BILLCS Top 30 #445 – December 1, 2014

In some ways the past month or so has plodded along, no thanks to two different bouts of viral illnesses, and then suddenly two weeks go by and it’s time for a new personal chart 🙂

The Top 10

There’s no budging Jessie Ware and Mikky Ekko from #1 and #2. “Say You Love Me” holds for a second appearance at number one as the singer is about to release “You & I (Forever)” as the follow up single and video from her amazing Tough Love album. “Smile” by Mikky Ekko preceded “Say You Love Me” at #1 and holds tight in anticipation of his debut album Time, due in January.
Last edition’s high flying debut is also this edition’s fastest riser on the chart. Color Theory (aka Brian Hazard) has concocted one of those songs to which you can relate so easily with “Headphones”. The original mix is up top for your listening pleasure, but do check out the slick Matt Mancid retro crossover remix too right here, well worth purchasing. “Headphones” glides up the chart 18-3 and will contend for #1 in the coming month.

Semi-Precious Weapons slide into #5 with “Brando”, their unconventional love song from an upcoming album. It’s gone quiet about what’s next for the band in terms of the album release but I’m certain something grand is in the works!

“The Voice” underdog from last season, Jake Barker, rises to #6 with the title song from his EP Stage Fright. Jake has many cover songs on You Tube, including his rendition of Ed Sheeran’s “Photograph”. Check it out above.

The more I listen to “Losing You” by Jane Badler (9-7), the more detail I hear each time. It’s just one of those hypnotic songs that doesn’t want to let go, from her recent album Opus.

Two dance club zingers join the Top 10. Bright Light Bright Light continues his long line of Top Tenners on this chart with “Arms Of Another” at #8, from the EP An Open Heart. Then the powerhouse trio of Sander van Doorn, Martin Garrix, and DVBBS lands at #9 with “Gold Skies”. And while the main vocal is by singer Aleesia, to me it’s the male vocal chorus that is most affecting about this song and just makes you want to jam out!

Movin’ On Up

So it appears that Sam Smith’s “Restart” was just a video release! It climbs 13-11 in a year when he has been nary off my chart (if at all) since “Money On My Mind” bowed earlier in the year. The new single is the buoyant “Like I Can”, which will take him well into 2015 and long past any Grammy Awards which will find their way to him.

Get your New Year’s playlist ready and be sure to include “Goin’ Down” by Deniz Koyu vs Twoloud, sure to make your crowd go BOOOM! It climbs 21-12.
Erasure’s “Reason” is from their latest album The Violet Flame and it has designs on the Top 10, rising 19-13.

Tristan Thompson’s “Burn Again” is receiving scorching action at radio in Canada, already #24 on the AC Airplay chart and it’s also entered the Top 40 radio chart too. Not bad for an independent release from a very talented 16 year old. Next stop: USA 🙂 “Burn Again” climbs 20-16.

We have always got “Time” till Steve Grand’s album is released in early 2015. This delightful story is off to a super start, rising 23-17.

Lorde certainly dazzled us with her kinetic performance of “Yellow Flicker Beat” (above) last week on the American Music Awards. As a result I think this song will get a second look by radio, and it moves up in this edition 24-20.
“Calling You” by Penguin Prison continues the many chart appearances here for NYC singer/songwriter/producer/DJ Chris Glover, as it rises 26-21.

Smashing Satellites gave a powerful performance opening for Moist last week in Toronto. The quartet will soon be headlining its own mid-sized club venues judging by audience response. In the meantime, “Hounds” climbs 30-25.

New to the Chart

I’ve already gushed about each of these songs in blog posts over the past few weeks, so it’s no surprise to see them chart so quickly.

Reigen’s soulful and emotional EDM ballad “Come Back With Me” is simple food for your musical soul, and debuts at #22 for the New York based singer.

It’s her first appearance on my chart in 10 years, but the unmistakable Kristine W. is back in full force with “Love Come Home”, a redux of an early UK hit for her. It makes a memorable impact, recalling her Land Of The Living days, and arrives at #23. It has also landed in the Top 5 of the Billboard Dance Club Play chart this past week, and I hope DJ’s will send it to the top. And if you buy the EP, it contains no less than 14 remixes!

While “Zeppelin” leaves the chart, Eli Lieb has perhaps gone even one better with the feel good story and vibe of “Lightning In A Bottle”, which lands at #27. And do I hear an album is forthcoming in 2015? Even more to which we can look forward!

BILLCS Top 30 #443 – November 3, 2014

After 6 weeks of having a lock on the chart, making it some of the best music weeks of the year thus far, the Top 3 songs have faltered and an influx of new songs is on the way, but that will probably still take another month or so, with the exception of one song which has its sights on #1. A list of the complete chart follows the blog post further down 🙂

The Top 10

“Smile” by Mikky Ekko gets an appearance at #1 after holding down the fort at #2 for six weeks. I’m looking forward to hearing the singer’s album Time when it surfaces – not sure of a release date now, and I’d be surprised if it wasn’t shoved back till the new year after he completes his tour with Alt-J. Ironically the singer’s collaboration with Chris Malinchak, “Stranger” (which peaked at #8) is #30 in this edition.

After killer performances in a four city North American tour – including Toronto, where I was fortunate to bear witness to her amazing voice and show – Jessie Ware’s “Say You Love Me” soars 6-2 to challenge “Smile” for #1 in two weeks. I don’t understand why “Say You Love Me” isn’t tearing up charts everywhere (it did reach the Top 25 in the UK), but there’s a dearth of beautiful songs on her album Tough Love too!
While Sam Smith’s “I’m Not The Only One” slips to #3, do not fear, fans, “Restart” is on its way up at #15!

He continues to post a lot of new music on his Soundcloud page, but for now “Thanks For Nothing” by Brandyn Burnette holds its own at #4.

Jamie Scott’s “Unbreakable” is slowly attracting friends at radio, and the song climbs this week 9-7, as his album My Hurricane will see release this month.

5 Seconds Of Summer’s memorable ballad “Amnesia” enters the Top 10, right behind the #7 peak of “She Looks So Perfect” at #8.

Oh look! Two Adam Tyler songs in the Top 10! No surprise that, I believe he’s done it before 🙂 So we have the Aron Friedman remix of “I Won’t Let You Go” at #5, and the Paul Hetherington 80’s retro-styled production of “Criminal” becomes yet another Top Tenner for Adam at #9!

Movin’ Up

Chromatone’s pop-rock-R&B flavoured song “Play For Me” continues to climb to a new peak, at #11 in this edition!
The last chart’s fastest riser, Jake Barker’s “Stage Fright”, moves up just outside the Top 10 at #12.
Semi-Precious Weapons look to follow “Aviation High” into the Top 10 with the unconventional love song “Brando”, moving up 17-13.

Actress and singer Jane Badler’s hypnotic and stylish “Losing You” makes a big move this week, rising 20-14!

The fastest riser on the chart this week can only be found within the new EP An Open Heart by Bright Light Bright Light. It’s “Arms Of Another” (musically inspired by Crystal Waters’ classic “Gypsy Woman (She’s Homeless)”, climbing 24-16.

It debuted inside the Top 50 this week on the UK Official Singles Chart so “Gold Skies” by the triple threat of Sander van Doorn, Martin Garrix and DVBBS (featuring Aleesia) is proving to be an international chart threat, and it rises 27-20 on my chart in this edition.

It took a while to reach the chart, but “Superheroes” by The Script is well on its way, rising 28-22, from their 4th album No Sound Without Silence.

Chart Newcomers

Erasure has been one of my favourite groups since I first saw their show in 1986 (!), and their latest album The Violet Flame is one of their finest, harkening back to their classic late 80’s period. They’ve only surfaced on my chart three times since 2003, but each time it’s with a personal Top Tenner: Their cover of “Solsbury Hill”, “I Could Fall In Love With You”, and “Then I Go Twisting”. Can “Reason” join this trio? It arrives at #26 as the group completes its recent four.

Arriving at #27 is the initial single from the intriguing-looking soundtrack to the latest edition of “The Hunger Games” called “Mockingjay” (Part 1). I wasn’t a fan of the first movie, but award-winning singer/songwriter Ella Yelich-O’Connor, aka Lorde, is the curator of the soundtrack (not bad for turning 18 years old this coming week!) and the alluring “Yellow Flicker Beat” debuts on the chart. Lorde’s “Royals” only got to #11 before I tired of it; perhaps “Yellow Flicker Beat” will do better!

Lastly at #28, is the second official single by British Columbia singer Tristan Thompson, “Burn Again”, which I wrote about recently. This 16 year old will be a contender in the next year, mark my words!

As many of you are already aware, after many years away from the microphone, I am now pleased to be back as a voice on D-Moos.com Canada’s National Internet Radio Station, which mainly plays a selection of oldies, mostly from the 50’s to the 90’s, with soon to be more intrusions from the 2000’s and other new music.

Do listen in for my New Music Pick of the Week feature on D-Moos.com 8 times per day starting at 2:05 AM EST on Mondays, and while the station is only live in the evenings from 9:00 pm to midnight (with my long-time musical partner in crime “The Musicman” James Rogers), you can hear my voice at other odd times, particularly if you’re an oldies loving night owl on the weekend overnights 🙂

Chart Bound: “Burn Again” by Tristan Thompson (@TristanTMusic)

TRISTAN THOMPSON, “Burn Again”

“Burn Again” is the second official single from 16 year old British Columbia native Tristan Thompson’s debut album Here For You. I’ve been championing Tristan’s music since the Spring through several blog posts. While I prefer “Tidal Wave” (which got to #1 on my personal chart) and “Mistaken” over “Burn Again”, it’s a strong but inauspicious ballad that looks to be a better fit for radio play. And it’s doing just that – Tristan’s been named as Bell Media’s future star for November, and the song is being played on over 100 radio stations across Canada including Toronto’s influential CHUM-FM. Hot off the presses is the excellent new video which tells its story through dance, and you can see that everyone in the video is very committed to the smooth choreography. I expect by the end of 2014 the rest of Canada will know who Tristan Thompson is, and then this fine young talent with a soulful voice will be on his way to an international breakout (New Zealand has already caught on!). Put Tristan about halfway stylistically between Shawn Desman and Shawn Mendes 🙂 Watch the video above and be sure to pick up Here For You on iTunes.

BILLCS Top 30 – #440 – September 22, 2014

Suddenly we move into Fall, and the entire landscape at the top of my chart is changing. Not unexpectedly, the high energy dance experience that we enjoyed for most of the year is shifting to quieter music with top notch vocal power and three songs that will rule the top of my chart for the next while.

The Top 10

The hint from two weeks ago proved to be true. Sam Smith acquires his 4th number one song of the year on my personal chart with “I’m Not The Only One”, moving up 4-1. This is one song that’s grown immeasurably on me from In The Lonely Hour since it was first release. It’s in fine contention to be one of the top songs of 2014, along with “Stay With Me”, “Money On My Mind”, and “Latch”. The relentless worldwide touring must be taking its toll – Sam had to cancel his Toronto stop on his tour.

The fastest riser is right behind, and it’s “Smile” by Mikky Ekko, bounding 17-2, certain to be #1 whenever “I’m Not The Only One” concedes. The singer is touring with Alt-J, which is already seeing sold out shows across the country, including the Toronto stop on November 11.

Harriet’s rich vocal tones send “Afterglow” from 6 to 3. It’s from her fine 3 song EP What’s Mine Is Yours, containing the solid pop song of the same name, plus a cover of Judie Tzuke’s “If (When You Go)”, and they’re all grandly produced by Steve Anderson.

“This Could Be Something” by Anton Ewald & Medina is proving to be enduring, slipping 2-4, just can’t get the ‘oooh oooh’s’ out of my head yet!
Davis Redfield & Carl Man’s “Music Gods” moves up 9-7, ever so eyeing the Top 50 in two weeks amid fierce competition.

It’s Mikky Ekko again at #8, this time as featured voice on Chris Malinchak’s funky club song “Stranger”, rising 11-8.

“Get To Know You” by Corey Niles & Ish is picking up in radio airplay across Canada! The infectious and tightly produced song climbs 12-9.

From the forthcoming album The Couch Surfing Chronicles, Brandyn Burnette’s “Thanks For Nothing” moves 15-10. Brandyn’s one well-grounded old soul kind of guy and his tweets are well worth your perusal! He plays in L.A on Monday September 22 at the Hotel Cafe. Take a look at his “Life’s A Beach” video below – it will make you smile!

On The Way Up

The remix of Adam Tyler’s 2011 single “I Won’t Let You Go” in an Aron Friedman remix is once again on its way to the Top 10, where it previously peaked at #5. Also climbing is the Paul Hetherington-produced “Criminal”, up 23-18. You can preview a new single featuring Adam further down below 🙂

The positive folk/pop of Knoxville, TN based singer Lyonn (aka Tyler Gelrud) continues to flourish as “Just Say Hello” climbs 20-15.

Soon to make an international breakthrough is Graffiti6 singer Jamie Scott with his latest single “Unbreakable”, from his upcoming album My Hurricane. The song jumps 24-16. Watch the new heart-stirring video above.

Slick R&B/pop from Chromatone, with a winning video full of great dancing and choreography, comes in the form of “Play For Me”, which rises 26-21.

Premiering

Like many others, I can’t wait till the release of Jessie Ware’s Tough Love album as well as the UK singer’s North American tour, which brings her to Toronto on October 26 (and I’m going YAY). In the meantime, “Say You Love Me” and its quiet power makes a splash on the chart at #20. Jessie’s only previous appearance on my chart was on a reissue of Miguel’s “Adorn”, which got to #1 last Fall. The Tough Love album also features a 70’s R&B flavoured Miguel composition “Kind Of…Sometimes…Maybe”, which you can hear below.

As his former #1 “Tidal Wave” is about to depart the chart after a maximum 10 appearances (20 weeks), the latest from 16 year old Tristan Thompson arrives on the chart at #22. Watch the video for “Mistaken” below.

Lastly, it’s a great reason to fall in love with a song you enjoyed the first time around. Penguin Prison has put a disco spin on his cover of Sade’s first single “Hang On To Your Love”. It’s available to you as a free download in anticipation of PP’s sophomore album, and bows on the chart at #25. PP has a great track record on my chart – “Hang On” is his 7th entry, plus he’s been featured on one other Top 5 song (RAC’s “Hollywood”) and remixed four songs (by Jamiroquai, The Temper Trap’s #1 “Resurrection”, Ghost Beach, and Lana Del Rey).

Hit In The Making: “Mistaken” by Tristan Thompson (@TristanTmusic)

TRISTAN THOMPSON, “Mistaken”

Hot on the Canada-wide vibe caused by his debut single “Tidal Wave”, which has received national (and New Zealand!) airplay as well as TV exposure for the British Columbian singer, comes a new video for “Mistaken”, from Tristan Thompson’s album Here For You. This time Tristan’s singing a story as the knowing voice of regret at the young age of 16, as set to an 80s inspired synth pop melody, and the song’s earworm of a chorus will have you humming “Mistaken” for days. Plus there are some good performance scenes with a cool vehicle 🙂 The bonus with Tristan having such a great voice at his age is that all of his songs come across as convincing and mature, making his music open for a wider audience than your average teenage pop star. If you’re in western Canada, look for Tristan as part of the TeenFest tour, and who knows maybe it will head eastward to the rest of the country. Be sure to support this fine talent and pick up any of his songs on iTunes for 99 cents each or buy the entire Here For You album (and you can read my blog post about it here). “Mistaken” is a fine candidate for international radio play, and could also do well in clubs with remixes.

BILLCS Top 30 #437 – August 11, 2014

The vacation season is almost as busy as being at work, though with Robin Williams’ passing last night it didn’t seem appropriate to post anything amid the sadness.

But on we go, to a new personal chart with six new contenders premiering, four of which I’ve already written about!

The Top 10

My Top 2 songs stay the same. House Rockerz/Davis Redfield/Carl Man continue to light up the chart with “Electrify The Night” at #1, while former #1 Tristan Thompson hangs at #2 with “Tidal Wave”. Tristan’s coming to Toronto for a benefit performance in a few weeks so I’ll keep you posted on that!

Eyeing the top spot for two weeks from now is the brilliant pairing of Sweden’s Anton Ewald with Denmark’s Medina on “This Could Be Something”, from Anton’s EP On My Way. There’s truly international potential for this one, hopefully it can still break out of the Nordic countries!
New to the Top 5 at #5 is Finland’s Hannis with her europop/dubstep beauty, “Time Has Come”, one of the most different and alluring songs of 2014.

Charli XCX’s “Boom Clap” from “The Fault In Our Stars” appears to be headed for #1 in many places around the world and will become one of 2014’s defining pop songs. It climbs to #7 this week. It might be the best song Roxette never wrote! *Hums “Joyride*
The fastest riser once again on the chart is no stranger to that accolade, Bright Light Bright Light, with “I Believe” from his new album Life Is Easy, climbing 16-8. “An Open Heart”, which got to #1 earlier in the year on my chart through its appearance on the In Your Care EP, will be the next official single release from the album. Woooohoooo!

I’m so torn between two or three other songs from the Deluxe Edition of Shattered Ice that another Adam Tyler song will have to wait for two more weeks to appear on the chart. In the meantime, leading the way is the single “Knew You Better” – love all of the Madonna-ish French dialogue – rising 13-9.

Right behind, after releasing his Deluxe Edition of The Stories That Occurred last week on iTunes, is Sam Dickinson, receiving his second Top 10 placing on this chart with “When You Left Me”, moving up 14-10.

Movin’ On Up

A bit of a log jam happening for some fine songs, with a couple of last chart’s debuts making headway and looking to climb more in the next few weeks!

“Ten Feet Tall”, the affecting collaboration by Afrojack and Wrabel, climbs 20-13 – does anyone else think the melody sounds a bit like Marc Cohn’s “Walking In Memphis” at times?

Despite its title, “No Fun” by The Presets is indeed a fun, funky, grooving ride, full of great effects and a fine vocal. It rises 21-14.

Zorro Blakk’s second chart entry, the bouncy “Big City Girls (Don’t Fall In Love With Small Town Boys)”, continues to move up after “Good News (For People Who Love Bad News)” peaked at #7 on the last chart. “Big City Girls” jumps 18-15.
Look for “Stranger” by Chris Malinchak featuring Mikky Ekko (22-18), “Music Gods” by Davis Redfield featuring Carl Man (23-19), and “Love In The 21st Century” by Neon Trees (25-20) to break out more in two weeks.

A Half Dozen New Arrivals

Sam Smith’s “I’m Not The Only One” debuts at #22. It wasn’t what I expected as a follow up single to “Stay With Me” but it could do as well on the charts. It’s also accompanied by a terrific and sometimes hard-to-watch video featuring “Glee”‘s Dianna Agron. Give it a watch at the top of the post.
Corey Niles has his second chart entry with a rollicking slice of hip hop/pop, “Get To Know You”, featuring fellow Toronto rapper Ish. It bows at #25.

It’s all about the hook and Brandyn Burnette knows how to write ’em. It takes a couple of listens but “Thanks For Nothing” is a no-brainer winner. It arrives at #26.

Remember those times spent with friends and rocking out to your favourite performers? Eli Lieb makes it an emotional memory fest with “Zeppelin” at #27.

Talented Knoxville TN-based newcomer Lyonn arrives with “Just Say Hello” at #28 from his EP Promenade. Huge thumbs up for the adorable and sincere accompanying video.

All of a sudden 5SOS are one of the biggest bands in the world. The Aussie quartet lands on the chart for a second time as “She Looks So Perfect” exits with the pretty pop/rock ballad “Amnesia” at #29.

First Class: “Here For You”, the Debut Album by Tristan Thompson (@TristanTMusic)

TRISTAN THOMPSON, Here For You

Here For You is the debut album (yes that’s the CD of it above) by 16 year old British Columbia native Tristan Thompson, whose first single “Tidal Wave” has scored #1 on my latest personal chart, and is a first class effort that distances itself from the run of the mill teen pop of the day. All of the songs were written or co-written by Tylor Johnson, and they aren’t predetermined for a particular age group, allowing Tristan to provide more classic pop kind of interpretations. And besides “Tidal Wave”, there are at least two other golden radio-worthy songs for your attention.

“Mistaken” is the opening song and should be the successor to “Tidal Wave” with a zinger of a hook and a really good story to boot. Like other songs on Here For You, “Lifetime Guarantee” slows things down a bit, again a strong song perfectly suited for Tristan’s voice. “Leaving You Behind” is another uptempo number, while other songs like “Siren” help mix up the set with variety. Here For You is a great showcase that lets Tristan’s vocal influences show their true colours, from Michael Jackson to Backstreet Boys to Jesse McCartney. So – it’s about as far away from Bieber and Cyrus and Gomez and others that you can get! Truly it’s an album that will appeal to all ages.

Tristan Thompson has a bright future ahead and I think Here For You, with top notch production by Adam Tune, will have long legs to take him into next year and beyond.

BILLCS Top 30 #435 – July 14/14

The new chart has four debuts and the Top 10 is all shaken and stirred…

The New #1

He did it! It’s not easy to trounce Sam Smith from his 7th week at #1 this year (albeit with three songs), but 16 year old British Columbian Tristan Thompson has done just that. The 70’s through 2000’s retro appeal of “Tidal Wave”, plus the fact that young Tristan has already got a great voice, have it leading the pack, at least for the next two weeks, because there’s a bit of a dance club storm brewing underneath. I’ll have my thoughts on Tristan’s full album Here For You in the week, in the mean time check out his video for “Tidal Wave” above 🙂

The Rest of the Top 5… Changing Places

The rest of the Top 5 is the same as two weeks ago, but all of the songs have changed places. Imminent challengers for #1 are “Electrify The Night”, the hard-to-find Europop gem from House Rockerz, Davis Redfield and vocalist Carl Man, which plugs into #2, and Jason Walker & Bimbo Jones’ brillo Hi-NRG-inspired take on Taylor Dayne’s “Tell It To My Heart” at #3. Sam Smith slides to #4 with “Stay With Me” while Martin Garrix’s “Proxy” slowly tumbles to #5.

New To The Top 10

That whirling dervish of a remix by Steve Smart & Westfunk of Little Mix’s “Little Me” soars to #6, while Andy Grammer’s “Back Home” (below) continues to find new fans and could take the song through the entire summer, and it’s up to #10. There’s also a chart debut in the Top 10…

Shakin’ Up The Chart

Is it everywhere yet? “Boom Clap” by Charli XCX vaults up the chart 18-11.
Those 4 Kongos lads make a great case for infectious rock songs on their album Lunatic. “Hey I Don’t Know” climbs 15-12.
It’s following a bit of a pattern set by Martin Garrix and Convulsic already, but Finnish singer Hannis has a strange gem of a Europop/Dubstep single with “Time Has Come” charging up the chart as the fastest riser, 23-13! I’d LOVE dance clubs to make this one their own!!

“Miracle” by the UK’s E-Mute is not slowing down as this memorable slice of alt.rock moves up 17-14.
Last week’s new entries, “Knew You Better” by Adam Tyler and Sam Dickinson’s “When You Left Me” both make impressive gains, rising 25-18 and 27-19 respectively!

Chart Debuts

Could Anton Ewald outdo last year’s “Begging” (#2) and “Can’t Hold Back” (#3)? The talented young Swedish singer met his match with Danish star Medina, and all parties connected and co-write and recorded “This Could Be Something” from Anton’s new EP On My Way. All I can say is that Katy Perry would probably kill for this song! It’s a strong and summery pure pop record with an engaging video that bows on this chart at #9!!

Yes, it’s time for another Bright Light Bright Light song on the chart! Rod Thomas has just released his sophomore album Life Is Easy, which has debuted well on the UK charts, and from it is the follow-up single to his Elton John duet “I Wish We Were Leaving”, but like “Love Part II” from his first album it’s a smashing and breathtakingly upbeat take on the power of love. “I Believe” starts out at #27.

Why look, it’s Davis Redfield and Carl Man, together again (along with some of , if not all of, those same spot-on songwriters)! Actually I wrote about “Music Gods” a while back but like any good song, you keep coming back to it. Besides, I’ve always liked the Music Gods myself 😀 “Music Gods” arrives at #28.

More Neon Trees? Yes please, especially after their engaging July 3 concert here in Toronto (and yes, Tyler did crowd surf us 😀 )! I’m not sure if it will be the next official single or not, but “Love In The 21st Century” joins “Teenager In Love” (#17) on this chart at #29.

As many of you are already aware, after many years away from the microphone, I am now pleased to be back as a voice on http://www.d-moos.com Canada’s National Internet Radio Station, which mainly plays a selection of oldies, mostly from the 50’s to the 90’s, with soon to be more intrusions from the 2000’s and other new music.

I was asked to do a pre-recorded weekly New Music Pick of The Week, and a number of the songs on this chart – specifically those by Tristan Thompson, Adam Tyler, Zorro Blakk & Deniz Olivieri, Sam Dickinson, and Anton Ewald – have all recently graced the station, every three hours for a week beginning Mondays at 2:05 a.m. EST.

Do listen in for the Pick of the Week on D-Moos.com, and while the station is only live in the evenings from 9:00 pm to midnight (with my long-time musical partner in crime “The Musicman” James Rogers), you can hear my voice at other odd times, particularly if you’re an oldies loving night owl on the weekend overnights 🙂

BILLCS Top 30 #434 – June 30/14

The end of June edition of my personal chart sees plenty of upward movement and four debuts, so I’ll be focusing on those this time. Plus I have three winning chart ‘extras’!

THE TOP 10 DANCES UP A STORM

Well perhaps except for the songs by the performer of our #1 and #6 songs…

Sam Smith is entrenched at #1 for a third appearance with “Stay With Me”, which will go down as a classic for which 2014 will be remembered. Sam’s also at #6 with the beautiful “Not In That Way”. Sam’s album In The Lonely Hour is thoroughly enjoyable, though I had already heard most of it anyway, and it’s not entirely a sad song affair, though that does seem to be his specialty 🙂
New Canadian boy wonder Tristan Thompson is poised to steal away #1 from Sam Smith in two weeks with “Tidal Wave”. A great new voice plus a classic melody and infectious arrangement makes “Tidal Wave” an easy sell.

Jason Walker’s rendition of “Tell It To My Heart” (up top) moves up 10-4 and is just one of those records that smacks you in the face and changes your mood for the better, every time. I absolutely adore it! And whatta voice 🙂
Carl Man is a voice to get to know better on his collaboration with House Rockerz and Davis Redfield, “Electrify The Night”, which soars 12-5. And it’s a great song all ways around too!

Convulsic’s crazy pop-inflected one-of-a-kind dubstep of “The Day You Left” climbs 9-7!

Attention, attention! DVBBS & MOTi have arrived in the Top 10 with EDM that commands your attention, “This Is Dirty”, up 11-9.

Mr. Zorro Blakk (aka Daniel Volpe) also lands in the Top 10 with the pop-culturiffic “Good News (For People Who Love Bad News)”, climbing 15-10, and features a nice blend of voices with singer Deniz Olivieri. More on El Zorro later!

UP, UP AND AWAY

Stuck. In. My. Head. That’s a very good reason for it to be the fastest riser, blazing up the chart 23-11. It’s the Steve Smart and Westfunk radio edit of “Little Me” by Little Mix!

While radio is still giving attention to “Come With Me Now”, my preferred song by Kongos at this time is the bass-laden, playful “Hey I Don’t Know”, which moves up 19-15.

“Miracle” by E-Mute is no unassuming song, no sirree. It keeps building and building, carried by Theo Mak’s riveting vocal and a classical piano melody that sticks in memory long after the song ends. “Miracle” rises 20-17.

“The Fault In Our Stars” is a huge hit with the teen crowd, and it’s no surprise that Charli XCX’s “Boom Clap” is about to be a defining song of summer. It climbs 24-18.

DEM DEBUTS

I’ve already wrote about the four debuts in one form or another…

One of the most impressive songs I’ve heard in a while is the hybrid of Europop and dubstep in “Time Will Come” by new Finnish singer Hannis. It bows at a high #23!

As the deluxe edition of Adam Tyler’s Shattered Ice continues to resonate with me, the first single from the album premieres at #25, just as the long lasting “Electric Valentine” (also on the album, and Adam’s highest charting song to date, peaking at #3) is about to exit the chart. “Knew You Better” is another Adam Tyler song about to make its mark on my chart 🙂

This one just makes you want to dance! It’s the second entry by Zorro Blakk, taking lessons from hits by Fall Out Boy and Panic At The Disco with his penchant for long song titles! “Big City Girls (Don’t Fall In Love With Small Town Boys)” will leave you equally breathless while you’re dancing, and it lands on the chart at #26.

Sam Dickinson’s debut album The Stories That Occurred is about to get a 37 song reboot, and the first single is an excellent choice that grabs you right from its guitar opening, carried by Sam’s potent voice. “When You Left Me” debuts at #27. Sam’s “Learn To Wait” reached #8 on my chart last Fall. “When You Left Me” gets its official single release on July 7!

EXTRA! EXTRA! EXTRA!

WRATHSCHILD, “Angeles”

As “Fall Into Love” is about to leave the chart after peaking at #8, the duo of Simon Curtis and Wolfy released their second single together today, “Angeles”. It couldn’t be a more different affair than “Fall Into Love”, but showcases the power of the pair. “Angeles” has this beautiful, wistful melody, where you can picture a late night camp fire on an L.A. beach. But the lyrics are bittersweet, arriving in L.A. with stars in your eyes only to find that the city is remote and disenchanting when all is said and done. “Angeles” is a pleasing, personalized distraction, and will fit in nicely with this year’s end of summer songs.

ANTON EWALD featuring MEDINA, “This Could Be Something”

“This Could Be Something” is part of 20 year old Swedish singer/dancer/choreographer Anton Ewald’s latest fine EP On My Way, and it’s a danceable pop outing that definitely has designs on radio worldwide, and it could get there. The talented singer duets with Danish singer Medina, and their combined forces really give an edge to the song’s chorus. A song full of ‘ooh oohs’ and ‘oh ohs’ might not seem so favourable but for the enthusiasm of these two talents. Katy Perry watch out, “This Could Be Something” could definitely be just that!

JAKE BARKER, “Stage Fright”

I was really pleased when Jake Barker was added to “The Voice” tour, even though he didn’t finish in the Top 10. His talent and personality are unmistakeable. The title song from his independently released EP is an up close recounting of that thing singers dread, whether on stage or about a relationship, and the cure is having his girl by his side. Remember, Jake had never performed in concert before appearing on “The Voice” – and you’d never know it from the confidence he displays on stage. The EP doesn’t mince any words, and Jake’s soothing R&B-influenced style makes it both romantic and easy to take in many doses. You can hear an excerpt of the song only on iTunes.

BILLCS Top 30 #433 – June 16/14

My new personal chart this week sees some longer lasting songs peaking with no shortage of great new songs to replace them down below. So while it’s an active chart, movement is slow and steady 😉

The Top 10

Tuesday June 17 is release day for Sam Smith’s In The Lonely Hour in North America at last!! So I’ve picked that up and will be listening, but in the meantime Sam’s “Stay With Me” gets a second appearance in at the top, while “Not In That Way” climbs to #8.
It’s looking highly like young B.C. native Tristan Thompson could succeed Sam Smith at the top in two weeks with his debut single “Tidal Wave” (below). It moves up significantly, from 5 to 2! I’ve also included a link to the new Boomtang mix radio edit!

Convulsic now has two of his songs in the Top 10, which is amazing for a new performer. “Love Space” still climbs up to #5, while “The Day You Left” enters the Top 10 at #9. Unique and infectious dubstep just waiting for your attention!
FrankMusik’s “Dear Nicole” rises to #6, as the third video from By Nicole is released. Watch “Stabilizher” below – such a well shot video, full of great colour and effects. Plus, it’s a feelgood video, harkening back to “No I.D” or “Do It In The A.M.” Well done to all!

Bounding into the Top 10 at full velocity is the massive cover of Taylor Dayne’s “Tell It To My Heart” by Jason Walker featuring Bimbo Jones. If you want a song to lift you up and make you feel great, Jason’s fierce rendition will do just that!! Below is a video re-edit featuring the Toy Armada and DJ GRIND club mix.

Moving On Up…

They’re from the nearby town to the north-west of me called Orangeville – the DVBBS brothers (with MOTi) are Top 10 bound with the powerful and rollicking “This Is Dirty” at #11.

“Electrify The Night” by the team of House Rockerz, Davis Redfield and singer Carl Man is a song that resonated with me out of the blue. It only has limited availability, but you can listen to it through the link below from Soundcloud. I predict great things coming for the song on the chart in the next few weeks, and it moves 16-12.

The pop culture references and the feel good vibe make Zorro Blakk & Deniz Olivieri’s “Good News (For People Who Love Bad News)” a treat for your ears and feet! The song is from the mysterious Zorro’s debut album The Fairy Tale of Zorro Blakk and climbs 19-15.
SIRPAUL smashed it last weekend at Long Island Pride (along with the likes of Debbie Gibson and Robin S!). The singer lays it all out bare 😉 with “Black Leather” rising 22-18 from his album Seventh Star.
The fastest riser belongs to the quartet of brothers who go by their last name of Kongos. The gritty and bassy “Hey I Don’t Know” moves up 25-19.

E-Mute’s “Miracle” gets easily stuck in your head with a compelling vocal and classical piano work. It climbs 24-20.

Debuts

I haven’t been a fan of their past efforts, but even months after its original release “Little Me” by Little Mix has won me over with the swirling carousel of a remix by Steve Smart and Westfunk. It gets down and deep but the keyboard melody and the vocals which build up the chorus are the selling points. Plus the song has a very important and positive message for young women about beauty and image. It debuts at #23.

Next at #24 is another great new female voice and songwriter – Charli XCX. Her song “Boom Clap” from “The Fault In Our Stars” will immediately remind you of a more pop-edged Lorde, but it’s immediately catchy and memorable, and certain to be a huge pop hit as we head into summer, given the singer’s success as appearing on Iggy Azalia’s “Fancy”.

I wrote about this next song recently and now here it is on my chart. Simone Denny was the voice behind great dance hits like Love Inc.’s “Broken Bones” and “You’re A Superstar”, as well as Wide Life’s “All Things (Just Keep Getting Better)”. She’s never been away and is back with something a little more subdued which is perfect for her wide-ranging voice. “Your Love Fades Away” bows at #25 from the upcoming album The Stereo Dynamite Sessions Volume 1.

The last debut belongs to Atlanta-based Nick Hagelin, with another choice song for summer from his free download EP City Lights. “Trust It” scores all the way around – great rhythm, story, and one of Nick’s best straight ahead pop vocals. It arrives at #26.

Extra, Extra… Give ‘Em A Listen (or Five)

HANNIS, “Time Has Come”

The more I hear songs like “Time Has Come”, the more I enjoy the EDM dubstep experience. This song by the Finland native, who got into listening and singing to EDM at the request of her boyfriend, starts off like many great European electro records of the early 2000’s with a soft introduction with Hannis’ inviting voice. And then right before the minute and a half mark, this huge layered wall of dubstep hits and lulls you in like it’s your best friend 🙂 This is truly amazing production work from Alwegs, who hails from Latvia. If his name gets out there, he’s gonna be noticed! “Time Has Come” is a terrific but unassuming start for Hannis, and big things could happen if word of mouth gets out about the song and its unique hybrid EDM style that totally works. TANYA THE SAVAGE, “We Were Once Built There”

It’s somewhat of an interesting recording name, but Tanya The Savage records songs which are guaranteed to embed a mark on your listening experience. She’s based out of Miami, and has been performing since she was a child violinist age 8! “We Were Once Built There” is gorgeous, emotional British/European-flavoured EDM that would be much different without her affecting and powerful vocal. It’s another song to hit you square right out of nowhere and then make you want much more. Tanya The Savage is currently recording an album with Grammy-nominated producer Chris Rodriguez. “We Were Once Built There” is available on iTunes.
