BILLCS Top 30 #715 – April 7/25

The MAYHEM takeover continued during these past few weeks, when Lady Gaga announced her concert tour, with three dates in my city – none of which offered affordable seats, so I had to pass on seeing her a second time for now. I’m hoping her label pushes “Vanish into You” as a second single following “Abracadabra”, and you can find both on the chart again this week.  Five debuts help freshen up the new chart too.

As was mentioned in the BILLCS New Music Report last week, my daughter VXTORIA‘s “Back to You” saw release on Friday, and for a debut single it’s off to a great start with oodles of positive comments and one wonderful review.  Please check it out and share at the following link – “Back to You” .

Check out information about my ONLINE RADIO SHOWS after the chart commentary below as they are now directly tied in with this blog.  As most of you know, I host 3 online radio shows – The Big 20 and two iterations of Your Weekend New Music Mix – and produce 2 online radio segments – my new music and retro picks of the week – that are all pre-recorded. The Big 20 and the picks of the week are happily being syndicated and you can find the current schedule for all at the bottom of the home page of this blog.

NOTE: With phasing out the You Tube links for the songs on the chart for accessibility purposes, most of the links to the songs via the photos are now Spotify links.

Lady Gaga, "Abracadabra"

Lady Gaga’s “Abracadabra” (above) gets a third appearance on top.  Her most recent #1, “Rain On Me” with Ariana Grande, remained at the summit for four appearances, so we’ll see if “Abracadabra” can match it in two weeks.  And “Vanish into You” (below) is up 25-20 too.

Lady Gaga, "Vanish Into You"

Henri PFR, "Up In The Sky"

Some changes in the Top 5 allowed Belgian producer Henri PFR’s earworm “Up In The Sky” to rise up a notch, 4-3.

MGR Mike, Milton V, "The Message"

Nashville’s MGR Mike and Mexico’s Milton V move up 6-4 with their joyous collaboration “The Message”.

Sonny Fodera, Clementine Douglas, "Tell Me"

With “Somedays” recently at #1 for a month (now on its way off the chart at #30), it’s no surprise to find Sonny Fodera and Clementine Douglas in the Top 5 again with their latest release “Tell Me”, which jumps 11-5.  Their track together “Angel” got to #4 in late 2021.

Kygo, One Republic, "Chasing Paradise"

Kygo follows up last year’s #1 “Without You” (with Hayla) with “Chasing Paradise” (with One Republic) into the Top 10, climbing 13-7. It’s Kygo’s fourth trip to the Top 10, and One Republic’s 5th.

Magic Bronson, "Good Dogs"

The Fastest Riser on the chart is the good-natured indie release “Good Dogs” by L.A. duo Magic Bronson and their album of the same name. It soars 16-9.

Luca Hanni, "Love Me Better"

Also landing in the Top 10 is Switzerland Luca Hänni with “Love Me Better”, which rises 12-10, becoming his 2nd Top 10 entry.

Benson Boone, "Sorry I'm Here For Someone Else"

While there’s a log jam mid-chart of smaller moves, the remaining debuts from the last chart climb up five places each, right behind Lady Gaga’s “Vanish Into You”.  Benson Boone’s got another smash with “Sorry I’m Here For Someone Else” (26-21, above), while Michael Medrano’s fun, innuendo-filled “Martini (Shots)”(below) jumps 27-22.

Michael Medrano, "Martini (Shots)"

sombr, "back to friends"

Leading the way is the artist who led last week’s Report – L.A. based alternative singer/songwriter sombr (aka 19 year old Shane Boose).  “Back to Friends” is already making waves at radio and crashes the chart as its Highest Debut at #24.  He also opens for Why Don’t We’s Daniel Seavey in a sold out show at Toronto venue The Opera House on Thursday April 10.

Martin Garrix, Arijit Singh, "Angels for Each Other"

Next in line at #26 is Martin Garrix, teaming up with India’s Arijit Singh for “Angels for Each Other”, notable not only for its collaboration with a celebrated Indian artist but also for Martin’s first release using his vocals. It’s Martin’s 15th entry on the chart.

Jay Bird, "Do It Like Me"

At #27 is the latest bundle of fun from Bay area producer Jay Bird with his house track “Do It Like Me”, which comes from the Space Yacht label’s compilation Tech My House Volume 8.  It’s Jay Bird’s 5th entry on the chart.

Tiesto, Jordan Shaw, "Hold Me"

Tiesto returns to the chart, this time bringing British singer/songwriter Jordan Shaw (who just peaked at #3 with Lucas & Steve with “Heart First”) for their glorious new track “Hold Me”, which arrives at #28, from the EP Prismatic – Pack One. It’s Tiesto’s 7th chart entry – his first was in 2004 – and Jordan’s third.

Haim, "Relationships"

The debuts wrap up with the first chart entry for acclaimed California trio of sisters Haim with the soulful “Relationships” bowing at #29. They’re likely best known for their songs “The Wire”, “Pray to God” (with Calvin Harris) and “My Body, No Crime” (with Taylor Swift). “Relationships” is from their forthcoming fourth album.

BILLCS New Music Report – April 2/25 with new songs by sombr, GT_Ofice x Matthew Topper x Petie, Gino Vannelli, ALTEGO x Ely Oaks x Lavinia, Tavatli & Luxtides, Levi Robin, The Veils, and Television Skies

You’ll also find out what songs were in the Top 5 of the BILLCS Top 30 5-10-15-20-25 years ago!

Reminder:  Click on the photos below to listen to the songs, usually with a Spotify link unless otherwise indicated.

sombr, "back to friends"

sombr, "undressed"

sombr, “back to friends”, “undressed”

About the artist – sombr is 19 year old New York-born, L.A.-based singer/songwriter Shane Boose, who is coming out of nowhere it would seem much in the same way as Olivia Rodrigo did 4 years ago, with his unique brand of affecting lo-fi alt.pop.

About the records – “back to friends” and “undressed” have been released in quick succession to capitalize on radio’s interest in the former, which has arrived on the national charts. sombr has an ingratiating voice with gorgeous tones that quickly gets under your skin, making you want to hear out his full stories immediately, with a soulful edge that recalls Prince. Both songs also remind me when singers like JVKE and Stephen Sanchez, but with a more contemporary diverse sound now replacing the peppered retro flavours. In other words, the music of sombr doesn’t bring many other artists to mind, which is no mean feat, and looks tellingly towards the future. I’m torn between which song I like better at this time, they are both full of character and wide appeal.

Other comments – sombr is touring in North America with Daniel Seavey. He could very well be one of the year’s biggest breakouts.

GT_Ofice, Matthew Topper, Petie, "Something New"

GT_OFICE, MATTHEW TOPPER, PETIE, “Something New”

About the artists – GT_Ofice is the Miami-based producer who got to #1 recently on the national dance radio charts with the meltworthy house track “Someone Else”. Matthew Topper is a producer from NYC who collaborated previously with GT_Ofice on last year’s “Ecstasy” (which reached #8 on the BILLCS Top 30).  Vocalist Petie is another producer from NYC who may be a new name, but he’s not a new artists, previously recording and performing under the moniker MIME.

About the record – With another smooth uncredited male vocal, “Something New” is a worthy follow up to “Someone Else”. What’s cool about both songs is that they balance quieter, sweet moments, with upbeat, euphoric ones, and that’s a textbook, can’t miss formula. The three producers here create a cohesive flavour amid a slick overall sound.

Other comments – “Something New” will be heading for the top of the dance music radio charts soon. There is Top 40 radio potential here too but programmers seem closed-minded about including more danceable pop in their mix. This is for fans of the genre who enjoy feel-good, melodic house music.

Gino Vannelli, "Keep on Walking"

Video link – new version

Video link – 1976 performance

GINO VANNELLI, “Keep On Walking”

About the artist – The big-haired, handsome soulful pop crooner and guitarist from Montreal of the late 70’s and early 80’s had numerous hits, particularly the Top 10 “I Just Wanna Stop” and “Living Inside Myself”, “Wheels of Life”, and his breakout “People Gotta Move”. He reinvented himself in 1985 with the electronic, danceable pop/rock of “Black Cars” and “Wild Horses”. His latest album The Life I Got (To My Most Beloved) is his first new music in four years.

About the record – “Keep On Walking” is a jazzy redo of a 1975 release from his album Storm At Sunup, which strangely is not on streaming services. The quality is pin-drop pristine, not surprising since his best-selling Brother To Brother album won a Juno Award for its production, and Gino sounds marvelous. His longtime fans will love it, while those who enjoy great voices in a mellow setting will also find their happy place here. Never discount pop vets like Gino, they will continue to surprise you with the calibre of their contemporary recordings.

Other comments – I believe “Keep on Walking” is the only song on his new album that was previously recorded. Check out the video above, as well as a much earlier live performance of the song. Perhaps it’s time the Juno Awards elected Gino Vannelli to the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

ALTEGO, Ely Oaks, Lavinia, "No Regrets"

ALTÉGO, ELY OAKS, LAVINIA, “No Regrets”

About the artists – ALTÉGO is the wacky and infectious British DJ duo of twin brothers Michael and Lucas who crush it daily in their socials. Ely Oaks is an Austrian dance producer based in Berlin, while vocalist Lavinia also hails from Berlin.

About the record – “No Regrets” is a clever new song written around the melody of (gasp!) “The Ketchup Song” by Las Ketchup, a #1 UK hit and a massive one around Europe that faded as quickly as it arrived. While I’m not one for trendy sped-up vocals, the trick works when paired with the essential melody of “The Ketchup Song”, making “No Regrets” an instant earworm that you’ll bounce around to in no time.  “No Regrets” is bound to be a highlight of ALTÉGO’s sets when they play live shows.

Other comments – ALTÉGO make their North American debut on June 28 at Brooklyn Mirage opening for Oliver Heldens.  “No Regrets” will leave many listeners 25-35 scratching their heads, wondering how they know the melody, which is likely embedded in their heads for all the right reasons.

Tavatli, Luxtides, "Chemicals"

TAVATLI, LUXTIDES, “Chemicals”

About the artists – Oliver Tavatli is a relatively new L.A. based dance producer specializing in techno and house. Luxtides is the  recording name for NYC’s Danni Bouchard, who was the uncredited voice on David Guetta & Afrojack’s Grammy-nominated “Hero”, which premiered at EuroVision in 2023. She has also recorded with or written songs for Natasha Bedingfield, Borgeous, and Trivecta.

About the record – I particularly enjoy how “Chemicals” is structured and draws you in. A quiet start turns into an explosive and frantic techno track that will have you bouncing along, and uses Luxtides versatile voice to great effect. It’s a record that is both haunting and exhilarating, and a wonderful collaboration overall.

Other comments – “Chemicals” has huge sync potential for action and horror films as well as video games. The catchy synth work will linger in your head long after the song is over.

Levi Robin, "Whole as a Broken Heart"

LEVI ROBIN, “Whole As A Broken Heart”

About the artist – Levi Robin is a pop/folk singer from California with a rich tenor who released his first EP in 2013 followed by a debut album, Where Night Meets Day, in 2020.  “Whole As A Broken Heart” is his first new music in three years.

About the record – “Whole As A Broken Heart” is a deliberately paced, enthralling song where Levi’s vocal meshes styles of singers like Hozier, Chris Isaak, Beck, and Bob Dylan together. He’s a deft storyteller with a philosophical side, appealing to the broken-hearted to listen and and turn those negative feelings into something much better. There’s an old bluesy style that’s deep within too that I enjoy, similar to Cobi, another artist who I’ve written about frequently.  While the song may seem bleak at first listen, it’s really not, and ultimately pulls you in to enjoy the experience.

Other comments – Levi Robin has previously opened for Matisyahu on tour. “Whole As A Broken Heart” is produced by Yoel Kreisler, better known as FRAYMES, with whom Levi developed an immediate creative connection.

The Veils, "The Ladder"

THE VEILS, “The Ladder”

About the artist – The Veils is the alt.pop project created by British singer/songwriter/producer Finn Andrews, now based in New Zealand, who was signed to Rough Trade at only 16 years old.  “The Ladder” comes from The Veils’ 7th album in 20 years called Asphodels (the name of the Ancient Greek flower of the Underworld).

About the record – From an album recorded seamlessly live-to-tape, “The Ladder” continues Finn’s focus on songs about love and death, and this song uses the title image as a way of escape. Everything within is quite intentional, from its influence from painter Hieronymus Bosch through to a mellifluous string arrangement which accents the song’s melody rather than doing its own thing. It’s all pretty easy on the ears, but you find yourself going deeper with each listen.

Other comments – The Veils has previously played to sell out shows in Europe, North America and Australasia, so watch for another tour this year.

Television Skies, "Time of My Life"

TELEVISION SKIES, “Time of My Life”

About the artist – Television Skies is a NYC pop/rock duo consisting of vocalist/guitarist Ihor Shuhan and drummer Paul Maczaj, who have released six albums to date, the most recent being Fairy Tales and Demos for the Rockers and Romantics, the Heartbroken and the Hopeful.

About the record – “Time of My Life” contains some inspiring words about carrying on and letting go of past trials and tribulations to live your best life rather than dwell on hardships. The song you’ll immediately think of course is Green Day’s same-titled 90’s hit, but they really are quite different songs, with Green Day’s song more about lessons learned that led to celebration. A jaunty tune helps put the focus on good times with more ahead.

Other comments – Television Skies says their songs are influenced more by groups like Coldplay, The 1975 and Arctic Monkeys with a clear emphasis on melody over attitude.

BILLCS Top 30 #714 – March 24/25

This abbreviated chart blog post comes from Seattle, where my daughter VXTORIA is working with her artist developer on a photo shoot and a video for her upcoming single.

Lady Gaga’s Mayhem is certainly one of my favourite albums, and “Abracadabra” (above) easily gets a second appearance at #1.  I wonder what song further down the chart will succeed it?  Gaga also has the highest debut with my next favourite track on the album, “Vanish Into You” (below), which arrives at #25.

Lady Gaga, "Vanish Into You"

Anyma, Ellie Goulding, "Hypnotized"

Anyma and Ellie Goulding would have had a #1 with “Hypnotized” if not for “Abracadabra”, and it climbs 4-2. You might find it in the runner up spot two weeks from now too.

"Heart First", Lucas & Steve, Jordan Shaw

A truly fine feel good song, “Heart First” (above) by Lucas & Steve and vocalist/songwriter Jordan Shaw advances 5-3.  You can find another terrific vocal by Jordan on Tiësto’s recent release “Hold Me” (below).

Tiesto, Jordan Shaw, "Hold Me"

Henri PFR, "Up In The Sky"

A song that’s grown on me immensely in the past several weeks is the perky and upbeat “Up In The Sky” by Belgium’s Henri PFR, which breaks through the Top 10, climbing 11-4.

PAWSA, The Adventures of Stevie V, "Dirty Cash (Money Talks)"

The rework of “Dirty Cash (Money Talks)” by UK producer PAWSA and the original artist, legendary British house producer Stevie Vincent aka The Adventures Of Stevie V, moves up 7-5.

John Summit, CLOVES, "Focus"

John Summit is one producer you’ll find playing at Ultra Music Festival during Miami Music Week this year, and along with vocalist/songwriter CLOVES, he gets his second Top 10 entry on my chart with “Focus” moving up 14-10.

Sonny Fodera, Clementine Douglas, "Tell Me"

Just missing the Top 10 and rising 18-11 is “Tell Me” by Sonny Fodera and Clementine Douglas.

Kygo, One Republic, "Chasing Paradise"

Kygo’s collaboration with One Republic, “Chasing Paradise”, is also staring down the Top 10 and climbs 20-13.

Liam Wall, "Walking Red Flag"

Liam Wall’s affecting and melodic “Walking Red Flag” breaks out of the lower part of the chart and rises 21-15. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself singing along to this one in no time!

Magic Bronson, "Good Dogs"

Another great singalong and sure to put a smile on your face is “Good Dogs” by L.A. electronic rock duo Magic Bronson, which moves up 24-16.

The Weeknd, "Cry For Me"

The Weeknd it seems will be performing everywhere this year to support his latest album Hurry Up Tomorrow.  “Cry For Me” is a great choice for a single and rises 23-17.David Archuleta, "Freedom"

The Fastest Riser on the chart belongs to David Archuleta with his spirited version of George Michael’s “Freedom” soaring 26-18.

Benson Boone, "Sorry I'm Here For Someone Else"

The second of three new entries on the chart is “Sorry I’m Here For Someone Else”, another case of stellar songwriting for Benson Boone and team, and it arrives at #26. It’s already his 8th chart entry, since I first began supporting his music at the start, three years ago.

Michael Medrano, "Martini (Shots)"

The remaining new entry is “Martini (Shots)”, the anthemic house track by L.A.’s favourite disco dad Michael Medrano and his second, quite naughty album The Penthouse. It debuts at #27 and is his fourth chart entry to date.

BILLCS New Music Report – March 19/25 with new songs by Jay Bird, Mercer & Provi, Nathan Sykes, Jotti, Kacey Fifield, Shane Alexander, Boy Aries, and Landikhan & Isadora Mulvey

I have some upcoming travel again next week, and I hope to publish the next Report sometime on Wednesday March 26, which is a travel day for me. If this isn’t doable, then it may appear on Tuesday March 25 instead.  I hope not to cancel all together but that could happen too due to lack of preparation time.

As some of you know, my daughter, whose artist name is VXTORIA, has a dance music single coming soon, and this travel is related to that.  More about this exciting time soon!  In the meantime, enjoy this week’s Report!

In the Report, you can also check out my pick of the week, along with a record of the week from the host of online radio’s “Top 40 Timeline”, “Big Daddy” Russ Horton, plus “Modern Hype” online radio host DJ Hunter’s “Bop of the Week”.  “The Musicman” James Rogers, while vacationing in Australia, has sent in his Classic Five choices, which are from the classic pop years of 1969-1971! You’ll also find out what songs were on the BILLCS Top 30 this week in 2006!

Reminder:  Click on the photos below to listen to the songs, usually with a Spotify link.

Jay Bird, "Do It Like Me"

JAY BIRD, “Do It Like Me”

About the artist – Jay Bird is a familiar name to regular blog readers. He’s a Bay area dance producer whose sound lately has been refined into party-friendly house and deep house tracks.

About the record – “Do It Like Me” foregoes lyrical songwriting this time in favour of a repeated and very catchy two line verse. Jay Bird looks back to the 80’s for this one, highly reminiscent in song structure of the early days of house music. His one-two-three punches though are the two line verse, a distinct popping synth sound that you won’t here anywhere else, and a classic house riff. “Do It Like Me” is heaps of fun, and club DJ’s could spin it alongside songs by Fisher and Dombresky to keep the party going.

Other comments – “Do It Like Me” is one of Jay Bird’s best releases so don’t miss out on the fun! It’s included on Space Yacht’s compilation Tech My House Vol. 8.

Mercer, Provi, "Remember Me"

MERCER, PROVI, “Remember Me”

About the artists – Both are producers from France. I’ve written about the releases of Mercer (aka Nicolas Mercier) many times and he’s scored three #1’s on the BILLCS Top 30 with “The Only One” (with Cerrone), “Aretha” and “Satisfy”.  ‘Remember Me” follows up his EP Neo Disco 4. Provi (aka Anthony Provenzale) hasn’t been as recently prolific but had some popular dance releases in Europe.

About the record – “Remember Me” is a cover of the late 90’s European pop and North American dance club hit by The Blue Boy. It, like the original, samples a live recording by the late 70’s and 80’s R&B singer Marlena Shaw, “Woman of the Ghetto”. Mercer and Provi add a lot of disco house panache to update this memorable dance rave-up for clubs and festivals. It would actually make a solid companion to David Guetta and Sia’s recent release “Beautiful People”.

Other comments – Even in these days of streaming, there seem to be geographical lines with dance music culture, and the North American market could use some European crossover house pizzazz from songs like “Remember Me”.

Nathan Sykes, "Pieces of Me"

NATHAN SYKES, “Pieces Of Me”

About the artist – Nathan Sykes is the Gloucester-born singer/songwriter who is (was?) 1/5 of British vocal pop group The Wanted.  His debut 2016 solo album Unfinished Business reached #11 in the UK, and he had two North American dance hits, “Kiss Me Quick” (which also reached #3 on the BILLCS Top 30) and “Over and Over Again” (with former GF Ariana Grande).  Nathan released no music until The Wanted’s brief reunion before member Tom Parker’s sad passing from cancer in 2022.

About the record – “Pieces of Me” is a likeable, uplifting pop confection with a sweeping chorus which marks Nathan’s first solo work in nearly 9 years. He says that over the years he feels that people have only seen pieces of him, and that’s what the song is all about. And naturally when you’re in a high profile band like The Wanted, the music biz makes sure that people do only see what it wants you to see. So it makes perfect sense that this beautifully sung and produced release, co-written with Theo Hutchcraft of Hurts among others, is the launch to his comeback.

Other comments – While Nathan’s voice was one of The Wanted’s sweet secrets, I was rather taken aback with “Kiss Me Quick” in 2016 and how fine he sounded with a big, commanding voice as a solo artist.  “Pieces of Me” is a lovely mid-tempo track, but given his track record, I will bet that something more pronounced and defining is in the works, and hopefully we’ll see him tour too.

Jotti, "Sad for Life"

JOTTI, “Sad For Life”

About the artist – Jotti is the performing name for Kansas-born, L.A. based pop singer/songwriter Jot Singh. “Sad for Life” follows up his recent single “Like You’re Mine”.

About the record – Sure, “Sad for Life” is a sad song underneath its exterior. But that wrapping is a lilting, carefree mid-tempo acoustic guitar-led pop melody. And as with “Like You’re Mine”, Jotti’s pitch-perfect vocal goes a long way, with a nice touch of falsetto along the way, and the three minutes of “Sad for Life” just sail by.

Other comments – Jotti is quite active on social media, regularly giving tastes of his performing skills through his originals and some choice covers. But live performances are what’s needed to elevate his profile and win over audiences with his naturally charming voice.

Kacey Fifield, "Saving Face"

KACEY FIFIELD, “Saving Face”

About the artist – Currently attending university in New York City but hailing from Los Angeles, Kacey Fifield has been honing her craft as a versatile pop singer/songwriter these last four years. Her most recent releases, have included the energetic rocker “Hold Ur Peace” and the electronic pop ballad “Right Past Me”, both well written up in these blog pages!

About the record – “Saving Face” is an emotional, complex power pop ballad that’s all about bypassing the red flags that have appeared in a relationship to put on a false front for others and “save face”. Many of us have to do this at one time or another for various reasons, but Kacey’s lyrics and her committed vocal unfold the conflict underneath the happy face. The song features a big chorus, luscious synths and an 80’s flavoured melody that’s reminiscent of songs like Pat Benatar’s “We Belong” and The Bangles’ “Eternal Flame”.

Other comments – “Saving Face” is co-written and produced by L.A. musician David Hugo.

Shane Alexander, 'Whole Lotta Stars"

SHANE ALEXANDER, “Whole Lotta Stars”

About the artist – Based out of the Los Angeles area, Shane Alexander is a pop/folk multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter and producer who has been releasing music for the last 20 years.  He has opened for artists like Jewel, Styx, Suzanne Vega and Yes, had one of his songs featured prominently in a Chevrolet advertising campaign, and has played classic venues like The Ryman, Red Rocks, and The Greek Theatre. “Whole Lotta Stars” is among his first single releases since 2021.

About the record – The poignant melody of pedal steel guitar peppers the wide-eyed wonder of “Whole Lotta Stars” for those quiet moments in life when you wonder what else is out there and just soak in nature’s beauty. Shane’s earthy and earnest delivery, pristine production, and a variety of well-placed instruments (pedal steel, lap steel, glockenspiel, organ, saxophone) flesh out the song’s modest qualities into a much grander package.

Other comments – “Whole Lotta Stars” was recorded at Shane’s Buddhaland studio. There are 10 musicians/singers playing on this track, making quite a tight collective.  “Whole Lotta Stars” is released in advance of Shane’s upcoming album Forever Songs.

Boy Aries, "Shadow"

BOY ARIES, “Shadow”

About the artist – Boy Aries is Toronto-area singer and model Jordan Radics, who was the lead singer of the group BLAJK in the late 2010’s.  “Shadow” follows up his EP Sleep No More, which includes his single “Drive” (which reached #7 on the BILLCS Top 30).

About the song – Appropriately mysterious, “Shadow” uses Boy Aries’ deeper vocal tones to good advantage without making the song too bleak. The spoken-word parts certainly recall Pet Shop Boys’ Neil Tennant’s spoken/sung vocals in songs like “What Have I Done to Deserve This”. “Shadow” is a particularly refreshing track because it really doesn’t sound like anything out there, and maintains a rich fascination all to itself.

Other comments – Boy Aries recently performed a live set at The Rivoli in Toronto, but it was while I was travelling, so I hope we’ll get to see him perform again soon!

Landikhan, Isabella Mulvey, "Ride or Die"

LANDIKHAN, ISADORA MULVEY, “Ride or Die”

About the artists – Landikhan is a Madrid-based keyboardist, DJ and producer who has been honing his talents for many years in Spain. Isadora Mulvey is a rising singer/songwriter who performs regularly in Ibiza.

About the record – “Ride or Die” is a chill electronic track that reminds me of what Everything But The Girl first dove into in the late 90’s, alongside other British acts like Portishead and Massive Attack. Its feathery, hypnotic drum ‘n bass rhythm glides alongside Isadora’s touching, poised vocal in a song about the kind of friendship/relationship that continues on no matter what.

Other comments – “Ride or Die” is a pleasing, unique find in these days of excess music clutter. The artists need to work on augmenting their online profiles in order for their music to wider audiences. Don’t let “Ride or Die” slip by!

BILLCS New Music Report – March 13/25 with new songs by Justin Nozuka, Starsigns & RUNN, HarlowBardot, Parralox, Victor Perry, Sleepy Benjamin, Steven Thad, and Matthew Holtby

I’m back after an enjoyable three week visit to Australia, with new releases by a host of artists familiar to readers of this Report, some of whom we haven’t heard from in a while.

In the Report, you can also check out my pick of the week, along with a record of the week from the host of online radio’s “Top 40 Timeline”, “Big Daddy” Russ Horton, plus “Modern Hype” online radio host DJ Hunter’s “Bop of the Week”.  “The Musicman” James Rogers, while vacationing in Australia, has sent in his Classic Five choices, which are from 1973 and 1975! In case you missed them, you’ll find out what song is #1 and the Fastest Riser on the latest  BILLCS Top 30.

Reminder:  Click on the photos below to listen to the songs. If the song has a video, a You Tube link is now provided underneath the artist and song title.

Justin Nozuka, "Like Nobody Does"

JUSTIN NOZUKA, “Like Nobody Does”

About the artist – Based in Toronto, it’s hard to believe Justin Nozuka has been releasing music for 17 years, breaking out with “After Tonight” (a BILLCS Top 30 #1) when he was a teenager. He has released six alternative pop/R&B albums and five EP’s to date.

About the record – “Like Nobody Does” is culled from Justin’s new EP which he wrote and produced himself in his bedroom – not sure what’s it’s actually called, Dash, Hyphen, No Title, or Unnamed (using the – symbol)? – since he hasn’t said in his socials. If there’s anyone who can make you melt with a quiet ballad, it’s Justin, having proved this with past releases like “No One But You” (a duet with British singer Mahalia) and “By Your Side”, songs which provoke a hushed crowd when sung in concert. “Like Nobody Does” is simple and gorgeous, sung from deep-down within, like an old blues song, and you can hear influence from such artists as H.E.R. and Daniel Caesar.

Other comments – Justin has recently toured in North America and Europe and has many fans worldwide. He has released more music than ever in recent years and toured more often which is likely helping to sustain himself as an independent artist.

Starsigns, RUNN, "In My Mind"

STARSIGNS, RUNN, “In My Mind”

About the artists – Starsigns is the artist name for a collective of Asain-American dance producers – Manila Killa, MYRNE, and yetep. – who have released the EP Firesigns. Their single “Leo (Flicker)” (with George Gleeson) reached #3 on the BILLCS Top 30 in 2024. RUNN (aka Avena Savage) is a popular vocalist/songwriter choice for many of electronic dance music’s best producers, including Steve Aoki, ARMNHMR, Dabin, and William Black, and has been releasing music since 2017.

About the record – “In My Mind” is a popular dance release originally recorded in 2012 by Ivan Gough, Feenixpawl and Georgi Kay as “In My Mind”, which is often covered and played at festivals and in clubs. The mix of all of the talent on this record really elevates it as a cover, with RUNN’s memorable and affecting vocal and the song’s taut arrangement standing out. It’s certainly worth it for club DJ’s to give it a spin, and fans of the original will be pleased with this interpretation.

Other comments – I’m definitely digging the originals by Starsigns as well as this cover, and I hope the project continues to flourish!

HarlotBardot, "Nothing (Stays The Same)"

HarlowBardot, “Nothing (Stays The Same)”

About the artist – HarlowBardot is a new Toronto duo of friends who were a part of the 80’s alternative music scene, with the band name culled from the surnames of legendary movie stars Jean Harlow and Brigitte Bardot. Vocalist/lyricist Kinga released his first new music in many years, a remix of his 1980’s release “Sexy Boy” and an equally well-received new song, “Something’s Gotta Give”, in 2023.  Electronics whiz Marc Wonnacott is a founding member of Land of Giants, noted for their 1982 cult favourite “Cannibal Dolls”.

About the record – While 80’s influences pervade “Nothing (Stays The Same)”, the song is as contemporary a pop/dance release as anything released by a major label. Kinga’s rich and commanding vocal leads the way against an infectious melodic backdrop and an extremely catchy and memorable chorus. While there may be some resignation in one perspective of the song’s lyrics, another way to interpret them is to ride with and embrace the changes which in today’s world keep on happening faster than ever.

Other comments – Watch for “the crow mix” lyric video coming soon to You Tube. “Nothing (Stays The Same)” was co-written by Kinga and Marc with fellow Toronto musician Rob Stuart.

Parralox, "Teardrop"

PARRALOX, “Teardrop”

About the artist – A creation of synthesizer player and producer John Von Ahlen, Parralox has been offering electronic treats, both original and covers, during the last 15 years. The original “Aeronaut” reached #4 on the BILLCS Top 30, while Parralox has also worked with such singers as Marcella Detroit and Jane Badler.

About the record – “Teardrop” is an ambitious cover of the 90’s Massive Attack favourite and is clearly not intended to be a copy. As ever, John’s reverence to the music of the original track is impeccable. And while The Cocteau Twins’ Elizabeth Fraser lent a special nuance to her rendition, Louise Love interprets the song with more of a pop flavour while still retaining the mystery and mood of the original.

Other comments – “Teardrop” is from Parralox’s forthcoming Holiday ’25 project and follows the recent release of “Steppin’ Out”, Joe Jackson’s 1982 hit redone with a minimalist-sounding electronic track but capturing its spirit and uniqueness.

Victor Perry, "Runaway Lover"

VICTOR PERRY, “Runaway Lover”

About the artist – Victor Perry is a pop/R&B singer/songwriter based in New York City who has released songs with numerous dance music producers.  I’ve been writing about his music since 2016. His dance release with Italian producer Lordnox, “Myself In You”, reached #1 on the BILLCS Top 30.

About the record – “Runaway Lover” is a lilting mid-tempo song which features a velvety vocal by Victor.  He took a step back from releasing solo songs in 2024 but “Runaway Lover” shows him back in strong form with a new set of collaborators. Here a story unfolds about a guy who isn’t wanting commitment and hops from relationship to relationship, perhaps hoping to find true love one day.

Other comments – “Runaway Lover” is another top-quality release from Victor. An educator by day, his other passion is wrestling, which you can read about in his socials.

Sleepy Benjamin, "Pear Cider"

SLEEPY BENJAMIN, “Pear Cider”

About the artist – Sleepy Benjamin is a pop artist from the Brisbane, Australia area who has been releasing his own music for the last three years.  His songs often touch on the theme of mental well-being, while his musical style can shift from funky and mysterious to bright and engaging.

About the record – “Pear Cider” is full of summery vibes, a delightful slice of power pop designed to put you in a great mood, as perhaps one too many glasses of the title drink might do. The song finds Benjamin’s vocal in head voice for the first part, which adds to the uplifting tone of the song, which ultimately is about spending some quality escape time with someone you care about.

Other comments – Like last year’s “3 Words”, this one totally suits Sleepy Benjamin’s laid back, carefree style which is worth continuing on future releases.

Steven Thad, "Smile"

STEVEN THAD, “Smile”

About the artist – Steven Thad is an indie American R&B/pop singer/songwriter from the DMV (Delaware/Maryland/Virginia) area. I introduced you to Steven’s music at the top of 2022, and he’s been recently promoting his new music to UK and European audiences.

About the record – It’s been more than a year without a North American release for Steven, but his new original, “Smile”, has been worth the wait. Steven’s good-natured sound channels 90’s favourites like Us3 and Arrested Development on “Smile”, which is a fusion of funky jazz, R&B and pop. His vocal here is more sophisticated than in the past and reminds me of singers like Tevin Campbell and Miguel, as well as with likely influences from his favourite, Beyoncé, and perhaps Alicia Keys.

Other comments – “Smile” shows considerable growth in style and panache from Steven’s earlier releases and he continues to be a talent to watch.

Matthew Holtby, "Give Me a Reason"

MATTHEW HOLTBY, “Give Me a Reason”

About the artist – Matthew Holtby is a musician from a small town in Ontario called Warkworth, and fuses classic rock styles often with country music flavours.

About the song – “Give Me a Reason” is a bit of a 90’s throwback to the successful jangly rock of artists like Third Eye Blind, Counting Crows, Matchbox Twenty, and especially fellow Canadians Barenaked Ladies, taking a few steps away from some of his recent releases which were more in the country genre. Matthew’s earnest, relatable lyrics and warm vocal make “Give Me a Reason” a winner for addition to your contemporary rock playlists.

Other comments – Matthew frequently plays in big cities and small towns in Southern Ontario, so be sure to catch his set in concert.

BILLCS Top 30 #713 – March 10/25

Back from Australia and missing the people and the laid back culture, if not the travelling getting to and from there, but I’m sure the next time will be better in that regard.

NOTE: I will be gradually phasing out the You Tube links for the songs on the chart for accessibility purposes. With this week’s new entries, the links in the photos are now Spotify links.

Lady Gaga, "Abracadabra"

It’s the biggest jump to #1 in a while, but it couldn’t happen to a nicer song or artist.  Lady Gaga gets her first #1 in nearly five years with “Abracadabra” (11-1, above, also the Fastest Riser on the chart for the second time) from her excellent new album MAYHEM. It’s all about a brief return to The Fame Monster/Born This Way era, which are many fans’ favourites.  It’s Gaga’s third #1 entry, following 2010’s “Teeth” and 2020’s “Rain On Me” (with Ariana Grande, also my #1 song of 2020).  Another solid track from MAYHEM to keep your ears out for is “Vanish Into You” (below).

Anyma, Ellie Goulding, "Hypnotized"

We’ll see how long “Abracadabra” stays at #1, but Anyma and Ellie Goulding’s “Hypnotized” climbs 9-4 to join it in the Top 5, becoming both artists’ first Top 5 entries.

"Heart First", Lucas & Steve, Jordan Shaw

Also in the Top 5 for the first time are Dutch producers Lucas & Steve with “Heart First” (7-5). Singer/songwriter Jordan Shaw however has been all the way to the Top before in 2021 with Boye & Sigvardt on “Microdose”.

Damiano David, "Born With A Broken Heart"

Damiano David’s “Born With A Broken Heart” climbs 10-8 and may not be one of the very biggest hits of the year, but it’s a timeless song that will endure, so when you come back to it again in five years you can thank me then!

MGR Mike, Milton V, "The Message"

Also new to the Top 10 is “The Message” by Nashville producer MGR Mike and Brazilian producer Milton V, climbing 15-9. It’s one of the most memorable songs of the year featuring an enthusiastic, inspiring speech from 2021 by boxer Ricky Turcios that revs the song up for its pulsating rhythm and melody.

Henri PFR, "Up In The Sky"

“Up In The Sky” by Belgian producer Henri PFR rises 14-11 and is another uplifting earworm that I can’t get enough of right now.

John Summit, CLOVES, "Focus"

It looks like John Summit is on his way to the Top 10 again with “Focus”, featuring vocals by co-writer CLOVES.  Congrats to John for posting that he has completed his most recent tour alcohol-free. I urge other dance producers to follow suit to experience what they do best on a real level.

Sonny Fodera, Clementine Douglas, "Tell Me"

Sonny Fodera just finished up a month long #1 run with “Somedays”, which tumbles to #10.  His new one with uber-talented Clementine Douglas, “Tell Me”, is off to a fine start, soaring 26-18.

Some newer songs have got stuck in a log jam in the 20’s which should begin to break loose in two weeks, and there are two new entries.

David Archuleta, "Freedom"

Following last year’s #3 entry “Afraid To Love” in its euphoric alternative mix with Willy Beaman, David Archuleta returns to the chart with his splendid and inspiring cover of George Michael’s “Freedom” at #26.  Don’t expect him to sound like George though – David gives this one his all in an otherwise faithful and playful rendition.

Jude York, "After The Opera"

Also returning to the chart following last year’s #2 surprise “Monaco”, Australia’s Jude York brings us his affecting dance-pop track “After The Opera” at #27.

BILLCS Top 30 #712 – February 24/25

The BILLCS Top 30 is a bit late owing to my travels in Australia, which puts me 16 hours behind my regular time.  I only  have commentary for this edition about the new additions to the chart.

Leading the four is “Cry For Me” by The Weeknd at #25, from the album that closes off his trilogy, Hurry Up Tomorrow. It’s The Weeknd’s 11th chart entry and first since 2022.

Next at #26 is what is shaping up to be a major pop/dance smash, “Tell Me” by Sonny Fodera with vocalist Clementine Douglas.  Sonny of course has a second appearance at #1 with “Somedays” with Jazzy and D.O.D. But “Tell Me” is his second entry with Clementine – their first was 2021’s “Angel” which got to #4.

The third new entry at #27 is the good-natured fun of “Good Dogs” by L.A. alternative rock duo Magic Bronson from the album of the same name. Don’t sleep on this one folks!  I think this would appeal to fans of Foster The People, Saint Motel and Weezer.

Rounding out the new ones at #30 is “In My Head”, a new collaboration by Gryffin and Kaskade with vocals by Nu La.  It’s Gryffin’s follow up to last year’s “Last Of Us” with Rita Ora, which got to #3.  It’s Kaskade’s first appearance on the chart since his project with Deadmau5, Kx5, got to #8 with Sofi Tukker on “Sacrifice”.

BILLCS New Music Report – February 13/25 with new songs by Magic Bronson, David Archuleta, Jude York, The Disco Fries x MINTD x KAYRAE, Lyra, Benjamin Russell, Gene Champagne, and Four Nights

As I get ready to travel to Australia early next week, this is the last BILLCS New Music Report until I return, which means that the next usual publishing date will be Wednesday, March 12. Any submissions that I receive will be placed in the queue until then, and naturally I’ll be continuing to listen while I’m away (especially on the very long flights to and from!). I look forward to visiting Melbourne, Sydney and Bribie Island (off the coast of Brisbane), and hopefully can check out a couple of club shows along the way!

In the Report, you can also check out my pick of the week, along with a record of the week from the host of online radio’s “Top 40 Timeline”, “Big Daddy” Russ Horton, plus “Modern Hype” online radio host DJ Hunter’s “Bop of the Week”.  “The Musicman” James Rogers, while vacationing in Australia, has sent in his Classic Five choices, all from the early 80’s! In case you missed them, you’ll find out what songs were #1 and the Fastest Riser on the latest  BILLCS Top 30.

Reminder:  Click on the photos below to listen to the songs. If the song has a video, a You Tube link is now provided underneath the artist and song title.

Magic Bronson, "Good Dogs"

MAGIC BRONSON, “Good Dogs”

About the artist:  Magic Bronson is an L.A.-based electronic pop duo (Michael Nicastro and Matthew Lieberman) specializing in pulsating rhythms without sacrificing an indie sound.  “Good Dogs” is the title track from their first album in four years.

About the record: “Good Dogs” will easily put a smile on your face. It’s a good-natured song that might make you think of our happy canine friends, but is more of an affectation for some of our human friends. Magic Bronson straddles electronics in the same way as other groups like fellow L.A. denizens Capital Cities, and puts a new spin on a big rock sound that has been trademarked by Imagine Dragons over the last decade. There’s an equal emphasis on melody as there is on rhythm and beats. Everything melds together in a delightful mix of ear candy that you’ll keep spinning.

Other comments: “Good Dogs” is chock full of fun without being a novelty, and a great way to get to know the music of Magic Bronson.

David Archuleta, "Freedom"

DAVID ARCHULETA, “Freedom”

About the artist: One-time “American Idol” runner-up David Archuleta has been embracing the pop/dance genre in the last few years, which culminated in an EP of remixes for his infectious 2024 single “Afraid To Love”, which reached #3 on the BILLCS Top 30. He’s also become more visible on TV and in the public eye in the last year, which was spurred by his appearance on “The Masked Singer”.

About the record: “Freedom” is a faithful cover of the George Michael release from 1990, which has found more favour in recent years as a queer anthem than at time of release and of course since George’s passing in 2016. It’s a great choice, and David makes no bones about not trying to ape George’s soulful style in favour of his own fine tones.  The arrangement is similarly euphoric to the original, including the choral backing vocals, and the lyrics make a home run for David after coming out a few years back. I’m glad David has got to rework “Freedom” his way, and fans of the original will be mighty pleased.

Other comments: “Freedom” is a missed opportunity for a major label to jump in and market it to terrestrial radio and give their stale playlists a much needed boost, with a song that would light up request lines.  I’m hoping some remixes are in the making, too!

Jude York, "After The Opera"

JUDE YORK, “After The Opera”

Video link:  Opera

About the artist:  Last year, Australia’s Jude York broke through the invisible curtain by getting signed to Spinnin’ Records for his self-penned, self-produced dance track “Monaco”, which reached #2 on the BILLCS Top 30.

About the record: “After The Opera” follows it up with a unique perspective – a relationship with an ex mirroring the story in an opera – and Jude weaves a sad, relatable tale about living “the same sad song” over and over again before it ended. The song definitely strikes the heart strings, with a touching vocal by Jude, but hey it’s got a peppy beat too and you can dance to it, so enjoy the cathartic release!

Other comments:  “After The Opera” is more of a pop record than a dance record but it’s a handsome hybrid all the same.

The Disco Fries, MINTD, JAYRAE, "Never Mine"

THE DISCO FRIES, MINTD, KAYRAE, “Never Mine”

About the artists:  The Disco Fries are a veteran NYC-based dance production team and record label owners (Liftoff Recordings) who have graced these blog pages as well as the BILLCS Top 30 many times.  MINTD is a new production duo on their second release, while KAYRAE is an L.A.-based singer/songwriter who has during the last decade recorded solo and worked with the likes of Kaskade, KDrew and Morgin Madison.

About the record: “Never Mine” is The Disco Fries’ first new music since 2023 with a cool, progressive, deep house sound with some chill moments, and a collaboration with new producers MINTD brings it all to fruition, undoubtedly with some fresh perspective.  KAYRAE’s vocal reminds me a lot of Ellie Goulding and her work with Calvin Harris.  The pace only lets up to highlight KAYRAE’s vocal, otherwise “Never Mine” is full of dramatic lustre which provides an intriguing contrast to the vocal, and it all adds up nicely.

Other comments: “Never Mine” has plenty of sync possibilities, particularly for video games and animation.

Lyra, "Freak"

LYRA, “Freak”

About the artist:  Irish singer/songwriter Lyra is a superstar in her home country. Her debut self-titled album went to #1 on the Irish charts in 2024, and you’ve read about her songs like “Falling”, “The Ending” and “Chess” in these blog pages. That album was a compendium of songs from the last five years, and “Freak” is the first single to follow the album.

About the record:  With its self-explanatory title, “Freak” is a winning empowerment anthem about self-worth, directed particularly at women. Its riveting rhythm carried by dark synths and beats takes you straight to the dance floor where you can let loose and do anything you want and make it your safe space. It’s a significant change up from songs about love and heartbreak on her album, and that’s not a bad thing at all.

Other comments: Lyra says:  “This is a song about being a sexy ass powerful woman. As a woman I have been told “be sexy but not too sexy”, well fuck that. This song is all about the power of a woman’s sexuality. Bring your ego to the dance floor.”

Benjamin Russell, "One Step (The Time Is Now)"

BENJAMIN RUSSELL, “One Step (The Time Is Now)”

About the artist:  Prolific alternative electronic Montreal artist Benjamin Russell returns with his latest 12 song album Waves, which continues to deliberately blur the boundaries between pop, rock, electronic, jazz and classical genres. The album is meant to be taken as a whole, to be heard from start to finish, where you’ll notice some common themes and a variety of inspirations.

About the record: “One Step” to me is the standout track on Waves. Co-written with his wife Elyse, Benjamin’s keen and expressive vocal and a bright melody keep you listening as the song works its way through an example of a daily grind of its own. Disagreements occur, tempers flare, but in the end, everyone is heard, which leads to a peaceful and encouraging resolution, as well as acting on it now – walk through that door and make it happen.

Other comments: There are many layers and stylistic shifts in Waves that require your objectivity and attention, and you will easily find something in its songs for yourself.

Gene Champagne, "Yummy Yummy Yummy"

GENE CHAMPAGNE, “Yummy Yummy Yummy”

Video link:  Yummy

About the artist:  Gene Champagne is a Hamilton-based singer and drummer who was a founder of the Juno Award winning 90’s alternative rock band The Killjoys, noted for their hits “Soaked”, “Rave + Drool” and “Dana”.  Since 2016, he’s been the drummer for Canadian rock mainstays, Teenage Head, and is also the drummer for The Black Halos.

About the record: I didn’t quite know what to expect as I approached listening to a new version of bubblegum pop classic from my childhood. “Yummy Yummy Yummy” was the biggest hit for mirth-makers Ohio Express in 1968, reaching #4 in the US and #1 in Canada, followed by the equally catchy “Chewy Chewy”.  Fortunately, Gene knows how to frame the song properly with post-punk power pop energy and attitude, and makes it a well-sung, well-played welcome blast from the past without bells and whistles needed in the production. A couple of points of reference for fans of the post-punk late 70’s, early 80’s would be fellow Canadians The Diodes’ cover of The Cyrcle’s “Red Rubber Ball” or The Clash’s update of Bobby Fuller Four’s “I Fought The Law”.

Other comments:  In our increasingly weird year of 2025, “Yummy Yummy Yummy” does not sound out of place at all. College and alternative radio stations will have the most fun with it.  Add it to your own playlist of edgy rock cover versions!

Four Nights, "Do You Feel The Same Way?"

FOUR NIGHTS, “Do You Feel The Same Way”

About the artist:  Four Nights is the moniker for Irish indie bedroom artist Tommy Buckley, and its his third release within the last several months.  His catchy pop/dance track “Want You Always” previously reached #8 on the BILLCS Top 30.

About the record:  The project of Four Nights is brimming with authenticity in “Do You Feel The Same Way” as Tommy invites listeners to explore true-to-life lyrics that take a snapshot of a precious moment in a relationship. The magic of discovery is always an immediate draw in a song, which here is sung with a lot of conviction.

Other comments: Never underestimate the power of an indie pop song, and Tommy keeps it fresh and real.
