#BILLCSNewMusicReport – August 30/23 spotlighting new songs by @FelixCartal & @KarenHarding @Moonwoodmusic @PeterFoldy @JerinJamesmusic

This week’s Report has eight fine new tracks for you to get to know that span the pop, rock, electronic and dance genres. It’s increasingly hard to whittle down my weekly list of new offerings to eight, but I somehow manage to do it, carrying over songs with potential to the following week if need be.

Among the features in the Report, you can check out my pick of the week, along with one from the host of online radio’s “Top 40 Timeline”, “Big Daddy” Russ Horton, plus “Modern Hype” online radio host Hunter Wilbur’s “Bop of the Week”. “The Musicman” James Rogers from online radio’s “3D Variety Show” has his Classic Five pop hits that take us back to 1987 this week.  And in case you missed them, you’ll find out which songs are #1 and the Fastest Riser on the BILLCS Top 30.

The BILLCS New Music Report is a work-in-progress and I welcome your suggestions so feel free to contact me at through my social media links right here.

SPOTLIGHTING

Felix Cartal, Karen Harding, "Need Your Love"

FELIX CARTAL, KAREN HARDING, “Need Your Love”

“Need Your Love” is the follow-up to 2021’s “Only One” (which peaked at #9 on the BILLCS Top 30) we were waiting for by the dream team of Canadian dance producer Felix Cartal and UK house music queen Karen Harding. It’s a vibrant and emotional track which is well suited for both dance music and Top 40 radio, as well as clubs. Karen’s potent and affecting vocal, which has a similar impact as Loreen’s “Tattoo”, plays off splendidly against Felix’s melodies and song structure.  “Need Your Love” also offers other creators a chance to listen to how a record can be made smartly, with the result being an instant new favourite. And be prepared folks – Felix plays the Burning Man festival this weekend, while Karen has her debut album, Take Me Somewhere, coming at the end of September.

Moonwood, "Let It Go"

MOONWOOD, “Let It Go”

Australian-American quintet Moonwood return with a take on a classic rock ballad with “Let It Go”. Although “Let It Go” is just over 5 minutes long, it’s a dreamy and sometimes heart-wrenching ballad that commands your attention, as the protagonist is stuck waiting for a train in town while communicating with his lover, who is uncertain about their relationship, and he realizes it may in fact be over. Moonwood is one tight unit as a band and once again singer Jake McCullough delivers an impressive vocal that will keep you glued to the story.

Peter Foldy, "Jump Like This"

PETER FOLDY, “Jump Like This”

L.A.-based Canadian singer/songwriter Peter Foldy returns with another bubbly reggae-spiced release, “Jump Like This”. The song is all about what makes you jump with joy, something that doesn’t happen all too often to everyone, but it’s a high that’s hard to come down from when it happens. The easy-going, summery melody follows similarly bright pop singles like “Fun, Fun, Fun” and “Friend Zone”. Peter has always had a knack for capturing special moments in time going back to his biggest Canadian success, “Bondi Junction”, and while he’s busy working more in film these days as a director and producer, I’m glad he continues to delight us with songs like “Jump Like This”.

Jerin James, "Fly Away"

JERIN JAMES, “Fly Away”

L.A.-based, Pennsylvania-born dance producer Jerin James returns after a protracted absence with the first single from his upcoming debut album The Wanderers, “Fly Away”. I’ve written about Jerin’s songs a number of times before, and his initial single “Birds and Bees” (featuring Devorano) reached #7 on the BILLCS Top 30 in 2020. “Fly Away” is a short (2:09) and much more progressive effort, with a bold, commanding backdrop and wordless vocals that are woven together as if they were making a foreign language unto themselves. “Fly Away” is a solid re-introduction to Jerin and his new project, which happily is released through Moe Shalizi’s label Pick Six Records.

FEATURING

Robby Hurricane, "We Got The Beat"

ROBBY HURRICANE, “We Got The Beat”

Toronto-area rock band Robby Hurricane have totally nailed their first release, a surprising cover of The Go Go’s “We Got The Beat”. The guys have the post-punk era vibe of the song down pat as well as the gritty energy of the original, which makes it so much fun, and the video (above) looks like it was shot in a… garage! Robby Hurricane came to be as a trio after guitarist/vocalist Sal Costa left the short-lived quartet Bonds of Mara, and consists of vocalist/guitarist Bryan Crouch, drummer Daryl Ralph and bassist Dave Benedict (ex- of Juno Award winning rock band Default). Go Go’s fans and those familiar with the band members’ previous works will totally get off on “We Got The Beat”.

Jay Bird, "Losing My Mind"

JAY BIRD, “Losing My Mind”

Earlier this year, Bay Area electronic dance producer Jay Bird brought us the infectious bass-laden deep house track “All Night Long”, and “Losing My Mind” continues in that vein as another immediate dance floor draw. Like producers such as Fisher or Acraze, Jay Bird moves away once again from a vocalist-driven track to one that’s carried by the rhythm and beats, and the repeated vocals are produced to allow you to be your craziest on the dance floor, should the mood strike you. It’s great to see Jay Bird expand his production techniques with fast and furious tracks like “Losing My Mind”.

Pauline Herr, joegarratt, "heartbreak" from the compilation Gouldian Finch 5

PAULINE HERR, joegarratt, “heartbreak”

“heartbreak” is a big future bass ballad which is so chock full of emotion, that it may be one of those rare songs you hear at an EDM show in a stadium which might cause your eyes to well up. American producer Pauline Herr and UK singer/songwriter joegarratt feed off each others talents, as Pauline goes to shake the room with huge future bass beats while joe wrings his voice dry. “heartbreak” is from the latest Bitbird compilation Gouldian Finch 5, which also features tracks by San Holo, Tails, OBLVYN, nikita the wicked, Eastghost, and other electronic music favourites.

John Paul White, Wildo DM, "Big Love"

JOHN PAUL WHITE, WILDO DM, “Big Love”

If you’ve ever wondered how an artist might cover as complex a track as Fleetwood Mac’s “Big Love”, then listen to the collaboration of the Grammy Award-winning half of The Civil Wars, John Paul White, and Swedish production outfit Wildo DM (who handpicked John Paul for the song) deliver the goods. In its original form, “Big Love” is all Lindsey Buckingham, no other members of Fleetwood Mac even played on it, with a wondrous, irrepressible vocal. The artists scale “Big Love” back, but not to the point of being yet another acoustic take. Both clearly understand how intense the original is, and John Paul is bang on with his expressive vocal and guitar playing. The production by Wildo DM presents some delightful subtleties that flesh out the backing track. Fans of the original song, Lindsey Buckingham, and John Paul White, will be pleased and impressed.

#BILLCSNewMusicReport – July 19/23 spotlighting new songs by @Grabbitz @Toniiamusic & @officialDuncan @thevoyAJer @DylanConrique & @_AlexanderStew @Whamofficial @AJRidgeley @GeorgeMofficial

The Report is back after a two week absence, which allowed me to vacation commitment-free in NYC, though of course I was often listening to new music at the hotel when I wasn’t out seeing Illenium in concert for the second time, or giving myself the dose of that ‘buzz’ that only The Big Apple can offer.  I have nine new songs for your listening pleasure this week, including a spritely remix of a UK 80’s hit that never got the same attention in North America. My absence did create a long list of songs I’m enjoying which sadly will have to be whittled down, but I expect to bring you the best of the lot in the coming weeks.

Among the features in the Report, you can check out my pick of the week, along with one from the host of online radio’s “Top 40 Timeline”, “Big Daddy” Russ Horton, plus “Modern Hype” online radio host Hunter Wilbur’s “Bop of the Week”. “The Musicman” James Rogers from online radio’s “3D Variety Show” has his Classic Five pop hits feature, which this week teleports us back to 1970-71.  And in case you missed them on Monday, you’ll find out what are the #1 and Fastest Riser songs on the BILLCS Top 30.

The BILLCS New Music Report is a work-in-progress and I welcome your suggestions so feel free to contact me at through my social media links right here.

SPOTLIGHTING

Grabbitz, "Hero"

GRABBITZ, “Hero”

“Hero” is a hard-hitting and memorable progressive electronic release from L.A.-based, Buffalo-raised Grabbitz (aka Nick Chiari), who has recently been on tour opening for Dabin, and of course has collaborated famously with Rezz as well as Wooli, VALORANT, Subtronics, and Robert DeLong. It’s a song that you could associate with an unmade superhero movie, TV show or video game, and its heavy synth rhythm track just begs for accompanying images. What really makes this song stand out are Grabbitz’s verses mid-song, set only to minimal synths – and then there’s this wicked drop! The piano coda is also sublime and fitting. Dance music fans, “Hero” is certain to be one of your new favourites!

Toniia, Duncan, "Broken Heart"

TONIIA, DUNCAN, “Broken Heart”

“Broken Heart” is the intriguing collaboration between German progressive electronic producer Toniia (aka Emre Yilmaz) and Denver-born pop/R&B/hip hop vocalist/songwriter Duncan, who at times in his career has worked with Pitbull, Timbaland and Afrojack, among many others. The song recounts those times where a relationship has just ended and the plethora of emotions that are stuck in our heads with no immediate way out. Duncan’s raw, streetwise vocal is really unique – alternately soulful, anguished, and self-loathing – while Toniia’s production is forceful when necessary, but more often is the understanding melody behind the pain of the lyrics. “Broken Heart” has been in the works for a couple of years, and Toniia and Duncan found a way to refine it and make it work even better.

Voyajer, "Come Around"

VOYAJER, “Come Around”

Voyajer is talented new American dance producer A.J. Cassarella, and “Come Around” is his debut release. The energy of this track is contagious, which makes it a most pleasing and unexpected summer banger. Voyajer has quality on his mind with his organized and crisp production, with well-placed synths and beats that revolve around a splendid uncredited male vocal. The layers of effects stand out on their own rather than being submerged into a blurry melting pot, and help the vocal really soar. “Come Around” is a crackerjack start for Voyajer and I can’t wait to see where his next releases will take us.

Dylan Conrique, Alexander Stewart, "Birthday Cake"

DYLAN CONRIQUE, ALEXANDER STEWART, “Birthday Cake”

Now you might be going, wait a minute, wasn’t “Birthday Cake” released last year? Why yes it was, as a solo track which went viral by Dylan Conrique, the 19 year old San Francisco-area born singer and actress, noted for her role on TV’s “The Rookie”. It’s a gorgeous, tender multi-tissue song, written for a friend after the loss of her mother to cancer, and the addition of Toronto’s Alexander Stewart and his smooth tones to the song really enhances it and gives it another perspective with another voice. This duet is highly deserving of your attention, so don’t sleep on it!

BONUS!

Wham!, "Club Tropicana (Balearic Breeze remix)

WHAM!, “Club Tropicana” (Balearic Breeze remix)

To celebrate the reissue of their Singles collection on vinyl, “Club Tropicana” by Wham! is given a fresh official remix. It’s an appropriately refreshing, bubbly update of a song that never became a hit in North America, and takes us back to the pre-solo career days of George Michael, when he was writing songs that tapped into the social consciousness of youth of the day. “Club Tropicana” celebrates the good times to which we all look forward, and the majority of Wham!’s early songs hold up well 40 years later. Be sure to check out the “Wham!” documentary on Netflix, which explores George’s friendship with bandmate Andrew Ridgeley, how important they were to each other, and how critical both of them were to the success of Wham!

FEATURING

Mobius Radio, "Can We All"

MOBIUS RADIO, “Can We All”

“Can We All” is another installment in the forthcoming Mobius Radio album project, brought to you and curated by Canadian musician and producer Dylan Hennessy along with input and inspiration from renown broadcaster Jeff Woods. The theme of the project is a pirate radio station, and I’m looking forward to the completed result. “Can We All” is a fine slice of melodic rock that showcases Dylan’s guitar work as well as an instrument called boomwhackers, which are tuned percussion tubes. The Mobius Radio album is due in August as well as a live launch in Toronto.

GRAYtheband, K-Riz, "'Bit Late"

GRAYTheBand, K-RIZ, “‘Bit Late”

Edmonton’s Gray Ford, under his collective’s name GrayTheBand, is back with another winning track, “‘Bit Late”, from a forthcoming album. Like predecessor “All Done” (also the title of the album), “‘Bit Late” features a potent vocal by Gray that’s the calling card for this kind of soulful slice of pop/rock. Rapper K-Riz, also from Edmonton, is added into the mix with some slick verses midway that remind me of acclaimed Canadian rapper K-Os. All in all, “‘Bit Late” is another highly listenable track whose somewhat retro appeal comes off as fresh and worthy of your consideration in anticipation of the full album.

Tisoki, "Wish You Weren't Here"

TISOKI, “Wish You Weren’t Here”

With the release of his new EP Euphoria, I dive deeper into the musical world of Bradley Edwards, otherwise known as Tisoki, after writing up another track on the EP called “Let You Down” (with Pauline Herr) a while back. And the versatility of the songs on Euphoria (with contributions from San Holo and Fabian Mazur, among others) are sure to be the honey to attract fans of all kinds of electronic dance music, though at times it’s quite unconventional. “Wish You Weren’t Here”, co-written with British electronic artist joegarratt – featured not long ago himself in these blog pages with his track “uncanny” – is a head-scratcher at start, a brisk electronic bop with some affecting vocals in the first half of the song which lay the emotional foundation. But the rest of the song draws from drum ‘n bass and is sure to make fans of that sub-genre jump and dance along. “Wish You Weren’t Here” is a grower and might become one of the favourites on the EP for Tisoki fans.

Me Nd Adam, "Best of Me"

ME ND ADAM, “Best of Me”

“Best of Me” is a gritty new rocker from Austin, Texas duo Me Nd Adam, whose song “Get The Money” I wrote about almost two years ago. Since that time, Vince Winik and Adam Walker have opened for The Killers in concert, thanks to an endorsement from the band on their social media, and “Best of Me” actually emerged from a songwriting session with George Gekas of The Revivalists. While I can see why Killers fans are drawn to the anthemic, no-nonsense style Me Nd Adam puts forth in “Best of Me”, the artist whose sound comes closest to mind on this track is 2010’s alternative faves Passion Pit. “Best of Me” is solid stuff that’s meant for live performances, and is culled from Me Nd Adam’s upcoming album American Drip Pt. II.

#BILLCSNewMusicReport – June 15/23 spotlighting new songs by @JohnnyOrlando & @AliGatie @GATTUSO_music & @Jaljaofficial Tim Young @soundslikeTim @ChetPorter

Every week, I listen to 30-40 new songs for the BILLCS New Music Report and perhaps eventually for my bi-weekly BILLCS Top 30 chart. Some songs may carry over for a few weeks until I make my decision about them. I pay careful attention to the “growers”, because I can’t decide on some songs until after more than two listens. The songs are usually listened to playlist-style, so in a way they are competing with each other for attention, and to determine how well they would be played in a mix of songs. So that’s my weekly strategy to bring you some great new tunes!

Among the features in the Report, you can check out my pick of the week, along with one from the host of “Top 40 Timeline”, “Big Daddy” Russ Horton, plus Hunter Wilbur’s “Bop of the Week”. “The Musicman” James Rogers has his Classic Five pop hits feature, whose songs are from 1977-78 this week.  You’ll also see what songs were in my Top 5 in my BILLCS Top 30 5-10-15-20… years ago feature. There are a few nice surprises on these charts, and in two of those years, Armin van Buuren had the #1 songs!

The BILLCS New Music Report is a work-in-progress and I welcome your suggestions so feel free to contact me @billcs on Twitter @thebillcs on Instagram or @BILLCSMusicProjects on Facebook.

SPOTLIGHTING

Johnny Orlando & Ali Gatie, "When I'm Gone"

JOHNNY ORLANDO, ALI GATIE, “When I’m Gone”

“When I’m Gone” is a bit of a grower, which is perhaps why Canadian pop radio hasn’t latched onto it as hard as past Johnny Orlando and Ali Gatie releases. But it’s a fine, particularly well-produced song with some familiar bits, and two voices which offset each other nicely. 20 year-old Johnny, a Mississauga, Ontario native, especially sounds super, more soulful than past releases, while Toronto-based Iraqi-Canadian Ali’s voice is instantly recognizable. At times, the melody reminds me of Mario Winans’ early 00’s hit “I Don’t Wanna Know”, but that’s where the comparisons end. Give “When I’m Gone” some time and it may just be one of your new favourites. To me, it’s a song-in-waiting as an international breakout for both artists.

Johnny Orlando plays the 1MX Music Festival at Dockyards in London, England on July 8th.

GATTUSO feat. Jalja, "Out Of My Mind"

GATTÜSO, JALJA, “Out Of My Mind”

NYC-based, Israel-born dance producer GATTÜSO is back with some crisp deep house with “Out Of My Mind”, featuring rising British vocalist Jalja, whose voice is finding its way onto a number of dance releases as of late. “Out Of My Mind” is definitely one for the dance clubs, an ideal late night track about those times when you regret making certain decisions. Jalja has a dynamic voice that I’m sure we’ll continue to hear more of, and GATTÜSO offers a lot of fresh synth sounds which set “Out Of My Mind” apart from the rest.

Tim Young, "Lavender"

TIM YOUNG, “Lavender”

“Lavender” is an engaging, loud, no-holds-barred track by Grammy-certified NYC singer/songwriter Tim Young (for his work in the film “The Greatest Showman” and the stage play soundtrack for “Dear Evan Hansen”). Despite the song being, as he says “gay AF” because of his own experience with the smell of lavender, many of us have had times in our lives that when someone leaves a relationship, or even a room, their scent is left behind. And that smell also gets stuck in your head and messes with it too. Tim’s vocal is alternately sensitive and wild in a busy but successful arrangement, and ultimately “Lavender” gets snugly under your skin.

Chet Porter, "222"

CHET PORTER, “222”

Quickly following up the dazzling “Today, Tomorrow, Forever”, Canadian electronic producer Chet Porter brings us the busy and lush “222”. This instrumental is a real soundscape of synths. There’s so much going on here that it takes a few listens before your ears can figure out where they want to focus. “222” is essentially a symphony of sorts unto itself, with all of the synths and effects providing a futuristic overall sound. If a variation of “222” was played on traditional instruments, it would probably be a progressive classical piece, so you’re bound to enjoy its musicality as well as all of the additional sound flourishes that Chet provides.

FEATURING

Osvaldo Supino, "Drip Drop"

OSVALDO SUPINO, “Drip Drop”

Following up his recent pop delight “Stuck on This Feeling”, Italy’s Osvaldo Supino continues to preview an upcoming album with the darker house sounds of “Drip Drop”. In it, he muses about being free of many distractions in order to focus on what’s going on and being authentic. “Drip Drop” has a hypnotic rhythm and a vocal by Osvaldo that gently seduces you to surrender to real living. Lucky European and UK fans will have a chance to see talented Osvaldo performing live on a summer tour that begins next month.

Xana, "babyblue"

XANA, “babyblue”

Following the acoustic “bet you’ll get off on this”, Vancouver singer/songwriter Xana returns with the driving, emotional alt.pop of “babyblue”.  Whereas with “get off” Xana channeled singers like Jewel and Brandi Carlile, here it’s a mix of them along with Melissa Etheridge and Alanis Morissette. “babyblue” is a promising track that’s the aural equivalent of pouring through old yearbooks, photos, and journals, and realizing what kind of a life you’ve had so far, but also reminiscing about those who are elsewhere in the world, or even gone from our lives, and wondering if they’re still okay. The vocal effects at the end of the song – reminding me somewhat of Laurie Anderson’s early 80’s songs – represent an outpouring of the mixed emotions of the song, but overall the creativity of “babyblue” leaves you satisfied and smiling.

Lexi Mariah, "No Worries"

LEXI MARIAH, “No Worries”

“No Worries” is a fun electronic dance bop that will keep your ears perked up while you pay attention to the relatable lyrics in this original co-written by Connecticut singer Lexi Mariah. It’s a welcome slice of energetic dance pop from this singer, whose voice I have mentioned previously would sound great next to songs by Dua Lipa, Bebe Rexha and others. “No Worries” has dashes of Britney and Miley that will extend the appeal of the song, which is about brushing off your worries without appearing to feel slighted, but masking those feelings deeper inside. Stick with “No Worries” and you’ll be happy you did.

Claudia Cappelletti, "Mine"

CLAUDIA CAPPELLETTI, “Mine”

Italian singer/songwriter Claudia Cappelletti brings us a powerful new song that speaks to women’s rights in particular called “Mine”. Claudia has a commanding, convincing, almost Broadway-styled voice that exudes passion for her subject. For a lot of women, “Mine” could also be about realizing that you are unique and worthy as a person. But anthemic qualities and direct lyrics that Claudia has created in “Mine” are sure to grab you and make you think, especially of the women around the world who even today have little rights in their own countries because their societies refuse to change, for reasons often pointing at religion. Claudia has had so far only a handful of releases since 2020 and I’m sure we’ll be hearing much more from her.

SPOTLIGHTING

Cash Cash, "Bleach (Move On)"

CASH CASH, “Bleach (Move On)”

New Jersey dance trio Cash Cash are coming full circle, returning to a vibrant melodic pop/dance style with early 2010’s vibes that also features vocals this time by their own Jean Paul Maklouf. He absolutely kills it on “Bleach (Move On)”, and I hope that means we’ll hear more of his affecting vocal! After considerable success over the last decade, which includes Billboard Hot 100 and dance club play chart smashes and regular residencies in Las Vegas (where I saw them perform last summer), Cash Cash have switched labels and seem to have gotten some of their stylistic freedom back. “Bleach (Move On)” is nothing like what they’ve released recently, and fans of One Republic and Bastille will enjoy it equally as much as dance music fans.

Angie Stone, "Good Man"

ANGIE STONE, “Good Man”

Angie Stone returns with her first album in four years called Love Language and from it we have this new classic slice of R&B, “Good Man”. It’s solid R&B that goes down easy and does not disappoint. Angie’s silky smooth, expressive voice is the gift that she has shared with us in one form or another for many years. She was a member of one of rap’s first female groups, The Sequence, and spent time in the 90’s in groups Vertical Hold and Devox, before singing on one of the seminal R&B albums of the last 25 years, D’Angelo’s Brown Sugar. She finally got to release her own songs solo soon after, on 1999’s amazing Black Diamond, and is probably best known for the R&B and dance music classic “Wish I Didn’t Miss You” from 2002, which coincidentally debuted on my BILLCS Top 30 chart 21 years ago this week. In the intervening years she’s never stopped working, whether it’s recording albums, playing shows, or taking acting lessons. So even though she’s never been away, “Good Man” is a strong welcome back release that should do well at R&B radio next to the latest Lizzo and Alicia Keys songs.

Luis Torres, "Freak Like Me"

LUIS TORRES, “Freak Like Me”

Toronto’s Luis Torres is on a roll after recently collaborating with DLMT and Rico 56 on the wonderful “Wildfire” which recently debuted on the BILLCS Top 30, so it’s no wonder that Tiësto’s Musical Freedom label has grabbed this one for release. “Freak Like Me” is actually a rework of Lee Walker’s 2016 take on DJ Deeon’s 90’s house classic featuring vocals by Katy B. Luis pitches up the vocals and builds a slamming new standout rhythm track around the song’s chorus. “Freak Like Me” should be an instant add for clubs and DJ’s can certainly have fun interpolating any one of the remixes of the Lee Walker take from the likes of Armand van Helden or Sonny Fodera with Luis’ version to create something original for their sets.

Jake Huffman, "Body Talk"

JAKE HUFFMAN, “Body Talk”

Connecticut singer/songwriter Jake Huffman has just released a four song EP called Younger. I’ve already written about previous singles “Martyr” and “Babe” which are included, but “Body Talk” is an entirely different cup of tea from those solid alternative rock flavoured tracks and my favourite track from the EP. “Body Talk” is a bluesy R&B-flavoured rock track that benefits from a gravelly vocal by Jake and some chunky bass sounds (maybe a mix of bass guitar and synths?). It’s got a simple, catchy chorus and an enticing rhythm which are instantly appealing.

FEATURING

TASBA, "Fantasia" (radio edit)

TASBA, “Fantasia” (radio mix)

“Fantasia” is a moody but intriguing slice of instrumental deep house by rising Denver electronic dance producer TASBA (aka Tanya Barrera). I can certainly visualize and sense the excitement of being taken to somewhere dreamy and special, and “Fantasia” has all of the right elements of a progressive electronic production to place yourself there. It’s all about the atmosphere, which is why the beats don’t get too heavy, though it does contain a nice drop (there is also a radio edit of “Fantasia” which you can listen to right here). If you’re in the Denver, Colorado area, you can watch for TASBA in concert and I’m pleased to say that she is performing quite regularly.

Tyler Garrett, "Automatic"

TYLER GARRETT, “Automatic”

L.A. -based singer/songwriter Tyler Garrett continues to release complex electronic songs both lyrically and musically, the latest being “Automatic”. This one is definitely aimed at those who enjoy more progressive songs by the likes of Gareth Emery and Illenium. “Automatic” does a good job at showcasing Tyler’s sharp vocal, even though it’s quite a busy, layered production that would really shine if played over stadium speakers. Repeated listens will help draw you in to the dark, intense vibe of the song.

Mobius Radio, "The More You Know"

MOBIUS RADIO, “The More You Know”

Mobius Radio is a recent project formed by Canadian singer/songwriter/guitarist Dylan Hennessy, which brings you the single “The More You Know”. The song is a part of an upcoming conceptual self-produced release that revolves around music being played on a pirate radio station. The voice other than Dylan’s which you hear in “The More You Know” is long-time Canadian broadcaster Jeff Woods, who has helped Dylan shepherd and shape the new release, and is featured in the video above along with drummer Alex Van Briggle. “The More You Know” is a stalwart rocker that will appeal to fans of late 90’s, early 00’s Canadian rockers like Our Lady Peace, I Mother Earth, Moist and more, with enough edge to attract fans of 00’s bands like Billy Talent, Three Days Grace, and Black Veil Brides. Dylan’s appealing vocal and an interesting message are also highlights of “The More You Know”.

Tisoki & Pauline Herr, "Let You Down"

TISOKI, PAULINE HERR, “Let You Down”

Despite releasing music for most of the last decade, I must admit that I am new to the music of both Tisoki and Pauline Herr, though both are established with electronic music fans. Tisoki (L.A. based British producer Bradley Edwards) has a new EP coming soon called Euphoria, which will also include this new single “Let You Down”, initially recorded as a demo about two years ago. American producer Pauline Herr is popular on the live electronic festival circuit, and this collaboration gels nicely. I’ll call it emo-electronic – it’s carefully crafted, sometimes minimal-sounding electronic music featuring numerous unconventional elements, some of which could be drawn from drum ‘n bass and perhaps even tribal rhythms, as well as a dejected-sounding but empathetic female vocal (which may be Pauline or someone else). Fans of the genre looking for something fresh will be engrossed.

#BILLCSNewMusicReport – May 17/23 spotlighting songs by #LouisPax @BensonBoone @Frankmusik @FrancescoYates @Gustaphmusic @ForrerRemo

My current music discoveries, including submissions to the blog, are on overload, which is hardly a bad thing, but it may prevent me from writing about songs that I like that stand out a little less than those that do appear in this weekly report. This week I’ve got 10 songs, with 6 in the spotlight, including two from this past weekend’s highly enjoyable EuroVision contest.

Among the features in the Report, you can check out my pick of the week, along with one from the host of “Top 40 Timeline”, “Big Daddy” Russ Horton, plus Hunter Wilbur’s “Bop of the Week”. “The Musicman” James Rogers has his Classic Five pop hits feature, featuring songs from 1975.  What was I listening to 20 years ago in the early days of the BILLCS Top 30? You’ll find out below as I flash back to my chart from 2003 – so hard to believe what was number one!

The BILLCS New Music Report is a work-in-progress and I welcome your suggestions so feel free to contact me @billcs on Twitter @thebillcs on Instagram or @BILLCSMusicProjects on Facebook.

SPOTLIGHTING

Louis Pax, "The Road Back"

LOUIS PAX, “The Road Back”

Hailing from Malmō, Sweden, pop/rock trio Louis Pax return with their own take on 80’s inspired songs with the longing of “The Road Back”. Last year, Louis Pax soared right to #1 on the BILLCS Top 30 with the irresistible pop confection “Bad Things”, which also placed #5 on my year end list, and was followed by a few additional singles, including “Ophelia” which reached #9 on my chart.  “The Road Back” has the band back in tight form with a song about finding your way back to love again after a relationship ended where the other person felt love was “synthetic”. Singer/guitarist Oscar Reingsdahl’s gentle and earnest vocal style continues to score big time, and even though the band draws from a myriad of influences, the sound of Louis Pax is refreshing and commands your attention. Louis Pax’s EP In Case I Don’t See Ya (Part 1) arrives on June 1.Benson Boone, "Coffee Cake"

BENSON BOONE, “Coffee Cake”

Like his previous BILLCS Top 30 chart entries “In The Stars” (which got to #2) and “Before You”, Washington singer/songwriter Benson Boone continues to be a young balladeer of the moment with a number of similarly touching songs on his new EP Pulse. But with uptempo songs like “Coffee Cake”, he showcases more of his other pop side. “Coffee Cake” immediately stands out for its wonderful lyricism which transports you to the various scenes of the song as you can visualize it unfolding. It’s about someone longing for love or companionship but not yet prepared to make his move, preferring to have fleeting company at the local diner while he people-watches. As a good songwriter does, Benson lets you get into his head so he can get into yours, and by doing so lets you know that at some point or another we’ve all those scenes where he takes you in “Coffee Cake”.

Frankmusik, "Doreen"

FRANKMUSIK, “Doreen”

I try to keep up with Frankmusik’s aggressive current one song per month schedule, since his releases are of impeccable quality and document the work of an incredibly talented indie artist who continues to take the time to please his many fans. “Doreen” is certainly one of his better releases, a vibrant electronic pop release with a driving rhythm and a top notch vocal. When songs like “Doreen” leap out from your speakers amidst a lot of other new music, then you know it’s a keeper. Like “Remains” and “The Half Moon Came Up In The Sky”, “Doreen” ranks right up there with some of Frankmusik’s best music from the 2010-2014 era.

Francesco Yates, "Chanel"

FRANCESCO YATES, “Chanel”

Toronto’s Francesco Yates has quickly released a third consecutive single, another punchy rocker called “Chanel”. This one’s a steamier release that includes some lines that are song title pop culture references (“that don’t impress me much” and “livin’ la vida loca” for two). It’s accompanied by a video that showcases Francesco and some young lovelies flirting and teasing before the camera, which is obviously all intended to be leading up to … something (that we don’t get to see of course). As might be expected, there are a few raucous Francesco Yates screams and some dandy guitar riffing. With previous splendid songs like “Jimi” and “Thunderbomb”, I’d recommend not sleeping on whatever album or EP release that Francesco has in the cards for us soon.

Gustaph, "Because of You"

Remo Forrer, "Watergun"

GUSTAPH, “Because Of You”

REMO FORRER, “Watergun”

This year’s EuroVision song contest yielded a number of entertaining performances and some very good song choices, even though, to me, going into it open-minded, the winner ended up obvious – one of my current favourite songs, “Tattoo” by Loreen. Two completely different songs that I was drawn to have held my attention through repeated listens, and they are the 90’s dance-flavoured “Because of You” by Belgium’s Gustaph, and “Watergun” and its touching call for peace and unity by Switzerland’s Remo Forrer.

“Because of You” is a new queer dance anthem whose roots are in the C+C Music Factory and Crystal Waters releases of the 90’s. It’s all about the freedom to love whoever you want, and Gustaph showed off his fine voice and magnetic stage presence on the EuroVision stage. “Because of You” is deserving of international exposure because of its timely lyrics and because Gustaph is simply meant to be performing in front of a wider audience.

“Watergun” is a softer, poignant anti-war song that will resonate with any listener, thanks to the powerful and versatile tones of 21 year old Remo Forrer. Remo previously won the Voice of Switzerland contest in 2020, and clearly has innate talents that led him to EuroVision. I think the more playful and dramatic competition was a little too fierce for “Watergun”, but like Rosa Linn’s “Snap”, which became a worldwide smash after finishing 20th at last year’s contest, if the public hears something they enjoy, then it will take hold of it and run with it. Thanks to Remo’s beautiful performance, “Watergun” is well-deserving of international exposure.

FEATURING

Wingtip, Bre Kennedy, "Down (Exit Song)"

WINGTIP, BRE KENNEDY, “Down (Exit Song)”

“Down (Exit Song)” is a surprising change of pace for Brooklyn-based producer/DJ Wingtip (aka Nick Perloff-Giles), who usually records electronic pop. It’s a charming and unconventional acoustic duet with Nashville-based singer/songwriter Bre Kennedy which documents a relationship … well sort of … between a couple who don’t really know what they want from each other. There seem to be too many obstacles in the way so perhaps the resolution is to “break your heart over breakfast”. The vocals and melody are instantly memorable, so “Down (Exit Song)” is well worth adding to your favourite alternative pop playlist.

Cloverdale, "Lifted"

CLOVERDALE, “Lifted”

Halifax producer/DJ Cloverdale returns with a simmering and bold slice of techno-house called “Lifted”. This is an ideal track for club DJ’s to spin at the height of a busy evening and will be sure to keep dancers on the floor. It’s all about the rhythm and the beat under flashing lights and lasers, with some sliced-and-diced repeated female vocals creating additional intensity. Cloverdale has tailor-made “Lifted” for clubs, and his fellow producers and DJ’s should not hesitate to add this one into their mixes.

AMNES, "Otaku"

AMNES, “Otaku”

One thing that electronic and dance music lovers may not realize is that when producers create a full length instrumental track, there is usually a back story behind it. Last month I introduced you to perhaps the most accessible track of Belgian producer AMNES’ new EP Nur called “stamina” featuring L.A. singer artemis orion. The rest of the tracks on Nur are indeed instrumental, but the pervading themes throughout the EP as a back story are reflecting, rebuilding and re-energizing. AMNES apparently spent a long time not interacting with others, and Nur ultimately is about perseverance and being ready to put on your A-game. “Otaku” was previously released as a single and is a future bass-inspired progressive house track which club DJ’s would enjoy when bridging a set between mid-tempo and faster mixes. AMNES is one of the most creative new producers on the scene, which you can also hear in his recent remix of San Holo’s “Don’t Look Down”.

Honey Gentry, "Under Taurus"

HONEY GENTRY, “Under Taurus”

“Under Taurus” is an electronic pop ballad about growing into adulthood and developing your own ideals and path, instead of choosing to follow what others want you to do. Honey Gentry is a new UK-based singer/songwriter with an EP, Different Water, arriving on May 23. “Under Taurus” is quiet, deliberate and ambitious – its middle section may be a touch too slow – and Honey’s pristine, angelic voice provides an interesting contrast to her song in similar ways to Lana Del Rey and Tori Amos in their songs. So “Under Taurus” is clearly directed at the thinkers among us, particularly those who prefer to act on their thoughts regardless of what others may think, say or do.

SPOTLIGHTING

Gareth Emery feat. Maria Lynn, "Missing You" (Ben Gold remix)

GARETH EMERY, MARIA LYNN, “Missing You” (Ben Gold remix)

Something Gareth Emery always does well is to create an emotional ballad that goes over particularly well at his spectacular laser-laden concerts or at festivals. While the original of “Missing You” is half-ballad and half-rave up, British trance producer and remixer Ben Gold revs up the rhythm in the first half, and creates an even more layered, enhanced second half. While leaving Maria Lynn’s tender vocal in tact, Ben’s remix actually cranks up the euphoria level which turns a very good ballad into a heartfelt and fervid anthem. At the end, a big comforting hug is highly recommended.

joegarratt, "uncanny"

joegarratt, “Uncanny”

British electronic alternative pop singer/songwriter joegarratt has an out-of-left-field surprise with “Uncanny”. In the song he zeroes in on the essence of the dream pop sub-genre by creating a song about basking in success while losing sight of what else is important outside of that achievement. The song has a moving, uncharacteristic structure (watch for a false ending along the way), and the melody is moody but rhythmic enough to keep you swaying. joegarratt’s voice at times seems disembodied but still affecting, and I would draw “Uncanny” to the attention of fans of Porter Robinson and James Blake.

Chet Porter feat. fknsyd, "Today Tomorrow Forever"

CHET PORTER, fknsyd, “Today Tomorrow Forever”

It’s often quite a treat when Canadian progressive electronic whiz Chet Porter drops a new song, and “Today Tomorrow Forever” is his first in about two years. Teaming up with rising electronic star fknsyd (about whom little is known online, though she has already collaborated with the likes of R.L. Grime, Rezz, and Manila Killa), “Today Tomorrow Forever” bursts with energy in a playful mix that uses its effects judiciously. It’s the kind of song that will make your ears perk up and immediately take notice when you hear it at a concert or festival. Experimental and jubilant, if “Today Tomorrow Forever” is a taste of Chet Porter mach-2023, then I can’t wait to hear more.

Mahalo & Money For Nothing, "Everlasting"

MAHALO, MONEY FOR NOTHING, “Everlasting”

L.A.-based dance producer Mahalo teams up with British production duo Money For Nothing for the deep house bliss of “Everlasting”. That uncredited female vocal sounds awfully familiar – perhaps co-writer UK singer Gabrielle Aplin – and it’s the focal point of this banger, particularly all those stunning high notes. There’s definitely a lot of chemistry that went into such a tidy but infectious mix, with some dashes of techno, by all of the players. “Everlasting” should have no problem drumming up support at dance music radio and in clubs.

FEATURING

Kacey Fifield & Nippandab, "Petty"

KACEY FIFIELD, NIPPANDAB, “Petty”

“Petty” is a grower that you shouldn’t sleep on, so make sure that it gets your full attention for a couple of spins. Co-written with mentor and frequent blog visitor Robbie Rosen, and produced by India’s Nippandab (who was also at the control’s for Kacey’s house-flavoured “Toxic” from last summer from her album Between The Lines), “Petty” creates its own lane for Kacey among her songs largely for young adults and teens, and she minces no sentiments in calling out a previous friend/lover for their inconsiderate behaviour and actions. “Petty” is a swift turnaround back to dance music after the recent and more acoustic “Selfish”, and Nippandab navigates the course with rich deep house rhythms and synths.

Julian Cross feat. Afrojack, "All I Need"

JULIAN CROSS, AFROJACK, “All I Need”

“All I Need” is a perfectly agreeable eurohouse track that goes down easy that partners fresh vocalist Julian Cross with the legend who is Afrojack. It’s a fine showcase for Belgian singer Julian, who had his first big break as a teenager a few years ago and has never looked back through his association with the Armada label. And having the opportunity to team up with Afrojack is no mean feat even with that connection. “All I Need” has a bright, and memorable synth hook and a rhythm that doesn’t let up. Julian’s voice totally suits the song, though I wish it would have had an opportunity to soar at points when the melody does just that, which could have lent it some anthemic qualities. I think more could be brought out in “All I Need” in remixes.

Moonwood, "Curfew"

MOONWOOD, “Curfew”

Australia-based rock quintet Moonwood have a great flair for melody within the genre, which carries relatable stories and particularly cool vocals by singer Jake McCullough. Following up the recent single “Lady In Red”, “Curfew” offers a familiar mix of guitars, bass, drums and keyboards and a classic rock song structure, and it’s all tight and spot on. So if your thing is early 2000s’ rock by Lifehouse, Fuel, Powderfinger and others, Moonwood does a fine job of reigniting that appeal and reshaping that sound for the 2020’s.

Deep Chills & Tilsen, "Goodbye"

DEEP CHILLS, TILSEN, “Goodbye”

“Goodbye” is a warm and touching midtempo melodic house track that ruminates over those times where relationships come to an end. Italian producer Deep Chills reteams with Canadian singer/songwriter Tilsen, who offers up an empathetic vocal in her high range as she relates the feelings after the fact while knowing that there is no other solution. Deep Chills delivers his usual classy arrangement which grasps the various moods within the song at the right times along with providing other subtleties in the background.

#BILLCSTop30 #663 – April 10/23

After a significant change-up at the top of the chart two weeks ago, the songs at the top settle in, as a new groundswell of activity forms further down. And I really fought a battle with myself with some of the songs that debuted this week, so I suspect that the ones that didn’t will follow suit in two weeks.

REMINDER: As with the BILLCS  New Music Report, I’m now embedding the video link in the artwork for the song or the artist, which hopefully will allow the blog page to load faster and smoothly.  So you now have to click on the photos above the write up to hear the song or watch the video. Check out my ONLINE RADIO SHOWS below too as they are increasingly tied in with this blog.  As most of you know by know, I host 3 online radio shows – The Big 20 and two iterations of Your Weekend New Music Mix – and produce 2 online radio segments – my new music and retro picks of the week – that are all pre-recorded.

Cerrone & Mercer featuring Brendan Reilly - The Only One

Sitting comfortably at #1 for a second time is “The Only One” by the comeback kid himself, 70’s disco producer, with fellow French producer Mercer and UK vocalist Brendan Reilly, from the album Cerrone By Cerrone. Long may Cerrone continue to make music! At 70 years old, I do believe he is the second oldest artist to reach #1 on this chart. Bettye LaVette, at 76 last year, technically holds that record with “The Last Goodbye” with Odesza, though she was a teenager when she recorded her original “Let Me Down Easy” in 1965.

Frank Walker featuring Ella Henderson, "I Go Dancing"

“I Go Dancing” by Frank Walker and Ella Henderson holds tight at #4, above. Frank has a new one out now, teaming up with Stephen Puth again, for “Waiting”, below.

Frank Walker & Stephen Puth, "Waiting"

“I Feel Like Dancing” by Jason Mraz (above) puts the kapow in the chart this week by soaring 20-5 as the Fastest Riser for a second chart in a row, throwing it immediately into contention for #1 along with the four songs above it. Jason also has another preview of his upcoming album Mystical Magical Rhythmical Radical Ride available called “You Might Like It”, check it out below. “I Feel Like Dancing” is Jason’s 5th Top 5 entry.

Jason Mraz, "You Might Like It"Dabin & Kai Wachi featuring Lo Spirit - Hollow

Also landing in the Top 10 are two very different songs back to back. The progressive melodic electronic track “Hollow” (above) by Dabin, Kai Wachi and Lø Spirit climbs 13-9, becoming Dabin’s second Top 10 entry. And UK-born artist Waiting For Smith’s gentle, feel-good track “Heal” (below) rises 12-10.

Waiting For Smith, "Heal"

The Boy From The South, "Amazing-Man"

In any other week it would have been the Fastest Riser, but Spain’s The Boy From The South is Top 10 bound with the jaunty “Amazing-Man”, which vaults 25-13.

Boy Aries, "Drive"

Toronto duo Boy Aries breaks loose of the lower reaches of the chart and their song “Drive” and its insanely catchy verse “turn the car around” leap 22-15.

St Humain, "Memento"

“Memento” by St Humain is another track with a strong melodic hook and it climbs 27-21, from his new EP Metadramatic.

JIMIN, "Like Crazy (English version)"

For the next several weeks I’ll continue to rave about JIMIN’s track “Like Crazy”, whose English version deservedly debuted at #1 last week on the Billboard Hot 100.  I’m certainly wasting no time putting it on my chart at #22. JIMIN’s parent group BTS had one entry on this chart with “DNA” back in 2018, while fellow band member SUGA was featured on MAX’s “Blueberry Eyes” in late 2020. Both of the latter songs reached #13. “Like Crazy” really deserves to be a Top 40 radio hit too.

James Bay, "Brilliant Still"

Returning to the chart for a fourth appearance is UK singer/songwriter James Bay with a track from his new album Leap called “Brilliant Still” at #24. It’s a heartfelt song about helping out someone close when they need it. The album has had an inauspicious debut but James Bay fans are certainly digging it. All of James’ previous entries on this chart have reached the Top 10, with 2018’s “Pink Lemonade” getting to #2.

Loreen, "Tattoo"

Lorine Talhaoui, the Swedish singer otherwise known as Loreen, has had a nearly 20 year career in her native country, which culminated in her winning EuroVision in 2012 with the still-vibrant “Euphoria”. Two albums and several awards later, and Loreen won Sweden’s Melodifestivalen contest again in March to represent her country at EuroVision for a second time. The song is “Tattoo”, with its wonderful taut and dramatic arrangement that showcases Loreen’s voice, and it arrives at #27.

Jay Bird, "All Night Long"

Jay Bird returns to the chart for a fourth appearance with the fun deep house party track “All Night Long”, which debuts at #29. Fans of the genre who enjoy Fisher, Hugel, John Summit or Acraze will totally dig this one. Jay Bird’s last chart entry, “Float”, peaked at #3 in early 2022.

#BILLCSNewMusicReport – March 18/23 spotlighting new songs by #TheBoyFromTheSouth @WinandWoo & @PENNYWILDmusic @Kingamuzik

I don’t have any editorials, news or wise words to share. After having the flu this week, I empathize with career writers though, as they get older, when they become sick or unmotivated, and how to get back on track after that. All I can say is “keep on keeping on”…

In addition to the posts about individual songs, you can read about my pick of the week, along with picks from online radio buddies “Big Daddy” Russ Horton and Hunter Wilbur.  “The Musicman” James Rogers has more notable 80’s pop this week with his Classic Five pop hits feature.

The BILLCS New Music Report is a work-in-progress and I welcome your suggestions so feel free to contact me @billcs on Twitter @thebillcs on Instagram or @BILLCSMusicProjects on Facebook.

REMINDER:  Be sure to click on the photos above the song titles and artists’ names to hear the songs or watch the videos.

SPOTLIGHTING

The Boy From The South, "Amazing-Man"

THE BOY FROM THE SOUTH, “Amazing-Man”

Pedro Balaña Perez may just be the European counterpart to Jason Mraz. With an indie-folk background and less than a dozen releases under his belt as The Boy From The South, including the recent, humorous single “Stereotypes”, the Barcelona talent has got a new big favourite in my book with the upbeat pop of “Amazing-Man”. The song coincides with Jason’s return to pop with “I Feel Like Dancing”, but style is where the similarity ends. “Amazing-Man” is jaunty pop with a gentle, downright appealing vocal that makes you want to find out more about this guy. Part of Pedro’s deft songwriting is using a variety of comparisons – such as even to “the bassist of Level 42” 🙂 – while still keeping “Amazing-Man” inside his happy mystique. The circus-themed video above is a winner, and my guess is that the more you play “Amazing-Man” like I did, the more you’ll want to keep hearing it, making it a unique bright spot for any playlist.

Win & Woo, PENNYWILD, "What I Got"

WIN & WOO, PENNYWILD, “What I Got”

“What I Got” is a sassy slice of techno house from Chicago dance music mainstays Win & Woo and L.A.-based multi-talent PENNYWILD. The song slips and slides in all the right directions, a bit of a welcome changeup for Nick Winholt and Austin Woo, who have been regular visitors to this blog over the years with a variety of gems like “Break Me Down”, “Here U R” and “Sleepwalking”. PENNYWILD takes that edgy techno groove and runs with it with a noteworthy, attention-grabbing vocal, with her style a great fit for Win & Woo’s electronic prowess. Check out the video above, directed by PENNYWILD, which is well-choreographed and has some throwback Britney Spears vibes.

KINGA, "Something's Gotta Give"

KINGA, “Something’s Gotta Give”

Toronto-based pop/dance singer Kinga follows up his return to the performing side of the biz with last year’s re-take on “Sexy Boy” with the bright and effervescent “Something’s Gotta Give”. The song does a great job of distracting you away from your daily toils thanks to Kinga’s playful vocal, which drives a rhythm fueled by some high end synth work. The 80’s pop flavour, which recalls songs by the likes of George Michael/Wham!, Thompson Twins, Information Society, Berlin and other prominent names of that decade, gives an added bounce and dimension to a fine song. “Something’s Gotta Give” is brisk fun and a real pick-me-up.

FEATURING

Haleine & Elephante, "Hollow"

HALEINE, ELEPHANTE, “Hollow”

“Hollow” is an interesting meeting place for two electronic artists who have largely had different directions. Haleine (Cape Code-born Kelly Sweet) has spent most of the last decade as both a solo vocalist (last year’s album, Heavenly) and collaborator in the progressive and trance genres, working with notable producers like Seven Lions, Andrew Rayel, William Black, Aly & Fila, and Gareth Emery. In the same time frame, Elephante (L.A.-based Tim Wu) has released two solo albums and an EP, whose songs veer often to pop/dance with some experimentalism, also collaborating with such vocalists as Mako, Anjulie, Nevve, and Brandyn Burnette. So “Hollow” is both a co-write and co-production along with Canadian Matthew Steeper that veers in the direction that Illenium and Odesza have helped set for edgier electronic pop. It’s a beautifully arranged and sung feast for the emotions, and meant to be played at festivals or stadiums, featuring some future bass elements that don’t go over the top. “Hollow” is a welcome partnership for Haleine and Elephante that should be repeated.

Tyler Garrett, "Slowly Drowning"

TYLER GARRETT, “Slowly Drowning”

L.A.-based singer/songwriter Tyler Garrett’s latest single, “Slowly Drowning”, is progressive electronic pop that tackles subjects like mutual trust and making the right decisions. Surrounded by an inventive production starting off with off-kilter-sounding synths that set the stage for an uncharacteristic story where love is the ultimate solution, “Slowly Drowning” builds with Tyler’s urgently expressive vocal which culminates with the plea in a relationship at a stasis, “can we both survive?”. “Slowly Drowning” is a busy, topical song that suits the darker side of electronic pop.

Mr! Mouray, "Pretty In Ink"

MR! MOURAY, “Pretty In Ink”

If you think “Pretty In Ink” bears resemblance to its similarly titled 80’s new wave track “Pretty In Pink” by The Psychedelic Furs, it ends at the nicely busy guitar work. “Pretty In Ink” is a more whimsical, melodic song in the vein of fellow Canadians Sloan or The Northern Pikes by Toronto quartet Mr! Mouray. Like previous single “Cats Can’t Fly”, “Pretty In Ink” comes from their album full of similarly amusing titles, “What’s The Stouray?”. While not as immediately catchy as “Cats Can’t Fly”, “Pretty In Ink” features good vocals by Simon Bedford-James and focuses on what the band of veterans does best – no nonsense pop/rock showcasing a myriad of influences.

“The Musicman” James Rogers is the owner and host of The 3D Variety Show heard Tuesdays on Planet Radio Canada. The Classic Five is “pop music 101” of the post-Beatles era – classics you need to know! Each title is linked to a Spotify stream of the song.

#BILLCSNewMusicReport – March 8/23 spotlighting new songs by @Jason_Mraz @Audien x @Codekomusic x @JTRoachmusic @TylerLorettee @Nikomakesbeats & @MAYLYN_music

I don’t have any editorial or observations to share in this new edition of the Report. I am trying something a little different with my layout, returning to a strategy I used in the early days of this blog. I’ve noticed that my blog page is difficult to load on my phone, so it must be difficult for you as well. I think this is because I use numerous video links which are then embedded into the post. So instead, I’m going to embed the video link in the artwork for the song or the artist, which hopefully will allow the blog page to load faster and smoothly.  So you now have to click on the photos above the artist and song title to hear the song or watch the video. Let me know how it works for you!

In addition to the posts about individual songs, you can read about my pick of the week, along with picks from online radio buddies “Big Daddy” Russ Horton and Hunter Wilbur.  “The Musicman” James Rogers focuses on 80’s pop this week with his Classic Five pop hits feature.

SPOTLIGHTING

JASON MRAZ, “I Feel Like Dancing”

Sometimes returning to a sound that put you on a map can be a really good thing. I adore Jason Mraz’s first two albums Waiting For My Rocket To Come and Mr. A-Z, in which he found a way with some good humour and whimsy, which also translated well into the concert performances I saw. His first hit, “The Remedy (I Won’t Worry)” was my #1 song of 2003 and a theme song for me for that part of my life. 20 years later, we now have “I Feel Like Dancing”, and you are encouraged to dance along with Jason. Who can possibly resist that hip hop flavoured bass and Jason’s return to astute “Wordplay”, to quote the title of another one of my favourites by him. Like in 2003, this is feel-good, jaunty pop that stands out, but now it’s by a seasoned, twice Grammy-winning performer who has always taken stylistic risks. Mr. A-Z is back and we’re delighted to have him.

AUDIEN, CODEKO, J.T. ROACH, “Antidote”

Even though it doesn’t have anything new to say lyrically, “Antidote” gives you all the feels you’re looking for, thanks to the great reteaming of Grammy nominated producer Audien with UK producer Codeko. It follows up Audien’s huge dance radio hit with UK singer/songwriter Joe Jury, “Drifting Away”. The music is in “Antidote” is all about the early 2010’s, with J.T. Roach’s memorable vocal helping to transport you to some of the best years of electronic dance music. But it’s the refined work of Audien and Codeko which makes “Antidote” a seamless example of fine contemporary record-making.

TYLER LORETTE, “Shattered”

Tyler Lorette is a 19 year old singer/songwriter from Courtice, Ontario, just east of my city, Toronto, who has been dabbling with a pop/country sound over the past few years. His powerful new single, “Shattered”, could easily be his breakout, and was brought to my attention by Hunter Wilbur as a recent “bop of the week” in previous edition of the BILLCS New Music Report. Like songs on Conan Gray’s recent Superache album, Tyler grapples anxiously with heartbreak in “Shattered”, but a graceful arrangement offsets the anguish in the lyrics. I wasn’t sure initially if the almost-acoustic backdrop worked, but after multiple listens, it would be hard to hear it with more production.

NIKO THE KID, MAYLYN, “Only One”

It’s been a while since I’ve written about music by Atlanta-born Niko The Kid, who has since released many songs for an assortment of dance labels, after creating countless remixes for the likes of Kelly Clarkson, Miley Cyrus and Ariana Grande, and collaborating on songs by artists like Odesza. “Only One” may need a listen or two, but you’ll find it has just the right amount of spit and polish, with impressive  synths that will zing you in the middle of a club set.  Go-to Nashville-based dance music singer/songwriter MAYLYN has a voice with the power and conviction to help the song stand out even more. Be sure not to let “Only One” slip by.

FEATURING

KACEY FIFIELD, “Selfish”

“Selfish” is a thoughtful ballad that pushes the envelope stylistically for L.A.’s 18 year old Kacey Fifield, following up her debut electronic pop album from last year, Between The Lines. It’s a bold song where she confronts a partner of a past relationship. She doesn’t mince words, with advice beyond her years for those in her age group, though the effect for the listener is cultivated with a beautiful, often delicate melody courtesy of long-time collaborator and producer Robbie Rosen. Kacey Fifield is carving out her own lane with softer, electronic pop music that often has an edge, and young listeners especially should pay attention.

KAPUCHON, “Education”

Afrojack is keeping awfully busy these days, and that also means giving his side project, Kapuchon, some air time. “Education” is a downright catchy instrumental that holds its own for almost five minutes. It’s bound to get some play at festivals where its unique synth work will go over well with the crowds, who are always looking for different vibes to set them off. Its snappy rhythm is hard to resist, and electronic music fans who love instrumentals will find the most favour with “Education”.

The 004, "Home"

THE 004, “Home”

The 004 is a Dutch pop trio of Mike, Kelly and Janet, who have actually sung together for 20 years, but have only recently started releasing music. “Home” is their second single and is like a warm hug that will make you smile at the end, even though the song is about the loss of a loved one. The singers’ rich tones and pleasant harmonies go a long way. While “Home” is just lovely, better production could take everything to another level, as you can only go so far on basic, acoustic arrangements. But I’m hopeful that this can occur so that The 004 can receive more attention outside of The Netherlands.

Tommy Newport, "Fate"

TOMMY NEWPORT, “Fate”

UK-born, US-raised Tommy Newport returns with his first full length album in five years called Glasshead, which includes previous single “Tongue and Cheek” as well as the melodic new track, “Fate”. While “Fate” doesn’t tell us anything new, part of the appeal of Tommy’s music is its low-fi, psychedelic pop sound, which gives it fanciful authenticity and looks back to the 1960’s as an influential. And that compliments his vocal too, which allows you to easily tune in to what he’s singing about. In April, Tommy will be touring the west coast on selected dates, and you can learn more about them right here.

Nikolas IV, "Cut Me Out"

NIKOLAS IV, “Cut Me Out”

Nikolas IV is an enigmatic new name in the alt.pop world and his brutally honest “Cut Me Out” is a great start. The L.A.-based singer-songwriter gets great help with production by none other than Frankmusik, and “Cut Me Out” is co-written with Grammy-nominated songwriter Jesse Saint James, best known for co-writing Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts”, but who has also written songs for Britney Spears, Kim Petras, Lauv, and many others. The lyrics are full of regret, but what Nikolas is singing about is clearly in the past, so time and reflection has softened the initial pain. A lot of folks will relate to “Cut Me Out”, so Nikolas IV is another new name to add to your watch list.

LORD and D'Amico & Valax, "Power"

LØRD, D’AMICO & VALAX,  “Power”

“Power” is engaging europop-flavoured tech house by rising producers who all hail from Italy, newcomer LØRD (aka Luis Rodriguez) and the duo D’Amico and Valax, which follows up their recent release “Shine”. The heart of the song is an uplifting, Gospel-flavoured chorus that would easily lift a club set midway. The rest of “Power” is carried by a driving, tech house rhythm and some busy, ear-catching synth work which makes it distinct. Although over 3 minutes long, the song comes and goes quickly, so enjoy the ride.

Francesca Louise, "The Sea"

FRANCESCA LOUISE, “The Sea”

“The Sea” is the kind of soft, serene release that requires your undivided attention. That seems to be a goal of fresh-voiced British singer/songwriter Francesca Louise, who was a contestant on The Voice UK last year. And Francesca has the vocal prowess to do it – you may recall her tribute to a lost loved one last year called “For Michael”. “The Sea” is an ode to the city of Rome, drawn from her personal experiences developing friendships and loving relationships there. This sweet song is accentuated by understated strings and acoustic guitar work, but it’s Francesca’s committed, lovely tone that is the star. Pick your quiet moment to enjoy everything that “The Sea” offers.

33 Black, "Edge Of The Knife"

33 BLACK, “Edge of the Knife”

33 Black is the northern California-based duo of  Travis Rigsbee and Jed Sprague who are intent on crowd-pleasing with their new album Out Of The Clouds, which contains 16 tracks and has uniquely been funded by the band’s fans! These guys know what they’re doing in the studio, and though some of their songs contain too many country elements for my tastes, the majority of them are rockers influenced by the best groups of the 90’s, such as Collective Soul, Counting Crows and Third Eye Blind. “Edge of the Knife” is a fun rocker that comes out of the gate with guitars blazing and a jaunty rhythm. The melody is really strong and the hand claps help turn it into a song that would win over a small club audience in concert.

#BILLCSTop30 #659 – February 13/23

All of a sudden, there is a spate of really good songs out there, which is making it difficult for me every two weeks to add new songs to my chart!  Just so that you all know, besides my Top 30, I have a personal playlist in my iTunes that contains more than double those songs – yes I still buy mp3’s too 🙂 Every week, I shortlist songs for the BILLCS New Music Report on Wednesdays mainly using a private Spotify playlist, and the songs that get added to my iTunes playlist are in the running for the BILLCS Top 30 – the best of the best. And I’m always listening for songs that grab me on first listen. It’s a strategy I’ve used for years with some modifications along the way. So hopefully that gives you some insight into how the blog comes to be and what a rabid music fan that I still am.

I’m pleased to announce my latest online radio segment that has in fact been airing since November called My Retro Pick of the Week! It’s featured on “Big Daddy” Russ Horton’s massive Top 40 Timeline show at the top of the second hour, and currently airs on Saturdays on a variety of online radio stations including UK National Radio (Noon EST), Halton Hills Radio Online (4 PM EST), FM 108 (6 PM EST), and Radio GTA (Midnight EST)! The segment tells the backstory behind some of my favourite songs of the past as well as some tidbits about the artists. Some of the songs I’ve featured so far have included “Wicked Game” by Chris Isaak, “River Deep-Mountain High” by Ike & Tina Turner, “Love Hangover” by Diana Ross, “The Letter” by The Box Tops, “(I Just) Died In Your Arms” by Cutting Crew, “Endless Sleep” by Jody Reynolds, and “Reach Out, I’ll Be There” by The 4 Tops!! I may put the segments online for you to hear in the future.

The best places to communicate with me continue to be Twitter @billcs or Instagram @thebillcs or Facebook @BILLCSMusicProjects. Follow this blog using the “Follow” button at the bottom of the home page.

Check out my ONLINE RADIO SHOWS below too as they are increasingly tied in with this blog.

While JVKE’s former #1 and Billboard Top 10 hit “Golden Hour” slides to #4 in its 10th and final appearance (20 weeks) on the chart, this fresh new talent is back on top, this time with Martin Garrix with their collaboration “Hero”. In an interesting coincidence, Martin’s first two songs to reach my chart, “Animals” and “Proxy” were both #1 in 2014. They, along with other talents like Daniel Bedingfield, Sam Smith, Rufus Wainwright and Matthew Koma have all achieved this feat. “Hero” has plenty of competition so let’s see how long it can hold fort at the top!

Trying to close the gap again in the coming weeks is “Black Mascara”, the haunting song by Greyson Chance from his album Palladium, which rises 5-2, becoming his third song to reach the runner-up spot, after “Dancing Next To Me” and “My Dying Spirit”, which just departed the chart after 9 appearances (18 weeks).

I always root for a good underdog, and “Ghost Boy” by L.A.-based singer/songwriter Zac Poor is just that.  It moves up 7-5, and please check out the thoughtful video above, and don’t be surprised if you shed a few tears.

Also new to the Top 10 are former national Dance Radio #1 “Spiral” by NYC’s Lena Leon (11-8, above), and “Wish On An Eyelash Pt. 2” by Australia’s Mallrat in collaboration with The Chainsmokers (12-9, below). It’s The Chainsmokers’ 12th time in the Top 10!!

The Fastest Riser on the chart is “Lose You” (above) by the dynamic team of Afrojack and James Arthur, which soars 22-15. And good news for James Arthur fans. Despite him never before appearing on my chart, his collaboration with Brazil’s Alok is also the Highest Debut at #27 called “Work With My Love” (below). Both feature compelling vocals by James, and to me he has a huge future in dance music if he wishes!

I was pleased to check out Famba’s live set locally last week, and we finally got to meet up after me writing about him for the last six years! His latest and techno-inspired release is a gem called “No Sleep” featuring Glasgow KI$$, which climbs 23-17.

Arriving at #28 is “Hollow” by the terrific trio of Dabin, Kai Wachi and singer/screamer Lø Spirit. Everything about this release is next level, the producers have outdone themselves and Lø Spirit is one helluva vocalist. It’s Dabin’s second appearance on the chart. He previously appeared on best bud Illenium’s “Hearts On Fire” with Lights (#5, 2021).

At #29 is one of those songs that felled me on first listen and I would say is a ‘cousin’ of Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own”. It’s “I Go Dancing” by Toronto dance producer Frank Walker featuring British sensation Ella Henderson. It’s Frank’s second appearance on the chart – his first, with Loud Luxury and Stephen Puth called “Like Gold”, went to #1 two years ago. And Stephen (aka Puth the Younger) co-produced and co-wrote “I Go Dancing” too.

Rounding out the list at #30 is “Fever Dreamer” by British producer SG Lewis and featuring Toronto singer/songwriter Charlotte Day Wilson and L.A. rapper Channel Tres. It’s a compelling listen that is heavily influenced by classic disco, with a soulful vocal by Charlotte, and the results are tantalizing. It’s culled from SG’s latest album AudioLust and Higher Love.
