notch with a classic song structure that rises and falls gracefully but not before leaving a lump in your throat with its story. It captures those moments where the memories of a past lover are slipping away, even though you may not want them to. The imagery is vivid, one of my favourite songs that Elephante has written to date. I’ve said recently that electronic ballads are really not in vogue right now, but the ones that I’ve written about like “Leave the Ground” in the past month or so are exemplary cases for the trend to be reversed heading into 2024.

Great Good Fine OK, "Blame"

GREAT GOOD FINE OK, “Blame”

I’ve been enjoying the music of NYC duo Great Good Fine OK for the best part of the last decade. The guys (vocalist Jon Sandler and keyboardist extraordinaire Luke Moelmann) have been nothing but consistent but “Blame”, their latest release, particularly shines. The melody sparkles, and “Blame” gives Jon the opportunity once again to really let his voice soar. The songwriting is especially strong. “Blame” contemplates when there’s a problem in a personal situation, but you decide to accept you’re at fault, even when you’re not. You then realize later that things aren’t quite the same and you might be caught up in the blame game to make the relationship work. “Blame” is top notch, danceable, R&B-soaked pop that you’ll keep on repeat.

Young Bombs, Linney, "Strangers" (chill mix)

YOUNG BOMBS, LINNEY, “Strangers” (Chill mix)

British Columbia-based dance producers Young Bombs have been crossing over back and forth from club-oriented tracks to Canadian Top 40 radio hits for the past few years, and the original mix of “Strangers” is clearly better suited for clubs than radio. However, pop and dance music radio could easily embrace this alternate “chill” take on “Strangers”, which shows how well-suited the song is to a friendlier dance/pop mix. It also shows off better the familiar voice of singer/songwriter Linney, who has graced numerous dance music releases this year such as those with Manila Killa, Nicky Romero & TELYKast and Christina Novielli. I’m always one to recommend to dance music artists that if you feel a song can be remixed to attract more listeners, then do it if feasible. Fortunately Young Bombs have the well-honed skills and means to do this, and this version of “Strangers” is a step in the right direction.

Ben Ellis, "Guys That Look Like Me"

BEN ELLIS, “Guys That Look Like Me”

Welsh singer/songwriter Ben Ellis has scored major points with me for creating amiable, good-natured songs with clever lyrics and sharp melodies. “Ed’s House” got to #8 on the BILLCS Top 30 earlier this year and “Guys That Look Like Me” has the same kind of nuts and bolts which make for a refreshing listen. Besides Ben’s charming, lilting vocal, “Guys” is a story about being stereotyped for the way one looks, and not being able to date the object of his affection because of it. And while the protagonist pines away about her, you’re wondering if it’s all worth it when she can’t see past the surface. Yet such is being young and with a crush that you can’t get over right away. It’s all highly relatable and Ben’s vantage point is unique, giving “Guys That Look Like Me” inspired depth underneath its bright pop exterior.

Alex Sampson, "Blind"

ALEX SAMPSON, “Blind”

New Canadian talent Alex Sampson is on a roll with his recent singles. “Blind” follows up “‘Til The World Gets Sick of Us” and “WANT YOU!” (which reached #16 on the BILLCS Top 30), all filled with a variety of anthemic energy that goes hand in hand with urgent emotions. “Blind” is more moody than the previous releases, but also shows off Alex’s range in the softer parts of the song, which means that he can sing and co-write a solid bop but be convincing too when the lyrics of the song get real.

OOKAY, "Mach 10"

OOKAY, “Mach 10”

Techno influences have made a big comeback in electronic music within the last year or so, and L.A. based dance producer Ookay maximizes their effect in the hyper-energetic instrumental track “Mach 10”. It’s got a herky-jerky, 90’s-flavoured rhythm with some 80’s British house elements as well. With “Mach 10”, Ookay (aka Abraham Laguna) keeps his Dim Mak label association flourishing, setting out to create a busy few minutes on the dance floor for you, and it delivers big time. Club DJ’s wanting to increase the intensity on the dance floor need only to drop “Mach 10” into a set and watch the crowd react.

GRAYtheband, "Unabashed and Hardy"

GRAYtheband, “Unabashed and Hardy”

“Unabashed and Hardy” is a track from the debut album by Edmonton’s GRAYtheband, with whom I’ve familiarized you with previous singles “All Done” (also the album title) and “‘Bit Late”.  GRAYtheband is a collective of a variety of artists using pop, R&B and hip hop styles, with the focal being vocalist/songwriter Gray Ford. We’ve heard Gray’s voice really soar in “All Done”, but in “Unabashed and Hardy” he uses a staccato kind of R&B singing style that doesn’t quite sound like anything else out there. I’m sure that’s not an easy vocal style to develop – such as with ‘scat’ singing – but Gray makes it sound easy, which makes the song an intriguing spin. Be sure to check out the entire All Done album for a stimulating listen that goes down easy, by an artist we’ll look forward to hearing more of in 2024.

Busking Around, "Guilt Free"

BUSKING AROUND, “Guilt Free”

Busking Around (aka Eric Kendall) is a Detroit-area musician who has been performing for many years, but has only been releasing his own music for the last two years. “Guilt Free” is a bluesy bop of sorts that features Eric’s cello as the instrument of focus, which is something you won’t hear often on a pop release these days. The best way to convey what Busking Around is trying to achieve here are in his words:

” This song began as an exploration into the 2nd Line beats of New Orleans. The traditional wind and horns were replaced with a funkified cello arrangement, which laid a clear foundation on which the vocals could thrive. The result invokes that feeling of release in those rare moments when we can hit the pause button on our responsibilities.”

“Guilt Free” is one of those tracks that is probably best experienced live in concert in a small club setting. It’s a fun track with a personable, gritty vocal, and I would pitch it to fans of alternative R&B and blues-flavoured rock.

BILLCS New Music Report – November 22/23 with new songs by Earthquake Lights @EQLightsBand, @TheStickmenProj & #ALTEGO, @Helloworldbeats, Talking All Night @TalkingAN, JENNA Nation, @WaitingForSmith, The James Clark Institute @theJCI and @SerenaIttoo

It may have happened before after I started the BILLCS New Music Report blog format about a year ago, but I want to point out that this week, all of the releases that I’ve reviewed are independents. Although I do write about some major label releases, they are usually by new and rising performers, and not established ones. I know that if I wrote about Taylor Swift and Drake, the views on my blog would go up. But I prefer to continue to highlight independents where I can, I guess something else that was ingrained in me in my college radio days that has stuck with me all my life. So it’s important that you check out these songs to find out if maybe one of them becomes a new favourite!

Among the features in the Report, you can check out my pick of the week, along with one from the host of online radio’s “Top 40 Timeline”, “Big Daddy” Russ Horton, plus “Modern Hype” online radio host Hunter Wilbur’s “Bop of the Week”. “The Musicman” James Rogers from online radio’s “3D Variety Show” has his Classic Five pop hits, which reacquaints you with some favourites from the 70’s and 80’s. And in case you missed them, you’ll find out what were my #1 song and the Fastest Riser on the BILLCS Top 30 this week.

As you may have noticed, I’ve decided to no longer use the words “Spotlighting” or “Featuring” because in truth all of the songs are worth checking out, or else I wouldn’t be writing about them!

The BILLCS New Music Report is always a work-in-progress and I welcome your suggestions so feel free to contact me at through my social media links right here.

Earthquake Lights, "Silhouette"

EARTHQUAKE LIGHTS, “Silhouette”

NYC’s Earthquake Lights follow up their second album Desert Bloom with the immensely enjoyable “Silhouette”. While the band classifies itself as a rock band, “Silhouette” is a lush and fresh release that meshes together a myriad of influences, including Radiohead, Pink Floyd and David Bowie. Vocalist Myles Rodenhouse has a crystalline pop tone which sounds like none of those artists and leads the song’s story about the search for life, whatever that may be to the individual listener. While the song’s title visualizes images of people and things against objects through moderate lighting, the fluid melody, helped by the sounds of strings (whether real or synthetic), strikes you like a warm beam of yellow light. You don’t have to think too hard to get a lot of listening pleasure from “Silhouette”. As a collective, Earthquake Lights have unlocked something special here that needs to be pursued further!

The Stickmen Project, ALTEGO, "Fiesta"

THE STICKMEN PROJECT, ALTÉGO, “Fiesta”

“Fiesta” is aimed at nothing more than having a great time. So just let it all go and make your own private party with The Stickmen Project and ALTÉGO in their first collaboration. Those who follow the visual social media apps will already know The Stickmen Project, a British duo of producer/DJ’s who perform in outfits designed with LED lights to make them appear as stickmen. Their energy is further fused together in this Latin-flavoured track by ALTÉGO, those wacky, friendly British twins and producers/DJ’s Lucas and Michael Fernandes-Pendse who follow up their recent infectious release “Bling Bling”.  “Fiesta” is quick and snappy and sure to lift you up, so just put everything on pause and have fun!

Helloworld, "need that"

HELLOWORLD, “need that”

Following up his collaboration with fellow electronic producer Throttle called “Weightless Feeling” (currently rising up the BILLCS Top 30), L.A.’s Helloworld has released “need that”, a song that spares no amount of vitriol in unleashing emotions after a nasty break-up. And while the tone of the song is brusque, setting it to an aggressive arrangement and potent synth beats is just the kind of catharsis electronic music fans might end up feeling. “need that” draws you in and before you know it you end up being engrossed in the story and the creative production.

Talking All Night, "Treasure"

TALKING ALL NIGHT, “Treasure”

Talking All Night is an Indonesia-based duo of vocalist Advan Putra and multi-instrumentalist George Alexandrov whose latest release, “Treasure” (from the new album Miles Away from You) positively sparkles with its engaging and tight production. You’ll hear not only bright synths, but live instruments such as saxophone and pan flute, set to warm and genuine lyrics by the duo. “Treasure” is a splendid introduction to Talking All Night, whose influences span the 80’s and 90’s – you’ll certainly hear the pop style of Toto for musicianship and production quality, and perhaps others like Vince Clarke (Erasure/Depeche Mode) and Simple Minds for diverse synth sounds and expertise.

JENNA Nation, "All I Need"

JENNA Nation, “All I Need”

Berklee-educated JENNA Nation has an R&B-influenced pop hit in the making with “All I Need”. Hailing from Ottawa, JENNA has been performing shows since age 9, and ended up recording with some of the best production talent in the biz at Matthew Knowles’ Music World studios, which resulted in her debut album You Don’t Know. She has even performed publicly for Canada’s Prime Minister. Five years after her album, which saw her opening for the likes of Shawn Mendes in concert, JENNA started releasing music again. A few singles later, “All I Need” is accompanied by a polished arrangement, and its silky smooth pop draws her main inspiration from jazz and R&B. Her pristine voice is reminiscent of Alicia Keys and SWV, and the song moves along gently but with Mariah Carey and Ariana Grande precision. With songs like “All I Need”, JENNA’s music is an appealing alternative to the current hits by young women on the radio, and JENNA should have no problem attracting new fans at her live performances.

Waiting for Smith, "Nature's Mind"

WAITING FOR SMITH, “Nature’s Mind”

It’s hard not to love the direction that Waiting for Smith (aka Harry Lloyd) takes with his simple arrangements and folk-influenced flavour in songs like his latest release “Nature’s Mind”. Following up songs like “Let Light In” and “White Light of Love”, “Nature’s Mind” wants you to have a personal escape within your own head to find that serenity and joy you might be missing. As I’ve mentioned before when writing about the music of Waiting for Smith, it’s not at all preachy and full of best intentions, with long lasting effects and anticipation for what he will offer next. So relax and put your feet up, and let “Nature’s Mind” soak in for a few minutes.

The James Clark Institute, "Hit Hollywood"

THE JAMES CLARK INSTITUTE, “Hit Hollywood”

Toronto-based rockers The James Clark Institute have released their latest album Under The Lampshade, which is the third to be produced by the well-respected Moe Berg, of The Pursuit of Happiness and latterly of Trans-Canada Highwaymen (whose cover of The Guess Who’s “Undun” I recently wrote about). Like Moe, James Clark is heavily influenced by The Beatles, and the band’s sound evokes the punk rock eras of Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson, early Split Enz, and perhaps more recently, Green Day and Blink 182. The James Clark Institute’s sound is raw and authentic, solidified through many well-received live performances, and “Hit Hollywood” features some clever wordplay and a classic, punchy melodic structure. “Hit Hollywood” sounds so much like it could have been released in the early 80’s post punk era – which I can say wholeheartedly having lived through those years as a young adult. The songwriting is refreshing and James’ vocal here is a ringer for Billie Joe Armstrong.

Serena Ittoo, "Nature Foreseen"

SERENA ITTOO, “Nature Foreseen”

UK singer/songwriter Serena Ittoo brings us her debut single, a profound but inspiring song called “Nature Foreseen”. What starts off as a reflection on a past relationship that simply was not meant to be because the couple was not in tune to each other, ends up being a provocative but not too heavy empowerment anthem for anyone who has felt worthless with dreams shattered when a relationship ends. Serena has a beautiful voice with a lot of depth that helps make “Nature Foreseen” a lighter, positive affair, and while the production is certainly slick, some brief hip hop flavoured touches seem dated and out of place. They do not detract from the overall power of the song though, which makes a fine and memorable introduction to Serena Ittoo indeed.

#BILLCSTop30 #679 – November 20/23

I’m just gonna let the music speak for itself on this new chart! It’s hard to believe there will be only two more charts before the end of 2023!!

Here’s the link to the online version of the chart:  BILLCS Top 30

Here’s the link to my Spotify playlist of the chart:  Chart Playlist

Check out my ONLINE RADIO SHOWS below as they are increasingly tied in with this blog.  As most of you know, I host 3 online radio shows – The Big 20 and two iterations of Your Weekend New Music Mix – and produce 2 online radio segments – my new music and retro picks of the week – that are all pre-recorded.

Steve Angello, WH0, "What You Need"

The top of the chart remains the same as two of my favourite dance songs of the year will keep us movin’ and groovin’ through the early new year. At #1 again is Steve Angello & WH0 with “What You Need” (above) and #2 remains “Want My Lovin'” (below) by British producers Marvel Riot and American R&B/dance vocalist MOYA. Both cleverly use samples from older dance releases – “What You Need” draws from Carrie Lucas’ disco treasure “Gotta Keep Dancing”, while “Want My Lovin'” uses the hook from Felix’s 1992 house classic “Don’t You Want Me”.

Marvel Riot, MOYA, "Want My Lovin'"

Bright Light Bright Light, "Down To One"

Could Bright Light Bright Light notch up yet another #1 on my chart? With his first chart entry back in 2010 reaching the summit, his latest release “Down To One” could get there as soon as two weeks from now.

Felix Cartal, Karen Harding, "Need Your Love"

Rising 6-5 is “Need Your Love” (above) by Canadian dance producer Felix Cartal and UK house music queen Karen Harding. It’s Felix’s first Top 5 entry, though his side project Glass Petals got to #5 in 2021 with “Heartbeat”. For Karen, it’s her 4th trip to the Top 5, and her second one this year following #4 “Wings (I Won’t Let You Down)” with Armand Van Helden (whose first chart entry appeared back in 1999!). Karen’s concurrent chart entry “Wrong Places” (below), from her debut album Take Me Somewhere, climbs 19-16. Check out Felix’s latest release “Background Noise”, with vocalist and fellow Canadian Naliya, also below.

Karen Harding, "Wrong Places"

Felix Cartal, Naliya, "Background Noise"

The ALTÉGO remix of British singer/songwriter Tom Grennan’s bop “How Does It Feel” (below) breaks loose and climbs 13-8 in its 6th appearance (12th week) on the chart.

Tom Grennan, "How Does It Feel" (ALTEGO remix)

GT_Ofice, JAYEM, Alix Robson, "Can't Deny"

Miami producer Gt_ofice’s concurrent entries on the chart are both making waves. “Can’t Deny” (above, with JAYEM and Alix Robson) swiftly moves up 16-11, while “Feels Like Us” (below, with ALWZ SNNY and Robbie Rosen) rises 23-18. These are two different but fresh-sounding pop/dance tracks perfect for dance music radio.

Gt_ofice, ALWZ SNNY, Robbie Rosen, "Feels Like Us"

Pete Cho, "Fan of You"

Chicago producer and former restauranteur Pete Cho has one of the most likable new indie dance/pop songs around in “Fan of You”, up 17-12. The perspective of the song is post-breakup, but still amiable towards the ex as explained by the song’s title.

Martin Garrix, Lloyiso, "Real Love"

The Fastest Riser on the chart is by Martin Garrix, who to me has had one of his best years for music by taking risks and focusing on the pop/dance genre. Featuring South African vocalist Lloyiso, the simple but lovely “Real Love” soars 21-14.

Jung Kook, Jack Harlow, "3D"

Jung Kook and Jack Harlow’s “3D” (above) continues to move up, climbing 20-17, as both have released new singles. Also from Jung Kook’s album Golden is the funky, hip hop-inspired “Standing Next To You” (below), and Jack Harlow just got to #1 out of the gate with the catchy “Lovin on Me” (also below).

Jung Kook, "Standing Next To You"

Jack Harlow, "Lovin on Me"

“Superhero” should follow Audien’s “Antidote” (below) to the Top 10, and it’s off to a solid start, rising 26-20.

Audien, "Superhero"

Moonwood, "Curfew"

Australia-based rockers Moonwood are up 27-22 with “Curfew” (above) from their EP Curfew Hours, while Spain’s The Boy From The South” sees “Man Down” (below) climb 28-23.

The Boy from the South, "Man Down"

Benson Boone, "To Love Someone"

The first of three debuts belongs to the melt-worthy ballad “To Love Someone” by Washington-born singer/songwriter Benson Boone at #28. It’s Benson’s 4th appearance on the chart.

MELØ, "Memento"

Next at #29 is the first entry for prolific Windsor, Ontario pop/rock artist MELØ with “Memento”, a powerful song written in the aftermath of loss featuring some great 80’s-flavoured keyboard and guitar work. It’s from his 3-track EP called Farewell For Now.

Lohrasp Kansara, Norman Alexander, "Follow Me"

And at #30 is “Follow Me”, a cover of the 1992 house release (a big favourite of mine which became a club hit 10 years later in a re-recorded version) by ALY-US, as revived in reverent fashion by NYC producer Lohrasp Kansara and vocalist Norman Alexander, whose spot-on vocal really takes the song to another level.

BILLCS New Music Report – November 15/23 with new music by @BensonBoone @thisisWH0 @Prince_Paris @iamLoSpirit @TheDiscoFries #TheCapris #CayoCoco @Seven_Spies

In this week’s report, I have another varied selection of new tunes to check out, and it’s kind of a surprise that alternative pop/rock songs have been tweaking my ears in recent weeks more than electronic and dance music. But in remembering all my years and what music has been associated with them – even in the early 90’s where I took a brief liking to some “hair band metal” songs – dance music has always been some part of it. And you can look at my year end lists of favourites from the 90’s and you’ll also see a whole lot of alternative rock, which is no surprise given my college radio roots.

Among the features in the Report, you can check out my pick of the week, along with one from the host of online radio’s “Top 40 Timeline”, “Big Daddy” Russ Horton, plus “Modern Hype” online radio host Hunter Wilbur’s “Bop of the Week”. “The Musicman” James Rogers from online radio’s “3D Variety Show” has his Classic Five pop hits, which is an 80’s treasure trove of Canadian music this week. You’ll also find out what songs were in my Top 5 on the BILLCS Top 30 5, 10, 15 and 20 years ago.

Benson Boone, "To Love Someone"

BENSON BOONE, “To Love Someone”

While ballads by male singers are not exactly in vogue right now, there is no shortage of fine ones if you care to look. Benson Boone’s “In The Stars” made a surprise breakthrough to Top 40 radio this past summer, more than a year after it was released (it peaked at #2 on the BILLCS Top 30 last year). By then, Benson had been touring a lot and released a solid follow up EP Pulse, which featured some rock efforts like the infectious “Coffee Cake” (it recently peaked at #3 on the BILLCS Top 30). So with the belated success of “In The Stars”, it’s no surprise that another ballad has been released, but it is indeed a beaut. “To Love Someone” has a composed, fervidly emotional vocal by Benson and a story with which anyone will identify. I’m not normally a ballad fan, but with the right singer, production and lyrics, it can hit a home run. Ballad lovers and fans of great pop songs need to put “To Love Someone” on their priority listening list.

WH0, "Rock The Party"

WH0, “Rock The Party”

With their recent 90’s flavoured house track “What You Need” with Steve Angello topping the BILLCS Top 30, we get to take another dive into the latest from UK mystery dance producers WH0. These guys know their pop and house music history and how to create a sneaky groove with some inspired Daft Punk influence. Instantly recognizable is the hook from the 1988 house classic “Weekend” by the amazing Todd Terry, which some of you may know more when it was sampled in “Tonight It’s Party Time” by the Barry Harris 90’s project Outta Control. Along with original synth work, they have melded it with funky beats from The Clash’s “Rock The Casbah”. “Rock The Party” is a quick but slick slice of fun that is an instant club party starter.

Prince Paris, "Where I Wanna Be"

PRINCE PARIS, “Where I Wanna Be”

Montreal’s Prince Paris returns to the dance music scene, having only released a handful of singles since 2019, with the clever “Where I Wanna Be”. In his early career, Prince Paris, as part of DJ duo Paris & Simo, toured with David Guetta and played some of the biggest festivals in the world. Striking out on his own in 2016, he released singles with the likes of Karen Harding and Billie Eilish’s award winning brother Finneas. “Where I Wanna Be” brings him back full circle, with a Eurohouse-meets-trance melody that’s set to parts of Beverley Craven’s Top 5 1991 UK hit “Promise Me”, which dance music fans will also know was sampled by producer Lazard in 2002 for “4 O’Clock in the Morning” (which peaked at #8 on the BILLCS Top 30). I’m totally digging the trance revival of sorts this year and “Where I Wanna Be” is a dynamic addition for any club DJ’s who know that their audiences love a mix of house and trance. I’d also pitch it to dance music radio programmers looking to spice up their playlists with a tight and friendly slice of ear candy.

Lø Spirit, "Wild Things"

LØ SPIRIT, “Wild Things”

One of my biggest surprises of 2023 came early on when progressive electronic dance producers Dabin and Kai Wachi brought Atlanta singer/songwriter Lø Spirit (aka Josh Landry) aboard for “Hollow”. That explosively emotional slice of future bass reached #5 on the BILLCS Top 30, and with the more alternative rock-oriented “Wild Things”, we get to hear more what Lø Spirit offers as a solo artist. “Hollow” showed off Lø Spirit’s vocal range – a singer who can scream from the bottom of his lungs and still have amazing control and resonance in his singing voice. “Wild Things” shows some of that power in the chorus, but the emphasis here is more on melodic structure and lyrics about taking a chance to follow your hopes and dreams for something better. It’s a lovely song that continues to showcase the potential of Lø Spirit.

The Disco Fries, "Turn The Lights Off"

THE DISCO FRIES, “Turn The Lights Off”

New Jersey Disco Fries guys Nick and Danny follow up their recent album Another World with the gritty deep house of “Turn the Lights Off”. Led by an uncredited spoken/sung male vocal, this original composition is a quickie at only 2:19, so you might want to opt for the extended mix (above) at 3:03. It’s a taut, late night track that veers away from the pop/dance delights that The Disco Fries often present to us. So while it’s not recognizably Disco Fries, “Turn The Lights Off” is totally geared for clubs and DJ’s can have a lot of fun with it.

The Capris, "Melancholy Blues"

THE CAPRIS, “Melancholy Blues”

Meet The Capris, a new quartet from County Tyrone, Ireland that comprises vocalist Odhran, bassist Jonny, guitarist Padraic, and drummer Delaney. What hits you right in the face about “Melancholy Blues” when it begins to soar is that Odhran’s voice is a ringer for Kings of Leon’s Caleb Followill, equally expressive, raspy, and passionate in his performance.  The Capris have a stalwart, world-weary sound about them that will resonate with rock music fans. There isn’t a lot of flash but their sound is tidy and earnest, and will undoubtedly sound their best in live performance. I’m not too sure what “Melancholy Blues” is all about in the end but it’s an enjoyable first listen from The Capris.

Cayo Coco, "Stay Awhile"

CAYO COCO, “Stay Awhile”

Get a taste of L.A.-based indie singer/songwriter Cayo Coco’s second album Cosmic Healing with “Stay Awhile”. While the album was just released last week, “Stay Awhile” and another track, the much fiercer rocker “Haunt”, previewed the album as single releases. They certainly show two sides to Cayo Coco, whose real name is Lumen Loraine. “Stay Awhile” is a more melodic rocker that shows the singer in restless mode, alone and not knowing how to read people before jumping into a relationship, and looking to heal and understand it all better. While Cayo Coco is American, I hear a lot of British influence – intended or not – in this song, reminding me of early 80’s new wave and 2000’s UK singers like Patrick Wolf. The cool thing about “Stay Awhile” is that the song doesn’t seem to be headed in a particular direction at the start, but it shifts a few times, keeping your attention the entire time, and ends up somewhere unexpected by the end that I think you’ll enjoy.

Seven Spies, "Lie"

SEVEN SPIES, “Lie”

“Lie” is only the second single release from London alternative rock duo Seven Spies, which comprises guitarist, pianist and vocalist David Blomiley and drummer/vocalist Olly Brown. It’s a touching rock ballad about love that is never meant to be, for whatever reason or excuse, because the other person is not ready and can’t seem to articulate that. The intense chorus captures those times of confusion and anger when you just can’t figure out what is going on. The sound of Seven Spies seems to draw from the likes of Muse, Linkin Park and Bring Me The Horizon, and “Lie” was mastered at Abbey Road Studios by Alex Wharton (The Beatles, Radiohead and many more). At times I think the recording holds back a bit but thanks to a memorable chorus, “Lie” serves as a fitting introduction to Seven Spies.

BILLCS New Music Report – November 8/23 with new releases by @Cobimusic #Trans-CanadaHighwaymen @NeroUK @MattBoylanSmith @CapitalCities @JerinJamesmusic #LouisPax and @Koussmusic

Recently, Spotify announced that it will demonetize tracks with 1,000 plays or less, which will come as a shock for those folks who have got used to casually adding their latest work to streaming platforms for listeners to find. I think this is a good thing because there are other platforms for independent performers to grow their audiences, to the point where their songs can attract enough people on streaming services to make a bit of money. Another new policy also puts a stop to individuals spamming Spotify’s platform with other recorded stuff that isn’t music, as well as fining distributors and labels for adding fraudulent product to the service.

Independent artists struggling to get 1,000 plays on a song will have to resort to more promotion of their music to blogs and influencers as a prelude to streaming platform play. Those who are serious about it will not give up. Those who have been adding their songs to Spotify just on a whim will need to do a rethink.

Among the features in the Report, you can check out my pick of the week, along with one from the host of online radio’s “Top 40 Timeline”, “Big Daddy” Russ Horton, plus “Modern Hype” online radio host Hunter Wilbur’s “Bop of the Week”. “The Musicman” James Rogers from online radio’s “3D Variety Show” has his Classic Five pop hits, which take us back to the 1986-87 era. And in case you missed them on Monday, you’ll find out what songs are #1 and the Fastest Riser on the latest BILLCS Top 30.

As you may have noticed last week, I’ve decided to no longer use the words “Spotlighting” or “Featuring” because in truth all of the songs are worth checking out, or else I wouldn’t be writing about them!

The BILLCS New Music Report is always a work-in-progress and I welcome your suggestions so feel free to contact me at through my social media links right here.

Cobi, "Where We Belong"

COBI, “Where We Belong”

“Where We Belong” is the powerful ballad companion piece that I’ve been awaiting from L.A.-based singer/songwriter Cobi for his song “Telepathic Powers”, the dreamy, bluesy release from earlier in the year which reached #5 on the BILLCS Top 30. “Where We Belong” is the kind of song that draws a hush over a crowd. With the majority of the song solely piano and voice, its grounded story is comforting and reassuring to those who are feeling lost and alone, driven by Cobi’s passionate vocal. And just wait for Cobi’s lucid guitar work later in the song to really lift it up and bring it home. Don’t miss this one.

Trans-Canada Highwaymen, "Undun"

TRANS-CANADA HIGHWAYMEN, “Undun”

The Trans-Canada Highwaymen is a new Canadian supergroup comprising biz veterans Moe Berg (Pursuit of Happiness), Chris Murphy (Sloan), Craig Northey (The Odds) and Steven Page (ex-Barenaked Ladies), which means that their album of covers of largely Canadian hits, appropriately titled Explosive Hits Vol. 1 (love the K-Tel-inspired cover art!), is well worth checking out. While these talented guys put their spin on a variety of pop songs by April Wine, Michel Pagliaro, Paul Anka, The Stampeders, and even a well-done update of the DeFranco Family’s 1973 smash “Heartbeat – It’s A Lovebeat”, it’s their take on The Guess Who’s 1969 international hit “Undun”, with lead vocal by Steven Page, that stands out the most. The spirit and urgency of the original are there, minus the psychedelic undertones of that era, and Steven’s vocal is outstanding. All of the guys get their opportunities to shine on the album, which is highly recommended for any of their fans as well as lovers of Canadian music in general.

Nero, "Truth"

NERO, “Truth”

For many long-time electronic music fans, British trio Nero ranks with the best artists in the genre. They’ve been together for over 20 years, and their most recognizable work appeared over a decade ago, culminating in a Grammy (along with pal Skrillex) for best remixed (non-classical) recording of their UK #1 smash “Promises”. Their second album Between II Worlds became a North American #1 electronic dance chart hit in 2015, and after that members worked on solo projects and raised families. Only last year did they surprise fans and resurface on Deadmau5’s tour, and have since started releasing new music again. The propulsive dubstep banger “Truth” follows up “Renegade” (with R.L. Grime) and comes from Nero’s upcoming long-awaited third album Into The Unknown. It’s a busy, clever track that will jar you with its push-pull rhythm and otherworldly vocal. “Truth” is a gleaming, futuristic forecast of what electronic music has in store for us.

Matt Boylan-Smith, "The Only Eyes I've Ever Known"

MATT BOYLAN-SMITH, “The Only Eyes I’ve Ever Known”

It’s been a while since I first introduced you to indie Australian singer/songwriter Matt Boylan-Smith, who is back with his lovely tribute to family, “The Only Eyes I’ve Ever Known”. As much as it fits alongside the folk-pop of artists like The Lumineers, “Only Eyes” has wider appeal, a cross between Newton Faulkner and Ed Sheeran with a few dashes of The Waterboys and The Proclaimers. Matt’s songwriting leaves you hanging on each verse as his story unfolds, and the chorus becomes a singalong that you’ll wait to hear again and again. Folk-influenced pop has been making great strides these past few years to get back into the public consciousness and stay there, instead of being led by a handful of successful one-off’s, and artists like Matt will help it get there.

Capital Cities, "Skeleton Man"

CAPITAL CITIES, “Skeleton Man”

L.A. based duo Capital Cities follow up their first releases in about 5 years, “Together” (with Bobby Nourmand, reached #12 on the BILLCS Top 30) and “Summertime with U” (with former member Spencer Ludwig, which I also wrote about a while back), with the danceable bop “Skeleton Man”. Its bright and funky synth pop melody accompanied by trumpet – courtesy once again of Spencer Ludwig, who may as well use “Safe and Sound” as his middle name – as well as xylophone effects that are part of a bounty of sounds and flourishes for you to absorb. Ryan and Sebu keep it light with bone references throughout. Smooth production and fluid harmonies make it easy to invest some time with “Skeleton Man”. The group has made the song available on their website for free download for now so get it while you can by clicking on the following song title: “Skeleton Man”.

Jerin James, "Wildfire"

JERIN JAMES, “Wildfire”

“Wildfire” follows up L.A.-based electronic producer Jerin James’ recent release “Fly Away”, which I wrote about a while back, and both come from his forthcoming album. “Wildfire” is an imaginative and melodic track featuring an uncredited female vocalist singing a brief set of lyrics that frame the song. It has loads of sync possibilities for scenes in video games, action films or documentaries. “Wildfire” develops a distinct impression for the listener as the vocal evolves into a convincing and compelling distorted effect, and ultimately lets us conjure up whatever appropriate imagery will go with the flow.

Louis Pax, "this is not america (i heard it on the news)"

LOUIS PAX, “this is not america (i heard it on the news)”

Swedish pop/rock trio Louis Pax return with a new EP called in case I don’t see ya, pt. 1, which includes the previous singles “The Road Back” and “in case I don’t see ya”. “this is not america” is a thought-provoking song depicting contemporary America as seen through the eyes of Europeans on the news. America is often seen as the example to follow for the rest of the world, and the song is critical about whether or not that should be the case. Sometimes the most obvious path is not the one to take and we need to reflect and choose what’s right for us regardless of popularity. So yes, “this is not america” seems a little more downbeat than usual to start, but the melody and Oscar Reingsdahl’s vocal make it rise part way, allowing the song to finish on a high, upbeat note.  Louis Pax continue to portray themselves through their music as a tight often introspective band that wears its good intentions on its sleeves.

Kouss, Anna Kline, "Can't Go Back"

KOUSS, ANNA KLINE, “Can’t Go Back”

As readers of this blog will know, you were first tipped off to “Can’t Go Back” by my online radio buddy Hunter Wilbur, who designated it as his Pick of the Week a few weeks back. And with repeated plays at my end, I’ve found that I’ve been enjoying it too. Kouss is a DJ/producer and multi-instrumentalist from south Florida who experienced being signed to a major label as part of a band. An accident in 2020 left him unable to play drums for an extended period, during which he developed his production skills. “Can’t Go Back” is actually Kouss’ debut release, a slick pop/dance single for him featuring a fine vocal from Nashville-based, Ohio-born Anna Kline, who has written hundreds of songs and is a sought-after top-liner. The result is a catchy slice of ear candy that you’ll find yourself playing on repeat. It’s always nice to be in on a debut single and “Can’t Go Back” is off to a solid start for Kouss.

#BILLCSTop30 #678 – November 6/23

Although my ears have been tuned to songs in other genres for the past few weeks, the outbreak of great dance releases at the end of summer is showing its presence on the new BILLCS Top 30.

Swedish House Mafia’s Steve Angello gets his first #1 as a solo artist and label owner with “What You Need” on his Size Records imprint. As part of SHM, Steve reached #1 in 2012 with “Don’t You Worry Child”. “What You Need” is also the first #1 for UK mystery producers WH0. As I mentioned previously, the song contains a sublime sample of the disco hit “Gotta Keep Dancing” by Carrie Lucas.

Marvel Riot, MOYA, "Want My Lovin'"

Claiming the runner up spot is “Want My Lovin'” (5-2), the other sensational retrotastic house track by British producers Marvel Riot and American R&B/pop/dance singer MOYA. It samples Felix’s 1992 gem “Don’t You Want Me” as the instrumental hook.

Voyajer, "Come Around"

Denver-based producer Voyajer is up another notch with “Come Around” climbing 4-3.

Michael Medrano, "Disco Sleaze (Raw and Uncut)"

L.A.’s Michael Medrano gets a personal best on the chart as the deliciously innuendo-laden “Disco Sleaze” (in its raw and uncut remix) rises 6-4.  Michael recently shot his first video for his single “Karma”. To finally see the disco dad behind the music in action, click on the photo below.Michael Medrano, "Karma"

Bright Light Bright Light, "Down To One"

For the second chart in a row, Bright Light Bright Light’s “Down To One” is the Fastest Riser, soaring 12-5, becoming BLx2’s 10th Top 5 entry on the chart.

John Dahlback, Davis Mallory, "Top of the World"

The second entry into the Top 10 is the first for both artists. Sweden’s John Dahlbäck and Nashville’s Davis Mallory climb 13-10 with the uplifting “Top of the World”.

Tom Grennan, "How Does It Feel" (ALTEGO remix)

Although it was a Top 20 hit in the UK in the summer, I can’t get enough of the bop that is the ALTÉGO remix of Tom Grennan’s “How Does It Feel”. The song has been rising slowly but breaks through and moves 19-13.

GT_Ofice, JAYEM, Alix Robson, "Can't Deny"

Miami producer Gt_ofice has a flurry of activity happening with his two recent singles. “Can’t Deny” (above), with JAYEM and Alix Robson, charges up 21-16, while “Feels Like Us” (below), the breezy end of summer song with ALWZ SNNY and Robbie Rosen, climbs 29-23.

Gt_ofice, ALWZ SNNY, Robbie Rosen, "Feels Like Us"

Pete Cho, "Fan of You"

Not to be discounted is the immensely enjoyable single by Chicago producer Pete Cho called “Fan of You” which moves up 22-17.

Jung Kook, Jack Harlow, "3D"

With the release of his new album Golden causing all kinds of waves this past week, BTS’ Jung Kook and new BFF Jack Harlow move up 26-20 with “3D”.

Audien, "Superhero"

While it hardly seems like long ago that “Antidote” graced the chart (peaking at #10), Audien returns with the super-infectious “Superhero” at #26. The uncredited vocalist is co-writer and British singer Joe Jury, who was credited on Audien’s big dance radio hit “Drifting Away” last year. Look for “Superhero” to make short work of the dance radio charts too.

Moonwood, "Curfew"

In at #27 is the first entry for Australia-based rockers Moonwood with “Curfew” from their smashing new EP Curfew Hours. The band is actually a hybrid of Australian, American and Canadian talent.

The Boy from the South, "Man Down"

Spain’s The Boy From The South recently returned home from a huge tour of Mexico and some South American countries, which included many stops at radio stations. He has more gigs planned in Barcelona and London, and his latest good-natured grower of a song “Man Down” (#28) should help take him through to them.

Manila Killa, Linney, "Sacredly"

Rounding out the new entries at #29 is the deep house track “Sacredly” by Washington DC producer and frequent blog visitor Manila Killa and vocalist/songwriter Linney.  It’s Manila Killa’s 5th chart entry, with “Dusk” (with Lights) reaching #2 last year, and it’s Linney’s 3rd visit, reaching #3 previously singing Gareth Emery & NASH’s 2020 entry “Yesterday”.
