BILLCS New Music Report – November 1/23 bringing you new songs by Audien, YEBBA, Benedict Cork, Vion Konger & Lusso, Kacey Fifield, MELO, Modern Machines and NOANNE

I’ll let the music do the talking this week. I hope you continue to enjoy the refreshing selection of new tunes I bring to you every week.

Among the features in the Report, you can check out my pick of the week, along with one from the host of online radio’s “Top 40 Timeline”, “Big Daddy” Russ Horton, plus “Modern Hype” online radio host Hunter Wilbur’s “Bop of the Week”. “The Musicman” James Rogers from online radio’s “3D Variety Show” has his Classic Five pop hits, which this week teleport us back to 1974. You’ll also find out what the BILLCS Top 30 looked like 23 years ago!

I’ve made one change to the Report. I’ve decided to no longer use the words “Spotlighting” or “Featuring” because in truth all of the songs are worth checking out, or else I wouldn’t be writing about them!

Audien, "Superhero"

AUDIEN, “Superhero”

“Superhero” is bound to be a new festival favourite by electronic dance producer Audien, who continues to have another great year with releases following his #1 dance radio hit “Antidote”. If you know his song from last year, “Drifting Away”, you’ll instantly recognize the uncredited vocal – and why it’s uncredited is puzzling – of British singer/songwriter Joe Jury, who is also one of the co-writers. Joe’s vocal is delightfully dreamy and the early 2010’s throwback piano house melody is just the tonic that a lot of us need right now. Cue the cell phone flashlights, “Superhero” tugs at those emotional strings and should be taking over dance music charts anytime soon.

YEBBA, "Waterfall (I Adore You)"

YEBBA, “Waterfall (I Adore You)”

She’s got one of the best voices on the pop scene since she emerged in 2016, with a Grammy Award to whit, and Nebraska-born YEBBA is back with her first new studio recording of 2023, the dreamy alternative pop ballad “Waterfall (I Adore You)”. It’s a welcome diversion from her often complex and personal songs, which formed the basis of her 2021 album Dawn. We all get caught up in the moment at the time and don’t want to change the mood, preferring it to linger as long as it possibly can. YEBBA knows that she has to follow her own lead and calls out naysayers right from the get-go. Her vocal is pristine and the song is a soulful foray into infatuation, supported by relaxing backdrop of bright melodies. Let’s hope that YEBBA doesn’t slip away for another year without more new music. “Waterfall (I Adore You)” definitely begs for more.

Benedict Cork, "Soulmates"

BENEDICT CORK, “Soulmates”

Following up his late 2022 release “Dream of You” (which peaked at #7 on the BILLCS Top 30), Hertfordshire-born Benedict Cork brings us the inspiring “Soulmates”. Benedict is now so recognizable as a singer, songwriter and pianist that “Soulmates” is really a sum of all of the best of what he does. His voice soars, the piano twinkles, and the words transport us elsewhere where we may just have a soulmate. For those of us who only dream of such a thing, the song is very fanciful, and for those of us who once had one, or thought we had one, it gives us hope that someone else is waiting for us. “Soulmates” is top notch stuff, and you can be assured you’ll be humming along all winter.

Vion Konger, Lusso, "Wait For The Drums"

If you’re looking for a heavy banger that will test the power of your biggest speakers, then “Wait For The Drums” by Russian producer Vion Konger and rising NYC producer/remixer Lusso will leave you mighty satisfied. “Drums” has to be one of the hardest hitting deep house songs of the year, a relentless, loud production full of bounce that leaves no stone unturned. Think of producers like Hardwell, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, and Timmy Trumpet when they just let loose – “Wait For The Drums” is dynamic and fun, and will certainly leave you breathless on the dance floor.

Kacey Fifield, "Vegas"

KACEY FIFIELD, “Vegas”

“Vegas” is the latest release from Kacey Fifield, recently relocated to NYC from L.A., an edgier, more provocative electronic pop song than what we’ve heard from her recently. It follows the lead of previous single “Self Sabotage” and its refreshing, uncluttered and vulnerable story. Instead of self-reflection, “Vegas” focuses on the young playboys types who start sordid lives with gambling and drugs, and revealing them when they cheat on their girlfriends. The straight-forward melody is memorable, and “Vegas” is once again a stalwart collaboration between Kacey and Robbie Rosen, who also produced.

MELØ, “Memento” (as featured in the short-film “Farewell For Now”, above)

Windsor-based alternative artist MELØ has released an EP and its accompanying short film called “Farewell For Now”. The film is about a life well-lived, obstacles (such as blindness), loss (specifically of his father), as well as hope, adapting and moving on. It’s beautifully shot and nuanced, taking its time to unfold its sad and touching story, a collaborative work by MELØ with his family and friends. The EP consists of three songs, “Sleep Alone”, the interlude “Exit Stage Light”, and “Memento”. The shift to “Memento” in the film is riveting, like those turning points in life where you abruptly realize that you simply must do something. The infectious guitar/synth melody reminds me of BT and Tori Amos’ “Blue Skies” meeting songs by new wave groups like New Order half way. It’s one of MELØ’s most compelling songs to date. There are a lot of take away’s from “Farewell For Now”, and “Memento” is an impressive bridge to whatever’s next.

Modern Machines, "Brooklyn"

MODERN MACHINES, “Brooklyn”

With a nod to his current home, NYC’s Modern Machines (aka Dimitry Mak) brings us “Brooklyn”, a fast-paced house track with an irresistible and invigorating melody. The use of an uncredited repeated female vocal sample here is effective and the brevity and euphoric nature of the song allow the repetition to work for the song rather than against it. Modern Machines has been honing his craft for the best part of the last decade, often as a remixer (such as for The Knocks and Foster The People’s “Ride or Die”) but also with his originals, which have been released on many of the biggest dance labels. This has allowed him to play the best of North American dance clubs and festivals while maintaining a steady social media presence, lately on the Threads app. “Brooklyn” is an enjoyable rave up that club DJ’s shouldn’t miss out on.

NOANNE, "Goodwill"

NOANNE, “Goodwill”

“Goodwill” is an unconventionally theatrical slice of alternative pop brought to you by Prague-based singer/songwriter/actress NOANNE. Choosing to be an enigma, she lets her music and images do the talking, and there is lots to talk about in the video for “Goodwill”. Based on the premises that “the road to hell is paved with good intentions”, the story of love gone sour is full of dramatic and startling images, stunning cinematography (much of it through the use of AI), and compelling direction. In it NOANNE has a anti-hero presence like Madonna had in some of her videos, while her vocal tones at times recall the power of Annie Lennox. “Goodwill” is bold and fanciful, especially for those of you who enjoy their engaging pop songs with a strong dose of melodrama.

BILLCS New Music Report – October 25/23 Spotlighting new songs by @Moonwoodmusic @YearsofWarmusic @RossLynch & @TheDriverEra @PartyPupils, @MAXmusic, @bbnomula & #MILLI

Like last week, my attention with the current week’s selections again drifted away from dance music – though there are three wonderful new dance tracks in this edition of the Report.  Be sure to check out all eight of these very strong songs, varying from future bass through alternative rock through pop/R&B. Variety, as they say, is the spice of life!

SPOTLIGHTING

Moonwood, "Curfew"

MOONWOOD, “Curfew”

Australia-based rock quintet have a lot of top quality songs waiting for the world to hear in their new 5 song EP Curfew Hours. It includes the heart-wrenching ballad “Let It Go”, which I wrote about recently. I rarely repost about a song I’ve written about, but with the release of this EP, “Curfew” has grown on me a lot since my original take on it, which I now feel was incomplete. It’s a radio-friendly rocker that college and alternative radio stations would eat up. Moonwood is a tight outfit which has a dynamic vocalist/songwriter in Jake McCullough, and I enjoy when his voice has the opportunity to soar. For whatever reason, the song structure of “Curfew” reminds me of the mid-80’s UK new wave era, and retro appeal like that never hurts. You really can’t go wrong though with other songs in Curfew Hours like “Cool If I Love You?”, and you’re bound to latch on to a new favourite. And if you’re in Australia, you might want to keep an eye out for local show dates from Moonwood in future as their songs are likely heard best live.

Years of War, "Used To Be"

YEARS OF WAR, “Used To Be”

Years of War is the new artist name for NYC-based electronic dance talents Rico & Miella – I guess we can now properly call them Rico and Michelle! – with “Used To Be” their second single under the new moniker. Just when you least expected after the 40 second vocal intro, this fresh song revs up into a future bass frenzy by the end of the first 70 seconds, creating immediate curiosity and anticipation for what’s next. Michelle’s touching vocal alternates between tender and urgent moments and the second, even wilder build up before another drop exceeds what electronic music fans would expect. I’ll pitch “Used To Be” to fans of Illenium, Trivecta, Seven Lions, and Nurko, but it’s a top notch song which could attract dance music fans outside of the harder core sub-genres.

Ross Lynch, The Driver Era, "Rumours"

ROSS LYNCH, THE DRIVER ERA, “Rumours”

I’m always happy to write about a good new song by L.A.’s Ross and Rocky Lynch under their project name The Driver Era, though Ross’ name has now been added I suppose for marquee value. I saw the Lynches and their siblings perform live as R5 10 years ago and since then have been captivated by their cohesive talent (Ross was pretty good in Netflix’s “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” too!). Their 2020 single “Take Me Away” also got to #11 on the BILLCS Top 30. “Rumours” is a kiss-off song to an ex who has nothing better to do than gossip about her former boyfriend’s new love life, while he couldn’t care in the least (in fact, he enjoys it). It’s a snappy guitar-drums rocker filled up in the background by a wash of soft keyboards, that focuses on the vocals and harmonies to make it resonate easily. It follows up last year’s Summer Mixtape and the guys’ second album Girlfriend, but this time as a self-released indie, so I’m hoping that a third album is in the works for next year. “Rumours” is a great way to kick it all off.

Party Pupils, MAX, bbno$, MILLI, "Girlfriend"

PARTY PUPILS, MAX, bbno$, MILLI, “Girlfriend”

NYC’s Party Pupils is MAX’s ongoing side project with his producer/guitarist buddy Ryan Siegel, and Ryan has continued to release several recent songs under this moniker, including last year’s “Me Without You” with rising dance music star Kaleena Zanders. Aside from some streaming shows during the pandemic, “Girlfriend” is actually MAX and Ryan’s first recorded project together since 2020. It’s a zippy, enjoyable track to which you can let loose, with the streetwise addition of Canada’s bbno$ and Thailand’s MILLI worked aptly into the mix. Their respective refreshing raps flesh out the song and increase the playfulness count.  If you enjoy recent R&B flavoured dance releases by A-Trak or Purple Disco Machine, then “Girlfriend” is worth adding to your favourite playlist. JAY BIRD, ALLIEY XO, “Touch”

Bay area electronic dance producer Jay Bird continues his immersion into deep house, sometimes with retro flavours or inspiration, and “Touch” is another fun track. In collaboration with L.A. vocalist/DJ Alliey XO, “Touch” benefits from a playful vocal and some 90’s techno touches which bring to mind Wildfire’s classic “Renegade Master” or music by the likes of Groove Armada or Deep Dish. “Touch” is a great addition for club DJ’s looking to build excitement in their sets where their audience/dancers can have a great time.

Church of Trees, "Pet Sematary"

CHURCH OF TREES, “Pet Sematary”

A cover of The Ramones’ 1989 movie theme “Pet Sematary” may not have been exactly something that has crossed your mind, but Ottawa’s Church Of Trees intends to convince you that it is indeed a good thing with their thoughtful take on the song. Picture if you will a slowed-down acoustic piano version that has been expanded to include rock instruments along with some lush synths, which give it a larger-than-life sound, shadowing the late Jim Steinman’s school of production. It features guest Heather Brazeau’s fervid vocal, with breadth in the same vein as Amy Lee or Hayley Williams but with possible nods to Heart’s Ann Wilson and Grace Slick when they’ve sung ballads. Co-produced by CoT’s Bernard Frazer and Blinker The Star’s Jordan Zadorozny (who also plays drums), “Pet Sematary” may just be that new surprise to tickle your fancy. Church of Trees’ next album Transience is due in early 2024.

Matt Terry, "You Don't Know Nothing"

The music business can be merciless, and despite two Top 10 hits (which included “Subeme La Radio” with Enrique Iglesias and Sean Paul), that didn’t seem enough for his label and other supposed advocates to support Matt Terry back in 2018. So 2017 the X-Factor UK winner who hails from Bromley in greater London is back as an indie talent, after refocusing his songwriting skills and performing in UK theatre and on cruise ships these past few years, with a funky downtempo slice of business called “You Don’t Know Nothing”. It’s a solid original that’s a step in the right direction, joining the always interesting UK soul and dance genre where some interesting opportunities could await him. It also takes him away from being classified as an interpreter. If you enjoy the songs of Samm Henshaw or Leon Bridges, then be sure to check out the video for “You Don’t Know Nothing” above.

RiTcH, "Big Dream"

“Big Dream” is my big new surprise of a fresh bop this week, only the third single release from British singer/songwriter RiTcH (aka Richard Scholes) who hails from Warrington in Cheshire, England. “Big Dream” is top notch indie bedroom production that immediately caught my ear along with its tale of a former girlfriend who returns coincidentally when the protagonist garners some success, though he’s ready to confront it because he knows she has selfish, ulterior motives. Its uptempo exterior doesn’t clash with the rather sullen nature of the plot. RiTcH provides a solid vocal in the guise of just another guy next door, which puts him on the same playing field as the listener, making “Big Dream” an easily relatable, fine release.

#BILLCSTop30 #677 – October 23/23

What is wrong in the music business when collaborators can’t even given their vocalists proper credit? I’m not talking about vocalists whose upfront arrangement with their collaborators declines credit, that’s a personal decision. I’m talking about situations like the following:

  • Vocalist is paid a lump sum NOT to be credited, which is harsh if the vocalist isn’t a songwriter
  • Vocalist is “new” and because s/he has no “identity”, is deemed not to be credit-worthy
  • When promoting the song on social media, collaborators don’t even mention or thank the vocalist if otherwise credited
  • Collaborators don’t decide splits until long after the start of a song was created, and give the vocalist either a puny portion or none at all
  • Collaborators decide to proceed with recording a song even if the vocalist is not in agreement, which usually results in the vocalist not being credited

I’ve seen all of these scenarios play out. The sooner some artists stop focusing on being “the star” or upholding their “image” and develop a friendlier part of the recording process, the less animosity between artists will occur. Right now many vocalists are simply getting shafted and that wouldn’t have happened before 15-20 years ago, when the majority of the time they were deemed the stars of their recordings.

Getting a third appearance at #1 is Troye Sivan with “Rush” (above). His new 3rd album Something To Give Each Other impressively reached #1 in Australia! And then there’s also the enjoyably titillating video for “One of The Girls” which also stars Ross Lynch, which you can check out below.

Steve Angello, WH0, "What You Need"

It looks like “Rush” will be replaced at the top in two weeks by Steve Angello and WH0, whose super-infectious retro 90’s house track “What You Need” climbs 6-2. I learned recently that the song includes a brief sample of Carrie Lucas’ disco classic “Gotta Keep Dancing”. What I’d like to know is what powerhouse vocalist lent her voice to the track because she is awesome!

MAX, JVKE, Bazzi, "Strings"

MAX’s “Strings”, with JVKE and Bazzi, rises 4-3 to match the #3 peak of the song to which it is a sequel of sorts, “Lights Down Low”. Only MAX’s 2015 release “Wrong” (featuring Lil Uzi Vert) has gone higher, reaching #1.

Voyajer, "Come Around"

Some of the long-lasting favourites in the Top 10 clear out this week, allowing Denver electronic dance producer Voyajer’s fantastic indie release “Come Around” to move up 7-4.

Michael Medrano’s fun party track “Disco Sleaze” (above) climbs 9-6, and you can check out his latest dance release “Karma” below.

Felix Cartal, Karen Harding, "Need Your Love"

“Need Your Love” (above) by Felix Cartal and Karen Harding soars 17-8, becoming Felix’s 4th Top 10 entry (which includes a #5 “Heartbeat” by his side project Glass Petals) and Karen’s 8th consecutive Top 10 entry, while the lead track from her album Take Me Somewhere, “Wrong Places” (below) rises 30-23.

UK’s Sam Dickinson obtains his 6th Top 10 entry and first since 2020 with the house track “Falling”, which advances 11-9.

JRDN, "What Do I Got To Do"

Moving 13-10 is “What Do I Got To Do” featuring the slick R&B/pop sounds of Toronto-based singer/songwriter JRDN.

The Fastest Riser on the chart is the increasingly infectious “Down To One” by Bright Light Bright Light, which vaults 24-12. If you haven’t checked out the fun, horror movie-themed video for the song, I’ve put the direct link to the video above. BLx2 is a horror movie connoisseur so you know some of the scenes he borrows are sublime.

John Dahlback, Davis Mallory, "Top of the World"

“Top Of The World” (above) by Sweden’s John Dahlback and Nashville-based singer Davis Mallory rises 21-13, and it’s another independently released house track deserving of your attention. Davis recently also teamed up with producers D’Amico & Valax, Matisso and Fenox for “Artificial Love”, below.

James Bay, "Goodbye Never Felt So Bad"

James Bay’s “Goodbye Never Felt So Bad” (above) continues to move up 20-16, and you can check out the video to his affecting new follow up release “All My Broken Pieces” below.

Miami electronic dance producer Gt_ofice gets two entries on the chart this week! His first, with JAYEM and Alix Robson, “Can’t Deny” (above), moves up 27-21, while his second collaboration with Maryland masked producer ALWZ SNNY, “Feels Like Us” (below) featuring vocalist Robbie Rosen, arrives on the chart at #29. It’s also Robbie’s 11th chart entry since 2020.

Jung Kook, Jack Harlow, "3D"

The Highest Debut at #26 belongs to BTS’ Jung Kook with hip hop artist Jack Harlow called “3D”. It comes from Jung Kook’s forthcoming album, Golden. He’s the second BTS member to reach the chart as a solo act. The first was JIMIN, whose “Like Crazy” (English version) held court atop the BILLCS Top 30 earlier this year for 4 appearances (8 weeks). Martin Garrix, Lloyiso, "Real Love"

Then at #27 is another familiar name on the chart, Dutch electronic dance producer Martin Garrix, whose direction in 2023 has seemed to be for more radio friendly hits rather than for clubs. His collaboration with South African vocalist Lloyiso, “Real Love”, recalls Aloe Blacc’s work with Avicii. It’s Martin’s 13th chart entry, following his #1 from earlier this year with JVKE, “Hero”.

DVBBS, Jesse Jo Stark, "Breathe"

Rounding out the debuts at #30 is “Breathe” by Toronto-area producers DVBBS and L.A. vocalist Jesse Jo Stark. It’s quite an unconventional song for both, with eerie trance-inspired production and a sultry vocal outside of Jesse Jo’s usual rock songs. It’s DVBBS’ 5th chart entry, following last year’s “Summer Nights” (#7, with Brandyn Burnette).

BILLCS New Music Report – October 18/23 spotlighting new songs by @ManilaKilla & @Linneymusic @NiGHTS_official @CamBlakemusic & @theCodyLawless #The004

Regular readers of this blog and the BILLCS New Music Report know that I write about a lot of upbeat dance tracks, and even this week’s Report spotlights one banger that’s especially versatile. I don’t know whether it was just the selection that I listened to this week, but a lot of the upbeat dance tracks that I heard were much of the styles that are growing stale and tiresome, such as the classic pop/dance song geared for radio play and nothing else, or the more progressive, somewhat adventurous songs that have no hook or lasting ability, and therefore don’t go anywhere. Or, maybe it was just an off week. So the rest of this week’s eight spotlighted and featured songs largely veer away from more conventional dance music, into vocal pop, rock, and hip hop, as well as electronic.

MANILA KILLA, LINNEY, “Sacredly”

“Sacredly” is an unexpected 90’s techno-flavoured banger from Manila Killa, who doesn’t hesitate to take any risks with his most recent releases. With a fun, herky-jerky rhythm, plenty of bounce, and an other-worldly vocal from frequent dance music vocalist/songwriter Linney, Also co-written with Damon Sharpe, “Sacredly” reignites the essence of dancing at a club as an ongoing religious experience of its own that’s been driven by past favourites like “God Is A DJ” by Faithless. The music recalls the late 90’s era of The Chemical Brothers and Darude, and is destined to be a new club favourite.

N i G H T S, XYC, “Spotlight”

Earlier this year, Philadelphia electronic hip hop duo N i G H T S revived their 2018 release “Boyband” with a new video, and this song, which I missed the first time around, really caught my ear, reaching #6 on the BILLCS Top 30. The guys’ latest release “Spotlight” finds them in similarly chill, moody hip hop territory with help from rapper XYC. While their sound sometimes sounds disembodied or disinterested, there are enough playful, if sometimes quite subtle, add-on moments in “Spotlight” which shows how well N i G H T S have honed their unpretentious style over most of the last decade. While it’s not for everyone, if you enjoyed “Boyband” or other songs by N i G H T S then make damn sure you listen to “Spotlight”.

Cam Blake, Cody Lawless, Mythos, "Gravity"

CAM BLAKE, CODY LAWLESS, MYTHOS “Gravity”

Vancouver, B.C. based alternative rock artist and producer Cam Blake offers an unconventional mix of guitars and synths on his new track “Gravity”, which also features fellow Canadian singer/songwriter Cody Lawless (formerly of the project KNOWN) and electro-acoustic artist Mythos. It follows last year’s EP Finding My Way Home and Cam’s debut 2021 album Bad Vacation, in advance of his sophomore release Satisfaction of Sameness next year. Cam has a sometimes gritty voice that stands out in a Geddy Lee kind of way and lends a driving energy to “Gravity” from the slick instrumentation within. The bright and fluid synths sound like a throwback to the 1970’s, yet the song all comes together as an unexpectedly cohesive package which doesn’t quite sound like anything out there, packing an anthemic punch and singalong chorus. THE 004, “Can’t Let You Go”

Earlier this year I introduced you to Dutch trio The 004 (Mike, Kelly, and Janet), who have been singing together for over 20 years, and have now released their debut album of 10 songs called We Are. The album is especially tailored for listeners who enjoy a focus on vocal talent, and from it “Can’t Let You Go” could become your go-to track. With minimal instrumentation and clean production, “Can’t Let You Go” is a convincing mid-tempo ballad about doing the right thing and trying to work out your issues with your special someone. The song starts out rather suddenly with Mike’s firm lower register but the momentum builds naturally with the addition of Kelly and Janet, and everything gels completely. Somehow the mood of “Can’t Let You Go” reminds me a bit of Kleerup and Robyn’s 2007 UK #1 collaboration “With Every Heartbeat”, and like that song works its way into being a lovely, heartfelt story.

Electronic music and gaming fans should know that an Osmond is in their midst! The Osmond family name continues on in showbiz with 32 year old singer/actor/fitness trainer Eric Osmond, son of Jay and nephew to Donny and Marie. Eric’s also involved in the gaming world, so knowing this it’s not surprising that “Misfire (Forget Me)” is a darker, electronic release that could easily be part of a gaming soundtrack. It’s a short track that gives you a taste of Eric’s smooth and warm lower register set to compelling, lush synths, and it certainly makes me want to hear more.

Carl Man, "Celebrities"

UK-Asian singer Carl Man has been keeping busy these past several years on the UK’s west side performing and receiving rave reviews in prominent roles in the plays “Wicked” and “& Juliet”, so I was pleased to hear his first single in three years called “Celebrities”. It’s a light pop delight featuring Carl sounding at his best, initially recorded for an album a few years back that never came to fruition. Some of you may find that the melody and wordplay harken back to Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” era, but Carl puts his own playful, energetic spin on it. Carl’s talents first came to my attention years ago with now hard-to-find dance releases “Electrify The Night” and “Music Gods”, about which you can dig further back into my blog pages, and it’s great to have him back with with solid pop like “Celebrities”.

DLG., "Over My Head!"

DLG., “Over My Head!”

L.A.-based electronic producer DLG. follows up his recent mellow single “Kung Fu” with the much perkier “Over My Head!”. This release, which has elements of drum ‘n bass and perhaps even hip hop, uses a similar-sounding synth backdrop that reminds me of 60’s go-go music, as well as a spoken/sung vocal style, but additional layers of production give it some added zing which will grab your attention. “Over My Head!” is a brisk, rhythmic track that is one of DLG.’s best releases of the year thus far.

Mikalyn, "Prisoner"

MIKALYN, “Prisoner”

Mikalyn is a promising new pop singer from Guelph, Ontario (just west of Toronto) whose style seems to fall into the relatively new dream pop sub-genre. Her beautiful, poised tone is set to an atmospheric backdrop in “Prisoner” which tells the story about a relationship that is going nowhere, and you know that the only way to fix it is to end it. The hopeful message and soothing tone of the song sound fresh and “Prisoner” is a candidate for all of those morning playlists to help elevate your day.

DVBBS, JESSE JO STARK, “Breathe”

Even after more than 10 years in the music business, artists can still surprise with something most of us wouldn’t have expected from them. The brothers DVBBS (Alex and Chris, originally from Orangeville, Ontario) crashed the UK chart at #1 back in 2014 with Borgeous and Tinie Tempah on “Tsunami”, which opened doors for their dance music around the world, as well as for a steady stream of domestic pop radio hits, like last year’s “Summer Nights” (with Brandyn Burnette). “Breathe” is one of the darkest, eeriest-sounding tracks (just in time for Hallowe’en) I’ve heard in quite some time, perfect for night time at festivals. DVBBS really embrace early trance and techno as well as drum ‘n bass flourishes, with the potent, hypnotic, sometimes minimalist synths and an alluring vocal by L.A.’s Jesse Jo Stark, who is usually found in alternative rock settings. I enjoy it when artists take risks, so DVBBS, Jesse and Spinnin’ Records are to be commended for not letting a great song like “Breathe” gather dust. Club DJ’s will have fun with this one into the wee hours before patrons trek off to their favourite 24 hour diner for breakfast.

Miami’s Gt_ofice and Maryland’s sunshine-masked ALWZ SNNY saw their early summer bop “Every Thought of You” attain some key national dance radio airplay, which led them to play some shows together too.  They follow it up with “Feels Like Us”, and have brought frequent blog visitor Robbie Rosen into the fold. It’s an even better release with a singalong hook, an ode to beautiful summer sunsets and nights where everything about them reminds you of that special someone. Robbie knocks it out of the park with his warm vocal and the producers complement it with a joyous, classically-styled melody. Sometimes you just don’t need to mess with a fine song with needlessly frilly synth effects, and the straight-forward pop/house of “Feels Like Us” should continue to open more doors for these talented artists.

Jude York, "All My Friends Hate Me"

You’ve got to hand it to Australia’s Jude York for taking his initial bunch of alternative pop singles in wildly different directions, from the dreamy ballads “All I See Is Him” and “Mr. Porcelain” through to the knowing but fun “All My Friends Hate Me”. It’s a pop dance track that will appeal to fans of Jessie Ware and Troye Sivan – a perfect companion piece to Troye’s “Dance To This” – but with the affecting and sometimes theatrical vocal flair that we’ve grown to enjoy from Jude. Some dialogue is added to give it extra dimension and connection to his audience, but “All My Friends Hate Me” can probably stand tall as Jude York’s best release thus far.

Ultra Nate, Les Bisous, "Dangerous (So Dare Me)"

ULTRA NATE, LES BISOUS, “Dangerous (So Dare Me)”

Legendary American dance music singer Ultra Naté has been a continuing force in the genre years after her halcyon days which gifted us with anthems like “Free” and “Found a Cure”, and even found her on the pop charts with the cover of Gordon Lightfoot’s “If You Could Read My Mind” with Amber and Jocelyn Enriquez. “Dangerous (So Dare Me)” is dance music radio-ready and retools The Pointer Sisters’ 80’s hit “Dare Me” – a familiar place for Ultra Naté to revisit, since one of her biggest club hits was a cover of the Sisters’ “Automatic”. In any event, the punchy percussive and jazz-tinged house backdrop by French producers Les Bisous makes her sound just wonderful, and I’d highly recommend it to club DJ’s who want an alternative to Junior Jack’s early 2000’s wonky “Stupidisco”, another take on “Dare Me”. There is always an audience waiting to get down to fun and invested performances like this!

Surf Mesa, Griff Clawson, "Run"

Surf Mesa (aka 23 year old Powell Aguirre) is the latest dance producer to dabble in trance/techno synth sounds that seem to be in full comeback swing, with his latest track “Run” featuring L.A.-based go-to singer/songwriter Griff Clawson, known for his previous work with Arty and Matoma among others. It follows up Surf Mesa’s recent “City of Love”, a pop-oriented grower that attracted some national dance radio stations and got to #4 on the BILLCS Top 30, but which deserves more attention. While “Run” is infectious enough with its vocal hook, I would tend to pitch it more to dance clubs, who should be able to work with well with those lucid synths to keep their dancers on the floor. 

Daniel Richter, "Survive"

DANIEL RICHTER, “Survive”

Canada’s Daniel Richter, the former voice of hitmakers Eleven Past One, returns with the follow-up to his cathartic ballad “Forget You”, the spirited and reflective “Survive”. Daniel once again sounds in great form with thoughtful lyrics over a familiarly styled pop melody. The theme of remembering and standing by those who support you through tough times is bang on in these times when people need all of the love and understanding they can get. Daniel recently won a local Durham Music Award for his songwriting talents, so we can expect ongoing high quality releases from him.

Last year I introduced you to Utah-based Roseburg, an alternative rock quartet who hail from and proudly rep their hometown Roseburg, Oregon. From their new EP 2 In A Million, I bring you the energetic dis song “See You Never”. Recalling other similar songs by the likes of Paramore but say with inspiration via The Ramones, “See You Never” benefits from great vocals and tight musicianship in a tightly woven, short production. It’s top notch garage rock that makes you want to hear more from Roseburg.

ALEX SAMPSON, “Til The World Gets Sick Of Us”

Although he’s been known to make his social media following swoon with a ballad or two online, Canada’s 19 year old singer/songwriter Alex Sampson clearly also likes to rock out. His previous single, the anthemic Marianas Trench-esque “WANT YOU!” is riding at #16 on the BILLCS Top 30, and its vibrant video has over 300K spins on You Tube. “Til The World Gets Sick Of Us” is a similarly spun, quick anthem that recalls early Fall Out Boy and other bands from the same time like American Hi-Fi. But, with props to producer Dylan Rouda, you can hear Alex’s exceptional vocal tone throughout it all, and the rebellious theme of the song is infectious.

BILLCS Top 30 #676 – October 9/23

While this current streaming era reminds me of the early 1970’s, when record company radio promoters wanted a fast turnover of songs at AM radio to get more and more hits, it also reminds me of the early 2000’s in terms of this personal chart. The difference between 20 years ago and now for me is that I want songs to endure, instead of removing some of them hastily from the chart. While they don’t always make it into my Top 10, all of the songs are added to the chart with that potential in mind. But having 100+ favourites or so each year and keeping them all defined as such in my mind also seems to be an underlying goal amid the plethora of the music that I each week.

Marvel Riot and MOYA advance 11-8 with another 90’s retro house track “Want My Lovin'”.  It’s the first Top 10 entry for both artists.

Michael Medrano, "Disco Sleaze (Raw and Uncut)"

The Fastest Riser on the chart is Michael Medrano’s “Disco Sleaze” in its raw and uncut remix, which soars 17-9 and becomes Michael’s second Top 10 entry following late 2021’s “i don’t wanna talk about love”, which peaked at #5.

GATTUSO, "Unstoppable"

GATTUSO returns to the Top 10 with the rollicking “Unstoppable” moving up 12-10. It’s his second Top 10 entry following last year’s “Afterglow” (#8).

JRDN, "What Do I Got To Do"

The soulful voice of Toronto-based comeback kid JRDN is in full effect on his Canadian Top 40 radio hit “What Do I Got To Do”, which climbs 19-13.

John Dahlback, Davis Mallory, "Top of the World"

Be sure not to miss out on John Dahlbāck and Davis Mallory’s deep house collaboration “Top of The World”. This uplifting and insanely catchy track climbs 27-21.

Bright Light Bright Light, "Down To One"

The Highest Debut belongs to a huge BILLCS Top 30 regular, Bright Light Bright Light, with the carpe diem dance music energy behind “Down to One”, which arrives at #24. It’s BLx2’s 24th appearance on the chart (including two features with Final DJS) since his first entry in 2010, and he has accumulated 6 number ones. “Down to One” is easily one of my favourites from the last several years, and comes from his forthcoming 5th album.  Watch for the horror movie-themed video on Friday October 13 (of course)!

Throttle, helloworld, "Weightless Feeling"

The next debut at #25 is the poignant progressive electronica of “Weightless Feeling” by Australian producer Throttle and L.A. producer Helloworld. Both producers also sing on this track and sound amazing together. While it’s Helloworld’s first appearance on the chart, it’s Throttle’s fourth, but first since 2020. Throttle got to #1 in 2019 with “Dreamer”. “Weightless Feeling” also features a guitar cameo from the awesome San Holo.

GT_Ofice, JAYEM, Alix Robson, "Can't Deny"

“Can’t Deny” is the collaboration between Miami’s GT_ofice, NYC’s Jayem and British singer Alix Robson which premieres at #27. This powerful and fun dance track marks a second visit to the chart for GT_ofice, who charted last year with VASSY on “Tuff” (#11).

Pete Cho, "Fan of You"

Chicago’s Pete Cho is a former restauranteur whose attraction to the music world prompted him to leave the hospitality sector. His latest release, the pop/dance track “Fan Of You”, has a hook that can’t be denied and lands on the chart at #29.

Karen Harding, "Wrong Places"

From the new album Take Me Somewhere, Karen Harding gets a second concurrent chart entry with the edgy, darker dance track “Wrong Places” which bows at #30.  Her collaboration with Canada’s Felix Cartal, “Need Your Love”, also climbs 20-17. “Wrong Places” is Karen’s 9th entry on this chart since 2020.

BILLCS New Music Report – October 3/23 spotlighting new songs by @LSRCity, #LohraspKansara & #NormanAlexander, @VASSY, and @KarenHarding

I don’t generally go to many concerts in the colder months, so the only concert I have left scheduled for the rest of this year is Jessie Ware’s first show in Toronto in 9 years on October 23. If I travel to warmer climates then usually a show or two will happen, but I have nothing planned at this time. Otherwise my next show is in March for Gareth Emery’s LSR/CITY new concert laser experience (see first spotlighted song below)! I have missed Gareth the last two times he’s played Toronto, so I think this one will be quite special.

LRS/CITY, Annabel, "Like A Prayer"

LSR/CITY, ANNABEL, “Like A Prayer”

LSR/CITY is the new project launched by producer Gareth Emery to coincide with his upcoming mega-laser concert extravaganza of the same name. It’s kickstarted with a fast-paced trance cover of Madonna’s 1989 smash with a huge, dramatic arrangement that is offset by the soothing vocal by Annabel, whose voice gave us plenty of feels on Gareth’s “You’ll Be OK” (a 2020 BILLCS Top 30 #1). This refreshing redo of “Like a Prayer” does the original justice and trance music fans will revel in the complex layers of Gareth’s production. I can’t wait to see what kind of laser effects accompany this song when it’s played in concert in my city on March 9! Check out the extended visual mix by clicking on the above photo.

Lohrasp Kansara, Norman Alexander, "Follow Me"

LOHRASP KANSARA, NORMAN ALEXANDER, “Follow Me”

Although it didn’t become a bonafide dance club hit until 10 years later in a Full Intention remix, the original 1992 version of “Follow Me” by New Jersey R&B/dance outfit ALY-US left its imprint on the house music scene with its uplifting lyrics and melody, and even scored pockets of radio play. NYC dance producer Lohrasp Kansara puts a reverent, contemporary spin on “Follow Me”, long a personal favourite of mine (I have the original cassette single!), with a convincing and fresh vocal by Norman Alexander that matches Eddie Lewis’ original. Despite being revived several times over the last 20 years in different forms, in the hands of the right club DJ’s and promoters, this version of “Follow Me” could not only find its way to big clubs and festivals, but could also be embraced by dance music radio all over again.

VASSY, "Krazy"

VASSY, “Krazy”

Australia’s sensational VASSY returns with an anthemic track that has its sight on dance music radio domination again called “Krazy”. A familiar house music instrumental hook certainly helps tease the listener in, and VASSY’s trademark vocal belt kicks in within 30 seconds for the chorus. You’ll also be impressed by the rest of her vocals, which passionately let a story about overcoming obstacles unfold. While it might be a cathartic kind of song, it’s also loads of fun for the listener and club goer, and will undoubtedly please fans who have been waiting for more from VASSY.

Karen Harding, "Wild Wild Water"

KAREN HARDING, “Wild Wild Water”

Karen Harding’s debut album Take Me Somewhere is finally here, and it’s a generous 13 song package, nearly 10 years in the making, including her best known hits “Say Something” and “Undo My Heart” among the songs previously released, plus six new songs. The album was preceded by the alternative dance pop of “Wrong Places”, and “Wild Wild Water” finds Karen dabbling in drum ‘n bass territory. The arrangement gives her voice a workout like you really haven’t heard it before. The songs within the album reinforce Karen’s strength as a gifted songwriter, and they offer her voice in a variety of settings, whether as a deep house belter or a more conventional pop/dance artist. Like “Wrong Places”, “Wild Wild Water” is a highlight of the new songs that you’ll want to check out.

Windsor’s MELØ continues to show his versatility with each release, this time with the hopeful alternative synth pop ballad “Gone Forever”. It’s a heartfelt, straight-forward song that reminisces about a past love, but knowing that it’s long over, and time to move on.  The ear-catching layers of harmonies really give “Gone Forever” a huge choral lift. From dance pop to alternative rock, MELØ nicely comes full circle with “Gone Forever”.

Waiting For Smith, "White Light of Love"

You have to hand it to Harry Lloyd, the Netherlands-based British force behind Waiting For Smith, and how he manages to spread goodwill and love through his recent songs like the latest, “White Light of Love”, without even a hint of preaching. Written while on a trip to South Africa, the song makes you truly wonder what that white light feels like, and if you’ve ever really felt it before. It’s something only an individual knows, but whatever it is, Harry has a handle on it and why it’s out there. The gentle story-telling behind “White Light” set to an acoustic arrangement is captivating and those of you in the UK can catch Waiting For Smith on tour this month in a variety of cities (check out his IG for further info).

With the emotional pop of “It Takes A Fool To Remain Sane”, Italy’s Osvaldo Supino once again shows off his skills as an interpreter in his latest release. Some of you may know versions of this song by Sweden’s Cornelia Jakobs or Venezuela’s Omar Rudberg, but with his charming and thoughtful vocal, Osvaldo makes the song his own. “It Takes A Fool” is a breezy, bright slice of pop, and the arrangement and vocal give it a lovely sense of urgency.

After a three year break, it’s a big welcome back to Australian producer Latchmere (aka Shaun Galvin) with his new EP Fire In The Sky, from which I’m highlighting the title track. The song is a brisk mix of pop and deep house that in the aftermath of a love affair seems to reflect on when that love burned at its brightest. Latchmere once again provides his own vocals, which shift from intense to reminiscing. The production balances all of the elements, imagery and emotions which make “Fire In The Sky” memorable.

Does music make you happy? If not it should, and perhaps you may need to find something new to listen to. All the more reason to read this week’s BILLCS New Music Report and check out the eight songs in the pop, dance and alternative genres within to see if any of them tickles your fancy in any way. I’m lucky to have so many decades of familiar music at my disposal that I can shift gears any day and pick out songs that I’ll always enjoy. For those of you whose vocabulary of songs is still growing, I especially encourage you to break down barriers with your choices and develop your own unique repertoire of favourites.

Bright Light Bright Light, "Down To One"

BRIGHT LIGHT BRIGHT LIGHT, “Down To One”

NYC-based Bright Light Bright Light continues to mine an impeccable roster of pop/dance releases with “Down To One”. BLx2 (aka Wales-born Rod Thomas) is in splendid voice in this tale about attraction to another guy for whom he’d literally use up all but one of his feline nine lives to be with. It also fits into the positive adage about having one life, so be sure to live it. The synth work shimmers, the melody glimmers, and that all makes “Down To One” a Bright Light Bright Light song that you’ll have on repeat.

Pete Cho, "Fan of You"

PETE CHO, “Fan of You”

“Fan of You” is one of those rare songs that instantly creeps under your skin and stays there, thanks to a simple but effective hook that would resonate even more if performed in person. Chicago’s Pete Cho has crafted a warm and inviting pop release, which also features an uncredited rap two-third’s way through that fits like a glove, providing a bit of extra dimension to the song. “Fan of You” is quite different from the songs I’ve written about before either by or produced by Pete, and I’m all for following whatever path it takes him on.  

Marco Foster, "Movies"

MARCO FOSTER, “Movies”

Marco Foster is an NYC-based  indie singer/songwriter who I’ve written about before (albeit not for several years now) and seen in concert early on in his career. After releasing a self-titled album of standards two years ago which show off his skills as an interpreter, Marco is back with new original music that seems to find his calling with the ballad “Movies”. It’s a classically-structured pop song that looks at movies through a romantic fantasy lens. The highlights are Marco’s admirable vocal and the song’s simple but effortless-sounding arrangement. “Movies” is a delight for lovers of pop ballads – they don’t often write ’em like this these days – and the many talents of Marco Foster are sure to surface in future releases.

The Boy from the South, "Man Down"

THE BOY FROM THE SOUTH, “Man Down”

“Man Down” follows up the most recent whimsical delight from Spain’s The Boy From The South, “Amazing-Man”, which reached #3 on the BILLCS Top 30 in the spring. There’s something really refreshing about these two songs, how they combine folk-style story-telling with effervescent pop melodies and create light-hearted fun. The Boy from the South has already garnered attention in London and Mexico City for his live shows, and a video for “Man Down” is forthcoming. Thanks to The Boy’s engaging lyrics and personality, like “Amazing-Man”, “Man Down” is a grower that’s elevated into something larger than would normally meet the ear. He’s got a special niche that he’s riding that will broaden in time, so now is the perfect time to get to know the songs by The Boy From The South.

RYAN SHEPHERD, DARLA JADE, “Deep of the Night”

Of late, Canadian dance producer Ryan Shepherd has been crafting anthemic songs that tell a story or shape a scenario that are highly relatable to his club going audience. Witness “Hello Sunday”, which became a series of same-named Sunday afternoon small club events, and his current BILLCS Top 30 charting song “Move It (Control My Mind)”, which can easily become the centrepiece of a frenetic club set. A bright vocal by Darla Jade sets the stage for the excitement that ensues in “Deep of the Night”, which is a prime candidate to kick off a fun deep house set at 2 a.m. Ryan Shepherd continues to keep the groove steady in his second release for Sonny Fodera’s Solotoko label.

David Archuleta, "Afraid to Love"

I’m continue to enjoy hearing Utah’s David Archuleta reveling in a fun pop/dance style, of which “Afraid to Love” is his latest release. He continues to embrace it through matching his songs with fresh and enjoyable videos. The song is about being bold at the right time to embrace your love of another person, no matter what others say or think. I’ve been writing a lot about Swedish singer Darin, with whom David has a lot in common in terms of talent, style and joyous recent pop songs. As much as I enjoy what “Afraid to Love” has to offer, I’d love to see David and his team take a few cues from Darin, and allow his voice to soar more again in future songs. In the meantime, “Afraid to Love” and its video will certainly put a smile on your face, like when David is watching old clips of himself on TV in the video, allowing him to keep his past close but grab the future with gusto.

Lost Frequencies, Tom Gregory, "Dive"

LOST FREQUENCIES, TOM GREGORY, “Dive”

It’s been a while since a song by Belgium’s Lost Frequencies (aka Felix de Laet) has come to my attention, though his collaboration with Calum Scott a few years back, “Where Are You Now”, became a huge worldwide hit and has nary been out of the public ear. His latest collaboration with vocalist Tom Gregory (who sung on “Never Let Me Down” by VIZE, which reached #2 on the BILLCS Top 30 in 2020), called “Dive”, puts him back into deep house territory with an acoustic guitar melody blending with piano to create a satisfying backdrop for Tom’s familiar but engaging vocal. It’s hard to believe that Lost Frequencies first came to prominence with a remix of a country song “Are You With Me” back in 2015, which went to #1 throughout Europe and in the UK. “Dive” is a prime candidate for international dance music radio airplay so be sure to check it out.

Tyler Gunn, "A Million Miles"

TYLER GUNN, “A Million Miles”

Tyler Gunn is a new rock singer/songwriter from Toronto whose sound, like Steve Lacy and Black Pumas for example, is often an exception rather than a rule. “A Million Miles” is about confronting your feelings and making yourself “feel” – often a very individual thing to grasp and understand. The song has striking garage rock guitar sounds which recall early Lenny Kravitz, and percussion by veteran drummer Matt Johnson, who performed with the late great Jeff Buckley. Tyler’s voice gets a little buried in the soundscape, but “A Million Miles” eventually resonates with you through an intriguing young artist who clearly doesn’t want you to try and predict what he does next.

#BILLCSTop30 #675 – September 25/23

Will the Autumn match the preceding months for quality of music? There’s always an opportunity to listen for more new favourites. My concert-going for the rest of the year will be pretty selective given what’s already out there but you never know what surprises will unfold. This chart has a new #1 and two debuts.

Scoring his third #1 is Troye Sivan, from his upcoming album Something To Give Each Other, with the frenetic dance track “Rush” (above).  It follows 2018’s “My My My!” and 2019’s “i’m so tired” (with Lauv). And continuing to precede the album release, Troye has unveiled a new single and video, “Got Me Started” (below), which shows how much time and effort he’s investing in learning some complex dance moves that leave the wiggling hips in “My My My!” far behind.

Toronto’s Francesco Yates climbs 5-3 with the infectious title track of his recent EP, “Little Rockstar”.

“Blame Brett” by Toronto’s The Beaches moves up 8-6 as their latest album, Blame My Ex, is released.

MAX, JVKE, Bazzi, "Strings"

It’s now officially a Top 40 US radio hit! “Strings” by MAX, JVKE and Bazzi moves up 10-7.

Voyajer, "Come Around"

Two new entries to the Top 10 line up behind some pretty strong songs. Voyajer’s debut release “Come Around” (above) has made short work of the chart, climbing 12-9, and right behind is Steve Agnello & WH0’s dynamic 90’s-flavoured house track, “What You Need” (13-10). British masked producers WH0 have also released two songs, one of which is “Boogie Down” (also below) with fellow UK producer James Hurr, and takes its cue from Earth, Wind & Fire’s 1981 smash “Let’s Groove”.

Another UK-based release that gives me 90’s house music flashbacks thanks to the hook lifted from Felix’s “Don’t You Want Me” is “Want My Lovin'” by Marvel Riot and American belter MOYA, which rises 18-11.

Michael Medrano, "Disco Sleaze (Raw and Uncut)"

Visions of mirror balls will dance in your head when you listen and groove to Michael Medrano’s “raw and uncut” remix of “Disco Sleaze”, which climbs 24-17.

Felix Cartal, Karen Harding, "Need Your Love"

Friday September 29 is release day for Karen Harding’s debut album Take Me Somewhere! In the meantime be sure to check out her second collaboration with Vancouver’s Felix Cartal, “Need Your Love”, which rises 26-20.

Darin, "Satellit"

The Fastest Riser on the chart gives pause to why a Swedish-language hit can’t become the same worldwide. Darin’s “Satellit” is as catchy as anything he’s recorded in English these past few years in his new dance/pop era, and soars 29-21.  It’s from his album En Annan Jag (English translation: Another Me).

Alexander Stewart, "I Wish You Cheated"

Toronto’s Alexander Stewart makes his debut appearance on the chart with his affecting ballad “I Wish You Cheated”, which arrives at #26. Alexander is currently opening on the “House On A Hill” tour for South Korean sensation Eric Nam, and their show comes into Toronto on October 16 at HISTORY. You may know Alexander for his 2020 Top 20 Canadian radio hit “Backwards”.

John Dahlback, Davis Mallory, "Top of the World"

Also appearing on the chart for the first time are Swedish dance producer John Dahlbäck and American singer/songwriter Davis Mallory with their indie deep house collaboration “Top of the World” at #27. It’s a euphoric track that begins a little tentatively but once its groove kicks in you’re totally sold.

The Report is back after a week’s absence, during which time of course I’ve been listening to lots of new music to keep them coming to you in this blog post week after week.

GT_OFICE, JAYEM, ALIX ROBSON, “Can’t Deny”

“Can’t Deny” is a fierce end-of-summer piano-house banger brought to you courtesy of Miami producer GT_Ofice, New York producer JAYEM, and British vocalist Alix Robson. GT_Ofice continues to rise in the dance/pop world after Top 30 North American dance releases with VASSY (which went to #1 in the UK) and ALWZ SNNY. The musicianship in “Can’t Deny” is particularly strong with JAYEM and Alix also both musicians (piano, guitar) and producers.  I often enjoy my dance bangers tight and intense, and “Can’t Deny” delivers big time. This one is for club and festival DJ’s who want to keep the fast pace going and make their dancers really sweat.

Throttle, helloworld, "Weightless Feeling"

THROTTLE, helloworld, “Weightless Feeling”

Following up his intriguing take on Canadian performer EKKSTASY’s “I Walk This World All By Myself”, Australia’s Throttle (aka Robbie Bergin) continues to broaden his reach within the alternative electronic world with “Weightless Feeling”, in collaboration with L.A. producer helloworld. This is a far cry from early Throttle pop/dance remixes and his work with artists like Galantis and Oliver Heldens. It continues a more experimental path which he started with his 2019 EP Where U Are, which remains a personal favourite of mine, with “Dreamer” reaching #1 on the BILLCS Top 30. helloworld (aka Drew Wilken) has been producing and remixing for the last decade, though has only been releasing music as helloworld for the last three years and is part of the collective ASTRO. Both Throttle and helloworld seem to be on the same creative page with the sound they want to achieve, which in “Weightless Feeling” is joyous and liberating, and includes vocals by both producers. Add in a guitar solo and additional production by San Holo and “Weightless Feeling” should become a favourite for those who enjoy their electronica slightly left of centre.

Karen Harding, "Wrong Places"

KAREN HARDING, “Wrong Places”

UK house music queen Karen Harding is known for her unique, soulful vocal style and sound, which is often either powerful or sultry, whether singing solo or collaborating with producers like Digital Farm Animals, Felix Cartal, and Sammy Porter. It’s taken nearly 10 years, but Karen’s debut album Take Me Somewhere arrives on September 29, and “Wrong Places” is the first taste of that album, which will also include many of her best singles. If you don’t already know, Karen co-writes almost all of her songs (as well as those for others, too) and that gives her a special status in the dance music world. “Wrong Places” veers a bit into the alternative pop realm while still being a dance bop. Karen provides an edgy vocal which suits this darker song well. It’s a bit risky but immensely enjoyable for dance music lovers, and leaves us to ponder about other new songs which will be included in the album.

Manila Killa, MYRNE, RUNN, "Center of the World"

MANILA KILLA, MYRNE, RUNN, “Center of the World”

“Center of the World” is another dance track that is loaded with rich talent – frequent visitor to this blog and American producer of Filipino heritage Manila Killa, Singapore’s enduring producer MYRNE, and L.A.-based vocalist RUNN. This release marks a slight shift in direction for all three performers, in a trance-flavoured deep house track enriched with shifting moods led by exceptional synth work that also showcases RUNN’s softer vocal breaks. Despite the song’s dark and adventurous overtones, club goers will have fun with it when mixed with similar songs from the Anjunabeats roster or Above & Beyond.

Two big talents reunite – Spencer Ludwig was the original trumpeter for Capital Cities who went on to a solo career, winning a Latin Grammy for his work with Colombian performer Fonseca a few years back. Spencer and Capital Cities work some breezy electronic pop magic again with “Summertime with U” that highlights slick production and synth work, as well as a refreshing trumpet solo. While “Summertime with U” doesn’t really offer anything new, you can feel the enthusiasm and good vibes, and that all goes a long way.

Max Ehrich, "Backroads"

MAX EHRICH, “Backroads”

Max Ehrich is a name you might not associate with music, but you probably know from the acting world or from his engaging Instagram posts which also regularly show off his toned physique. The New Jersey-born talent, was 4 times Emmy-nominated for his role of Fenmore Baldwin on TV’s “The Young & The Restless”, and recently played the lead role in the film “Southern Gospel”. Max is also a dancer and has released other music but “Backroads” is his first in three years and marks a fresh start. It’s an R&B/hip hop flavoured track that will draw in fans of Justin Bieber or Justin Timberlake, with an easy-going rhythm and an alluring story. Even with some effects, you can hear the quality and natural ability in his voice, so this is no one-off. “Backroads” is good-natured, solid pop release that shows promise.

Autopilot, "Unwound"

AUTOPILOT, “Unwound”

Autopilot is a three-piece alternative rock outfit from Saskatchewan, whose sound is broad enough to appeal to fans of Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nickelback, Arkells, and Monowhales, and everything in-between. They’ve found their footing and tight sound through frequent touring, and are about to release their first album  in five years. It’s preceded by “Unwound”, which is a rousing, radio-friendly, anthemic rocker that’s a good introduction to anyone who hasn’t heard their music before. It follows up three singles which have received positive reaction from American radio stations. Featuring kick-ass drumming and urgent vocals, Autopilot delivers the rock ‘n roll goods that most of us enjoy in a live show, so watch for tour dates in a city near you.

JESSA, “Sleep with Boys”

Jessa is a new talent currently based in L.A. who has released her debut alt.pop single, “Sleep with Boys”. The lyrics put the protagonist in a love-hate relationship with herself, questioning why she does things which only lead to heartbreak. Fans of Olivia Rodrigo and Jessie Reyez will dig Jessa’s voice, and the clever melody is an affecting grower which will make you empathize with the situation. “Sleep with Boys” is co-written and produced by Pete Cho and college and alternative radio stations should latch onto it easily.
