BILLCS New Music Report – December 18/24 with new songs by Crash Adams, Mergui (in a Sam Feldt edit), James Carter & Lucas Estrada, Chesney Hawkes, Kouss & Liz Huett, Nathalie Miranda, Jon Mullane, and Blair Gilmour

2024 is almost history, and this is my last Report until January 8, 2025. Coming up before the year end is the annual year-end list, this time it’s my Top 90 Songs of 2024, which will be accompanied by an online radio program of the Top 30 songs, and I will post about that over the holidays. I’ll also continue to post previous episodes of “The Big 20” new music show for you to enjoy.

If you have any suggestions for this blog, don’t hesitate to hit me up on one of my socials at the following Linktree link www.linktr.ee/billcs777, or email me directly bill@billcsmusic.blog.

In the Report, you can also check out my pick of the week, along with a record of the week from the host of online radio’s “Top 40 Timeline”, “Big Daddy” Russ Horton, plus “Modern Hype” online radio host DJ Hunter’s “Bop of the Week”.  “The Musicman” James Rogers’ Classic Five is another splash of hits from the early 80’s and the early 90’s this week. If you missed them on Monday, you’ll find out what songs are #1 and the Fastest Riser on the BILLCS Top 30!

Reminder:  Click on the photos below to watch the video or listen to the songs.

Crash Adams, "Optimist"

CRASH ADAMS, “Optimist”

About the artist: Raf and Vince, who comprise Crash Adams, are on their way to being one of Canada’s biggest exports. Since I started writing about Crash Adams in 2020, they have gone on to play to huge audiences in places like Singapore and the Philippines, while also creating entertaining videos.

Strong points:  I was lucky to first hear “Optimist” at their show in my city in September. It’s a song full of sentiment about challenges both of the guys have faced, and they pass on their genuine hope and appreciation for their fans in person. It shows a flip side of Crash Adams that we don’t often hear (for example on “Symphony”), particularly after a rollicking no-holds-barred success that was “Hotel Party” (which was a personal best for them on the BILLCS Top 30, peaking at #7) this past summer.

Other comments: Crash Adams was nominated for Breakthrough Group at this year’s Juno Awards – expect more nominations next Spring. They need more targeted support by the biz at home so that they can parallel their overseas success. Super nice, talented guys CAN finish first! Watch the video by clicking the photo above, which was shot in Dubai!

Mergui, "On My Mind" (Sam Feldt edit)

MERGUI, “On My Mind” (Sam Feldt edit)

About the artist: Jonathan Mergui is a 24 year old L.A.-based, Israel-born pop singer who won second place to Eurovision winner Netta in Israel’s Rising Star TV competition show. His first English language release happened in 2022, and he’s making waves as one of the few artists signed to the powerful Saban Music Group.

Strong points:  Mergui’s vocal is carefree, dreamy and impressive, and he co-wrote and co-produced “On My Mind”. The song is engaging electro pop and moves along quickly, either in its original version or the Sam Feldt edit. The red hot Dutch producer adds some bounce to the mix which makes it a natural for dance radio airplay as well as club and festival play. You’ll have “On My Mind” stuck in your head and on your playlist in no time.

Other comments: With distribution through Universal, Mergui’s talents could be well-established by the end of 2025. “On My Mind” is a great song to get him there.

James Carter, Lucas Estrada, "Falls Down"

JAMES CARTER, LUCAS ESTRADA, “Falls Down”

About the artists:  They’re two dance producers, better established in Europe than in North America. It’s been a while since I’ve written about music by either, who have also collaborated several times, with James Carter hailing from the UK and Lucas Estrada from Sweden. Lucas is also the erstwhile head of renown dance music label Loudkult, and highly supportive of new talent.

Strong points:  “Falls Down” is classic deep house and goes down so easy. The uncredited male vocal lifts the song even more, giving it a moody, atmospheric vibe that doesn’t appear in a lot of deep house tracks. James and Lucas can continue to make cohesive collabs like this and there will be a lot of happy club DJ’s.

Other comments: “Falls Down” can accompany recent releases by the likes of TELYKast, Matoma, and Purple Disco Machine comfortably on your deep house playlists.

Chesney Hawkes, "Live Forever"

CHESNEY HAWKES, “Live Forever”

About the artist: Now based in L.A., UK-born singer/songwriter Chesney Hawkes had a #1 smash in the UK and #10 hit in North America with “The One and Only” in 1991. He remains well-known in the UK, having appeared on TV reality shows and releasing a multi-disc compilation album called The Complete Picture in 2022. He’s about to unveil his first new album in years called Living Arrows.

Strong points:  The theme of living forever and giving into temptation is always enticing. In “Live Forever”, Chesney sings about giving it “one last shot to steal the show”, a pop star through and through who wants everyone to be rocking. He’s got a timeless, ageless voice, and purveyors of fine pop songs can do no wrong with the infectious hook of “Live Forever”.

Other comments: Like “The One and Only” and some other Chesney Hawkes songs, “Live Forever” is co-written by the immensely talented Nik Kershaw (1984’s “Wouldn’t It Be Good”), who I saw perform in my city in 1985 (me, my buddy and a venue full of screaming girls and young women), and in fact has recently been touring Europe. What about hitting key North American cities for some club shows on a double bill, or even one of those retro-themed cruises, guys?

Kouss, Liz Huett, "Never Be Nothing"

KOUSS, LIZ HUETT, “Never Be Nothing”

About the artists:  Kouss is a Florida-based dance producer, a former drummer who turned to production after an accident prevented him from playing. Liz Huett began as a singer in Taylor Swift’s band as well as on her albums Speak Now and Red, but has been a solo artist for the last seven years.

Strong points:  “Never Be Nothing” is a throwback to the mid-2010’s – a period of time for highly melodic dance music that will start getting its due next year thanks to artists as diverse as Zedd, The Chainsmokers, Chet Porter and San Holo. The tropical flourishes in the hook are bright and ear-catching, with Liz Huett’s bright vocal alternately sounding carefree and determined. The song is a fond recollection of a past romance where the protagonist is stuck in her memories and unable to move on.

Other comments:  Kouss has created a well-rounded follow up to last year’s “Can’t Hold Back”, and this year’s “Lifeline”. I enjoy how its melody stands out while the lyrics firmly hold their own.

Nathalie Miranda, "Jamais"

NATHALIE MIRANDA, “Jamais”

About the artist: Nathalie Miranda is a versatile pop singer based in London, whose last release was the fun, bluesy belter “U Got Soul”. She has also recorded in Spanish, and “Jamais” is her first single sung in French.

Strong points:  “Jamais” (which means “Never”) oozes determination and inspiration as a parallel to Nathalie’s tenacity in her music career. Her phrasing is eloquent and on point, and the song is easy to understand for basic French speakers too. The arrangement for the first part of the song is understated, preparing the listener for a memorable, rocking climax where Natalie’s emotional vocal can really let loose, as we have previously heard in “U Got Soul”.

Other comments: French-speaking listeners in France, Belgium, Canada (especially Quebec) and other countries particularly will enjoy “Jamais”.  Tchin tchin!

Jon Mullane, "Holiday Star 2024"

JON MULLANE, “Holiday Star 2024”

About the artist:  Jon Mullane is a pop singer, songwriter and guitarist from Halifax, Nova Scotia who appeared in this blog most recently with his releases “Walking Away” and “Sun In The Summertime”.

Strong points:  “Holiday Star 2024” provides all of the necessary related imagery, warmth, fascination and hope that you could want in a Christmas song. It’s about being together with the ones you love during the holidays and making your unique wish on a star. It’s a feel-good song that deserves a place on your holiday playlist!

Other comments: Jon is extremely consistent from release-to-release. As one might expect, “Holiday Star 2024” is smoothly produced and beautifully sung.

Blair Gilmour, "Burning Up"

BLAIR GILMOUR, “Burning Up”

About the artist:  Blair Gilmour is an 18 year old singer/songwriter who hails from south-west Scotland. He favours writing spontaneously to capture the essence of the moment. “Burning Up” is his debut release.

Strong points:  “Burning Up” features an energetic performance by Blair.  The guitar-driven melody and overall sound are distinct and polished, but solid and familiar-sounding enough to evoke comparisons to other current young guns like Alexander Stewart, Dean Lewis, and various members of Why Don’t We. The song is about going to extremes during that time of mutual attraction, when you want to sacrifice even your well-being for a shot at love.

Other comments: “Burning Up” is a top notch debut and I’ll be looking forward to hearing what else Blair Gilmour has to offer us.

#BILLCSTop30 #707 – December 16/24

Edition 707 puts a wrap on the BILLCS Top 30 for 2024. Of course, I’ll have one more chart in two weeks that will count towards 2025, and I’ll be focusing on preparing this year’s Top 90 of 2024 and accompanying radio program, so do watch for all of the good things to come in the next two weeks!

Check out information about my ONLINE RADIO SHOWS after the chart below as they are now directly tied in with this blog.  As most of you know, I host 3 online radio shows – The Big 20 and two iterations of Your Weekend New Music Mix – and produce 2 online radio segments – my new music and retro picks of the week – that are all pre-recorded. The Big 20 and the picks of the week are happily being syndicated and you can find the current schedule for all at the bottom of the home page of this blog.

TELYKast, Sam Gray, "Surrender Your Love"

TELYKast and Sam Gray find themselves with another chart-topper as the classic deep house sounds of “Surrender Your Love” (above) joins 2021/22’s “Unbreakable” as their second #1 song together!!  You can also check out TELYKast’s latest release “All I Know”, below.

TELYKast, "All I Know"

Swedish House Mafia, Alicia Keys, "Finally"

Hot on the heels of “Surrender Your Love” is “Finally” by Swedish House Mafia with an outstanding vocal by Alicia Keys, and it climbs 8-3. Swedish House Mafia has only charted three times on this chart, and each time they have reached the Top 3, including #1 with “Don’t You Worry Child”. As for Ms Keys, she reached #1 with 2004’s “You Don’t Know My Name”.

PLS&TY, David Frank, "Breakaway"

PLS&TY and Georgi Kay’s “Feel Love” (above) is locked in at #4 again, and you can check out PLS&TY’s recent single with Linney called “Just One Touch”, below.

PLS&TY, Linney, "Just One Touch"

Bud Cahill, "Intergalactic Highway"

Bud Cahill’s imaginative “Intergalactic Highway” is one of the rare instrumentals – with big props to Bud’s violin work – to reach my Top 10, and it rises 11-8.

Duran Duran, "Evil Woman"

Duran Duran’s Simon LeBon has rarely sounded better in recent years than on “Evil Woman”, their remake of the 1976 ELO hit. It climbs 14-9, becoming their first Top 10 entry in 13 years since “All You Need Is Now” peaked at #8.

Dan Talevski, "mine"

Canadian singer/songwriter Dan Talevski is now 5 for 5 with his Top 10 entries on my chart as the unusual and touching “mine”, his first entry since 2017, makes short work of the chart, climbing 16-10.

Ekonovah, "Take Me Home"

Phoenix dance producer charges through the middle of the chart with his second entry, the busy and disco-influenced “Take Me Home”, which rises 18-12.

GT_Ofice, "Someone Else"

The euphoric 2010’s retro VIP mix of GT_Ofice’s “Someone Else” looks to be headed for the Top 10 as it climbs 21-15.

Sonny Fodera, Jazzy, D.O.D., "Somedays"

The Fastest Riser on the chart is the worldwide dance smash “Somedays” by Sonny Fodera, Jazzy and D.O.D., which soars 25-16. Jazzy’s warm vocal and the uplifting music would sound great on Top 40 radio if programmers were more receptive to dance music.

Will Swinton, "Flames"

We’ve been waiting for it for most of the year, but New Zealand’s Will Swinton’s debut EP has arrived called December. Among the songs on it are “Flames”, which climbs 22-18. Does anyone else think that the beginning guitar work recalls Eagle-Eye Cherry’s beloved “Save Tonight”?

Angrybaby, "Back To Life" (Mashbit VIP remix)

A new name to watch in 2025 is Bay area dance producer Angrybaby whose riveting “Back To Life” in its Mashbit VIP remix rises 26-20.  He’s playing my city in January, so I might have to check it out.

Miguel, "Always Time"

Leading off the first of three new entries is a return to the chart for Grammy-winning San Jose native Miguel. His new song at #25, “Always Time”, is a deft mix of rock, pop and R&B from his upcoming fifth album called Viscera. This one may pass by your ears on first listen but with every listen you’ll appreciate it more, especially his fine vocal. It’s his sixth chart entry and first since December 2017 – his song “Pineapple Skies” from the War & Leisure album was my #1 song of 2018.

Alexander Stewart, "His Problem Instead"

Next at #26 is Toronto’s sensational Alexander Stewart – and I can add that adjective knowingly, having seen one of my favourite performances of the year by Alexander a few years back. His new song “His Problem Instead” deserves to be an international hit, and is already in the Top 20 at Top 40 radio in Canada.  It follows his recent album Bleeding Heart, which includes hits like “broken by you”, “blame’s on me” and “i wish you cheated”, which reached #13 on this chart last year. “His Problem Instead” gives him two songs on the chart, as “Wrong Way” (with Two Friends) slides to #11 from its #3 peak.

NYNE, K.C. & The Sunshine Band, "In The Back of My Cadillac" (Eric Kupper remix)

Rounding out the new songs at #30 is a song whose hook you won’t be able to get out of your head. It’s “In The Back of My Cadillac” in its Eric Kupper remix by Houston newcomer NYNE along with the group for which he is musical director, K.C. & The Sunshine Band. The song is also co-written and co-produced by K.C. himself, and like its predecessor “I Get To Love You” (which just peaked at #12), “Cadillac” comes in a bevy of remixes to enjoy.

BILLCS New Music Report – December 11/24 with new songs by PAWSA & The Adventures of Stevie V, Sky Ferreira, Henri PFR, Shuhandz & BRKT, Fly By Midnight, JNR & Natalie Gray, Colin Manson, and LiMaVii

I’ve adjusted the format of my blog posts this week to help them be readable in more bite size chunks.  I’ve broken the reviews down for each song with the following sections:  About the artist(s), Strong points, and Other comments.  If you don’t care for it, do let me know. It honestly makes it easier for me to write as well as for you to read.

If you have any suggestions for changes to this blog for the new year, don’t hesitate to hit me up on one of my socials at the following Linktree link www.linktr.ee/billcs777, or email me directly bill@billcsmusic.blog.

In the Report, you can also check out my pick of the week, along with a record of the week from the host of online radio’s “Top 40 Timeline”, “Big Daddy” Russ Horton, plus “Modern Hype” online radio host DJ Hunter’s “Bop of the Week”.  “The Musicman” James Rogers’ Classic Five leaps forward to the 80’s and 90’s this week. And you’ll find out what the BILLCS Top 30 looked like 5-10-15-20-25 years ago!

PAWSA, The Adventures of Stevie V, "Dirty Cash (Money Talks)"

PAWSA, THE ADVENTURES OF STEVIE V, “Dirty Cash (Money Talks)”

About the artists:  PAWSA is a British dance producer who recently reworked Dennis Edwards’ classic “Don’t Look Any Further” into the club hit “Too Cool To Be Careless”. The Adventures of Stevie V is the artist name for British producer Stevie Vincent, whose original version of “Dirty Cash” went to #2 in the UK and #25 in the US, and was a worldwide dance smash in 1990.

Strong points:  The two artists update the song with a new vocal and an aggressive, faster-paced, slamming rhythm that totally works. The original (as well as Stevie’s other club smash “Jealousy”) will always have a special place for me but it’s nice to see a rework take the best elements of the song and make it stand fresh on its own and apart from the original.

Other comments: Highly recommended! Club and festival DJ’s and dance music radio stations everywhere should add what is bound to be a real audience-pleaser.  Bust a few moves while you’re doing it too!

Sky Ferreira, "Leash"

SKY FERREIRA, “Leash”

About the artist: Sky Ferreira is a singer, actress and model who was signed to Capitol Records for over a decade, yet they only managed to release one album and a handful of sporadic singles before releasing her, an example of the music business record deal at its worst. I saw her in a captivating performance to an adoring small audience in New York City back in 2011.

Strong points: While Sky usually sounds vulnerable in her music, “Leash” was written with a character in mind who is self-destructive. So there is a power and grittiness that I haven’t heard before in her voice, alongside some cutting lyrics, such as “I tore apart this veil of shame / I fought so hard just to be erased”.  The character in the song has fallen in love with her “master” while she sings “As I live and breathe, I’m dead to you”. While you end up feeling regret and remorse for the character at the start, by the end of the song it changes to empowerment.

Other comments: “Leash” is her first single, an indie release, in two years because of her previous contract. It’s from the film “Babygirl” starring Nicole Kidman. It’s a pleasure to have her back and unencumbered, and college and alternative radio stations should dive into “Leash”.

Henri PFR, "Up In The Sky"

HENRI PFR, “Up In The Sky”

About the artist: Belgian dance producer Henri PFR (aka Henri Peiffer) surfaced back around the same time as Martin Garrix, and both are around the same age. Henri has recorded numerous dance releases that have done well, mainly in Europe and usually for major labels, working with a variety of artists like Alesso, Robin Schulz, Blasterjaxx, Karen Harding, and KSHMR.

Strong points: “Up In The Sky” has a lively and wondrous melody with an exuberant, cheerful uncredited young male vocalist (think Troye Sivan meets Justin Bieber). Henri’s also a classically trained musician so the production and arrangement are precise and tight.  The song is a real pick-me-up if you need a lift!

Other comments:  There’s loads of Top 40 and dance radio potential for “Up In The Sky”, which easily stands apart from what’s on the radio these days.  It’s mood-changing ear candy.

Shuhandz, BRKT, "Changes"

SHUHANDZ, BRKT, “Changes”

About the artists:  Shuhandz is a versatile L.A.-based dance producer whose music has been featured in these blog pages, but not for a few years. BRKT is the artist identity for Phoenix-based dance producer Michael Elliott, who is a new name to me.

Strong points: Although it features some vocals in a verse or two mid-song, they are for sonic effect, and that’s cool. “Changes” is largely a techno and trance-infused instrumental. It has lusciously rich, deep qualities in both melody, atmosphere and synth work that make it memorable. And just when you think the song might be reaching the end, the producers create a potent drop that sends clubgoers immediately to the dance floor and extends this journey.

Other comments: “Changes” has huge sync possibilities for just about any visual medium, including festivals and sports arenas.

Fly By Midnight, "Casablanca"

FLY BY MIDNIGHT, “Casablanca”

About the artist: Indie pop duo from Staten Island, New York consisting of Justin Bryte and Slavo (Justin Slaven), who recently peaked at #3 on the BILLCS Top 30 with the insanely catchy single “SuperFine”.

Strong points: “Casablanca” is written from the perspective of someone giddy in love but sadly not geographically close to the object of his affection. So turn our thoughts to the classic movie to think about how we should feel and what we should do (or try to make like Bogie in the film) when undeniable feelings of love strike. The song has a suitably winning melody, great vocals, and will make you smile.

Other comments:  Although it’s not necessary, “Casablanca” will even resonate with you more if you’ve seen the film. The song is part of a two single set with “Love Land”.

JNR, Natalie Gray, "Player Two"

JNR, NATALIE GRAY, “Player Two”

About the artists:  JNR is a dance producer and presenter from Newcastle, England. His work has been getting attention through remixes he’s made recently reviving some of Hazell Dean’s extensive catalogue. Natalie Gray is a new name on the music scene and hails from London.

Strong points:  “Player Two” is a rollicking dance track whose lyrics today might align gaming with betrayal in a relationship. It’s brisk and well-produced by JNR, and Natalie has a vivacious and highly recognizable vocal style which lends a lot of power to the song.

Other comments: “Player Two” is actually a cover of sorts, borrowing verses from seminal disco group First Choice’s 1974 release “The Player”, and making a new song around them. It’s a fun track and club DJ’s should make the most of it.

Colin Manson, "These Words"

COLIN MANSON, “These Words”

About the artist: Colin Manson is an indie pop/folk singer and guitarist from west Scotland who meshes classic folk sounds with contemporary treatises on life. “These Words” follows up his single “Sea Son”, which I reviewed a while back.

Strong points: “These Words” is rich and warm, a quiet sort of protest song, with Colin’s vocal a cross between Nick Drake and Damien Rice. The music is a haunting mix of guitar, cello, piano, Irish whistle, and percussion set to provocative lyrics that urge everyone to be mindful of their words and actions and try to make the world better.

Other comments: Colin’s got a unique, ear-friendly style, and the production by Chris Bond adds a fine layer of polish.

LiMaVii, "The Sound of X-Mas"

LiMaVii, “The Sound of X-Mas”

About the artist: “The Sound of X-Mas” is the second single release by Poland’s LiMaVii (aka Lidia Magdalena Pozanska). She is also noted as a dancer, model and a sound healer. As a healer, her voice is used in an innovative method, to align listeners with harmony and balance in therapeutic settings.

Strong points: There’s no denying it – this release is brimming full of Christmas spirit! If you’re looking for a fresh holiday song to add into your seasonal mix, then “The Sound of X-Mas” will lend some traditional sounds along with some joyous lyrics. And yes, LiMaVii’s cordial vocal is very easy on the ears.

Other comments: Create new memories and share old ones while you listen. LiMaVii wrote the song to help rekindle the magic of Christmas, and it works beautifully.

BILL’S NEW MUSIC PICK OF THE WEEK

My New Music Pick of the Week  is a 5-7 minute radio segment that airs on several online radio stations around the world, and now debuts each Wednesday at 10pm EST on The Big 20 on Halton Hills Radio Online. Here are my picks for this week and last week.

James Bay, "Easy Distraction"

BILLCS New Music Report – December 4/24 with new songs by Fie Eike, The James Clark Institute, Ben Ellis, IZZA, Tawny Ellis, Kaitlyn Olson, Four Nights, and The Past with Robbie Rosen

While everyone’s caught up in big magazine’s early year end lists, Christmas music, and Spotify Wrapped, the Report continues to roll merrily along through December to showcase recent and usually indie releases that could get lost in all of the distractions.

“The Musicman” James Rogers’ Classic Five selections this week form a grab bag of 70’s and 80’s tunes. And you’ll also find out what songs were #1 on the BILLCS Top 30 as we approach the end of each of the last 26 years.

Fie Eike, "The Water"

FIE EIKE, “The Water”

Copenhagen alternative electronic artist Fie Eike returns with her debut album called Water, which has been four years in the making. As I’ve introduced you to some of the songs that now form part of Water from reviews earlier in the year (“The Nile”, “Sad”, “Fluid”), you will know Fie Eike’s music to have a challenging exterior, with sometimes provocative topics, such as water and nature and their interconnectedness as well as with people. But when it boils down to the inside, you’ll find that her songs are fresh and enthralling and actually go down quite easy.  “The Water” might be her best song to date, with an on-point, versatile vocal, against a mysterious piano-forward arrangement that keeps you hanging for what’s next within the song. Fie Eike has written and produced all of her songs and has now seen her vision through to completion. Fans of Björk, Kate Bush, Enya, Cocteau Twins, and Tori Amos will have a field day with “The Water” and should check out the entire album, which contains both vocal-only tracks and instrumentals.

The James Clark Institute, "Orange Christmas"

THE JAMES CLARK INSTITUTE, “Orange Christmas”

I don’t write about Christmas music much, but one song you must check out this year simply for its uniqueness is “Orange Christmas” by Toronto’s The James Clark Institute. It’s a fun, jaunty track with excellent lyrics, a singalong chorus, and a compelling but thoughtful vocal by James. But what sets apart “Orange Christmas” from other holiday music is that its overall sound is as if The Clash got together with Elvis Costello and made a Christmas song. So yeah there’s huge retro appeal here but the song is intended to leave you with a smile on its face and instill the timeless message of missing someone during the holidays, and it succeeds on all counts.

Ben Ellis, "Red Handed"

BEN ELLIS, “Red Handed”

Welsh indie singer/songwriter Ben Ellis steps away from his good-natured, catchy songs like “Ed’s House” and “No One Sleeps In Hollywood” in favour of a guitar-focused rock track in “Red Handed”. As you may gather, the song is about catching a lover “in the act” of something, at the point in a relationship which was about to end anyway. Many of us have lived through these “gotcha” moments which can be deeply satisfying for a few minutes.  The song starts off with a guitar hook strongly reminiscent of Blur. Ben’s vocal as usual is easy on the ears, with maybe some Damon Albarn influence there too, but I appreciate how the production and arrangement are now showing off another side of a talented young guy, which bodes well for future releases.

IZZA, "Tan and a Heartbreak"

IZZA, “Tan and a Heartbreak”

A while back, I introduced you to L.A. based singer/songwriter IZZA with her track “Sweat”, a sexy pop/dance single that recalls the heyday of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. She follows it up with “Tan and a Heartbreak”, which provides a familiar setting of a summer romance that sadly is only set up to end. IZZA shows conviction and vulnerability in her vocal which is set rather unexpectedly against a solid drum n’ bass backdrop. While its appeal is not as immediate as with “Sweat”, “Tan and a Heartbreak” shows that there is much more to IZZA that meets the ear on first listen, and she is clearly not about to be identified as a specific kind of artist in the pop/dance genre, leaving all channels open for what’s to come next. You can find both songs on her seven song EP Because I’m Blonde.

Tawny Ellis, "Elephant"

TAWNY ELLIS, “Elephant”

In the midst of a burgeoning group of folk artists mainly from North America and the UK is L.A.’s Tawny Ellis, a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who fits a lot of powerful imagery alongside a sweet melody in her single “Elephant”. While the song wastes no time in unveiling that its topic is the “elephant in the room” of which we are all too familiar, the parallels of the power of truth and ultimately love are showcased through rushing water, rolling thunder, and shaking walls. While such imagery would be big, bold and upfront in say an electronic dance music track, here they are beautifully restrained to blend with a gentler melody. While Tawny is likely heavily influenced by the style of Joni Mitchell, I can also hear others like Sheryl Crow and Christine McVie in the mix. The record benefits from Tawny’s use of the dulcimer as well as crisp production (she also plays lap steel guitar and omnichord). A new “Elephant” is brought to life through different means and I’m sure we’ll be hearing much more from Tawny Ellis.

Kaitlyn Olson, "Everytime"

KAITLYN OLSON, “Everytime”

“Everytime” is a deliberately-paced, absorbing and soulful pop track, written and sung by L.A.-based talent Kaitlyn Olson. Kaitlyn flips the too cool for thou images that have been created in the media for the likes of Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish, and expresses her sensuality and vulnerability openly for her potential partner in “Everytime”. She’s clearly a strong force on her own, having sung backup for Rod Stewart, worked with members of The Killers, and had a #2 hit in South Korea with a song she wrote for Girls Generation’s Yuri. Kaitlyn’s fine voice doesn’t remind me of anyone in particular, which is not a bad thing.  “Everytime” says to me that Kaitlyn wants to be authentic with her music with her fans, and that’s something we all can’t get enough of in today’s otherwise highly impersonal music business.

Four Nights, "i just hope you feel it too"

FOUR NIGHTS, “i just hope you feel it too”

Ireland’s Four Nights (aka Tommy Buckley) returns following his summer release “Safe” with another song admittedly about whether or not to keep pursuing a crush called “i just hope you feel it too”. I’ll let Tommy’s own words frame the song for you:

The song paints a scene of a party, where a fire is lit – literally – between me and a person who I’m mad about. But as the night progresses, and after a few too many drinks, she cozies up with someone else. The lyrics reflect the raw, rash emotions of the moment: drunken thoughts, dramatic conclusions, and the inevitable regret afterwards.

The vocal in the chorus of the song is enhanced by synths, which is a bit different from what we’ve heard on a Four Nights song, and the wistful melody would cast it in the growing ‘dream pop’ sub-genre. Tommy’s sincere vocal is convincing though, and while as he says that the scenario ultimately ends in regret, you end up wanting to root for him to get the girl. And maybe that’s for another song, but in the meantime Four Nights is clearly ready to move his sounds beyond indie bedroom pop.

The Past, Robbie Rosen, "Way To Go"

THE PAST, ROBBIE ROSEN, “Way To Go”

“Way To Go” epitomizes the classic example of being attracted to someone who then takes advantage of the situation, and before you know it’s too late and you’re in too deep with your emotions. It’s brought to you by producer The Past – which appears to be another moniker for the well-respected veteran Dr. Wig – and former American Idol contestant, the prolific and awesome multi-talented Robbie Rosen. “Way To Go” is more of a straight up danceable pop track, moving away from some of the bangers that Robbie has released this year, but it’s a great showcase for his voice. There’s also a false ending that adds a little something to the mix.

BILLCS Top 30 #706 – December 2/24

I knew it would happen after I returned from travelling last week, but suddenly this week’s BILLCS Top 30 is the second last chart of the year that will count towards my year end list. You’re probably noticing the arrival of several “Best Of” lists this week. That’s because Billboard’s chart year operates from November to October, and for magazines and other websites, it seems to operate December to November. The industry is all about the Christmas and holiday season now – great for spreading joy about the holidays, not great at all for new music as labels and other affiliates pretty much “shut down” for the holidays unless there is a key release to which they are committed. I’ll still have a last chart of the year on December 30 but my focus that week will be on preparing my year end list and accompanying radio show.

Sam Feldt, Rosa Linn, "Heart Like Mine"

“Heart Like Mine” follows my song of summer, “Mi Amor”, with three appearances at the top for Dutch producer Sam Feldt, this time with Armenian vocalist and Eurovision ’22 contender Rosa Linn (for “Snap”).  You can check out a familiar-sounding recent Armada collaboration between Sam, Steve Aoki, XANDRA, Nile Rodgers, and Zak Abel below too, based on an original Nile composition!

Steve Aoki, Sam Feldt, XANDRA, Nile Rodgers, Zak Abel, "I'm Going Out"

TELYKast, Sam Gray, "Surrender Your Love"

Continue to sail up the chart and make things difficult for “Heart Like Mine” to grab another appearance at #1 is “Surrender Your Love” by TELYKast and Sam Gray, which soars 8-2.

Two Friends, Alexander Stewart, "Wrong Way"

After seeing Alexander Stewart in concert last Friday, I can now see why so many people want to work with him!  Long time faves Two Friends got him at the right time for “Wrong Way”, which moves up 4-3.  Alexander performed an acoustic version on Friday that the audience loved!

Todd Terry, Shannon, "It's Over Love" (Janika Tenn remix)

Todd Terry gets his second Top 5 entry of the year with the Janika Tenn remix revival of 1998’s “It’s Over Love” (with Shannon), which rises 7-5.  “What You Do” (reworking an old Gene Chandler release) reached #3 at the top of the year.

Mavis Staples, "Worthy"

There’s always room in the chart for a classy song by an influential talent like Mavis Staples, even at 85 years old!  “Worthy” jumps 9-7.

All of the Top 10 songs are on the rise, except for #1, and there are three new arrivals to the top third of the chart.

Swedish House Mafia, Alicia Keys, "Finally"

Climbing 13-8 is the magnificent collaboration between Swedish House Mafia and Alicia Keys called “Finally”.  Is that simple chorus of “Watchin’, wondering about you” stuck in YOUR head yet?

NOTD, Corbyn Besson, "Panic"

Two members of Why Don’t We are in the Top 10 at the same time.  Corbyn Besson joins Sweden’s NOTD for “Panic” (10-6, above), while Zach Herron’s singalong bop “caroline” busts out of the middle of the chart, up 16-9 (below)!

The Knocks, YELLE, "All The Time/Tout le temps"

The Knocks make it three Top 10 entries in a row this year, this time with French duo YELLE, for “All The Time/Tout le temps”, moving up 11-10.  “One On One” (with Sofi Tukker) got to #6 earlier this year, while “Lover” (with Dolores Forever) recently reached #5.

Duran Duran, "Evil Woman"

For those who don’t yet know, “Evil Woman” by Duran Duran was added to their recent album Danse Macabre in its deluxe edition. This cover of ELO’s 1976 hit climbs 17-14.

Dan Talevski, "mine"

Sometimes a change in style can work wonders, and for me anyway, “mine” by Dan Talevski may be one of my most favourite releases yet by my fellow Canadian. It’s the Fastest Riser and soars 28-16.

GT_Ofice, "Someone Else"

While a bunch of songs get stuck with smaller moves than usual in the lower half of the chart, all of the last chart’s debuts, including “mine”, are well on their way up the chart. Next, GT_Ofice’s “Someone Else” has got both a great story and a wonderful arrangement, and it rises 27-21.

Sonny Fodera, Jazzy, D.O.D., "Somedays"

The highest of four debuts belongs to Australia-born but UK-based dance producer Sonny Fodera, teaming up with Irish vocalist Jazzy and British producer D.O.D. for “Somedays” at #25. It’s already reached #5 in the UK and become a North American Top 10 dance radio hit.  “Somedays” is a warm, fast-paced house track, and it’s Sonny’s second chart entry, following 2021’s “Angel” (#4, with Clementine Douglas).

Angrybaby, "Back To Life" (Mashbit VIP remix)

Next at #26 is the powerful house banger by San Francisco’s Angrybaby called “Back To Life”, which is best heard in the Mashbit VIP remix. Angrybaby is a producer whose star is rising quickly, and “Back To Life” is very much in the same vein as the best tracks by John Summit and Kaskade.

James Bay, "Easy Distraction"

At #27 is “Easy Distraction” by UK singer and guitarist extraordinaire James Bay, from his recently released album Changes All The Time. It’s James’ 7th appearance on the chart.  And yes, I’ll be going to see his show again next May as part of his North American “Up All Night” tour.

Eurielle, "Terrified"

Returning to the chart after an 11 year absence is British indie alternative pop singer Eurielle with “Terrified” at #29. It’s a cool and fun alternative rock track, a bit different from her usual softer, very visual gothic-sounding pop, so check out the video by clicking the photo above. I’ll pitch this one to Kate Bush fans, but listen for Eurielle’s gorgeous soprano hitting a bevy of high notes which help make “Terrified” so memorable.  Eurielle’s “Gold” reached #5 in 2013.

BILLCS New Music Report – November 27/24 with new songs by @Angrybabymusic in a @Mashbit VIP remix, @Sabai_music x @Botcashofficial x @iamCaseyCook, @FrancescoYates, @djWillClarke & @KarenHarding, NYNE & @KCandSunshineB, Ruskin Rowe (@MattBoylanSmith and @AmekaJane), and @MaxEhrich

In some ways I still feel like I’m in vacation mode after a thoroughly enjoyable Caribbean cruise last week. This week’s music selections offer a variety of electronic, dance, and pop of the soulful and folk varieties.

“The Musicman” James Rogers’ Classic Five selections from the early-to-mid 70’s. In case you missed them I’ll also post the current #1 on the BILLCS Top 30 plus last week’s Fastest Riser on the chart. I’ve also got my picks of the week from both this week and last week, as has been played on “The Big 20” and “Modern Hype” online radio shows.

Angrybaby, "Back To Life" (Mashbit VIP remix)

ANGRYBABY, “Back To Life” (Mashbit VIP remix)

If you don’t already know the music of dance producer Angrybaby, he is definitely one to watch thanks to “Back To Life”, which instantly spells BANGER and SMASH in the same ways that huge ones by John Summit, Joel Corry and Odesza have floored dance music fans over the past few years. The female vocalist is uncredited and I don’t recognize the voice, but her power and expressive performance are a key force in why “Back To Life” is so successful. Angrybaby (aka Sam Agate) is an Asian-American producer from the San Francisco area, and “Back To Life” is my introduction to him, having only been releasing music since 2020. He’s already an obvious master of his craft and displays the same kind of synth and production wizardry of the big names in the genre.  Texas-based dance producer Mashbit provides a VIP remix that somehow lifts the track even higher, making “Back To Life” a MUST for dance music fans with potential for national dance music play in its original mix. But for “Back To Life” in this Mashbit VIP remix, its happy place will be blasting out of huge speakers at festivals.

SABAI, BOTCASH, Casey Cook, "Never Fall"

SABAI, BOTCASH, CASEY COOK, “Never Fall”

It’s that time of year in the western hemisphere when summer weather is gone and inevitably a perfect time to release a ballad. And this year there are two releases that came out recently that I’m just loving –  “without u” by Gareth Emery and Annabel under the LSR City moniker, and “Never Fall”. This one is brought to you by Canadian-Thai producer SABAI, Thai producer BOTCASH, and L.A.-based go-to dance music singer/songwriter Casey Cook. The highlights in “Never Fall” are the heartwarming piano breaks and Casey’s smooth vocal, definitely one of my favourites by her after hearing her on several releases over the past few years by the likes of Trivecta, Blanke and yetep. “Never Fall” isn’t her first collaboration with SABAI; I’m not familiar with their other songs together but I would gather the fluid melody of “Never Fall” is the result of some great chemistry.  BOTCASH is probably better known in Asia and this is my first time hearing his participation on a release. Overall, “Never Fall” is the kind of electronic ballad that you might hear at a stadium and then become a puddle. I’m sure the same effect will be felt by fans of SABAI at his shows.

Francesco Yates, "Acapella"

FRANCESCO YATES, “Acapella”

Following up his fun, full throttle rock EP’s, 2023’s Little Rockstar and 2020’s Superbad, Toronto’s Francesco Yates showcases his soulful pipes in “Acapella”. The only accompaniment for Fran on this track indeed is other vocalists, so “Acapella” is a contemporary doo-wop ballad which finds the singer willing to wait for the object of his affection to come around. We heard Fran let loose with with flashy guitar work and screams on tracks like “Jimi” (a BILLCS Top 30 #1) and “Thunderbomb”, so “Acapella” also takes a few steps over to those fans of his music who enjoy his softer side, such as on earlier hits like “Honey I’m Home” or “Call”. It will be interesting to hear where Francesco Yates is heading next and his precision in “Acapella” easily whets your appetite for more.

Will Clarke, Karen Harding, "Worship"

WILL CLARKE, KAREN HARDING, “Worship”

British electronic dance producer Will Clarke has come a long way over the past decade to be signed in the past few years with Armada Records and to receive a Grammy nomination for his work on Deadmau5 and Kaskade’s Kx5’s self-titled album. From his recent debut album Midnight Mass comes “Worship”, a trance-flavoured collaboration with British house music queen and frequent blog visitor Karen Harding. For a song called “Worship”, it has a rather sinister-sounding backdrop, and Karen once again shows her versatility on point with her inviting and alluring vocal. Its hypnotic rhythm and polished synth work give additional reasons for electronic music fans to enjoy and embrace “Worship”.

NYNE, K.C. & The Sunshine Band, "In The Back of My Cadillac" (Eric Kupper remix)

NYNE, K.C. & THE SUNSHINE BAND, “In The Back Of My Cadillac” (Eric Kupper remix)

Dance music veteran Harry Wayne Casey is someone who knows the power of lightning striking not once but several times with K.C. & The Sunshine Band’s bevy of hits from 1974 through to 1980. His band’s Houston-based musical director NYNE – also a nephew of the legendary Dionne Warwick through marriage – steps out from behind the scenes with his debut single “In The Back of My Cadillac”. And like the surprise K.C. comeback “I Get To Love You” (currently sitting at #12 on the BILLCS Top 30), “Cadillac” benefits from an insanely catchy chorus and a solid vocal. On top of that, like “I Get To Love You”, the song comes in every kind of remix you could ask for, but Eric Kupper’s tidy mix surfaces above the rest, though the E39 Coupe Deville remix is crisp and enjoyable too.

Ruskin Rowe, "You and I"

RUSKIN ROWE, “You and I” and “Take Me Home”

Ruskin Rowe are a new duo from the Northern Rivers, New South Wales, Australia, whose music straddles pop, rock, folk and country, and have released two singles in advance of a full-length album. Ruskin Rowe consists of Matt Boylan-Smith – who I wrote about last year with his lovely ode “The Only Eyes I’ve Ever Known” – and Ameka Jane. While the pair came together to write a song for a network TV show, their chemistry proved prolific, with “You and I” (above) and “Take Me Home” (below) offering an introduction to their diverse sounds. “You and I” is a country-flavoured ballad guaranteed to make you all cozy and want to cuddle up with your special someone, while “Take Me Home” is my favourite of the two, a buoyant, rock-flavoured track with an infectious acoustic guitar hook that will also appeal to fans of music from Ireland or Newfoundland (Canada), and featuring great vocals by the pair whose differences offset each other stylistically while blending together seamlessly. It’s also the theme to the TV show “Growing Home with Jamie Durie” airing on channel 7 in Australia. There will be much more to come from Ruskin Rowe in 2025.

Ruskin Rowe, "Take Me Home"Max Ehrich, "Can't Forget Her Now"

MAX EHRICH, “Can’t Forget Her Now”

When I wrote about the first new music in a while from singer/actor Max Ehrich, he was riding a Justin Bieber-tinged hip hop pop tip last year with his single “Backroads”. “Can’t Forget Her Now” finds the former “Young & The Restless” star in a soulful, jazzy performance. The first part of the song unveils the story with Max singing against a bare guitar backdrop, and then emotions intensify with a shift to some hard rock guitars and vocal effects which help make the song more memorable before Max finishes it off in a subtle whisper. “Can’t Forget Her Now” comes together nicely as an unexpectedly blues-flavoured alt.pop ballad.
