BILLCS Top 30 #711 – February 10/25

Suddenly there’s a line-up of new songs waiting to enter the BILLCS Top 30 over the next month.  Fortunately, some older songs made room for five debuts in today’s edition, which will help.

I’ll have two more blog posts before I head off to Australia on Monday February 17.  The next BILLCS New Music Report will publish on Thursday February 13, and I’ll also post another episode of The Big 20 for everyone’s listening pleasure.  The next BILLCS Top 30 will be coming to you from Melbourne, not sure if it will be on February 23 or 24 for most of you, it depends on when I publish it.  The BILLCS New Music Report will not publish while I’m away, returning Wednesday March 12.

Check out information about my ONLINE RADIO SHOWS after the chart commentary below as they are now directly tied in with this blog.  As most of you know, I host 3 online radio shows – The Big 20 and two iterations of Your Weekend New Music Mix – and produce 2 online radio segments – my new music and retro picks of the week – that are all pre-recorded. The Big 20 and the picks of the week are happily being syndicated and you can find the current schedule for all at the bottom of the home page of this blog.

My new music and retro picks of the week will air during the week of February 17 and then will resume the week of March 10.

NOTE: I will be gradually phasing out the You Tube links for the songs on the chart for accessibility purposes. With this week’s new entries, the links in the photos are now Spotify links.

Sonny Fodera, Jazzy, D.O.D., "Somedays"

UK-based, Australia-born dance producer Sonny Fodera gets his first BILLCS Top 30 #1 with a song that continues to endure and be discovered.  It’s “Somedays”, the brisk and heartfelt house track featuring vocals by Irish singer Jazzy and contributions by UK producer D.O.D.  “Somedays” also continues to linger on the UK singles chart, where it reached #5 last year.  It’s a shame such a gorgeous track won’t receive radio airplay in North America beyond dance music stations.

Angrybaby, "Back To Life" (Mashbit VIP remix)

L.A.-based dance producer Angrybaby climbs 4-2 with “Back To Life” in its VIP remix by Texas producer Mashbit. It’s a mesmerizing dance track that fans of John Summit will enjoy.  It contends with “Somedays” for #1 in two weeks.

Alexander Stewart, "His Problem Instead"

Toronto’s Alexander Stewart finds his way to #3 again, this time with “His Problem Instead” (6-3).  He reached #3 last year with his collaboration with Two Friends, “Wrong Way”.  Does “His Problem Instead” have a shot at #1 in two weeks?

James Bay, "Easy Distraction"

James Bay climbs into the Top 5 with “Easy Distraction” rising 7-4.  James last reached #4 with 2023’s album track “Brilliant Still”.

Crash Adams, "Optimist"

“Optimist” by Crash Adams is the first of three songs on the chart to arrive in the Top 10, climbing 11-7 and patching the peak of last year’s rollicking blast of fun “Hotel Party”.

NYNE, K.C. & The Sunshine Band, "In The Back of My Cadillac" (Eric Kupper remix)

Houston, Texas artist NYNE bests the recent peak of the band for which he is musical director, K.C. & The Sunshine Band.  Co-produced and co-written by K.C. himself (Harry W. Casey), the insanely catchy “In The Back of My Cadillac” climbs 12-8 in its Eric Kupper remix.  Last year’s “I Get To Love You” by K.C. & The Sunshine Band stopped at #12.

PAWSA, The Adventures of Stevie V, "Dirty Cash (Money Talks)"

Rounding out the Top 10 is the #1 dance song in Europe, the redux of “Dirty Cash (Money Talks)” (15-10) by UK producer PAWSA in conjunction with Stevie Vincent aka the original artist The Adventures Of Stevie V himself.  The original “Dirty Cash” was my #62 song of 1990.

"Heart First", Lucas & Steve, Jordan Shaw

Lucas & Steve and Jordan Shaw pass the #12 peak of their collaboration “End Of Time” last year with their latest and highly craveable “Heart First” rising 17-11.

Sam Fender, "People Watching"Sam Fender also scores a personal best on the chart with “People Watching” climbing 19-13.  His 2019 release “Can We Talk” topped out at #14.

Anyma, Ellie Goulding, "Hypnotized"

To no surprise, the Fastest Riser on the chart is a record that is defining how dance music sounds in 2025. It’s “Hypnotized” by Anyma and Ellie Goulding, which soars 26-14.

MGR Mike, Milton V, "The Message"

On the indie tip, do yourself a favour and check out “The Message” (27-19) by Nashville’s MGR Mike and Mexico’s Milton V.  It’s sure to put a smile on your face as the disco beats groove around an uber-inspiring speech by boxer Ricky Turcios.

Lady Gaga, "Abracadabra"

Lady Gaga is back with another banger that ranks right up there for me with “Rain On Me”, “Applause”, “Bad Romance”, and “The Edge of Glory” with “Abracadabra” powering onto the chart as the Highest Debut at #21. It’s from her upcoming seventh solo album, MAYHEM, and is her 16th chart entry.

Luca Hanni, "Love Me Better"

Impressive, but awfully brief at only 2:13, is “Love Me Better” by Switzerland’s Luca Hänni, which quickly moves up 28-22.

John Summit, CLOVES, "Focus"

New at #24 is “Focus” by Chicago superstar dance producer John Summit and vocalist CLOVES, which is certain to be a festival favourite this year.  It’s John’s second entry on the chart following last year’s “Shiver” (with Hayla), which was my #1 song of the year.

Kygo, One Republic, "Chasing Paradise"

Next at #27 is a song I first heard in concert on January 23.  It’s “Chasing Paradise”, a slice of summery dance/pop we all need during the winter months in the northern hemisphere by Kygo and One Republic.  It’s easily one of Ryan Tedder’s best vocals in recent years. It’s Kygo’s fourth chart entry, and One Republic’s fifth but first since 2012. To be fair, I would have charted 2014’s “Counting Stars”, but it hadn’t grown on me till long after it had peaked.

Liam Wall, "Walking Red Flag"

At #28 is Nashville-based newcomer Liam Wall with an affecting, authentic song that’s chock full of hooks, “Walking Red Flag”.

Milkwish, Mike Konstanty, "Show Me The Way"

Finishing up the debuts at #29 is “Show Me The Way”, a laid back piano-house track by Polish producers Milkwish and Mike Konstanty. It’s Milkwish’s third chart entry but first since 2022.

BILLCS New Music Report – February 6/25 with new releases by Michael Medrano, Kacey Fifield, The Knocks & Dragonette, Francesco Yates, Ronski Speed x Harshil Kamdar x Greg Oakland x Tara Louise, Church Of Trees, Braaheim x Angelo Basham x Felix Averian, and Earth Cadet

It often takes until the Grammy Awards for the start of big new releases in a new year. And so within a week we had a new album by The Weeknd and a new single from Lady Gaga, which is a throwback to her Born This Way era and just what we might have needed. I haven’t seen the Grammy Awards get so many rave reviews as I have this year. My perspective is always tainted by the politics in the way, and for the most part they did a decent job of hiding that in plain sight, so to speak.

In the Report, you can also check out my pick of the week, along with a record of the week from the host of online radio’s “Top 40 Timeline”, “Big Daddy” Russ Horton, plus “Modern Hype” online radio host DJ Hunter’s “Bop of the Week”.  “The Musicman” James Rogers, while vacationing in Australia, has sent in his Classic Five choices, all from 1976! And you’ll also find out what the BILLCS Top 30 looked like this week 20 years ago – 2005!

Note:  Next week’s report will publish on Thursday, February 13 rather than on Wednesday.

Reminder:  Click on the photos below to listen to the songs. If the song has a video, a You Tube link is now provided underneath the artist and song title.

Michael Medrano, "Martini (Shots)"

MICHAEL MEDRANO, “Martini (Shots)”

About the artist: L.A. based pop/dance artist Michael Medrano has released his latest album called The Penthouse, which includes the single “Hollywood”, the Madonna cover I wrote about recently.

About the record:  “Martini (Shots)” is the album opener and with its propulsive, seductive techno-house rhythm draws you into Michael’s naughty NSFW world of The Penthouse. And Michael has certainly found his niche in the dance music world, making fun music like this without losing his integrity.  Going back to disco days, dance music has always had a provocative, subversive side that revolves around innuendo, which gets stretched a bit further in the album. It’s not for everyone, but it’s fascinating for those willing to explore with Michael.

Other comments: The Penthouse also includes previously released singles “Tom Hardy”, “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”, “Pornstar”, and “Karma”.

Kacey Fifield, "Hold Ur Peace"

KACEY FIFIELD, “Hold Ur Peace”

About the artist:  Kacey Fifield is the 20 year old vocalist and musician from L.A., currently attending school in NYC. When not focused on her studies, she is attracting her loyal social media following to her shows.

About the record:  “Hold Ur Peace” features an explosion of energy which will attract fans of The Go Go’s as equally as fans of The Beaches. Like “Dream Girl” and “Never Reply”, it’s a guitar-soaked rocker created in conjunction with producer/writer Mike Pepe, known for his work with The Struts and Cassadee Pope. It’s fresh and vibrant, and shows that Kacey can cross the line between pop/rock and dance/pop with ease whenever she likes.

Other comments: “Hold Ur Peace” has an immediately catchy chorus, and a dynamic vocal by Kacey, easily one of my three favourites by her to date.  Don’t miss this one!

The Knocks, Dragonette, "Revelation"

THE KNOCKS, DRAGONETTE, “Revelation”

About the artists:  NYC production duo The Knocks have released three albums to date and are club and festival favourites thanks to their positive strides to unite dance music lovers at their events. Dragonette is now solely award-winning singer/songwriter Martina Sorbara, best known for her hit with Martin Solveig “Hello”, and also Dragonette’s previous collaboration with The Knocks, “Slow Song”, which in fact one of both artists’ best known songs.

About the song: I think the “Revelation” being explored here is the universal theme of doing whatever it takes to be happy in our life, which is something that sure includes music and dancing. It’s one of Martina’s best vocals amid The Knocks’ new found fascination with crisp, bright sounds in favour of deep, darker synths. It’s definitely a continuation of what they started last year, particularly with “Lover” and “All The Time/Tout le temps”, which both landed in the Top 10 of the BILLCS Top 30.

Other comments:  The last time I saw a show by The Knocks was in 2018 in NYC, and though they have been consistently performing smaller gigs, they’re overdue for some bigger shows. I’d love to hear in concert what songs I’ve been digging since that time.  The music scene needs more shows like “The Knocks and Friends” again!

Francesco Yates, "Better Half"

FRANCESCO YATES, “Better Half”

About the artist: Francesco Yates is the versatile indie Toronto vocalist and guitarist best known in the last decade for “Better To Be Loved” and his vocal on Robin Schulz’s worldwide smash “Sugar”, which is still played at festivals all over the world.

About the record: It’s been a while since Fran returned to his softer side, which we first heard late last year with “Acapella”. When he’s not smashing it with his wicked guitar work, he can scale things back beautifully to show off his silky, soulful voice. There’s always an audience for gorgeous, polished songs like “Better Half”. Fran’s audience is that much older now too, though “Better Half” can easily continue to woo his younger listeners too.

Other comments: Francesco Yates has had 8 entries on the BILLCS Top 30 including the 2023 #1 “Jimi”. I’d love to see “Better Half” and other upcoming releases draw in the R&B crowd.

Ronski Speed, Harshil Kamdar, Greg Oakland, Tara Louise, "The Good Times"

RONSKI SPEED, HARSHIL KAMDAR, GREG OAKLAND, TARA LOUISE, “The Good Times”

About the artists:  Ronski Speed is a German dance producer who has been making music for more than 25 years. It’s funny how small the world has become with streaming, because I hadn’t heard of him before now. Conversely, Harshil Kamdar is an 18 year old dance producer from New Jersey but originally from India.  Greg Oakland is a NYC-based dance producer who graced the BILLCS Top 30 in 2023 with “Never Temporary” (#5) which also features the stunning voice of vocalist/songwriter Tara Louise.

About the record: “The Good Times” is euphoric, trance-flavoured dance music that reminds me a lot of what was coming out of Europe between 2000 and 2009. It’s a lush, melodic track guaranteed to make you feel great. I’d pitch the song to fans of the genre who enjoy Above & Beyond as much as they would Cascada.

Other comments: The three producers and vocalist all show off their craft and collaboration skills well, and we need more songs “The Good Times” to keep the great vibes going in 2025 as we approach festival season.

Church of Trees, "Mystery Boys"

CHURCH OF TREES, “Mystery Boys”

About the artist:  Church of Trees is an Ottawa alternative rock collective led by vocalist/keyboardist Bernard Frazer, which weaves its repertoire from the last decade in 80’s new wave synthpop and progressive electronic flavours.

About the record: “Mystery Boys” does indeed offer up some mystery in its lyrics – who are these foreboding characters and why should we fear them? It’s a compelling release that portrays elements of a “1984”-ish society, with Bernard trading off vocals with Stella Panacci, and they both sound great amid the slick rhythm section which includes guitar and drums.

Other comments:  “Mystery Boys” comes in advance of Church of Trees’ next album Thief of Joy, scheduled for a late Spring release. The song was mixed by noted producer Mark Plati, who worked with David Bowie in the 90’s and early 2000’s.

Braaheim, Angelo Basham, Felix Averian, "Mountain King (Rave It Up)"

BRAAHEIM, ANGELO BASHAM, FELIX AVERIAN, “Mountain King (Rave It Up)”

About the artists:  Braaheim is a Norwegian dance producer who has acquired a sizeable following over the last four years. Angelo Basham and Felix Averian are German dance producers, with Angelo having had some of his songs previously featured in this blog.

About the record: “Mountain King (Rave It Up)” is a fun techno-bounce that doesn’t let up for its 2:18 length, a bop that could easily energize a club set, and an ID could find its way to festivals.  And yes you’ve heard that melody before, it’s Edvard Grieg’s classical piece “In the Hall of the Mountain King” that serves as the basis for the song, which also features a playful uncredited female vocal.

Other comments: I could also hear “Mountain King (Rave It Up)” in a wacky video game or animated cartoon setting, so there is plenty of sync potential too.

Earth Cadet, "Silhouette"

EARTH CADET, “Silhouette”

About the artist: Earth Cadet is a hard rock/grunge trio led by Sam Edmonds and hails from Bendigo, which is north west of Melbourne in Australia. To date the band has released several singles and an EP called Tales From The End.

About the record: “Silhouette” is probably the hardest core grunge song I’ve heard in a long time. Earth Cadet’s big guitars, fuzzy production, and overall Pearl Jam-meets-Smashing Pumpkins sound take pages right out of the 90’s, and minimal embellishments give “Silhouette” a live-off-the-floor feel. The vocal is more what you might hear in metal releases but works  well in the big picture.

Other comments: “Silhouette” is the opening track on Tales From The End, which includes five other songs. Earth Cadet has also released a few singles recorded live to give you a taste of what you might expect at a show.\

BILLCS New Music Report – January 29/25 with new songs by Gregory Darling &; Julian Lennon, Sam Robbins, Ekonovah & Julia Temos, MashBit & Jake Neumar, Mantra & Jake Neumar, Nico De Andrea & hazel, and Elephants & Stars

In less than three weeks, I’ll be embarking on my first vacation completely outside of North America in many years, when I visit Melbourne, Sydney and Bribie Island (off the coast of Brisbane) in less than three weeks. I’m looking forward to exchanging the cold in Toronto for the summery heat, and hopefully checking out some of the music scene there too.  If you know of any artists who are playing, particularly in Melbourne (Feb 19-24) and Sydney (Feb 25-28), and worth checking out, please drop me a message! I’ll be visiting with The Musicman James Rogers too while he’s on Bribie during my last week in Oz.

If you have any suggestions for this blog, don’t hesitate to hit me up on one of my socials at the following Linktree link www.linktr.ee/billcs777, or email me directly bill@billcsmusic.blog.

In the Report, you can also check out my pick of the week, along with a record of the week from the host of online radio’s “Top 40 Timeline”, “Big Daddy” Russ Horton, plus “Modern Hype” online radio host DJ Hunter’s “Bop of the Week”.  “The Musicman” James Rogers is vacationing in Sydney as I write so I’ve provided this week’s Classic Five selection from the 70’s. If you missed them on Monday, you’ll find out what songs are #1 and the Fastest Riser in the latest edition of the BILLCS Top 30.

Reminder:  Click on the photos below to listen to the songs. If the song has a video, a You Tube link is now provided underneath the artist and song title.

Gregory Darling, Julian Lennon, "A New Dream"

GREGORY DARLING, JULIAN LENNON, “A New Dream”

Video link:  A New Dream

About the artists:  Born in San Diego but now based in Europe, Gregory Darling is a singer/songwriter and musician whose foray into music began as a child. He’s had his own band, provided vocals for movie scores, and worked with some of the best artists in the biz. And that of course includes Julian Lennon, who he has known and worked with for many years. The eldest son of John isn’t often seen or heard from, having released one album, his seventh called Jude, in the last 14 years, and revisited his dad’s “Imagine” in support of Ukraine.

About the record: My but Gregory and Julian do sound fab together! Julian kicks off the song modestly with his ageless, familiar voice, and sets the stage for Gregory’s robust tenor. Life is full of stages and one never knows when there is an opportunity to start something fresh. If “A New Dream” is a new beginning for Gregory and Julian as collaborators, then count me in. It’s a classically-written pop song with a soulful backdrop that’s very refreshing.

Other comments: “A New Dream” is a reimagined version of a song from Gregory’s debut 2006 album Shell. And I happen to remember Gregory from his early 90’s hard rock group, Darling Cruel, during a brief flirtation I had with hair metal at the time. He has a multi-octave, powerful voice. I have a copy of Darling Cruel’s single “Love Child” on a compilation album, and I really thought they were going to break through,  but label politics prevented a second album from being released.  Gregory has toured with Bryan Adams, jammed with Prince, and previously worked with Julian on his 2011 release Everything Changes.

Sam Robbins, "What A Little Love Can Do"

SAM ROBBINS, “What A Little Love Can Do”

Video link: What A Little Love

About the artist:  Sam Robbins is a folk/pop singer from New Hampshire, now based in Nashville, who has released three albums to date, including a Christmas album. His touring has taken him 45,000 miles in the USA in the last few years, and he also provides songwriting therapy to veterans.

About the record: “What A Little Love Can Do” is a gentle, piano and guitar-driven track but a pointed slice of thoughtful storytelling that shows how important love is in our daily lives, only for it to get overshadowed by tragedy and world events. It was written in Nashville after a shooting took place, and solidifies our need to connect with each other in person to sing and laugh and enjoy ourselves, and to take ourselves away from the everyday dirge that today’s media and social media foist upon us.  Fans of James Taylor, Paul Simon, Jackson Browne and The Eagles will enjoy “What A Little Love Can Do”.

Other comments: With all of his travels, Berklee-educated Sam is likely at some point playing a local gig near you. “What A Little Love Can Do” arrives in advance of his fourth album, So Much I Still Don’t See, recorded live in a church in Springfield, MA.

Ekonovah, Julia Temos, "One Night"

EKONOVAH, JULIA TEMOS, “One Night”

About the artists:  Ekonovah (aka Stephen Scotti) is an electronic dance producer from Phoenix who fuses different sub-genres together with flourishes of old disco mixed in. He reached #4 on the BILLCS Top 30 last year with “Find My Flow”.  Julia Temos is an Australian singer/songwriter who has worked with producers such as JYYE.

About the record:  “One Night” slams in all the right places. It’s a piano-led deep house track with a seductive melody. The production on Julia’s vocal gives it a futuristic vibe, making it ideal for sync possibilities in video games.  And it’s got that disco bounce I’ve enjoyed so much in Ekonovah’s other recent releases.

Other comments:  A well-defined progressive sound makes “One Night” stand out in a set.

Mashbit, Jake Neumar, "Echo of You"

MASHBIT, JAKE NEUMAR, “Echo of You”

About the artists:  MashBit (aka Dariush Mashayekhi) is a Texas-based dance producer who recently provided the stellar VIP remix for Angrybaby’s “Back To Life”, currently in the BILLCS Top 30’s at #4.  Jake Neumar is a prolific Nashville-based singer/songwriter who recently provided the vocal on Win & Woo’s “Reload”.

About the record: “Echo of You” is more proof that every record an electronic dance producer releases does not need to be a banger. It’s a sweet pop song with a distinct vocal by Jake that puts you into the long aftermath of a relationship where hints or echoes of that person remain in everyday memory, but as the song resolutely points out for good or bad, “it’s never you”. So to paraphrase Disclosure, she’s gone, vibe on.

Other comments: Despite its many subtleties, “Echo of You” is full of pop or dance radio potential, and could also work well for DJ’s as an evening at the club winds down.

Mantra, Jake Neumar, "Remember"

MANTRA, JAKE NEUMAR, “Remember”

About the artists:  Mantra is a rising new dance producer from Atlanta named Arnav Singh who recently scored a remix for Flo Rida. And Jake Neumar scores two reviews in one Report!

About the record:  “Remember” is a brisk, drum ‘n bass-driven song led by Jake’s captivating and affecting vocal. “Remember” touches on those times when you feel like you’re literally all out of love after “hollow relationships”, and how to move forward. It’s a relatable viewpoint for many people, and dance music is often the genre where you’ll find those perspectives translate the best.

Other comments: The song is included on an album compilation by its label, Lost In Dreams, called Gateway Vol. 7, which also features artists like Z3LLA and Monica Santucci.

Nico De Andrea, hazel, "Compromise"

NICO DE ANDREA, hazel, “Compromise”

About the artists:  Nico De Andrea is a veteran French dance producer who has had great success in Europe and the UK for many years. hazel is a pop/R&B singer/songwriter based in L.A. who has recorded songs in the past five years solo and with other producers such as Dunisco and Boye & Sigvardt.

About the record:  “Compromise” is uber-smooth melodic deep house, a style that producers have been veering away from lately in favour of flirtations with afrobeats, drum ‘n bass and progressive house. A fine melodic deep house song goes a long way. Nico concentrates on building a warm, sophisticated ambiance, with hazel’s alluring voice a perfect foil in a memorable performance.

Other comments:  North American club and festival DJ’s shouldn’t sleep on “Compromise”, a wise choice for Armada to release to keep variety going in the mixes.

Elephants & Stars, "Strangers on a Train"

ELEPHANTS & STARS, ” Strangers on a Train”

Captioned video link:  Strangers

About the artist:  Elephants & Stars is the Toronto area rock quintet I wrote about earlier in the month with their previous single “The Ceiling” leading off their upcoming album Under The Earth and Above Heaven. The band is led by singer/guitarist Manfred Sittman, with production by Toronto mainstay Ian Blurton.

About the record: Jangly guitar work abounds and provides “Strangers on a Train” with a killer hook, with other standouts being its chorus and harmonies. In contrast are the bleaker lyrics, which identify people you might see every day on a train, bus or subway, but never get to know, as we are all sometimes just passers-by, but in the meantime our days just slip away in front of our eyes.

Other comments: With two solid lead off singles, Elephants & Stars definitely provide the goods for mainstream rock fans which should prevail on the new album.

BILLCS Top 30 #1 SONG

Swedish House Mafia, Alicia Keys, "Finally"

Swedish House Mafia and Alicia Keys continue at #1 with “Finally”

BILLCS Top 30 FASTEST RISER

"Heart First", Lucas & Steve, Jordan Shaw

“Heart First” by Lucas & Steve and Jordan Shaw climbs 26-17

BILLCS Top 30 #710 – January 27/25

If you’re like me and want to hear music recorded by humans, then I would suggest avoiding playlists created by the streaming platforms themselves, unless they have a policy against music created by AI. Apparently, AI-created music is becoming prevalent on streaming platforms, and casual listeners are falling for the scams. Hard-working artists should not have to compete against technology for their craft, so be careful out there.

NOTE: I will be gradually phasing out the You Tube links for the songs on the chart for accessibility purposes. With this week’s new entries, the links in the photos are now Spotify links.

Swedish House Mafia, Alicia Keys, "Finally"

Swedish House Mafia and Alicia Keys hold on to #1 on the chart for a second appearance with their brilliant collaboration “Finally”. It’s definitely a hard act to follow by either one of these talents.

Sonny Fodera, Jazzy, D.O.D., "Somedays"

“Somedays” is the warm and inviting deep house track by Sonny Fodera, Jazzy and D.O.D. which now climbs 4-2 and is set to challenge for the top spot in two weeks.

Angrybaby, "Back To Life" (Mashbit VIP remix)

A lot of the audience who attended Angrybaby’s show in Toronto on Saturday were evidently waiting to hear his banger “Back To Life”, judging by the reactions when it was played. “Back To Life” moves up 8-4.

Alexander Stewart, "His Problem Instead"

Leaping 14-6 and now in the Top 10 mix is Alexander Stewart’s exuberant “His Problem Instead”. It’s his first solo entry to reach the Top 10. “Wrong Way”, with Two Friends, got to #3 late last year. And speaking of Two Friends, I’m seeing them in concert on January 31, and I’m full expecting an Alex Stew cameo!!

Hayla, "Only I"

The only other new entry to the Top 10 is “Only I” by Hayla, climbing 12-10.  It’s her fourth Top 10 entry, and she was her dazzling self at the Kygo concert I saw last week, singing “Without You” (which reached #1 on this chart last year).

Crash Adams, "Optimist"

Moving up the chart briskly is Crash Adams’ affecting and uber-positive “Optimist”, which jumps 19-11.  If you want to join in on the guys’ brand of outreach to their fans, then follow their broadcast channel on IG.  One of the best!

Damiano David, "Born With A Broken Heart"

I think sometimes terrestrial radio is at odds with the streaming world. I read a column recently which claims songs like Damiano David’s gorgeous “Born With A Broken Heart” (23-16) aren’t getting a lot of requests at radio. The world doesn’t revolve around radio anymore and right now if programmers want to cater to the casual listeners making ongoing requests for “A Bar Song” or “Good Luck, Babe!”, then go right ahead.

"Heart First", Lucas & Steve, Jordan Shaw

The Fastest Riser on the chart is “Heart First” by Lucas and Steve with Jordan Shaw, which soars 26-17. I just love the hooks, melody and vocal in this one. I’m surprised North American dance radio isn’t all over it following the artists’ #1 last year with “End of Time”.

While there are also plenty of songs moving up in the bottom half of the chart, we’ll see in two weeks which songs break through a bit more as it looks like anyone’s guess, including mine!

Anyma, Ellie Goulding, "Hypnotized"

The Highest Debut is “Hypnotized” by Anyma and Ellie Goulding at #26. Anyma is the American-Italian producer who has been in the news because of his residency at The Sphere in Las Vegas and the stunning show he has put on there, which I assume will be going on tour in a different iteration. It’s his first appearance on the chart, but Ellie Goulding is welcomed back for the fourth time but first since 2013, and she sounds great on “Hypnotized”.

MGR Mike, Milton V, "The Message"

Next at #27 is “The Message” by Nashville producer MGR Mike and Mexican producer Milton V. It’s a standout disco-house track featuring an excerpt of an inspiring speech by Ricky Turcios, the 2021 bantamweight Ultimate Fighter contest winner. While tracks like this could get old really fast, this one keeps your interest because of its enthusiasm and the driven rhythm, which is guaranteed to have you moving in no time.

Luca Hanni, "Love Me Better"

And at #28, it’s the second chart entry by Switzerland’s Luca Hänni, known for his 2019 EuroVision performance of “She Got Me”. That catchy piece of business got to #5 on this chart, so who knows if “Love Me Better” will do the same. Its engaging and timely lyrics about self-love and self-care after a breakup is certainly a big draw.

BILLCS New Music Report – January 22/25 with new songs by Liam Wall, Milkwish & Mike Konstanty, Mergui, Grabbitz, Adam Woods, CMAGIC5, Paul Hetherington & Luv Foundation (UK), and Eye Eye

You can expect a lot of variety in this week’s Report, but somehow it almost always falls back to great pop singers and fine pop songs amid the mix of electronic dance and alternative pop/rock releases that I’ve been choosing to write about lately.

“The Musicman” James Rogers is travelling to Australia as I write so I’ve provided this week’s Classic Five selection from the 80’s. You’ll also find out what songs were #1 at this time of year on the BILLCS Top 30 over the last 27 years.

Reminder:  Click on the photos below to listen to the songs. If the song has a video, a You Tube link is now provided underneath the artist and song title.

Liam Wall, "Walking Red Flag"

LIAM WALL, “Walking Red Flag”

About the artist: Liam Wall is a rising pop singer/songwriter from Southern California who is also based out of Nashville and has released a dozen singles since 2020.

About the record: “Walking Red Flag” is an instant new favourite. It’s a sentimental, self-effacing pop song that wrings your sympathy handkerchief dry. What’s different about Liam’s style is that his lyrics blend a mix of confidence, heartache and self-worth, which is completely relatable to the listeners. At the end, you’d probably want to give him a big hug over a pat on the back.

Other comments: In the next few years, male songwriters like Liam Wall are going to get their due, something that Benson Boone and Alexander Stewart have already started. “Walking Red Flag” is a delight that you will have on repeat. Thanks to DJ Hunter for being my discovery source by playing it on “Modern Hype”.

Milkwish, Mike Konstanty, "Show Me The Way"

MILKWISH, MIKE KONSTANTY, “Show Me The Way”

About the artists: Both hailing from Poland, Milkwish is an electronic dance producer who has found his way into these blog pages and the BILLCS Top 30 a few times through collaborations with Mahalo, while Mike Konstanty is a producer/vocalist/songwriter.

About the record: “Show Me The Way” has about a half-dozen different vibes happening, and they all come together cohesively. Its piano house melody is supported by some afrobeats and progressive house influences, which include using Mike’s vocals more as effects. It’s got a laid back, ear-catching groove with lots going on and will solidly keep your attention.

Other comments: Both artists are well-known in Poland but not the rest of the world, and I can picture discovery through Shazam or sync possibilities. “Show Me The Way” is a versatile track that can be used by club DJ’s early evening or late night as a chill out track, or could percolate mid-evening in a progressive house set. While there is an extended version, it could also benefit from some remixes.

Mergui, "10,000 Faces"

MERGUI, “10,000 Faces”

About the artist: Last month I introduced you to Jonathan Mergui, best known in Israel but now living in Los Angeles.  The Sam Feldt edit of “On My Mind” just charted on the BILLCS Top 30, and Mergui recently dropped an EP called Nobody Really Knows.

About the record: “10,000 Faces” is an uptempo, danceable pop track that will go hand in hand on playlists next to singers like Darin and Conan Gray. Mergui’s got one of those enviable voices with a beautiful tone which could sing just about anything and not only make it work, but charm you in the process.

Other comments: Mergui is a name to keep in mind for your list of 2025 breakouts. I’m thinking that a big campaign is ahead for him.

Grabbitz, "Saint Maniac"

GRABBITZ, “Saint Maniac”

About the artist:  Grabbitz (aka Nicholas Chiari) hails from Buffalo NY and is now based in southern California. Originally breaking through in the EDM world, Grabbitz has found a rare happy medium where he can create edgy alternative rock while continuing to straddle EDM, and working with artists like Illenium, Subtronics, and Valorant.

About the song: “Saint Maniac” is a fun 90’s flavoured rave up that would sit comfortably next to releases by Soundgarden and Live which are now more than 25 years old. Grabbitz’s vocal is fresh and the song’s arrangement is full of musical surprises to keep you listening.

Other comments: Grabbitz has released two well-received albums, so “Saint Maniac” is the start of a new era, and I’ll look forward to hearing what’s next. It’s hard to believe that his breakthrough collaboration with Rezz, “Someone Else” (which reached #5 on the BILLCS Top 30), was almost five years ago.

Adam Woods, "Cold As Ice"

ADAM WOODS, “Cold As Ice”

About the artist: 23 year old Swedish singer/songwriter Adam Woods (real name: Adam Allskog) seemingly came out of nowhere in 2023 to sing on the Melodifestivalen entry “Where You Are”, which finished fourth, and returned to the competition in 2024 with his own “Supernatural”.

About the song: “Cold As Ice” is a melt-worthy pop song about having to break up with someone when you don’t really want to do that. The protagonist wrestles with his decision, weighing all the pros and cons, but ultimately decides being apart is best. It’s a rare song that gives viewpoints on both sides.  Adam’s vocal is a ringer at times for Josh Ramsay of Marianas Trench.

Other comments: Adam is a bit of a phantom online, there’s not too much known about him or if “Cold As Ice” is being entered in Melodifestivalen this year. It’s a corker of a pop song with emotional edges that you’ll want on some of your playlists.

CMAGIC5, "Happy Never After"

CMAGIC5, “Happy Never After”

Video link:  Happy Never After

About the artist: CMAGIC5 (also known as “C”) is a Toronto area pop/rock artist who came to my attention back in 2021 with the sophisticated R&B/pop of “Love Me If You Can”. She re-emerged on my radar when I saw her perform at a free show in Toronto last year for Youth Day with a tougher, rock-flavoured sound on songs like “Game Boy”.

About the song: Although the influences of talent like Avril Lavigne and Olivia Rodrigo are obvious, “Happy Never After” is a pop-bop-as-breakup-song, which recalls Gayle’s “ABCDEFU” and Leah Kate’s “10 Things I Hate About You” a little more closely. Clearly, a pop-spiked edge alternative sound is where CMAGIC5 is headed and “Happy Never After” is catchy and slick and stands out.

Other comments: “Happy Never After” is a lead in to CMAGIC5’s forthcoming third album, so we’ll be hearing much more from her in her rock chick era in 2025.

Paul Hetherington, Luv Foundation (UK), "Everything"

PAUL HETHERINGTON, LUV FOUNDATION (UK), “Everything”

About the artist: Melbourne, Australia dance music artist Paul Hetherington is back with his third recent single, this time with the veteran UK dance production duo Luv Foundation (Julian Napolitano and Mark Schneider) who have been releasing music together under this moniker for the last two years.

About the song: Working with long-time pros like Dave Audé, Stonebridge, 7th Heaven, and Luv Foundation is the supreme icing on the cake for Paul’s releases. “Everything” is another 80’s-flavoured electro pop bop that is a natural progression after “Dirty Mind” and “Thrill of the Chase”, all of which have done well for an indie release especially in the UK as well as with some online personal chart-makers.

Other comments: I’m anxious to see who might be remixing “Everything”.

Eye Eye, "Full Cement Luxury"

EYE EYE, “Full Cement Luxury”

About the artist:  Eye Eye is the Toronto area duo of vocalist Bill Wood and guitarist Andy Ryan. If the name is familiar to Canadian music fans of the 80’s, it’s because Bill and Andy anchored a pop/rock group of the same name which received significant radio play in Canada, released two albums, as well as being nominated for a Juno Award for Most Promising Group. After playing a few live shows together after 35 years, the pair got the bug to create new music.

About the record: “Full Cement Luxury” is Eye Eye’s third single in their revival era. It leaves the synth-flavoured pop/rock of the 80’s behind in favour of bluesy rock storytelling. The song deserves your undivided attention, and like with me, may not resonate with you on one listen. The storyline captures the setting of a seedy motel in the 1950’s, and that kind of bluesy rock can only capture the social underbelly of the time. Bill Wood’s deep, gravelly vocal will remind listeners of Jon Bon Jovi or the older Johnny Cash, while Andy’s fluid guitar work guides the song’s seductive groove.

Other comments: Eye Eye emerges as a transformed heritage act whose interesting songs are worth the deep dive.

BILLCS New Music Report – January 15/25 with new songs by The Waterboys, Luca Hänni, Aysanabee, Cam Blake, Beauz x Pascal Letournon x Polar Bears x Stephen Puth, Ernar x JeLa x Robbie Rosen, The Octopus Division, and Battleflagg

The music business is now back in full force, but I don’t have much to add this week, other than being curious about what will happen for American artists if Tik Tok is banned in the United States on January 19.

“The Musicman” James Rogers’ Classic Five provides a mix of late 70’s Canadiana for your listening pleasure. You’ll also find out what songs were #1 and the Fastest Riser on the latest BILLCS Top 30.

Reminder:  Click on the photos below to listen to the songs. If the song has a video, a You Tube link is now provided underneath the artist and song title.

The Waterboys, "Hopper's On Top (Genius)"

THE WATERBOYS, “Hopper’s On Top (Genius)”

Video link:  Hopper’s On Top

About the artist: The Waterboys is one of my favourite and most fascinating rock groups who I’ve seen several times in concert during the last 40 years, first in December 1984. Led by Scottish musician Mike Scott, The Waterboys has one of the most unique repertoires of any rock band. In more recent years, Mike seems to have found a successful and crowd-pleasing balance of rock and folk on Waterboys recordings.

About the record: “Hopper’s On Top (Genius)” leads off the upcoming concept album Life, Death and Dennis Hopper. It’s not the first song about the late trail-blazing character actor that Mike and band have recorded, so there seems to be an intrinsic fascination enough to make him the focal point of an album. “Hopper’s On Top” is certainly a fine celebration of the actor-as-everyman, who had many highs and lows in his career, led by Mike’s exuberant vocal. The vivid instrumentation is bound to make this an audience favourite in concert.

Other comments: You don’t need to know about Dennis Hopper or even The Waterboys to appreciate the vitality of “Hopper’s On Top”. Mike has called in a cavalry of musicians for the new album which also features appearances by no less than Bruce Springsteen, Fiona Apple, Steve Earle, Kathy Valentine of The Go Go’s, Barny Fletcher, and Sugarfoot. I have high hopes for this one and a concert tour!

Luca Hanni, "Love Me Better"

LUCA HÄNNI, “Love Me Better”

Video link:  Love Me Better

About the artist:  Switzerland’s Luca Hänni is best known for winning Germany’s version of the “Pop Idol” contest while still a teenager, the youngest winner of that contest. He then went on to perform for Switzerland at EuroVision in 2019 with the insanely catchy “She Got Me”, which finished fourth, and also reached #5 on the BILLCS Top 30.

About the record: Like “She Got Me”, “Love Me Better” draws you in quickly, this time with engaging and timely lyrics about self-love after a breakup, with an anthemic hook that will have you singing along. The video also shows off some superlative dance moves by Luca, as well as a satisfying ending.

Other comments: Could “Love Me Better” be a contender for Switzerland at EuroVision this year? It certainly has the appeal as well as a provocative story line. 2025 could be a big year for Luca Hänni if this song is any indication.

Aysanabee, "Edge of the Earth"

AYSANABEE, “Edge of the Earth”

About the artist:  Canada’s Aysanabee has won two Juno Awards, for Songwriter of the Year, and Best Alternative Album of the Year for Here And Now. He’s an Oji-Cree singer/songwriter who is a member of the Sandy Lake First Nation, and grew up near Thunder Bay, Ontario.

About the record:  “Edge of the Earth” is about finding yourself at a moment in time where you realize that everything and everyone that immediately surrounds you is good and okay, after having fallen in and out of love and come out the other side rather unscathed. Aysanabee has a distinct but often world-weary kind of voice, but in “Edge of the Earth” he surrounds himself with the words, an inspiring arrangement, and production that are bound to give you a lift if you need it.

Other comments: “Edge of the Earth” follows up Here And Now, which also featured guest musicians of Indigenous heritage such as Raye Zaragoza and fellow Canadian Ruby Waters, and shows Aysanabee to be one of Canada’s most prolific and prominent artists, releasing new music in each of the last four years.

Cam Blake, "Passenger"

CAM BLAKE, “Passenger”

Video link:  Passenger

About the artist:  Cam Blake is an alternative rock artist from Vancouver, B.C. who has to date released two albums and a remix album. I previously wrote about his song “Gravity”.

About the record: “Passenger” is a sweet change of pace for Cam, it’s more of an acoustic pop-folk track that really suits his voice. The song has a rather unconventional flow about it led by a jangly, carefree guitar melody that keeps going until later you might expect in a song. Anyone who enjoys travelling will appreciate the relatable lyrics, particularly during and nearing the end of a vacation. It’s always nice to be a passenger for a while when we can escape our regular routines.

Other comments: According to You Tube, a third album is in the works called Five Months In Manchester, so it looks like travelling and being away from home will be common themes.

Beauz, Pascal Letournon, Polar Bears, Stephen Puth, "Vertigo"

BEAUZ, PASCAL LETOUBLON, POLAR BEARS, STEPHEN PUTH, “Vertigo”

About the artists:  BEAUZ is the Asian-American dance production duo of brothers specializing in hard techno and noted for their strong presence on Instagram and Tik Tok and a loyal fan base called BADDIES. Pascal Letoublon is a French dance producer, while Polar Bears (formerly known as Electric Polar Bears) are an American dance production duo who in concert wear polar bear masks, and I’ve written about them several times. Stephen Puth is the talented younger brother of Charlie who had a #1 on the BILLCS Top 30 with Loud Luxury and Frank Walker in 2021, “Like Gold”.

About the record: Talking about the cadre of artists involved would take as long to play “Vertigo”, which is a brief 1:56 electronic bop in which Stephen Puth duets with an uncredited female vocal (which may or may not be his own sped up voice). Nonetheless, “Vertigo” is a catchy head-turner whose well-defined synth hook might just show up as an ID in a number of DJ’s sets.

Other comments: “Vertigo” is a shining example of how not to underestimate the power of brevity and conciseness.

Ernar, JeLa, Robbie Rosen, "Spirit"

ERNAR, JeLa, ROBBIE ROSEN, “Spirit”

About the artists:  Ernar is a 22 year old Kazakh dance producer whose style includes chill, tropical and deep house. JeLa is the performing name for NYC singer/songwriter Jessica Lattman, who is also a frequent collaborator with the other vocalist, former “American Idol” contestant and frequent visitor to this blog, Robbie Rosen.

About the record: “Spirit” is a pretty, uplifting, easy-going slice of dance/pop. If you’re not looking for bangers or frenetic electronic dance music, you can relax and chill while the deft blend of vocals by JeLa and Robbie along with a gentle story are sure to help alter your mood for the better. It’s also a slick introduction to the production work of Ernar, who aptly captures the flow of the song as well as the chemistry of the singers together.

Other comments: A release like “Spirit” could get easily lost in the shuffle. It’s a versatile song that’s suited for just about any pop playlist.

The Octopus Division, "Games"

THE OCTOPUS DIVISION, “Games”

About the artist: The Octopus Division is the performing name for San Diego producer and vocalist Matthew Muncie, who is a relative newcomer, having released several singles in 2024. His specialty is 80’s flavoured electronic pop.

About the record: “Games” weaves an intriguing story, culminating in a catchy chorus. The target of mid-80’s flavours is spot-on, particularly in the minimalist-sounding synth work. For those of us who were around, it’s a time-shift back to 1985 in the post-new wave era of groups like a-ha, Simple Minds, and Duran Duran. Matthew’s vocal suits the song but at times sounds like he’s holding back, and that could just be the way his inflection articulates the emotions in the song.

Other comments: Matthew’s point of reference for “Games” is “The Neverending Story”. “Games” is solid indie bedroom retro electronic pop that takes a few spins but sinks in nicely and deserves your attention.

Battleflagg, "I Gotta Love"

BATTLEFLAGG, “I Gotta Love”

About the artist: Veteran Philadelphia musician Jeff Hartwig (King Flux, The Dangs) leads Battleflagg, which is a collective of musicians who straddle the sub-genres within rock music to provide authentic songs that cut through the cynicism and all of the other daily crap out there.

About the record: “I Gotta Love” has an unconventional song structure in which Jeff and friends play out his treatise about winning over the object of his affection long before the song’s hook (and defining moment) drops. So you wait and then BAM! what a chorus – you know that it was all worth it. The remainder of “I Gotta Love” plays on that hook, and may strike some as a little long at 4:50, but its joyousness is contagious. The pristine production is by Daniel Knowles, noted for his recent work with Sharon Van Etten.

Other comments: The EP which contains “I Gotta Love”, called Solastalgia (which means “the homesickness you have when you are still at home”), also includes contributions by members of The War On Drugs, Japanese Breakfast, and Elvis Costello’s band. It’s Jeff Hartwig’s second EP for Battleflagg after returning to music from a sidestep into a career as a lawyer.
