#BILLCSNewMusicReport – April 19/23 spotlighting songs by @JonasBlue & RANI, Sophia Habib & The Cloud Orchestra, @Meduzamusic & @PoppyBask @FrancescoYates

On the topic of AI (artificial intelligence) in the music industry…

In the coming weeks, there will be a lot of discussion in the music industry about AI and how it is currently being used. Right now there are no boundaries, so some producers are using it as an opportunity to flood streaming platforms with prefab releases by fake artists in their attempts to make big bucks.

I think this will soon all come crashing down, as platforms add in checks and balances. I do wonder about You Tube, because this clearly doesn’t violate their current policies and could soon affect them greater than they imagined. I think if AI is used properly and some governance is established, then it will undoubtedly be amazingly useful. But to take advantage of it like a new toy is not what the better-than-average music listener wants or needs.

I urge the music industry and all of the platforms to move swiftly with those checks and balances, and leave the toying around to those bedroom producers that have the time for it. Humans for the win!

*********************

Among the other features in the Report, you can check out my pick of the week, along with one from the host of “Top 40 Timeline”, “Big Daddy” Russ Horton, plus Hunter Wilbur’s “Bop of the Week”.  “The Musicman” James Rogers has his Classic Five pop hits feature, which this week runs the gamut through the 1980’s.  And you’ll also see what songs debuted on the BILLCS Top 30 from 2018 to 2022 too!

The BILLCS New Music Report is a work-in-progress and I welcome your suggestions so feel free to contact me @billcs on Twitter @thebillcs on Instagram or @BILLCSMusicProjects on Facebook.

SPOTLIGHTING

Jonas Blue featuring Rani, "Finally"

JONAS BLUE, RANI, “Finally”

As is becoming more frequent these days, “Finally” is a new original by UK dance producer Jonas Blue that is written around a familiar song excerpt from the past. The original source is from American singer Harvey Mason’s 1979 R&B/dance release “Groovin’ You”, but the dance community and most of the pop world will recognize it as the hook from Gusto’s 1996 smash – except in the US – “Disco’s Revenge”. But as is the case with exceptional production, that hook is just the icing on the cake as the original song beautifully sung by Rani can easily stand on its own. “Finally” should have no problem finding its way up the national dance radio charts and getting it on in clubs for the rest of the year.

Sophia Habib & The Cloud Orchestra, "Lifeline" (live)

SOPHIA HABIB, THE CLOUD ORCHESTRA, “Lifeline” (live)

If you enjoy your contemporary electronic pop mixed with a real orchestra, then lend your ears to Sophia Habib’s original song “Lifeline”. Yes, this is a live recording which you can witness in its video above, and you know when a singer sounds this good that she can pretty well write her own ticket for whatever kind of record she wants to record. Sophia is a Netherlands-based vocalist who studied at the Rotterdam Conservatory of Music.  Her off-the-floor vocal here is pristine, and the first song to pop into my head for a comparison was Beyoncé’s “Dangerously In Love” and her ballads from that era. Then along came thoughts of Kelly Clarkson, Tori Kelly and others who have a lot of power in their voices, but can easily switch to softer and sometimes suspenseful singing. “Lifeline” is an unapologetic story about looking for love and not needing anyone’s approval. Its candor is very inviting and Sophia Habib clearly has much more to offer.

Meduza featuring Poppy Baskcomb, "Upside Down"

MEDUZA, POPPY BASKCOMB, “Upside Down”

Italy’s Grammy-nominated production trio Meduza steers away from their pop-house revelations for “Upside Down” in partnership with UK singer/songwriter Poppy Baskcomb, who has recently worked with Tiësto, Joel Corry, and Jess Bays among others. “Upside Down” is vibrant and fresh techno-house whose sharp and infectious synths will vibrate right through you. Poppy’s vocal basks in the confusion of the moment, and it will all work together marvelously late at night under the bright dance floor lights.

Francesco Yates, "Thunderbomb"

FRANCESCO YATES, “Thunderbomb”

With guitar ablaze again after the immensely enjoyable “Jimi”, one of my 10 faves of 2022, Toronto’s uber-talented Francesco Yates returns with another edgier song than previous releases, the appropriately and ferociously titled “Thunderbomb”. This new one will certainly sound fab in concert as Francesco rips through his impressive guitar work, and fans who enjoy anyone from The Jonas Brothers through to Bryan Adams will get a kick out of it. It’s obviously inspired by the likes of Prince, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and of course Mr. Hendrix, so be sure to crank “Thunderbomb” up to 11.

FEATURING

Alok & Solardo, "Over Again"

ALOK, SOLARDO, “Over Again”

Following up his recent high-powered collaboration with James Arthur, “Work With My Love”, Brazil’s Alok continues with a subtler house track, “Over Again”, in collaboration with UK producers Solardo, fresh off of their fan favourite from last year with Tiēsto, “I Can’t Wait”. Although “Over Again” isn’t a long song, I enjoy how it takes its time to get where it needs to go. The uncredited male vocal is supremely showcased in the first part of the song to help momentum build, and in the second part, it provides a much darker edge to “Over Again” which will simply slay club goers in the middle of a set.

Benjamin Russell, "Frontier"

BENJAMIN RUSSELL, “Frontier”

Because the video is available, you’re getting an advance taste of Montreal multi-talent Benjamin Russell’s new album Frontier, due on April 26 in the form of the title track. Frontier follows up his first release of 2023, Something In F Minor with fellow producer and musician Rob Stuart. And while electronics form the backdrop of “Frontier”, its fanciful story-telling vocal style will appeal to folk music fans too. “Frontier” actually revisits a song Benjamin released in 1996, and what’s appealing lyrically is the wonder in the protagonist’s “quest” for friendship and love. “Frontier” is ultimately a song that makes you feel good about yourself, and that your hopes, dreams and visions should not be ignored, particularly if eventually you wish to act on them.

Mark Lee, "Love To Be Loved"

MARK LEE, “Love To Be Loved”

Formerly of the Grammy Award winning band Third Day, Georgia’s Mark Lee is back with a gentle new original called “Love To Be Loved”, which might give you all kinds of misplaced déjà vu. I say “misplaced” because if it was released in the early 1980’s, the song would be keeping some great company in similar sounding smashes of the day by the likes of Dan Fogelberg, Paul Davis, or Christopher Cross. And that’s not a bad thing at all because Mark recovers a somewhat lost but successful pop sound and updates it in a solid new song. You’ll appreciate the genuine lyrics in “Love To Be Loved” about never ending love which fit like a glove over a chord progression which Mark says was waiting years for the right lyric.

K3SS & Sally Oh, "Please Don't Lie"

K3SS, SALLY OH, “Please Don’t Lie”

“Please Don’t Lie” is an atmospheric, often taut mix of deep house and trance, which is the latest release for up-and-coming San Diego producer K3SS. American-Asian singer Sally Oh provides a versatile vocal that starts as a simple request of the title words, but as the song develops the tone becomes more directive – as in “if you keep lying, you’ll lose me”. The arrangement is full of stop and go that totally works, and deep house fans will be mighty happy with all of the big bassy beats.

#BILLCSNewMusicReport – April 12/23 spotlighting songs by @TheDiscoFries & @EchePalante @TheFatRat & @Shiahsings @TELYKast & @GeorgiaKu #BenEllis

In these blog posts lately, I seem to be zeroing in on upbeat, fun tracks, and seven out of the eight varied songs in this week’s Report are just that, while one creatively covers a well-established country-pop song in a way you’d be hard pressed to anticipate.

Among the other features in the Report, you can check out my pick of the week, along with one from the host of “Top 40 Timeline”, “Big Daddy” Russ Horton, plus Hunter Wilbur’s “Bop of the Week”.  “The Musicman” James Rogers has his Classic Five pop hits feature, focusing in on some big hits from 1971 this time. Plus I have my #1 song on the BILLCS Top 30 and the Fastest Riser on the chart.

The BILLCS New Music Report is a work-in-progress and I welcome your suggestions so feel free to contact me @billcs on Twitter @thebillcs on Instagram or @BILLCSMusicProjects on Facebook.

SPOTLIGHTING

The Disco Fries & Eche Palante, "Give Me Your Soul"

THE DISCO FRIES, ECHE PALANTE, “Give Me Your Soul”

The Disco Fries let the music do the talking and create an anthemic dance track around the words in its title, “Give Me Your Soul”. This one’s guaranteed to make you bounce and should be an instant festival hit this spring and summer. Nick and Danny have partnered this time with Miami producer Eche Palante, who has had a number of successes with remixes as well releases through Spinnin’ and Universal in the last decade or so. A few years back he tapped into some thoughtful and memorable house tracks in “The Lonely” and “Midnight”. So “Give Me Your Soul” is a well-rounded collaboration, and I would pitch it to fans of Showtek and Afrojack.

TheFatRat feat. Shiah Maisel, "Out Of The Rain"

THEFATRAT, SHIAH MAISEL, “Out of the Rain”

German electronic producer TheFatRat creates some of the most imaginative music for gaming fans, as well as for dance music lovers who enjoy generally upbeat, fun and compelling songs. “Out of the Rain” is an intriguing collaboration with NYC vocalist Shiah Maisel which adds a light Caribbean flavour to the rhythm. The lyrics tell a story of a world besieged by rain and those who are determined to leave it for a brighter future, so it sounds like it might be the start of a series of conceptual songs (and maybe videos) from TheFatRat. “Out of the Rain” is one of his best recent releases that should find favour with electronic music lovers well outside of his fanbase.

TELYKast & Georgia Ku, "You Got Me"

TELYKAST, GEORGIA KU, “You Got Me”

As more and more dance songs draw increasingly from melodic house of the early 2010’s, you can always count on L.A. production trio TELYKast to create something mighty enjoyable without sounding derivative. Teaming up this time with go-to dance vocalist and songwriter Georgia Ku, “You Got Me” oozes positivity and will find favour especially with lovebirds on the dance floor. After their huge breakthrough early last year with “Unbreakable” (a BILLCS Top 30 #1), TELYKast continues to focus on making high quality productions and collaborations which have helped them secure big concert and festival gigs. I’ll be very happy with more like “You Got Me”, please!

Ben Ellis, "Ed's House"

BEN ELLIS, “Ed’s House”

Welsh singer/songwriter Ben Ellis has only released a handful of singles, but “Ed’s House”, as recommended in the Report last week by my music buddy Hunter Wilbur, is definitely is ticket to the next level. It’s a fun bop-and-a-half that recalls house parties as a teenager, with some interesting pop culture references – I think Wheatus’ “Teenage Dirtbag” might have been released before Ben was born, though it fits well in the story! Ben and his mates who wrote the song definitely have a way with words and the melody is light-hearted with the right kind of feel-good vibe. Like other young UK artists such as Alfie Templeman, Ben Ellis has zeroed in on a “sound” early and I think it will take him far.

FEATURING

Angel X Star, "Jolene"

ANGEL X STAR, “Jolene”

Angel X Star is a brother-sister duo from Hertfordshire, England and they’ve done what many might feel is unthinkable, and turned Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” inside out and sideways – well somewhat anyway. But in doing so, their rendition works quite well as a bouncy Afro R&B track with the message of heartbreak ever-present, but knowing that the root of heartbreak is love. Angel X Star’s version of “Jolene” gets better with each listen, when you realize they are not messing with the song at all but providing an alternate interpretation. Both Angel and Star have fine voices and the uncomplicated production provides an earthy backdrop where much can be left to your imagination.

PLS&TY & Lost Boy, "Party in My Head"

PLS&TY, LOST BOY, “Party In My Head”

Summer has arrived early with the cheery feels of “Party In My Head”, which is the first new release in two years for L.A.-based, Florida-born dance producer PLS&TY. And he’s brought along fellow L.A.-based vocalist/songwriter Lost Boy, who provides a fun pop vocal to carry the house rhythms of the track. “Party in My Head” features slick production and its good-natured, carefree energy reminds me of dance music from about eight years ago, particularly when Justin Bieber released his Justified album and collaborated with Diplo and Skrillex, which is a sound I think dance music lovers currently miss. The record is a fine welcome back for PLS&TY and I’ll welcome another collaboration with Lost Boy anytime.

D'Amico & Valax feat. Fayzone, "Mirage of My Heart"

D’AMICO & VALAX, FAYZONE, “Mirage of My Heart”

Italian dance production team D’Amico & Valax are on a roll with their latest melodic deep house track, “Mirage of My Heart”. American singer/songwriter Fayzone has a boy-next-door voice that works well in this song, particularly as it goes along. The seductive mystery of the song also becomes more apparent as the production becomes increasingly layered with synths and effects. “Mirage of My Heart” will fit in nicely on playlists next to songs by Meduza, Gryffin and more.

Jake Huffman, "Babe"

JAKE HUFFMAN, “Babe”

Following up his single release from earlier this year which I wrote about called “Martyr”, Connecticut musician Jake Huffman returns with a song that will have you humming or toe-tapping called “Babe”. Jake wrote the song with intentions of creating a dark romance inspired by horror and sci-fi movie. And while the song has elements of that, particularly at the start, its lyrics are broad enough to fit a myriad of situations. “Babe” does have an undeniably catchy chorus though which will leave the song firmly planted in your head.

BILLCS Top 30 #1 SONG

Cerrone & Mercer featuring Brendan Reilly - The Only One

“The Only One” by Cerrone & Mercer featuring Brendan Reilly

BILLCS Top30 FASTEST RISER

Jason Mraz, "I Feel Like Dancing"

“I Feel Like Dancing” by Jason Mraz (20-5)

#BILLCSTop30 #663 – April 10/23

After a significant change-up at the top of the chart two weeks ago, the songs at the top settle in, as a new groundswell of activity forms further down. And I really fought a battle with myself with some of the songs that debuted this week, so I suspect that the ones that didn’t will follow suit in two weeks.

REMINDER: As with the BILLCS  New Music Report, I’m now embedding the video link in the artwork for the song or the artist, which hopefully will allow the blog page to load faster and smoothly.  So you now have to click on the photos above the write up to hear the song or watch the video. Let me know how it works for you! I am also using Alt Text where possible to assist readers with visual impairments.

The best places to communicate with me continue to be Twitter @billcs or Instagram @thebillcs or Facebook @BILLCSMusicProjects. Follow this blog using the “Follow” button at the bottom of the home page.

Check out my ONLINE RADIO SHOWS below too as they are increasingly tied in with this blog.  As most of you know by know, I host 3 online radio shows – The Big 20 and two iterations of Your Weekend New Music Mix – and produce 2 online radio segments – my new music and retro picks of the week – that are all pre-recorded.

Cerrone & Mercer featuring Brendan Reilly - The Only One

Sitting comfortably at #1 for a second time is “The Only One” by the comeback kid himself, 70’s disco producer, with fellow French producer Mercer and UK vocalist Brendan Reilly, from the album Cerrone By Cerrone. Long may Cerrone continue to make music! At 70 years old, I do believe he is the second oldest artist to reach #1 on this chart. Bettye LaVette, at 76 last year, technically holds that record with “The Last Goodbye” with Odesza, though she was a teenager when she recorded her original “Let Me Down Easy” in 1965.

Frank Walker featuring Ella Henderson, "I Go Dancing"

“I Go Dancing” by Frank Walker and Ella Henderson holds tight at #4, above. Frank has a new one out now, teaming up with Stephen Puth again, for “Waiting”, below.

Frank Walker & Stephen Puth, "Waiting"

“I Feel Like Dancing” by Jason Mraz (above) puts the kapow in the chart this week by soaring 20-5 as the Fastest Riser for a second chart in a row, throwing it immediately into contention for #1 along with the four songs above it. Jason also has another preview of his upcoming album Mystical Magical Rhythmical Radical Ride available called “You Might Like It”, check it out below. “I Feel Like Dancing” is Jason’s 5th Top 5 entry.

Jason Mraz, "You Might Like It"Dabin & Kai Wachi featuring Lo Spirit - Hollow

Also landing in the Top 10 are two very different songs back to back. The progressive melodic electronic track “Hollow” (above) by Dabin, Kai Wachi and Lø Spirit climbs 13-9, becoming Dabin’s second Top 10 entry. And UK-born artist Waiting For Smith’s gentle, feel-good track “Heal” (below) rises 12-10.

Waiting For Smith, "Heal"

The Boy From The South, "Amazing-Man"

In any other week it would have been the Fastest Riser, but Spain’s The Boy From The South is Top 10 bound with the jaunty “Amazing-Man”, which vaults 25-13.

Boy Aries, "Drive"

Toronto duo Boy Aries breaks loose of the lower reaches of the chart and their song “Drive” and its insanely catchy verse “turn the car around” leap 22-15.

St Humain, "Memento"

“Memento” by St Humain is another track with a strong melodic hook and it climbs 27-21, from his new EP Metadramatic.

JIMIN, "Like Crazy (English version)"

For the next several weeks I’ll continue to rave about JIMIN’s track “Like Crazy”, whose English version deservedly debuted at #1 last week on the Billboard Hot 100.  I’m certainly wasting no time putting it on my chart at #22. JIMIN’s parent group BTS had one entry on this chart with “DNA” back in 2018, while fellow band member SUGA was featured on MAX’s “Blueberry Eyes” in late 2020. Both of the latter songs reached #13. “Like Crazy” really deserves to be a Top 40 radio hit too.

James Bay, "Brilliant Still"

Returning to the chart for a fourth appearance is UK singer/songwriter James Bay with a track from his new album Leap called “Brilliant Still” at #24. It’s a heartfelt song about helping out someone close when they need it. The album has had an inauspicious debut but James Bay fans are certainly digging it. All of James’ previous entries on this chart have reached the Top 10, with 2018’s “Pink Lemonade” getting to #2.

Loreen, "Tattoo"

Lorine Talhaoui, the Swedish singer otherwise known as Loreen, has had a nearly 20 year career in her native country, which culminated in her winning EuroVision in 2012 with the still-vibrant “Euphoria”. Two albums and several awards later, and Loreen won Sweden’s Melodifestivalen contest again in March to represent her country at EuroVision for a second time. The song is “Tattoo”, with its wonderful taut and dramatic arrangement that showcases Loreen’s voice, and it arrives at #27.

Jay Bird, "All Night Long"

Jay Bird returns to the chart for a fourth appearance with the fun deep house party track “All Night Long”, which debuts at #29. Fans of the genre who enjoy Fisher, Hugel, John Summit or Acraze will totally dig this one. Jay Bird’s last chart entry, “Float”, peaked at #3 in early 2022.

#BILLCSNewMusicReport – April 5/23 spotlighting new music by #JIMIN @TheMarshallmix @SleepyBenjamin @Matomaofficial & H. Kenneth @kenfleet @itsAMNES & @ArtemisxOrion

JIMIN, "Like Crazy (English version)"

I don’t normally write about huge name stars or huge records, but I don’t want to miss saying something about the out-of-the-box success of JIMIN’s “Like Crazy” (English version). For those of you not familiar with him, he’s one of the seven members of BTS, who all seem to be creating their own solo work right now. JIMIN’s “Like Crazy” is simply a beautiful pop song with a great vocal, and it’s completely unlike the songs of BTS. This deservedly debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and JIMIN is the first South Korean solo act to do so.  Radio should jump all over it within the next few weeks. Check it out above.

Among the other features, you can check out my pick of the week, along with one from the host of “Top 40 Timeline”, “Big Daddy” Russ Horton, plus Hunter Wilbur’s “Bop of the Week”.  “The Musicman” James Rogers has his Classic Five pop hits feature, citing five going back to 1972/1973 for this bunch. Plus I have the songs that were at the top of the BILLCS Top 30 for each of these past 25 years!

The BILLCS New Music Report is a work-in-progress and I welcome your suggestions so feel free to contact me @billcs on Twitter @thebillcs on Instagram or @BILLCSMusicProjects on Facebook.

SPOTLIGHTING

Amanda Marshall, "I Hope She Cheats"

AMANDA MARSHALL, “I Hope She Cheats”

Many years of trying to get out of deals with your record label and your management had to be so self-defeating that you would never want to record new music again. Fortunately that’s not the case with Amanda Marshall, who returns with new music for the first time in over 20 years for Coalition Music, with her long-awaited fourth album on the way called Heavy Lifting, which has been in progress for the last 10 years. Her new single is a cover of a song by ex-Floetry member Marsha Ambrosius called “I Hope She Cheats”, whose original title is “I Hope She Cheats on You with a Basketball Player”. And it’s like time stood still in the music world for those 20+ years, with Amanda sounding in great form, invested and compelling in her soulful interpretation. “I Hope She Cheats”, with its forthright and biting contemporary message, should be a no brainer for Adult Top 40 radio, since her many fans (judging from social media reaction) have missed her, and she can continue make her presence as one of Canada’s finest vocalists. A Canadian tour has also been announced, so 2023 could indeed be Amanda Marshall’s year.

Sleepy Benjamin, "Stuck"

SLEEPY BENJAMIN, “Stuck”

I’ve got to hand it to Australia’s Ben Beamish for putting a lot of personal mental health cards on the table with his new release under his Sleepy Benjamin moniker called “Stuck”. The song seems to be rooted in a folk-storytelling mood, which gives it a whimsical feel as in recent releases that I’ve enjoyed by Jason Mraz and The Boy From The South. So the melody makes the song really easy to groove along to, while some of the more direct lyrics get to stand out or make their points clear and Ben sings one of his best vocals. It’s not easy for anyone to deal with ongoing issues often outside of their control every day, and the song could be quite helpful. Sleepy Benjamin’s “Stuck” is out there to let those affected know through song that you’re not alone, plus that it’s one cool song which even features some lyrics sung in Japanese (Sleepy Benjamin is set to play in Japan throughout May).

Matoma, H. Kenneth, "Deeper"

MATOMA, H. KENNETH, “Deeper”

Coming off of a very successful several months of touring throughout North America, Norway’s Matoma follows up his smashing house track “The Power” with the soulful and edgy “Deeper”, featuring vocals by co-writer, Nashville’s H. Kenneth. It’s a worthy follow up to “The Power”, with a similar, taut arrangement but H. Kenneth’s soaring and urgent vocal turns it into something equally special. You can feel the festival and late night club vibes just oozing from “Deeper”, which continues a series of terrific releases from Matoma.

AMNES, artemis orion, "Stamina"

AMNES, artemis orion, “Stamina”

“Stamina” makes a great case for creating a song that would be called “future house” in these days where that style isn’t necessarily at the tip of people’s tongues. This invigorating song (as the title suggests) is brought to you by Belgian producer AMNES (also a part of the production collective Hooders) and L.A. singer/songwriter artemis orion, a new name on the scene who has already got over 10 million streams with just a handful of pop/electronic releases. “Stamina” straddles the edge of progressive electronic music with interesting synth effects but quickly comes back into full dance mode with walloping, bouncing house rhythms. The song will be included in AMNES’ upcoming debut EP.

FEATURING

ALTÉGO, "Bling Bling"ALTÉGO, “Bling Bling”

Those zany British twin DJ’s of boundless energy, ALTÉGO, are back with the short but fun “Bling Bling”. Riding the current trend of producers having lyrics put to familiar instrumental tracks – usually their own, but ALTÉGO are still new, so… – the lads (Lukas and Michael Fernandes-Pendse) take some liberty with the hook from 80’s smash “Axel F” (from “Beverly Hills Cop”), add a solid uncredited female vocalist and new lyrics around it, and BOOM it’s stuck in your ears! What’s best is that the production isn’t overdone with effects, allowing that instrumental hook to be the focal point, to the general amusement of those not young enough to remember or recognize it. With release by Arista/Sony, you may just be hearing “Bling Bling” all summer long.

Martin Luke Brown, "**it gets better"

MARTIN LUKE BROWN, “**it gets better”

Leicester-born Martin Luke Brown returned to the recording scene last Fall with the soulful and gritty “grateful”. He has a new EP coming in May called “damn, look at the view!”, which sounds like it could be a lot of fun if new single “**it gets better” is any indication. It’s taken a few years of being away from performing and concentrating on songwriting – he co-wrote “134340” with alt.pop favourite Orla Gartland for BTS’ Love Yourself: Tear album, and has co-writes with Yungblud and Galantis coming this year too – for him to find his groove again, and “**it gets better” finds him coming back on a high note. It’s no-nonsense pop/rock – guitar, bass, keys, drums – that takes a Coldplay-ish sound and scales it back a few notches. Plus, the song is guaranteed to put you in a great mood, and we need much more of that in 2023!

JJ Braves, "The High Dive"

JJ BRAVES, “The High Dive”

JJ Braves records pop/rock music that are heavily inspired by songs of the 80’s and 90’s. The great thing is that he doesn’t sound like anyone in particular, though artists like Bon Jovi, Van Halen, and Kenny Loggins come to mind. “The High Dive” is about the need to getaway when you’re spinning your wheels. Though the song is spawned by the difficulties musicians face in the industry, its urgency in its message is universal – to do what you need to do to support your well-being. “The High Dive” is solid and JJ’s vocals are personable and have an authenticity that will grab you at key points in the song.

bexx, "Stupid"

bexx, “Stupid”

bexx is a new British singer (aka Becky Pinnington) with an energetic electronic pop sound that would fit right alongside songs by one of her inspirations, Carly Rae Jepsen. She takes on a lover who doesn’t miss her in “Stupid”, which conveys many of the thoughts that we all have when we’ve encountered this kind of situation – suddenly everything about them is just “stupid”. The song comes from bexx’s new EP Sucker, which is full of anti-love songs that will appeal greatly to those who are tired of getting into a rut while dating. “Stupid” is refreshing and upfront, which will make you want to hear more from bexx.

#BILLCSNewMusicReport – March 29/23 spotlighting @imDanielRichter @DJMirkoB @Frankmusik @EminEMINZADA @OwlCity

In this edition of the report, I have reviews of eight independently released new songs that you should get to know, it’s a pretty unique bunch. And in a bit of a change of pace, online radio announcer Hunter J. Wilbur is a huge Owl City fan, and has his say about the artist’s first album in five years called Coco Moon, in place of his regular Bop of the Week.

Among the other features, you can check out my pick of the week, along with one from the host of “Top 40 Timeline”, “Big Daddy” Russ Horton.  “The Musicman” James Rogers has his Classic Five pop hits feature, citing five big Canadian hits that you should hear. And that’s all that could fit this week!

The BILLCS New Music Report is a work-in-progress and I welcome your suggestions so feel free to contact me @billcs on Twitter @thebillcs on Instagram or @BILLCSMusicProjects on Facebook.

SPOTLIGHTING

Daniel Richter, "Forget You"

DANIEL RICHTER, “Forget You”

Nope, it’s not a Cee-Lo Green cover, folks. “Forget You” is an original comeback single of sorts for Daniel Richter, previously the voice of Canadian pop/rock group Eleven Past One. In the last decade, the quartet had a smash Canadian radio hit with “The World Is Ours”, and toured extensively over the subsequent years, which also resulted in steady radio play for songs like “I’m Ready” and “Tonight’s The Night”, as well as an EP, also called The World Is Ours. Daniel’s been recording and performing under the name VALDII these past few years which has honed his sound as a solo artist, and “Forget You” will make you instantly remember that powerful voice from his Eleven Past One days. It’s a potent, heartwrenching song to which we can all relate when we can’t come to terms with loss of some kind. The chorus is magnetic, and the production, with Highcard’s Ben Zamora (who also co-wrote the song) is tight. “Forget You” is a welcome return for Daniel, rightly under his own name, and certainly could attract Top 40 attention.

DJ Mirko B, "Sun Freezes Cold"

DJ MIRKO B, “Sun Freezes Cold”

Italy’s DJ Mirko B returns with a song a little more out of the ordinary than recent past releases. “Sun Freezes Cold” is an edgy but taut rock-flavoured deep house track that stands out for all the right reasons. The song has intriguing lyrics, a versatile uncredited male vocal, and a driving, hard-hitting rhythm in a creative, multi-layered production. Major props to Mirko for making “Sun Freezes Cold” a risky and memorable release, which continues to show how diverse he can be with his productions. Some remixes could help show the different sides of this song too.

Frankmusik, "Remains"

FRANKMUSIK, “Remains”

With “Remains”, Frankmusik takes us back to a song he created in 2007, before I had even listened to his music. It’s a playful song about trying to make change while still wanting things to remain the same, and living in the moment. The wilder part of the mix of “Remains” , loaded with cool synth effects, reminds me of some of my favourite, frenetic Frankmusik songs such as “Captain”, while he always brings down the mix to clearly make his points understood. “Remains” is a thoughtful, fun bop with a new sheen of production that serves it well.

EMINZADA, "Aries Soulmate"

EMINZADA, “Aries Soulmate”

Following some highly imaginative and thought-provoking tracks, particularly “Bloodline” and the compelling “Sociopath”, Azerbaijan-born, UK-based singer/songwriter EMINZADA has released a six song EP called Don’t Tell My Mother. It’s about being in control of your own artistic destiny, stepping further away from your comfort zone. In the songs within, EMINZADA has pressed together layers and layers of instrumentation and cultural influences to create a unique and highly complex package. “Aries Soulmate” focuses on his love of astrology and how two Aries individuals can make a relationship work providing they find balance and respect. A dreamy, sometimes carefree-sounding arrangement is countered with a deep subject matter. There’s a lot in the music of EMINZADA for you to enjoy, and your utmost attention is required.

EMINZADA plays The Tabernacle in Notting Hill, London, England accompanied by the Berlin Metropolitan Orchestra, on Saturday April 8.

FEATURING

Bright Light Bright Light, "Sweet Release"

BRIGHT LIGHT BRIGHT LIGHT, “Sweet Release”

Rod Thomas, aka New York City-based Welsh artist BLx2, is back with his first release of the year, an optimistic and bubbly slice of synth pop called “Sweet Release”. It’s about being empowered by someone when you get the chance to do something that you want, which then perhaps turns out even better than what you thought.  It’s the kind of Erasure/Scissor Sisters-inspired track that Rod does so well. It moves along briskly and is bound to become a new favourite in his live sets in this new era of music for him.

DLG., "Drown in You"

DLG., “Drown In You”

DLG. is L.A.-based, Austin-born singer and producer Dave De La Garza, who creates intricate sounds that as a whole generate all kinds of cool vibes in his new single “Drown In You”. It’s one of two songs he’s released in March (the other being “Close One!”), something he’s planning to do again during each of the next several months. “Drown in You” exudes a soulfulness amid hard drum sounds and a killer bass groove, and would likely sound great live. His vocal is pushed back a bit in the mix, almost used like an effect à la Porter Robinson. Songs by DLG. have already had placements in HBO and Netflix shows and films that have generated millions of streams. His eclectic style is a bit out of my wheelhouse but  listeners looking for something fresh to groove to will be completely down with it.

Rachel Bochner, "Sucker Punch"

RACHEL BOCHNER, “Sucker Punch”

“Sucker Punch” is an enjoyable pop empowerment anthem from NYC indie singer/songwriter Rachel Bochner that has a fantasy element to it. It’s a solid post-heartbreak song about undoing how a relationship actually ended and creating a new ending that might include a ‘sucker punch’ of some sort. It’s about getting even, albeit in your own head, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, and the song isn’t sung or written maliciously. And that serves the empowerment purpose, looking back on the relationship and being able to tell others, through song, to do things differently and hold your own ground. So “Sucker Punch” might seem like a light listen, and that’s fine, but the perspective runs much deeper.

Linda Varg, "Fuck It Up"

LINDA VARG, “Fuck It Up”

It’s been a while since I’ve written about Sweden’s Linda Varg and her unique persona and outlook through her songwriting. She’s risen to new heights recently by working with Robbie Williams in a Tik Tok campaign, and has signed to a Sony-distributed label, with an album forthcoming. “Fuck It Up” is all about making change for yourself, not giving into other people’s designs for you, and creating your own best you, however individualized that may be. On this track, Linda gives a fine rock vocal that may remind the casual listener of Pink. “Fuck It Up” may sound intimidating on the surface, but it’s a grower that can easily be embraced more fully with additional spins.

Owl City, "Coco Moon"

Owl City’s new album Coco Moon

by Hunter J. Wilber

I have been an Owl City fan since his debut on the music scene with “Fireflies” in 2009, and the new album Coco Moon is the cultivation of all his musical styles from the past decade in a half.

Owl City, whose real name is Adam Young, produces all his own music using computer programs, unique instruments, and synthesizers. In Coco Moon, his production, synth work and lyric writing get ample time to shine. My favorite tracks are “Kelly Time”, which is based on the movie “Castaway”, from Wilson the volleyball’s point of view, “Adam, Check Please” which is an autobiographical song about Adam’s first job working in a grocery store, and “The Tornado”, a goose-bump inducing narrative where Adam recounts delivering newspapers as a kid during a twister.

If you like relatable lyrics, genius storytelling, and catchy sounds and rhythms, and if you have always wanted to dig into Owl City’s discography, Coco Moon is an album you will want to come back to as I definitely know I will. Listen to the full album at the Spotify link on the photo above.

#BILLCSTop30 #662 – March 27/23

There’s quite a shakeup at the top in this edition, where some long-lasting favourites make room for newer ones. And three new entries keep the fresh songs flowing into the chart, and they’re all independent releases!

REMINDER: As with the BILLCS  New Music Report, I’m now embedding the video link in the artwork for the song or the artist, which hopefully will allow the blog page to load faster and smoothly.  So you now have to click on the photos above the write up to hear the song or watch the video. Check out my ONLINE RADIO SHOWS below too as they are increasingly tied in with this blog.

Cerrone & Mercer featuring Brendan Reilly - The Only One

It’s “The Only One” by Cerrone & Mercer with British vocalist Brendan Reilly that takes over at the top moving up 6-1. It’s a fantastic 70’s disco-inspired track thanks to Cerrone, the popular disco producer from that era. It’s the third #1 for fellow French producer Mercer, who reached the top last year with “Aretha” and in 2018 with “Satisfy”.

Immediately looking to challenge for #1 is British dance producer Lewis Thompson with vocalist/songwriter Clementine Douglas with “Enchanté” soaring 10-2.

Afrojack & James Arthur - Lose You

Still on the rise within the Top 5 are Afrojack and James Arthur with “Lose You”, climbing 5-3.

Frank Walker featuring Ella Henderson, "I Go Dancing"

And also landing quickly in the Top 5 is “I Go Dancing” by Canadian dance producer Frank Walker with UK singer Ella Henderson, which jumps 9-4.

Famba feat. Glasgow KI$$, "No Sleep"

Another Canadian producer, Famba, gets his fourth Top 10 entry with the techno-infused “No Sleep”, featuring Glasgow KI$$, which moves up 11-8.

Everything But The Girl, "Nothing Left to Lose"

UK duo Everything But The Girl also scores their fourth Top 10 entry with the drum ‘n bass-infused “Nothing Left To Lose”, which rises 13-10. Their last entry, however was right at the turn of the century, “Temperamental”, which reached #2 in 2000. Be sure to check out the video which is shot in one take.

N i G H T S - Boyband

Philadelphia duo N i G H T S could be headed for the Top 10 again with the eclectic but intriguing sounds of the brief “Boyband”, which climbs 22-16.

SG Lewis feat. Charlotte Day Wilson & Channel Tres, "Fever Dreamer"

The beautiful house track “Fever Dreamer” by SG Lewis, Charlotte Day Wilson and Channel Tres seemed to be stuck near the bottom of the chart, but breaks into the Top 20, jumping 23-18.

The Fastest Riser on the chart is “I Feel Like Dancing” by Jason Mraz, which soars 30-20. It’s from his upcoming album Mystical Magical Rhythmical Radical Ride, and has another fun video which you should check out above.

The Boy From The South, "Amazing-Man"

The Highest Debut belongs to a Spanish singer/songwriter who has a similar style to Jason Mraz, but in his own unique way. The Boy From The South makes his debut on the chart with the whimsical “Amazing-Man” at #25.

St Humain, "Memento"

His EP Metadramatic is full of great songs, most of which were released as singles and written up in these blog pages. His name is St Humain, originally from Singapore but now based in Sydney, Australia, and one of those songs, “Memento”, bows at #27.

And arriving at #28 is new Toronto singer/songwriter Tyler Lorette who shows a lot of promise with the emotional ballad “Shattered”. If you enjoy Conan Gray and JVKE like I do, then you’ll enjoy Tyler’s song too.

SPOTLIGHTING

Marcus & Martinus, "Air"

MARCUS & MARTINUS, “Air”

“Air” was the distant runner-up in Sweden’s recent Melodifestivalen contest, and Loreen’s stunning “Tattoo” went on to become Sweden’s representative at EuroVision in May. But let’s also just say that “Air” was the obvious runner-up to “Tattoo” among a lot of mediocre entries this year. Marcus & Martinus are twin early 20-something’s from Norway, and they have imminent potential to breakout worldwide, even if “Air” may not be – but should be – the song to do that. Nonetheless, “Air” is a beautifully crafted song that’s a terrific showcase for the singers, and they certainly gave their all on the Melodifestivalen stage, winning over a whole bunch of new fans in the process.

Cobi, "Telepathic Powers"

COBI, “Telepathic Powers”

L.A.-based alternative singer/songwriter Cobi has continued with a series of releases that draw heavily from bluesy rock and R&B. This time, “Telepathic Powers”, with such a beautiful guitar melody, steps right out of 70’s and 80’s romantic R&B jams, making that long absent sub-genre sound completely fresh again. “Telepathic Powers” is rich, warm and inviting, with another splendid Cobi vocal, and you’ll want to play it more and more. A full album of Cobi’s recent releases would be sure to sparkle!

Reya, "attention"

REYA, “attention”

Hailing from Norway but now based in Spain and of Chilean heritage, Reya is definitely out to seduce your ears with the infectious release “attention”. Although she had some success recording under another variation of her name, Reya wanted to express herself more honestly, incorporating both style and language from her heritage, which is why “attention” is partially sung in Spanish. With an alternately sultry and sassy vocal alongside a taut arrangement that perhaps comes to life a little later in the song than usual, Reya’s “attention” is out to out to conquer without apology, and it’s going to leave one line stuck in your head for days: “I can make the phone stop”. So we can say that Reya’s simpler quest for “attention” from music fans certainly succeeds with this song.

Laroie, "Tragedy"

LAROIE, “Tragedy”

Laroie is the new moniker for Gab Godon, once one half of acclaimed Montreal duo Heartstrings, which had the fortune to work with Kaytranada while he was on the rise. After working with a childhood friend in Heartstrings and splitting a few years back, Gab took time to carve out a new persona in Laroie. “Tragedy” is the title song of her new six song EP, and its slick 90’s flavoured R&B will make your ears stand at attention. Shades of Janet Jackson, SWV and Brandy will be dancing inside your head as you listen to her engaging but mellow mid-tempo sound in this release. “Tragedy”, I suspect, is just a small but vibrant taste of what’s in store for us from Laroie.

FEATURING

Last Heroes, Dyson, "Stay The Night

LAST HEROES, DYSON, “Stay The Night”

British singer Dyson’s vocal is showcased admirably by Colorado production duo Last Heroes in “Stay The Night”. It’s a melodic deep house track that employs some well-placed bounce to elevate it further next to your average house track about finding that one person who is a “keeper”. Although they have never visited my blog pages before, Last Heroes have been making music for the last seven years or so and have played alongside top electronic producers like Illenium, Seven Lions and more. Dyson’s credits in the pop/dance genre are a songwriter’s dream – BTS, Basshunter, Tritonal, Loud Luxury, Zack Martino, Anastacia, and countless others. Although “Stay The Night” to me could have been a bit shorter, all of that experience translates into a catchy release that really shines.

The Summer Set, "Under The Influence(r)"

THE SUMMER SET, “Under The Influence(r)”

“Under The Influence(r)” is fun, cheery, edgy alt. rock with some creative wordplay courtesy of Arizona’s The Summer Set, who returned last year with their first album in 6 years called Blossom. Lead singer Brian Logan Dales also wrote “Under The Influence(r)”, and he’s in fine form vocally too. Set to a tight melody, the song’s lyrics will keep you intrigued because you won’t know what to expect next in a story about a guy who gets his heart broken by a social media influencer. The music reminds me of late 90’s and early 2000’s pop-punk bands (think American Hi-Fi or Bowling for Soup), so when it’s all done right like in “Under The Influence(r)”, almost anything can sound refreshing all over again.

GT_ofice, Chris Padin, Krysta Youngs, "Invite Only"

GT_OFICE, CHRIS PADIN, KRYSTA YOUNGS, “Invite Only”

Following up his recent Top 20 national radio hit “Never Together” – his hit from last year, “Tuff”, with VASSY, debuted a year ago on my chart, see further near the bottom of the page – Miami producer GT_ofice is back with a melodic earworm, “Invite Only”. This time his collaborators are NYC producer Chris Padin and L.A.-based singer/songwriter Krysta Youngs, who has some impressive credits writing for BTS among others. “Invite Only” is about making sure you don’t let your guard down, and being in control of your own destiny with love. Krysta’s vocal is assured and vibrant, while the producers spice it up with 90’s flavours and bass synths that make it ideal for late nights in clubs.

Robert Falcon, Stephanie Schulte, "Kids"

ROBERT FALCON, STEPHANIE SCHULTE, “Kids”

I think you’ll be as surprised as me when you hear this unexpected and enjoyable dance music cover of “Kids”, originally by MGMT, by Belgian producer Robert Falcon with NYC vocalist Stephanie Schulte. While the style isn’t surprising, given that excerpts of the original is often played in clubs and at festivals, it’s the exceptional quality in production by Robert and vocal by Stephanie that make this cover a good investment of your in time. The basic arrangement is pretty faithful, surrounded by lusher keyboards, but with a pop vocal that’s quite far removed from MGMT’s original. That all makes this rendition of “Kids” well worth hearing and a solid addition to pop or dance playlists.

I don’t have any editorials, news or wise words to share. After having the flu this week, I empathize with career writers though, as they get older, when they become sick or unmotivated, and how to get back on track after that. All I can say is “keep on keeping on”…

In addition to the posts about individual songs, you can read about my pick of the week, along with picks from online radio buddies “Big Daddy” Russ Horton and Hunter Wilbur.  “The Musicman” James Rogers has more notable 80’s pop this week with his Classic Five pop hits feature.

The BILLCS New Music Report is a work-in-progress and I welcome your suggestions so feel free to contact me @billcs on Twitter @thebillcs on Instagram or @BILLCSMusicProjects on Facebook.

REMINDER:  Be sure to click on the photos above the song titles and artists’ names to hear the songs or watch the videos.

SPOTLIGHTING

The Boy From The South, "Amazing-Man"

THE BOY FROM THE SOUTH, “Amazing-Man”

Pedro Balaña Perez may just be the European counterpart to Jason Mraz. With an indie-folk background and less than a dozen releases under his belt as The Boy From The South, including the recent, humorous single “Stereotypes”, the Barcelona talent has got a new big favourite in my book with the upbeat pop of “Amazing-Man”. The song coincides with Jason’s return to pop with “I Feel Like Dancing”, but style is where the similarity ends. “Amazing-Man” is jaunty pop with a gentle, downright appealing vocal that makes you want to find out more about this guy. Part of Pedro’s deft songwriting is using a variety of comparisons – such as even to “the bassist of Level 42” 🙂 – while still keeping “Amazing-Man” inside his happy mystique. The circus-themed video above is a winner, and my guess is that the more you play “Amazing-Man” like I did, the more you’ll want to keep hearing it, making it a unique bright spot for any playlist.

Win & Woo, PENNYWILD, "What I Got"

WIN & WOO, PENNYWILD, “What I Got”

“What I Got” is a sassy slice of techno house from Chicago dance music mainstays Win & Woo and L.A.-based multi-talent PENNYWILD. The song slips and slides in all the right directions, a bit of a welcome changeup for Nick Winholt and Austin Woo, who have been regular visitors to this blog over the years with a variety of gems like “Break Me Down”, “Here U R” and “Sleepwalking”. PENNYWILD takes that edgy techno groove and runs with it with a noteworthy, attention-grabbing vocal, with her style a great fit for Win & Woo’s electronic prowess. Check out the video above, directed by PENNYWILD, which is well-choreographed and has some throwback Britney Spears vibes.

KINGA, "Something's Gotta Give"

KINGA, “Something’s Gotta Give”

Toronto-based pop/dance singer Kinga follows up his return to the performing side of the biz with last year’s re-take on “Sexy Boy” with the bright and effervescent “Something’s Gotta Give”. The song does a great job of distracting you away from your daily toils thanks to Kinga’s playful vocal, which drives a rhythm fueled by some high end synth work. The 80’s pop flavour, which recalls songs by the likes of George Michael/Wham!, Thompson Twins, Information Society, Berlin and other prominent names of that decade, gives an added bounce and dimension to a fine song. “Something’s Gotta Give” is brisk fun and a real pick-me-up.

FEATURING

Haleine & Elephante, "Hollow"

HALEINE, ELEPHANTE, “Hollow”

“Hollow” is an interesting meeting place for two electronic artists who have largely had different directions. Haleine (Cape Code-born Kelly Sweet) has spent most of the last decade as both a solo vocalist (last year’s album, Heavenly) and collaborator in the progressive and trance genres, working with notable producers like Seven Lions, Andrew Rayel, William Black, Aly & Fila, and Gareth Emery. In the same time frame, Elephante (L.A.-based Tim Wu) has released two solo albums and an EP, whose songs veer often to pop/dance with some experimentalism, also collaborating with such vocalists as Mako, Anjulie, Nevve, and Brandyn Burnette. So “Hollow” is both a co-write and co-production along with Canadian Matthew Steeper that veers in the direction that Illenium and Odesza have helped set for edgier electronic pop. It’s a beautifully arranged and sung feast for the emotions, and meant to be played at festivals or stadiums, featuring some future bass elements that don’t go over the top. “Hollow” is a welcome partnership for Haleine and Elephante that should be repeated.

Tyler Garrett, "Slowly Drowning"

TYLER GARRETT, “Slowly Drowning”

L.A.-based singer/songwriter Tyler Garrett’s latest single, “Slowly Drowning”, is progressive electronic pop that tackles subjects like mutual trust and making the right decisions. Surrounded by an inventive production starting off with off-kilter-sounding synths that set the stage for an uncharacteristic story where love is the ultimate solution, “Slowly Drowning” builds with Tyler’s urgently expressive vocal which culminates with the plea in a relationship at a stasis, “can we both survive?”. “Slowly Drowning” is a busy, topical song that suits the darker side of electronic pop.

Mr! Mouray, "Pretty In Ink"

MR! MOURAY, “Pretty In Ink”

If you think “Pretty In Ink” bears resemblance to its similarly titled 80’s new wave track “Pretty In Pink” by The Psychedelic Furs, it ends at the nicely busy guitar work. “Pretty In Ink” is a more whimsical, melodic song in the vein of fellow Canadians Sloan or The Northern Pikes by Toronto quartet Mr! Mouray. Like previous single “Cats Can’t Fly”, “Pretty In Ink” comes from their album full of similarly amusing titles, “What’s The Stouray?”. While not as immediately catchy as “Cats Can’t Fly”, “Pretty In Ink” features good vocals by Simon Bedford-James and focuses on what the band of veterans does best – no nonsense pop/rock showcasing a myriad of influences.

#BILLCSTop30 #661 – March 13/22

I’m using this space this week to provide readers and chartphiles with a little bit of insight into how I compile my chart and what I take into consideration. First and foremost, it is entirely based on my own opinion. But what you have to realize, is that I really do love all of the songs on the chart.

There are only 30 of about 60 or more that are on my personal, private playlist that I play regularly throughout the week. More than 40% of the songs on my chart are released independently, but you may have noticed that this is the only space where I would write about most of those songs released on major labels. Most of those songs don’t need my help with inclusion in the BILLCS New Music Report but I’m not going to disregard a song I love because it’s released on a major label.

Songs are added to the chart with the intention that they could reach my Top 10. Some don’t simply due to the competition. Some songs wear out faster than others. And then there are songs that are “growers” and take time to travel up the chart too. Very few songs peak at #20 or below as a result. And yes, sometimes I may chart a song and soon get sick of it, or retrospectively feel that I should have charted one when I didn’t.

Submissions from artists, managers, and publicists always take priority, but the most important thing – submission or not – is my gut feeling about a song through the discovery process.

Martin Garrix & JVKE, "Hero"

Getting a third appearance at the top of the chart is “Hero” by Martin Garrix and JVKE, surpassing Martin’s previous #1’s “Animals” and “Proxy”, which each had two appearances at #1 in 2014. It’s hard to say what song will succeed “Hero” at the top as early as in two weeks.

Afrojack & James Arthur - Lose You

“Lose You” by Afrojack and James Arthur climbs 7-5 and is one of those songs that gets even better with frequent plays.

Cerrone & Mercer featuring Brendan Reilly - The Only One

“The Only One” by Cerrone, Mercer, and Brendan Reilly leaps 13-6, becoming Mercer’s fourth trip to the Top 10. It’s from the excellent album Cerrone By Cerrone, wherein the renown French disco producer reboots his biggest classics in fine fashion too.

Frank Walker featuring Ella Henderson, "I Go Dancing"

“I Go Dancing” by Frank Walker and Ella Henderson climbs 17-9, becoming Frank’s second release to get to my Top 10 after 2021’s #1 “Like Gold” with Loud Luxury and Stephen Puth. You can catch Frank throughout North America this summer as support for acts like Loud Luxury at major venues.

The Fastest Riser on the chart is the 90’s house-soaked “Enchanté” by Just Kiddin’s Lewis Thompson and singer/songwriter Clementine Douglas, which soars 20-10. It’s Clementine’s third visit to the Top 10, previously credited on Sonny Fodera’s “Angel” (#4) and uncredited on Matoma’s “The Power” (#3).

Dabin & Kai Wachi featuring Lo Spirit - Hollow

Toronto-born electronic producer Dabin played a sold out show in his home town on March 12, and his latest collaboration “Hollow” with Kai Wachi and vocalist Lø Spirit moves up 21-16.

Kx5 & Sofi Tukker - Sacrifice

“Sacrifice” is a beautiful, complex effort from Kx5 (Kaskade and Deadmau5) in collaboration with Sofi Tukker, and it rises 23-17.

Party Nails featuring Boy Sim - Like U

Think of “Like U” by L.A.’s Party Nails and Austin’s Boy Sim as a pre-summer bop. This engaging release moves up 27-21.

N i G H T S - Boyband

Philadelphia duo N i G H T S are all about the hip hop inspired atmosphere in “Boyband”, which climbs 28-22. I’m really not sure what the song is all about, but its vibe is hypnotic and I’m glad it’s getting deserved attention five years after its original release.

Surf Mesa featuring Selah Sol - City Of Love

The Highest Debut belongs to Seattle’s Surf Mesa (aka 22 year old Powell Aguirre) with vocalist Selah Sol and “City of Love” at #28. This melodic house track stirs up the feels for anyone who has felt out of place in big city surroundings after a breakup. You can catch Surf Mesa on the festival circuit this year, and he plays a captivating set.

Greg Oakland featuring Tara Louise - Never Temporary

Next at #29 is NYC-based indie electronic producer Greg Oakland with his trance-influenced “Never Temporary”, featuring a potent vocal by Tara Louise. Greg actually sent to me the song to hear months ago, and I’m so glad the team at Future Sounds of Egypt had the inspired taste to release another song by Greg. And here it is on my chart!

Arriving at #30 is what I would call a “comeback” record for Jason Mraz and a return to the whimsical pop sound which got him his first hit 20 years ago. The song is “I Feel Like Dancing” from the upcoming album Mystical Magical Rhythmical Radical Ride (I dare you to keep those words in proper order!), and be sure and check out the seamlessly filmed and well-choreographed video above.  It’s Jason’s 10th appearance on my chart but his first since 2012.

#BILLCSNewMusicReport – March 8/23 spotlighting new songs by @Jason_Mraz @Audien x @Codekomusic x @JTRoachmusic @TylerLorettee @Nikomakesbeats & @MAYLYN_music

I don’t have any editorial or observations to share in this new edition of the Report. I am trying something a little different with my layout, returning to a strategy I used in the early days of this blog. I’ve noticed that my blog page is difficult to load on my phone, so it must be difficult for you as well. I think this is because I use numerous video links which are then embedded into the post. So instead, I’m going to embed the video link in the artwork for the song or the artist, which hopefully will allow the blog page to load faster and smoothly.  So you now have to click on the photos above the artist and song title to hear the song or watch the video. Let me know how it works for you!

In addition to the posts about individual songs, you can read about my pick of the week, along with picks from online radio buddies “Big Daddy” Russ Horton and Hunter Wilbur.  “The Musicman” James Rogers focuses on 80’s pop this week with his Classic Five pop hits feature.

SPOTLIGHTING

JASON MRAZ, “I Feel Like Dancing”

Sometimes returning to a sound that put you on a map can be a really good thing. I adore Jason Mraz’s first two albums Waiting For My Rocket To Come and Mr. A-Z, in which he found a way with some good humour and whimsy, which also translated well into the concert performances I saw. His first hit, “The Remedy (I Won’t Worry)” was my #1 song of 2003 and a theme song for me for that part of my life. 20 years later, we now have “I Feel Like Dancing”, and you are encouraged to dance along with Jason. Who can possibly resist that hip hop flavoured bass and Jason’s return to astute “Wordplay”, to quote the title of another one of my favourites by him. Like in 2003, this is feel-good, jaunty pop that stands out, but now it’s by a seasoned, twice Grammy-winning performer who has always taken stylistic risks. Mr. A-Z is back and we’re delighted to have him.

AUDIEN, CODEKO, J.T. ROACH, “Antidote”

Even though it doesn’t have anything new to say lyrically, “Antidote” gives you all the feels you’re looking for, thanks to the great reteaming of Grammy nominated producer Audien with UK producer Codeko. It follows up Audien’s huge dance radio hit with UK singer/songwriter Joe Jury, “Drifting Away”. The music is in “Antidote” is all about the early 2010’s, with J.T. Roach’s memorable vocal helping to transport you to some of the best years of electronic dance music. But it’s the refined work of Audien and Codeko which makes “Antidote” a seamless example of fine contemporary record-making.

TYLER LORETTE, “Shattered”

Tyler Lorette is a 19 year old singer/songwriter from Courtice, Ontario, just east of my city, Toronto, who has been dabbling with a pop/country sound over the past few years. His powerful new single, “Shattered”, could easily be his breakout, and was brought to my attention by Hunter Wilbur as a recent “bop of the week” in previous edition of the BILLCS New Music Report. Like songs on Conan Gray’s recent Superache album, Tyler grapples anxiously with heartbreak in “Shattered”, but a graceful arrangement offsets the anguish in the lyrics. I wasn’t sure initially if the almost-acoustic backdrop worked, but after multiple listens, it would be hard to hear it with more production.

NIKO THE KID, MAYLYN, “Only One”

It’s been a while since I’ve written about music by Atlanta-born Niko The Kid, who has since released many songs for an assortment of dance labels, after creating countless remixes for the likes of Kelly Clarkson, Miley Cyrus and Ariana Grande, and collaborating on songs by artists like Odesza. “Only One” may need a listen or two, but you’ll find it has just the right amount of spit and polish, with impressive  synths that will zing you in the middle of a club set.  Go-to Nashville-based dance music singer/songwriter MAYLYN has a voice with the power and conviction to help the song stand out even more. Be sure not to let “Only One” slip by.

FEATURING

KACEY FIFIELD, “Selfish”

“Selfish” is a thoughtful ballad that pushes the envelope stylistically for L.A.’s 18 year old Kacey Fifield, following up her debut electronic pop album from last year, Between The Lines. It’s a bold song where she confronts a partner of a past relationship. She doesn’t mince words, with advice beyond her years for those in her age group, though the effect for the listener is cultivated with a beautiful, often delicate melody courtesy of long-time collaborator and producer Robbie Rosen. Kacey Fifield is carving out her own lane with softer, electronic pop music that often has an edge, and young listeners especially should pay attention.

KAPUCHON, “Education”

Afrojack is keeping awfully busy these days, and that also means giving his side project, Kapuchon, some air time. “Education” is a downright catchy instrumental that holds its own for almost five minutes. It’s bound to get some play at festivals where its unique synth work will go over well with the crowds, who are always looking for different vibes to set them off. Its snappy rhythm is hard to resist, and electronic music fans who love instrumentals will find the most favour with “Education”.

The 004, "Home"

THE 004, “Home”

The 004 is a Dutch pop trio of Mike, Kelly and Janet, who have actually sung together for 20 years, but have only recently started releasing music. “Home” is their second single and is like a warm hug that will make you smile at the end, even though the song is about the loss of a loved one. The singers’ rich tones and pleasant harmonies go a long way. While “Home” is just lovely, better production could take everything to another level, as you can only go so far on basic, acoustic arrangements. But I’m hopeful that this can occur so that The 004 can receive more attention outside of The Netherlands.

Tommy Newport, "Fate"

TOMMY NEWPORT, “Fate”

UK-born, US-raised Tommy Newport returns with his first full length album in five years called Glasshead, which includes previous single “Tongue and Cheek” as well as the melodic new track, “Fate”. While “Fate” doesn’t tell us anything new, part of the appeal of Tommy’s music is its low-fi, psychedelic pop sound, which gives it fanciful authenticity and looks back to the 1960’s as an influential. And that compliments his vocal too, which allows you to easily tune in to what he’s singing about. In April, Tommy will be touring the west coast on selected dates, and you can learn more about them right here.

Nikolas IV, "Cut Me Out"

NIKOLAS IV, “Cut Me Out”

Nikolas IV is an enigmatic new name in the alt.pop world and his brutally honest “Cut Me Out” is a great start. The L.A.-based singer-songwriter gets great help with production by none other than Frankmusik, and “Cut Me Out” is co-written with Grammy-nominated songwriter Jesse Saint James, best known for co-writing Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts”, but who has also written songs for Britney Spears, Kim Petras, Lauv, and many others. The lyrics are full of regret, but what Nikolas is singing about is clearly in the past, so time and reflection has softened the initial pain. A lot of folks will relate to “Cut Me Out”, so Nikolas IV is another new name to add to your watch list.

LORD and D'Amico & Valax, "Power"

LØRD, D’AMICO & VALAX,  “Power”

“Power” is engaging europop-flavoured tech house by rising producers who all hail from Italy, newcomer LØRD (aka Luis Rodriguez) and the duo D’Amico and Valax, which follows up their recent release “Shine”. The heart of the song is an uplifting, Gospel-flavoured chorus that would easily lift a club set midway. The rest of “Power” is carried by a driving, tech house rhythm and some busy, ear-catching synth work which makes it distinct. Although over 3 minutes long, the song comes and goes quickly, so enjoy the ride.

Francesca Louise, "The Sea"

FRANCESCA LOUISE, “The Sea”

“The Sea” is the kind of soft, serene release that requires your undivided attention. That seems to be a goal of fresh-voiced British singer/songwriter Francesca Louise, who was a contestant on The Voice UK last year. And Francesca has the vocal prowess to do it – you may recall her tribute to a lost loved one last year called “For Michael”. “The Sea” is an ode to the city of Rome, drawn from her personal experiences developing friendships and loving relationships there. This sweet song is accentuated by understated strings and acoustic guitar work, but it’s Francesca’s committed, lovely tone that is the star. Pick your quiet moment to enjoy everything that “The Sea” offers.

33 Black, "Edge Of The Knife"

33 BLACK, “Edge of the Knife”

33 Black is the northern California-based duo of  Travis Rigsbee and Jed Sprague who are intent on crowd-pleasing with their new album Out Of The Clouds, which contains 16 tracks and has uniquely been funded by the band’s fans! These guys know what they’re doing in the studio, and though some of their songs contain too many country elements for my tastes, the majority of them are rockers influenced by the best groups of the 90’s, such as Collective Soul, Counting Crows and Third Eye Blind. “Edge of the Knife” is a fun rocker that comes out of the gate with guitars blazing and a jaunty rhythm. The melody is really strong and the hand claps help turn it into a song that would win over a small club audience in concert.
