“Remember” is a touching and hopeful song in the face of adversity by British singer/songwriter @JulesRendell

JULES RENDELL, “Remember” (live performance)

This past Spring, I introduced you to British singer/songwriter Jules Rendell and her song “The Return” from her album I M A G I N E.  A great way to showcase songs is through live performance, and Jules does this, with just her piano and voice, in a concert rendition of “Remember” from the same album.  And with a powerful and passionate voice, that is all that a song like “Remember” needs – simple isn’t always easy to do but it is sometimes what works best.  It’s a hopeful song about remembering the loving and caring words that friends and family say when facing some sort of adversity, and in particular when mental health is the source, when people may not knowingly take the words to heart.  That’s all there is to say – just check out the video above and find out why.

WORLD PREMIERE: Listen to Victor Perry (@perksofbeingvic) sing a gorgeous unplugged cover of @EBTG’s classic “Missing”

VICTOR PERRY, “Missing”

Georgia pop/R&B singer Victor Perry shows off two of his major talents in this stripped down cover of Everything But The Girl’s 1995 smash “Missing” – his slick ability as an interpreter and his beautiful high register.  Of course “Missing” is best known as a pop and dance hit thanks to an historic remix by Todd Terry, which transformed and reinvented the slower, more emotional acoustic original from the Amplified Heart album.  Victor turns it back down with piano for support (courtesy of dad/producer William Perry Jr.) and the result is very special, which Everything But The Girl/Tracey Thorn/Ben Watt fans will love, as Victor’s take conveys a similar emotional vibe to the original.  And just when you think that’s not enough, he lets his high register take off for most of the last minute of the song to give a gorgeous, long-lasting coda that you would have never expected.  And this all came about thanks to a Twitter chat Victor and I had about some of our favourite 90’s records:  I sent “Missing” his way, he fell in love with it, and voilà! 🙂  Thanks for running with it Victor and putting your own signature stamp on “Missing” 😀  Also be sure to check out Victor’s debut EP 4 AM Nostalgia.  Listen to “Missing” at the above link.

Irresistibly gorgeous new ballad from @JonMcLaughlin “Before You”

JON McLAUGHLIN, “Before You”

Something tells me a new Jon McLaughlin album is on the way 🙂  And if “Before You” is the start of it all, we are in for some great music ahead.  There aren’t many ballads that I hear right out of the box that have WOW factor, but “Before You” is a rare exception.  It’s a taut ballad that progresses beautifully with one of the powerful piano man’s top notch vocals.  I’ve enjoyed so much of Jon’s past music (including my year end #1 of 2008 “Beating My Heart” and 2011’s Promising Promises album, which morphed out of the Forever If Ever indie release), and “Before You” ranks up there with the best of his music.  A U.S. tour has been announced as well (I’m hoping Jon saves room for Canada too in his sked 😉 ) so be sure to check to see if Jon McLaughlin is returning to a city near you!
