BILLCS Top 30 #744 – May 18/26 featuring songs by Will Swinton, Zayn, Nicola Nicoletti, Lights, Conan Gray and more!

There are still some tight spots in edition 744 of my bi-weekly chart, which are holding back some songs I’m enjoying because other songs I like better are moving up faster. While the songs in the lock-jam may not go as high as I expected them to reach, they will still get their due. I don’t subscribe to moving songs off the chart before their time just to stay in the flow of a ridiculously fast-paced music biz.

Check out information about my ONLINE RADIO SHOWS after the chart commentary below as they are directly tied in with this blog.  As most of you know, I host 3 online radio shows – the all-Canadian The MAPL Tapes, and two iterations of Your Weekend New Music Mix – and produce 2 online radio segments – my new music and retro picks of the week – that are all pre-recorded. The MAPL Tapes, and the picks of the week are happily being syndicated and you can find the current schedule for all at the bottom of the home page of this blog.

Will Swinton, "Better Off"

Aside from playing shows with MGK in Australia and New Zealand, Will Swinton has been previewing new music again on his Instagram for interested followers. In the meantime, “Better Off” holds on tightly to #1 for a second appearance.

Zayn, "Sideways"

Zayn’s “Sideways” is likely now my favourite song by him, from his latest album KONNAKOL, and it makes short work of the Top 10 by climbing 9-2 with designs on the top in two weeks.

Nicola Nicoletti, "Perfect's Overrated"

Also in the mix is Nicola Nicoletti’s “Perfect’s Overrated” from his debut album Gilded. The song climbs 6-3. Nicola has my vote for Czechia’s EuroVision performance next year!!

Lights, "Come and Get Your Girl"

Lights is currently on a tour of the UK and Europe, and her recent single, the rollicking “Come and Get Your Girl”, leaps 8-4.

Stephen Sanchez, "Sweet Love"

Stephen Sanchez gets his second Top 10 entry with “Sweet Love” (above) rising 11-9. There are more equally good songs in his latest album Love Love Love, and the album track “Already Got Me” particularly deserves your attention below.

The James Clark Institute, "Reluctantly in Love"

Toronto area band The James Clark Institute played a lively set downtown on Saturday evening to a small but appreciative crowd. Their earworm “Reluctantly in Love”, which I heard first more than a year ago in concert, climbs 13-10.

Tiesto, Brieanna Grace, "Beautiful Places"

One of the songs currently stuck in my head is “Beautiful Places” by Tiësto and Brieanna Grace, which moves up 17-11.

MashBit, Navan, "Embrasse-moi (Mara Beboos)"

“Embrasse-moi (Mara Beboos)” by MashBit and Navan, and sung in both French and Farsi, leaps 22-17. Toronto area singer Navan is performing at The Great Hall in Toronto on Sunday August 16, so be sure to get a ticket for what is bound to be a highly unique and entertaining show!

Conan Gray, "Door"

The Fastest Riser on the chart is the album track “Door” (above) by Conan Gray from the deluxe edition of Wishbone. It soars 26-18, while the single “The Best” (below) continues to rise, up 18-15.

Hayla, "Heal"

While she already has another single coming out on Friday called “Enough”, Hayla climbs 29-23 with the beautiful EDM ballad “Heal”.

Sombr, "Potential"

Sombr’s “Potential” has a lot to prove in the shadow of my recent #1 “Homewrecker”, but it’s off to a good start, rising 30-24.

Jessie Ware, "Sauna"

Jessie Ware is back with her sixth album Superbloom, and the sum of its parts are better than the singles which were culled from it. So yes, I’m supporting an album track that will be a lot of fun in concert called “Sauna”, which is the Highest Debut at #27. It’s her 14th chart entry and first since 2023.

Johnny Orlando, "Charlotte"

Canadian talent Johnny Orlando is now an independent performer after being signed to a major label since he was 15. His new music may be the best of his career, and “Charlotte” bows at #28. It’s from his upcoming album  Songs for Young Lovers.

Jorge Wilson, "This Means Nothing (To Me)"

The recent #3 “Gemini” obviously was not enough, so Stoke-on-Trent, UK’s Jorge Wilson arrives on the chart for a second time with “This Means Nothing (To Me)” at #29. It’s from his new EP called JPW.

Moonwood, "Casanova"

The last new entry at #30 is a follow up to the #12 entry “Where Are The Kids?”. It’s another fine rocker from Australia’s Moonwood called “Casanova”. It’s the band’s fourth chart entry.
