Tuned-On! Top 30 #313 November 9/09

The new edition of the Tuned-On! Top 30, my personal chart, is available here.

100 Akres & Roz Bell fended off significant challenges to hang on to #1 for two more weeks with their free download of “Pink Cadillac” (the free download link is on the chart page). Now we’ll have to wait and see in two weeks if either Dan Black’s “Alone” or Mika’s “Blame It On The Girls” will top the chart. Calvin Harris’ “Ready For The Weekend” and Matt & Kim’s “Daylight” (also a free download) both advance into the Top 5. David Rush’s “Shooting Star”, Hot Chelle Rae’s “I Like To Dance”, and “We Are Okay” by Joshua Radin all become top ten entries.

Just below, the fastest riser on the chart is another great Dan Black track, the club-worthy “Pump My Pumps”. Dan’s CD UN is supposed to come out in North America digitally towards the end of November. Also making a big move is one of last week’s debuts, “Empire State of Mind” by Jay-Z featuring Alicia Keys. Alicia’s chorus should become the new slogan for NYC!

Five terrific debuts round out the chart this week, and three of them are downloadable for free. In the past few weeks in this blog, you’ve already read about Simon Curtis’ “Delusional”, Mitchell Hunter’s “Somebody Else’s”, and Lady GaGa’s “Bad Romance”, but my other debuts belong to Dutch DJ Dash Berlin (who has actually teamed up with former Alice Deejay members) featuring vocalist Emma Hewitt in impending club smash “Waiting” and UK pop/dance singer Luigi Masi with his free download of “Radar”. Luigi also released a CD this past summer called Save His Shoes but it does not include “Radar”. I’m the worst one to want to talk about anything to do with the holidays until later in November, but knowing that Pet Shop Boys have an intriguing EP in store for us makes it all seem a little warmer.  News came from Twitter @petshopboys yesterday.

Rόisín Murphy “Orally Fixated” is Hot ‘n Steamy!

“Orally Fixated” has taken me for a bit of a loop.  As different “Ramalama (Bang Bang)” was from “Overpowered”, we find our Rόisín on a funky 80’s bent (MJ or Prince influences, anyone?).  And I think there’s a sample from a 90’s dance hit in here that’s driving me mad.  If there’s any track that might break Ms Murphy into the North American mainstream, this is it.  And clubbers are probably already clamoring for remixes.

If there’s one pop track you need to hear this week, it’s “Delusional” by new U.S. singer Simon Curtis.

Simon’s been gradually breaking into the biz over the past few years, most notably with a role in the Nickelodeon movie “Spectacular”, which we unfortunately have not yet seen in Canada.  He’s been actively tweeting his upcoming project, and promised fans that if he reached 6,000 followers he would make “Delusional” available for free.  He accomplished that this past week, and voila – “Delusional” is available for download at the link below.  What’s particularly stunning about this track are his high notes, which are Darren Hayes-worthy!

Mitchell Hunter “Somebody Else’s”

It’s a warm welcome back to Canadian singer/songwriter Mitchell Hunter, who has released a new EP called Signals & Goodbyes with lead off track called “Somebody Else’s”.

I first encountered Mitchell’s music through M4B Charts Central message board member (and indie singer/producer) Michael Blacke.  Mitchell released his first CD in 2004 called People Will Believe Anything If You Whisper It, which yielded one of my favourite songs of that year called, a great piano/storytelling song called “They Might Say”, which still pops up on my iTouch regularly.

Mitchell’s latest release “Somebody Else’s” has a brighter pop sound to it and a mighty catchy chorus, so be sure to check it out at the link below.

Globalchart – October 25/09

Each week, the Globalchart on the M4B Charts Central (M4BCC) message board is updated to reflect the week’s musings over music from approximately 50 personal chart compilers around the world on the Internet.

Chart #395 sees Kelly Clarkson’s “Already Gone” hanging on to #1, while songs by Owl City and Britney Spears challenge for next week.  Lady GaGa’s “Bad Romance” makes a stunning splash at #26.

Tuned-On! Top 30 #312 – October 26/09 – Bill’s Personal Chart

Dan Black’s “Symphonies” gives way to the free download track of “Pink Cadillac” by 100 Akres & Roz Bell – the first free, major label-less song to reach the top of my chart. That’s quite a feat and to me just shows the online, fan-oriented direction the music industry is going in. Great music is being made and posted everywhere – ya just gotta find it!  Below is an acoustic clip of Roz singing “Pink Cadillac”, as well as the free download link to the song (also available on the chart page itself)…

Mr. Black also has the Fastest Riser on the chart with “Alone”, a recent UK single. He’s had a couple of showcase concert dates in NYC this past weekend, his only dates so far in North America. Also making a huge move is someone else who is actively touring, Mika with the magnificent “Blame It On The Girls”. American duo Matt & Kim are everywhere these days as “Daylight” steps into the Top 10.

There’s lots of activity on the chart as significant moves come from songs by David Rush, Hot Chelle Rae, Joshua Radin, Roz Bell, and Michael Buble. There are only two debuts, which means the basement of the chart will likely be sent packing in two weeks.

 I really have the NYC bug after being there this past summer – I wanna go back soon, but I don’t know when that will be!! Anyway, “Empire” is a great ode to that city.

 Dan gets a rare fourth concurrent entry on the chart from his CD UN. This one’s a tad unusual, but definitely worth repeated plays. It’s a potential club banger along the likes of David Rush’s “Shooting Star” or Kevin Rudolf’s “Let It Rock”. Audio link below for your enjoyment!

Oops! GaGa’s done it again – SMASH

It’s classic end-of-the-decade stuff.  Lady GaGa follows up her hits from The Fame with an equally strong new single “Bad Romance”.  Will we tire of it fast? Wait and see – but for now watch it sail to the top of the charts!
