BILLCS New Music Report – March 6/24 with new songs by @Alexander_Olly, Afroki (@Afrojack & @SteveAoki) & @Aviellamusic, Fie Eike, @K3SSmusic & @BrittLari, @Gt_ofice x @MatthewTopper_ x @SarahdeWarren, @BenedictCork, @thisisNoanne, and @SidSethsings

Now that Beyoncé has successfully crossed genres with her two country singles, what’s next in 2024? Everything has gone quiet again. An artist of lesser stature can’t do the same without either a significant label push or a significant social media drive. Artists who are versatile should be able to cross genres, other than to pop, which has been done frequently, but the industry is too fixed on boxing them into one genre, which makes it next to impossible. That also allows radio to exclude artists who don’t record in a genre that suits their programming. I’m not sure if labels try to promote every release at pop radio as they did more than 25 years ago because no one in promotions or at radio is bold enough anymore to try and be a visionary. Anyone got a crystal ball?

In the Report, you can check out my pick of the week, along with one from the host of online radio’s “Top 40 Timeline”, “Big Daddy” Russ Horton, plus “Modern Hype” online radio host DJ Hunter’s “Bop of the Week”. “The Musicman” James Rogers from online radio’s “3D Variety Show” has his Classic Five from 1979 that mostly aren’t disco. I also have my “5-10-15-20-25” feature, looking back on the Top 5 songs in five of the last 25 years from the BILLCS Top 30. One of the artists whose new song I wrote about in this Report has a song on one of those charts too!

OLLY ALEXANDER, “Dizzy”

What better way to break away from the Years & Years moniker than for Olly Alexander to lead “Dizzy” into Eurovision for the UK with his new single “Dizzy”. The more you listen to “Dizzy”, the more infectious it becomes, and it’s not a far stretch from some of Years & Years’ best releases, which hard to believe, go back almost a decade now. “Dizzy” has a mass-appeal factor for audiences because of its common theme about falling in love, and Olly offers another engaging performance which shows why he is where he is today. I’ll still reserve judgment about its chances at winning Eurovision until I hear the other songs that it’s up against, but “Dizzy”, like many other songs from past Eurovision contests, is a hit in its own right.

AFROKI, AVIELLA, “Everything You Do”

And the trend continues – like with Kx5 and more recently Endless Summer, Afroki is the new side-project for Steve Aoki and Afrojack, in which they can mesh their formidable production talents. “Everything You Do” is their first release partnered Proximity’s new label Golden Era, and it’s a festival banger that you’ll be hearing a lot of in the coming months. The producers playfully go at the beats and rhythms with all of their know-how. Vocalist/songwriter Aviella has been a go-to talent in dance music for a few years, working solo or with artists like MYRNE, Acraze and Unknown Brain, with several releases also on Monstercat, and her crisp, classy vocal brings the chorus home. “Everything You Do” is an enjoyable listen with big, anthemic qualities that will garner instant reaction.

FIE EIKE, “Sad”

About a month ago, I brought you words about “The Nile” by Danish singer Fie Eike, who in that song brought alternative electronic pop vibes that would appeal to fans of Kate Bush and Tori Amos, but with a more progressive alternative setting. “Sad” shows that there is much more to Fie Eike than that initial impression. “Sad” is a piano ballad that will appeal to fans of Adele and YEBBA for the sheer beauty of Fie Eike’s vocal in a raw setting. It’s a song about embracing sadness when you’re in the moment, and to be present when you need to absorb the changes around us, which can often affect our emotions and sentiments. Fie Eike gives a taut performance and “Sad” is an engrossing song, not as heavy at all despite what its subject matter might convey, so do yourself a favour and add it to your music discovery list.

K3SS, BRITT LARI, “Deeper”

“Deeper” is a tightly-woven, dark, late night deep house track by San Diego dance producer K3SS with collaborator and vocalist Britt Lari. Both are no strangers to this blog, and it’s great to hear their progression with this kind of cutting edge production being released through Dim Mak. Britt’s seductive vocal combined with K3SS’ bounty of synths and sounds make “Deeper” an easy mix for club DJ’s who want songs that will stand out for their patrons.

GT_OFICE, MATTHEW TOPPER, SARAH DE WARREN, “No Tears”

I normally dislike the use of vocal effects in a song, but if you want to hear a judicious use of them to expand on a hook, then “No Tears” is for you. Two gifted dance producers, Miami’s Gt_ofice and New Jersey-born Matthew Topper, enhance the song with effects and their respective styles while still keeping the always lovely voice of collaborator Sarah de Warren intact. It’s an early summer bop that revolves around the phrase “no tears left to cry”, not too long ago a popular song by Ariana Grande, so the sentiment still lingers for listeners. “No Tears” is dance music radio ready, and could very well follow Gt_ofice’s recent Top 30 hit with ALWZ SNNY and Robbie Rosen, “Feels Like Us” (which also reached #3 on the BILLCS Top 30), onto the charts.

BENEDICT CORK, “Nice Guy”

UK singer/songwriter Benedict Cork just completed a North American tour and has more music coming soon, but he breaks his pop-oriented mold a bit for “Nice Guy”. It’s a rock-flavoured track that weaves a story many of us know, about being nice guys who want more out of relationships and continually get passed over for others who more often than not just want one night stands or short-term flings. Classic rock music styles are coming back into vogue, and Benedict sounds great in a more amped up setting that fleshes out the musicality of “Nice Guy”. NOANNE, “Forgiveness”

Prague-based multi-talent Noanne is on a roll with “Forgiveness”, which follows up “Goodwill” and “White Glove”. Like both singles, “Forgiveness” is another powerful and dramatic affair, with Noanne launching into the song like Florence Welch meets Sarah Brightman. There’s no video this time, but story-wise the song is about finding forgiveness despite the path that led there, which often includes numerous unanswered questions. Sometimes we just have to let go and move on, and “Forgiveness” reassures the listener that it is possible. With her gifted vocal prowess, Noanne straddles theatricality with the essence of pop music, and comes through with an alternative take that captures the fine qualities of both.

SID SETH, “I’m Yours”

It’s been a while since I’ve written about NYC-based singer/songwriter Sid Seth, who came to my attention with the easy-going pop flavours of “Simple But True” and “Caffeine High”. Sid strikes me as a genuine and committed talent, continuing with the earnest story-telling of “I’m Yours”, which seems to come naturally to him as he draws from all genres of music. “I’m Yours” has a solid vocal, and though it might be about 30 seconds too long for what it has to say, it’s an absorbing and fresh listen. SPOTLIGHTING

GARETH EMERY, MARIA LYNN, “Missing You” (Ben Gold remix)

Something Gareth Emery always does well is to create an emotional ballad that goes over particularly well at his spectacular laser-laden concerts or at festivals. While the original of “Missing You” is half-ballad and half-rave up, British trance producer and remixer Ben Gold revs up the rhythm in the first half, and creates an even more layered, enhanced second half. While leaving Maria Lynn’s tender vocal in tact, Ben’s remix actually cranks up the euphoria level which turns a very good ballad into a heartfelt and fervid anthem. At the end, a big comforting hug is highly recommended.

joegarratt, “Uncanny”

British electronic alternative pop singer/songwriter joegarratt has an out-of-left-field surprise with “Uncanny”. In the song he zeroes in on the essence of the dream pop sub-genre by creating a song about basking in success while losing sight of what else is important outside of that achievement. The song has a moving, uncharacteristic structure (watch for a false ending along the way), and the melody is moody but rhythmic enough to keep you swaying. joegarratt’s voice at times seems disembodied but still affecting, and I would draw “Uncanny” to the attention of fans of Porter Robinson and James Blake.

CHET PORTER, fknsyd, “Today Tomorrow Forever”

It’s often quite a treat when Canadian progressive electronic whiz Chet Porter drops a new song, and “Today Tomorrow Forever” is his first in about two years. Teaming up with rising electronic star fknsyd (about whom little is known online, though she has already collaborated with the likes of R.L. Grime, Rezz, and Manila Killa), “Today Tomorrow Forever” bursts with energy in a playful mix that uses its effects judiciously. It’s the kind of song that will make your ears perk up and immediately take notice when you hear it at a concert or festival. Experimental and jubilant, if “Today Tomorrow Forever” is a taste of Chet Porter mach-2023, then I can’t wait to hear more.

MAHALO, MONEY FOR NOTHING, “Everlasting”

L.A.-based dance producer Mahalo teams up with British production duo Money For Nothing for the deep house bliss of “Everlasting”. That uncredited female vocal sounds awfully familiar – perhaps co-writer UK singer Gabrielle Aplin – and it’s the focal point of this banger, particularly all those stunning high notes. There’s definitely a lot of chemistry that went into such a tidy but infectious mix, with some dashes of techno, by all of the players. “Everlasting” should have no problem drumming up support at dance music radio and in clubs.

FEATURING

KACEY FIFIELD, NIPPANDAB, “Petty”

“Petty” is a grower that you shouldn’t sleep on, so make sure that it gets your full attention for a couple of spins. Co-written with mentor and frequent blog visitor Robbie Rosen, and produced by India’s Nippandab (who was also at the control’s for Kacey’s house-flavoured “Toxic” from last summer from her album Between The Lines), “Petty” creates its own lane for Kacey among her songs largely for young adults and teens, and she minces no sentiments in calling out a previous friend/lover for their inconsiderate behaviour and actions. “Petty” is a swift turnaround back to dance music after the recent and more acoustic “Selfish”, and Nippandab navigates the course with rich deep house rhythms and synths.

JULIAN CROSS, AFROJACK, “All I Need”

“All I Need” is a perfectly agreeable eurohouse track that goes down easy that partners fresh vocalist Julian Cross with the legend who is Afrojack. It’s a fine showcase for Belgian singer Julian, who had his first big break as a teenager a few years ago and has never looked back through his association with the Armada label. And having the opportunity to team up with Afrojack is no mean feat even with that connection. “All I Need” has a bright, and memorable synth hook and a rhythm that doesn’t let up. Julian’s voice totally suits the song, though I wish it would have had an opportunity to soar at points when the melody does just that, which could have lent it some anthemic qualities. I think more could be brought out in “All I Need” in remixes.

MOONWOOD, “Curfew”

Australia-based rock quintet Moonwood have a great flair for melody within the genre, which carries relatable stories and particularly cool vocals by singer Jake McCullough. Following up the recent single “Lady In Red”, “Curfew” offers a familiar mix of guitars, bass, drums and keyboards and a classic rock song structure, and it’s all tight and spot on. So if your thing is early 2000s’ rock by Lifehouse, Fuel, Powderfinger and others, Moonwood does a fine job of reigniting that appeal and reshaping that sound for the 2020’s.

DEEP CHILLS, TILSEN, “Goodbye”

“Goodbye” is a warm and touching midtempo melodic house track that ruminates over those times where relationships come to an end. Italian producer Deep Chills reteams with Canadian singer/songwriter Tilsen, who offers up an empathetic vocal in her high range as she relates the feelings after the fact while knowing that there is no other solution. Deep Chills delivers his usual classy arrangement which grasps the various moods within the song at the right times along with providing other subtleties in the background.

There’s quite a shakeup at the top in this edition, where some long-lasting favourites make room for newer ones. And three new entries keep the fresh songs flowing into the chart, and they’re all independent releases!

It’s “The Only One” by Cerrone & Mercer with British vocalist Brendan Reilly that takes over at the top moving up 6-1. It’s a fantastic 70’s disco-inspired track thanks to Cerrone, the popular disco producer from that era. It’s the third #1 for fellow French producer Mercer, who reached the top last year with “Aretha” and in 2018 with “Satisfy”.

Immediately looking to challenge for #1 is British dance producer Lewis Thompson with vocalist/songwriter Clementine Douglas with “Enchanté” soaring 10-2.

Still on the rise within the Top 5 are Afrojack and James Arthur with “Lose You”, climbing 5-3.

And also landing quickly in the Top 5 is “I Go Dancing” by Canadian dance producer Frank Walker with UK singer Ella Henderson, which jumps 9-4.

Another Canadian producer, Famba, gets his fourth Top 10 entry with the techno-infused “No Sleep”, featuring Glasgow KI$$, which moves up 11-8.

UK duo Everything But The Girl also scores their fourth Top 10 entry with the drum ‘n bass-infused “Nothing Left To Lose”, which rises 13-10. Their last entry, however was right at the turn of the century, “Temperamental”, which reached #2 in 2000. Be sure to check out the video which is shot in one take.

Philadelphia duo N i G H T S could be headed for the Top 10 again with the eclectic but intriguing sounds of the brief “Boyband”, which climbs 22-16.

The beautiful house track “Fever Dreamer” by SG Lewis, Charlotte Day Wilson and Channel Tres seemed to be stuck near the bottom of the chart, but breaks into the Top 20, jumping 23-18.

The Fastest Riser on the chart is “I Feel Like Dancing” by Jason Mraz, which soars 30-20. It’s from his upcoming album Mystical Magical Rhythmical Radical Ride, and has another fun video which you should check out above.

The Highest Debut belongs to a Spanish singer/songwriter who has a similar style to Jason Mraz, but in his own unique way. The Boy From The South makes his debut on the chart with the whimsical “Amazing-Man” at #25.

His EP Metadramatic is full of great songs, most of which were released as singles and written up in these blog pages. His name is St Humain, originally from Singapore but now based in Sydney, Australia, and one of those songs, “Memento”, bows at #27.

And arriving at #28 is new Toronto singer/songwriter Tyler Lorette who shows a lot of promise with the emotional ballad “Shattered”. If you enjoy Conan Gray and JVKE like I do, then you’ll enjoy Tyler’s song too.

#BILLCSTop30 #661 – March 13/22

I’m using this space this week to provide readers and chartphiles with a little bit of insight into how I compile my chart and what I take into consideration. First and foremost, it is entirely based on my own opinion. But what you have to realize, is that I really do love all of the songs on the chart.

There are only 30 of about 60 or more that are on my personal, private playlist that I play regularly throughout the week. More than 40% of the songs on my chart are released independently, but you may have noticed that this is the only space where I would write about most of those songs released on major labels. Most of those songs don’t need my help with inclusion in the BILLCS New Music Report but I’m not going to disregard a song I love because it’s released on a major label.

Songs are added to the chart with the intention that they could reach my Top 10. Some don’t simply due to the competition. Some songs wear out faster than others. And then there are songs that are “growers” and take time to travel up the chart too. Very few songs peak at #20 or below as a result. And yes, sometimes I may chart a song and soon get sick of it, or retrospectively feel that I should have charted one when I didn’t.

Submissions from artists, managers, and publicists always take priority, but the most important thing – submission or not – is my gut feeling about a song through the discovery process.

Getting a third appearance at the top of the chart is “Hero” by Martin Garrix and JVKE, surpassing Martin’s previous #1’s “Animals” and “Proxy”, which each had two appearances at #1 in 2014. It’s hard to say what song will succeed “Hero” at the top as early as in two weeks.

“Lose You” by Afrojack and James Arthur climbs 7-5 and is one of those songs that gets even better with frequent plays.

“The Only One” by Cerrone, Mercer, and Brendan Reilly leaps 13-6, becoming Mercer’s fourth trip to the Top 10. It’s from the excellent album Cerrone By Cerrone, wherein the renown French disco producer reboots his biggest classics in fine fashion too.

“I Go Dancing” by Frank Walker and Ella Henderson climbs 17-9, becoming Frank’s second release to get to my Top 10 after 2021’s #1 “Like Gold” with Loud Luxury and Stephen Puth. You can catch Frank throughout North America this summer as support for acts like Loud Luxury at major venues.

The Fastest Riser on the chart is the 90’s house-soaked “Enchanté” by Just Kiddin’s Lewis Thompson and singer/songwriter Clementine Douglas, which soars 20-10. It’s Clementine’s third visit to the Top 10, previously credited on Sonny Fodera’s “Angel” (#4) and uncredited on Matoma’s “The Power” (#3).

Toronto-born electronic producer Dabin played a sold out show in his home town on March 12, and his latest collaboration “Hollow” with Kai Wachi and vocalist Lø Spirit moves up 21-16.

“Sacrifice” is a beautiful, complex effort from Kx5 (Kaskade and Deadmau5) in collaboration with Sofi Tukker, and it rises 23-17.

Think of “Like U” by L.A.’s Party Nails and Austin’s Boy Sim as a pre-summer bop. This engaging release moves up 27-21.

Philadelphia duo N i G H T S are all about the hip hop inspired atmosphere in “Boyband”, which climbs 28-22. I’m really not sure what the song is all about, but its vibe is hypnotic and I’m glad it’s getting deserved attention five years after its original release.

The Highest Debut belongs to Seattle’s Surf Mesa (aka 22 year old Powell Aguirre) with vocalist Selah Sol and “City of Love” at #28. This melodic house track stirs up the feels for anyone who has felt out of place in big city surroundings after a breakup. You can catch Surf Mesa on the festival circuit this year, and he plays a captivating set.

Next at #29 is NYC-based indie electronic producer Greg Oakland with his trance-influenced “Never Temporary”, featuring a potent vocal by Tara Louise. Greg actually sent to me the song to hear months ago, and I’m so glad the team at Future Sounds of Egypt had the inspired taste to release another song by Greg. And here it is on my chart!

Arriving at #30 is what I would call a “comeback” record for Jason Mraz and a return to the whimsical pop sound which got him his first hit 20 years ago. The song is “I Feel Like Dancing” from the upcoming album Mystical Magical Rhythmical Radical Ride (I dare you to keep those words in proper order!), and be sure and check out the seamlessly filmed and well-choreographed video above. It’s Jason’s 10th appearance on my chart but his first since 2012.

#BILLCSTop30 #660 – February 27/23

As I mentioned in earlier blog posts, I was in Las Vegas for an extra long weekend, where I caught both Martin Garrix and Afrojack in concert. As I don’t attend festivals, it’s unlikely I would see them in a big club setting anywhere else, so I wore myself out by experiencing the Vegas nightlife again. Equally energetic sets, Martin Garrix focused on his popular releases which caused many singalongs in the crowd, while Afrojack’s set was more of an all out party, and he even tried to share a bottled beverage by pouring a shot or so into the mouths of some audience members near the front. I wish Martin had spoken to the crowd more, but I got to hear a lot of my favourites by him including the early “Animals” and “Tremor”. And both artists are in my Top 10 this week.

And so Martin Garrix and JVKE hold on to #1 for a second appearance with “Hero”, which I didn’t hear in his Vegas set though it could have been played after I left at 3 a.m. JVKE is coming to my city in August, and I managed to snag a decently-priced resale ticket. “Golden Hour”, a former BILLCS Top 30 #1 which departed the chart this week, reached #10 on the Billboard Hot 100, and we’ll be hearing a lot more from JVKE in the months to come.

Although it has fierce competition above it, “Wish On An Eyelash, Pt. 2” by Australia’s Mallrat and The Chainsmokers glided up the chart 9-3. I’m not sure why more people haven’t latched on to this gorgeous and thoughtful feel good release. It’s The Chainsmokers’ 8th trip to my Top 5.

Although it’s one of the oldest songs on the chart, Zac Poor’s “Ghost Boy” still inches up a notch to another new peak, 5-4.

“Wings (I Won’t Let You Down)” by Armand Van Helden and Karen Harding climbs 7-5, becoming both artists’ 3rd Top 5 on my chart and Armand’s first since 2005’s #1 “My My My”.

It’s convenient timing due to his Vegas show that Afrojack acquires his biggest release on my chart to date as “Lose You”, with British vocalist James Arthur, soars 15-7. Judging from some recent social media posts, it appears that Afrojack and Martin Garrix may have a collaboration in the works, so we’ll see if that unfolds anytime soon.

Also nestling into the Top 10 this week are Benedict Cork’s poignant “Dream Of You” (12-9, above), which becomes his third song to reach my Top 10, and Timmy Trumpet & Tungevaag’s “La Danse”(below), which rises 13-10.

Toronto-based producer Famba is headed for the Top 10 in two weeks with his techno house track “No Sleep” (above), with Glasgow KI$$, which climbs 17-12. You can also check out Famba’s latest release, “Estar conmigo”, below.

“The Only One” by Cerrone and Mercer with vocalist Brendan Reilly, makes its presence better known on the chart by leaping 21-13. This one is a dance floor filler, so club DJ’s should get on it!

The Fastest Riser on the chart is a pop and dance delight by Canada’s Frank Walker with UK vocalist Ella Henderson, “I Go Dancing”, which vaults 29-17.

The Highest Debut of five on this chart is a surefire dance hit that could cross over to Top 40 called “Enchanté” by British producer Lewis Thompson and vocalist/songwriter Clementine Douglas. It’s Clementine’s third appearance on the chart following her work with Sonny Fodero on “Angel” (#4, 2021) and her unbilled appearance on Matoma’s “The Power” (#3), which just departed the chart. Lewis previously appeared on the chart in 2019 as one half of Just Kiddin with Cedric Gervais on “Good Things” (#2).

Kx5 get their first appearance on the chart with “Sacrifice” at #23 in collaboration with Sofi Tukker. Kaskade appeared on the chart in 2010 with his remix of Crystal Method’s “Come Back Clean” (#5), while Deadmau5 was on the chart two years ago with “Bridged By A Lightwave” (#15) with Kiesza. It’s Sofi Tukker’s 5th appearance on the chart following 2021’s #2 “Mon Cheri” with Amadou & Mariam.

At #27 is the chart debut for L.A. indie alt.pop artist Party Nails and Austin producer/vocalist Boy Sim with the pop-punk flavours of “Like U”.

Returning to the chart for the first time since 2018 is enigmatic Philadelphia alt.pop/soul duo N i G H T S, emerging from the shadows at last, with “Boyband” at #28. The song has actually been rebooted from its 2018 original release thanks to an intriguing new black and white video, above. It’s the third appearance on the chart for the duo, both of whose previous entries have reached the Top 5.

And bowing on the chart at #29 is Toronto duo Boy Aries with the hypnotic “Drive”. Boy Aries consists of singer Jordan Radics and producer/instrumentalist Turbo Bobbi. Jordan was previously part of the indie band BLAJK, which charted two songs on the BILLCS Top 30 including the #6 “Lethal” in 2017.

This week, I get to inform you about a new online radio feature that has actually been live since November. The Top 40 Timeline airs 4 times every Saturday on different online stations – at Noon EST on UK National Radio, at 4pm EST on Halton Hills Radio Online, at 6pm EST on FM 108, and at Midnight EST on Radio GTA. In addition to my other show, Your Weekend New Music Mix, I am literally all over online radio now on Saturdays. Do try and give the segment a listen! SPOTLIGHTING

LEWIS THOMPSON, CLEMENTINE DOUGLAS, “Enchanté”

You can get your early 90’s house fix with “Enchanté” by up and coming UK producer Lewis Thompson and singing/songwriting sensation Clementine Douglas. You can expect “Enchanté” to be all over dance radio and clubs by Spring for the rest of the year, thanks to its reverent classic house rhythm that will transport you back to the days of Inner City, Robert Owens, Ten City and many others who left their imprints on dance music. Continuing her slew of hits after releases with DVBBS, Matoma, Sonny Fodera, and Dom Dolla, Clementine delivers another potent vocal, making “Enchanté” an addictive feast for the ears and feet.

GREYSON CHANCE, “The Balcony Song”

Greyson’s latest album Palladium is rich and deep with fine songs, which I was fortunate to see executed in concert two months ago. I believe a deluxe version of the album is forthcoming, so until we can find out what’s new on that release, “The Balcony Song” is now being promoted, thanks to a super one-take video above, and you’ll be able to see an authentic performance like what I raved about after the concert I saw. Greyson is all about taking risks on Palladium and the beginning, with an unexpected low, gravelly vocal, hardly sounds like him at all. The song builds with an intriguing story, which makes it well worth hearing.

ST. HUMAIN, “Dial Tones”

The latest bunch of releases by Australia-based Singapore-bred singer/songwriter St. Humain have come to fruition to comprise his new EP Metadramatic, which also features a few new songs. Right up there with my favourites that I’ve written about, “Memento” and “Sick Sad Love Song”, is a new wistful ballad “Dial Tones”. Thanks to some beautiful wordsmithing and a delightful hook, “Dial Tones” tugs at your heartstrings while relating to those common times in most people’s lives when a relationship is at its end and there’s nothing special left. Be sure to make Metadramatic one of your new go-to’s to check out. St. Humain has a gift for creating lyrical and gripping songs full of many moods and rhythms that go down easy.

VICTOR PERRY, “Rest”

“Rest” is Victor’s first release of the year, and his first new solo music since last year’s enthralling “Punching Bag”, which got to #5 on the BILLCS Top 30 among Victor’s many singles which have reached the Top 10. The song zeroes in on some of Victor’s always listenable softer tones while telling the straight forward story about taking a break in an intense relationship. The flavour in “Rest” is R&B/pop à la Michael Jackson and Toni Braxton, and there’s a lot of pristine detail within thanks to solid production.

FEATURING

ANDREAS LIBEROS, “Bonfire”

British pop singer Andreas Liberos returns with his first new music in three years called “Bonfire”. Like preceding single “Lighthouse”, it’s a song that reaches out to listeners with a positive and supportive message. With his soulful tones and a rhythmic, good-natured vibe, Andreas calls on those who are having a bad day or facing personal difficulties to let him be their non-judgmental sounding board, role modelling (in the video above) what others should do as well. “Bonfire” takes a few listens before it grabs you, but being genuine and caring in these often strange times goes a long way in a song.

ODESZA, THE KNOCKS, “Love Letter” (obli remix)

“Love Letter” is one of the best and most recognizable songs from Odesza’s stellar album The Last Goodbye, totally commanding your attention in concert. So I’m pleased that a gripping remix of the song appears in Odesza’s recent remix EP of songs from the album by one of Odesza’s rising protégés, obli. Co-written and produced with the multi-talented and always enjoyable duo The Knocks, “Love Letter” is given a fresh interpretation by obli. Replacing its moody breaks is a more continuous flow with some added bounce, which will give club DJ’s plenty to work with.

ELDERBROOK, AMTRAC, “I’ll Be Around”

British singer, songwriter and producer Elderbrook (otherwise known as Alexander Kotz) first tapped into the public consciousness with the Grammy-nominated, droll and infectious “Cola” with producer Camelphat a few years back. After a next-level series of opening sets for Odesza on their tour last year, which I saw, he’s now selling out mid-sized venues of his own, thanks to a series of fine recent songs such as “When I Talk” (with Kx5 aka Deadmau5 and Kaskade) and “Inner Light” with Bob Moses. “I’ll Be Around” was crafted with L.A. based producer Amtrac and is a real grower, with a laid back vibe featuring a punchy rhythm and some positive words that highlight determination. Solid songs like “I’ll Be Around” show why the rise and rise of Elderbrook continues.

Elderbrook plays HISTORY in Toronto on both March 16 (tickets available) and 17 (only resale tickets available).

SEAN SMITH, “Young Love”

Although we haven’t heard too much from British singer Sean Smith (formerly of X-Factor stars Same Difference) since the release of his albums, 2021’s Swing For The 90’s and 2020’s Solo, he returns with another glimmering, crisp pop/dance anthem called “Young Love”. Co-written with producer Justin Busch and also produced by Lenny B, “Young Love” follows the springboard of last year’s “In Love With The Night” (also helmed and written by Justin) with a song full of spirit and drive. The production could really do without so many effects on Sean’s fine voice at times; without them his vocal is golden. Coming at the end of March are remixes, including one by Matt Pop which gives “Young Love” an even bigger, 80’s inspired boost.

All of a sudden, there is a spate of really good songs out there, which is making it difficult for me every two weeks to add new songs to my chart! Just so that you all know, besides my Top 30, I have a personal playlist in my iTunes that contains more than double those songs – yes I still buy mp3’s too 🙂 Every week, I shortlist songs for the BILLCS New Music Report on Wednesdays mainly using a private Spotify playlist, and the songs that get added to my iTunes playlist are in the running for the BILLCS Top 30 – the best of the best. And I’m always listening for songs that grab me on first listen. It’s a strategy I’ve used for years with some modifications along the way. So hopefully that gives you some insight into how the blog comes to be and what a rabid music fan that I still am.

I’m pleased to announce my latest online radio segment that has in fact been airing since November called My Retro Pick of the Week! It’s featured on “Big Daddy” Russ Horton’s massive Top 40 Timeline show at the top of the second hour, and currently airs on Saturdays on a variety of online radio stations including UK National Radio (Noon EST), Halton Hills Radio Online (4 PM EST), FM 108 (6 PM EST), and Radio GTA (Midnight EST)! The segment tells the backstory behind some of my favourite songs of the past as well as some tidbits about the artists. Some of the songs I’ve featured so far have included “Wicked Game” by Chris Isaak, “River Deep-Mountain High” by Ike & Tina Turner, “Love Hangover” by Diana Ross, “The Letter” by The Box Tops, “(I Just) Died In Your Arms” by Cutting Crew, “Endless Sleep” by Jody Reynolds, and “Reach Out, I’ll Be There” by The 4 Tops!! I may put the segments online for you to hear in the future.

While JVKE’s former #1 and Billboard Top 10 hit “Golden Hour” slides to #4 in its 10th and final appearance (20 weeks) on the chart, this fresh new talent is back on top, this time with Martin Garrix with their collaboration “Hero”. In an interesting coincidence, Martin’s first two songs to reach my chart, “Animals” and “Proxy” were both #1 in 2014. They, along with other talents like Daniel Bedingfield, Sam Smith, Rufus Wainwright and Matthew Koma have all achieved this feat. “Hero” has plenty of competition so let’s see how long it can hold fort at the top!

Trying to close the gap again in the coming weeks is “Black Mascara”, the haunting song by Greyson Chance from his album Palladium, which rises 5-2, becoming his third song to reach the runner-up spot, after “Dancing Next To Me” and “My Dying Spirit”, which just departed the chart after 9 appearances (18 weeks).

I always root for a good underdog, and “Ghost Boy” by L.A.-based singer/songwriter Zac Poor is just that. It moves up 7-5, and please check out the thoughtful video above, and don’t be surprised if you shed a few tears.

Also new to the Top 10 are former national Dance Radio #1 “Spiral” by NYC’s Lena Leon (11-8, above), and “Wish On An Eyelash Pt. 2” by Australia’s Mallrat in collaboration with The Chainsmokers (12-9, below). It’s The Chainsmokers’ 12th time in the Top 10!!

The Fastest Riser on the chart is “Lose You” (above) by the dynamic team of Afrojack and James Arthur, which soars 22-15. And good news for James Arthur fans. Despite him never before appearing on my chart, his collaboration with Brazil’s Alok is also the Highest Debut at #27 called “Work With My Love” (below). Both feature compelling vocals by James, and to me he has a huge future in dance music if he wishes!

I was pleased to check out Famba’s live set locally last week, and we finally got to meet up after me writing about him for the last six years! His latest and techno-inspired release is a gem called “No Sleep” featuring Glasgow KI$$, which climbs 23-17.

Arriving at #28 is “Hollow” by the terrific trio of Dabin, Kai Wachi and singer/screamer Lø Spirit. Everything about this release is next level, the producers have outdone themselves and Lø Spirit is one helluva vocalist. It’s Dabin’s second appearance on the chart. He previously appeared on best bud Illenium’s “Hearts On Fire” with Lights (#5, 2021).

At #29 is one of those songs that felled me on first listen and I would say is a ‘cousin’ of Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own”. It’s “I Go Dancing” by Toronto dance producer Frank Walker featuring British sensation Ella Henderson. It’s Frank’s second appearance on the chart – his first, with Loud Luxury and Stephen Puth called “Like Gold”, went to #1 two years ago. And Stephen (aka Puth the Younger) co-produced and co-wrote “I Go Dancing” too.

Rounding out the list at #30 is “Fever Dreamer” by British producer SG Lewis and featuring Toronto singer/songwriter Charlotte Day Wilson and L.A. rapper Channel Tres. It’s a compelling listen that is heavily influenced by classic disco, with a soulful vocal by Charlotte, and the results are tantalizing. It’s culled from SG’s latest album AudioLust and Higher Love.

#BILLCSNewMusicReport – February 1/23 spotlighting new songs by @_Patrick_Wolf Boy Aries @JordanRadics @Cobimusic @SurfMesa & @theSelahSol

I’m hoping that you are enjoying the updated format of the BILLCS New Music Report, which I began at the end of October, to reduce the pressure of writing every day or every other day, and to compact my reviews into a tidy, weekly showcase mainly for songs that are released independently. In 13 weeks, that has allowed me to write about over 100 songs which I put forward for your enjoyment. It’s impossible to keep up with the pace of releases, so I’m always happy when I even find a great song or two to write about that is still within 6-8 months of its release date. It’s all about discovery.

With the latest revival of older releases which I wrote about two weeks ago, the often offered insight by writers and other people in the biz that songs which were released more than two or three weeks ago are no longer up for consideration/their attention is hereby tossed into the waste bin. It’s no surprise that some independent performers are looking into their back catalogue of releases to ignite interest in songs that did not get their fair due at the time. To paraphrase the adage, “miss it once, shame on you, miss it twice, shame on me”.

SPOTLIGHTING

PATRICK WOLF, “Enter The Day”

It was so nice to learn (thanks to Stephen Sears) of new music by London’s Patrick Wolf, his first in 11 years! The creative, unorthodox alternative pop singer/songwriter is known primarily for his albums The Magic Position (2007) and Lupercalia (2011), and their delightful songs “The Magic Position” and “The City”, both of which appeared on the BILLCS Top 30, reaching #4 and #10 respectively. “Enter The Day” is an entirely different affair though, a lyrical and thought-provoking song that extends hope to someone who is going through rough times in their life and hoping they “land in the golden mean” “where they oughta be”. Patrick gives a magnetic performance and, accordingly, the song immediately pulls you in. He’s got more music up his sleeve too. To coincide with the 20th anniversary of his debut release Lycanthropy, an EP called The Night Safari is due later this year.

BOY ARIES, “Drive”

Toronto duo Boy Aries follow up their single “Comets + The Death of Time”, which I wrote about recently, with an even more compelling song called “Drive”. The song’s about calling out someone when they’re wrong, and when apology is clearly due. Jordan Radics’ commanding, inspired vocal turns the four words “turn your car around” into a signature unto itself – and the signal to do the right thing and mend fences. The production by Chris Perry with music by Turbo Bobbi is haunting and relatable. It will transport you back in time to a similar situation where you may or may not have received an apology. Certainly, “Drive” is slow and moody, but it’s an easy, fascinating listen thanks to a standout vocal.

COBI, “All On You”

I am all for Cobi’s current era of bluesy pop and rock songs that work so well with his voice. He scales it back to acoustic guitar for “All On You” to make both his voice and the lyrics in the song positively gleam. The harmonies break up the mix from being too static. “All On You” is simply a great song and with its fine performance it doesn’t need any additional trappings to change it or make it work any better.

SURF MESA, SELAH SOL, “City Of Love”

After breaking through the proverbial glass ceiling unexpectedly with the Dance Club Play chart #1 and Hot 100 Top 30 hit “ily (i love you baby)” in 2019, Seattle’s Surf Mesa (aka 22 year old Powell Aguirre) is back with the wistful bop “City Of Love”, which follows up last year’s wild “Marching Band” with Nitti Gritti. Led by a fresh vocal from newcomer Selah Sol, who sounds like a cross between Brandyn Burnette and Brando (singer on Loud Luxury’s “Body”), “City Of Love” is about trying to escape loneliness in the big city after a relationship has ended, but the thoughts of that person won’t go away. The song has a fine house bounce to it, which will go down well at festivals. I’ve seen Surf Mesa perform a super fun set in concert. He’s got great ears for mixing and for keeping the flow going in concert, so be sure to check out his show and listen for “City Of Love” in the mix.

FEATURING

R3HAB, AFROJACK, “Shockwave”

“Shockwave” is one of those short (2:03) blasts of solid fun that’s destined to be a club and crowd pleaser. It slams hard from the first note and is produced in a classic electronic banger structure – that could go on a lot longer with more drops – from veterans R3HAB and Afrojack. As much as I enjoy “Shockwave”, I’d love it if they’d team up next time for something even more powerful (which each has done many times before solo) that will really get under your skin.

JAMES PATTERSON, “To A Disco”

James Patterson (aka Mr JPatt) is one half of The Knocks, hardly strangers to these blog pages or my chart over the last 10 years, and “To A Disco” is his first solo release. Anyone who has ever attended a show by The Knocks is sure to love this funky ode to disco and its related good times in the 70’s – even though the artist himself was not around for it – because that’s the spirit they embrace without any pretentions. The Knocks often use other vocalists but at other times when Mr JPatt takes the lead the results have been smashing (example, “The Key” from their album 55). Any dance music lovers who know that disco is not a dirty word will thoroughly embrace “To A Disco”.

PETER WILSON, “Simone” (Matt Pop remix) and “Gone for Good”

It’s always a pleasure when two Peter Wilson delights come to my attention, but I must say I’m remiss for not knowing about the release of the Aussie singer/songwriter’s album The Great Unknown last summer, which includes both songs. But “Simone” (above) gets a percolating Matt Pop remix, which is always a good thing, adding zest to a lovely song about losing someone, which Peter conveys so well. “Gone For Good” (below) has the benefit of being co-produced by Stock-Aitken-Waterman mixmaster extraordinaire Pete Hammond. Indeed, fans of S-A-W will be mighty pleased with its slick arrangement which incorporates familiar Italodisco elements that always suit Peter’s voice, and are particularly engaging on this track.

LORI CULLEN, BETA ONE, “Here’s Where The Story Ends”

90’s alternative music fans will know right away that “Here’s Where The Story Ends” is indeed a cover of The Sundays’ memorable 1990 release. The singer is Toronto’s Lori Cullen, who has previously been a Juno Award nominee in the jazz category. She’s supported by Canadian electronic producer Beta One (aka James de Pinho) who gives the song a modernistic backdrop. Lori’s cool tones are definitely the star, and she evokes the same appeal of Harriet Wheeler of The Sundays, which will appeal to fans of the original. The pace is a bit slower and deliberate but that does not get in the way of enjoying “Here’s Where The Story Ends” for the fine electronic pop interpretation that it is.

AXEL MANSOOR, “Frame Of Mind”

After a lot of soul searching and travelling which has taken him away from creating music over the past few years, L.A.’s Axel Mansoor is back with a snappy ditty called “Frame of Mind”. It’s a really short (2:02) ode to being positive, and enjoying how you feel while it’s happening. After his more recent, complex and deeply personal and cathartic releases, “Frame of Mind” is hopefully a taste of even more good songs to come soon. Axel has been nominated for a daytime Emmy Award, was the face of Clubhouse for 7 weeks, was a contestant on TV’s “Songland”, and has even got to #1 on the BILLCS Top 30, twice! I’m sure there’s a lot brewing behind-the-scenes that I’m confident is waiting for us to hear!

#BILLCSTop30 #657 – January 16/23

It’s here! I can finally post it officially! Yes, the chart first published in January 1998, initially as the Tuned-On! Top 10 until August that year, when it increased to a Top 30. The chart has always been open to having both albums and singles appear, and in 2003, I began allowing any song from around the world to chart. In the 2000’s, I also allowed free downloads to chart, and one eventually reached #1 in 2009 (it was “Pink Cadillac” by 100 Akres and Roz Bell). Artists have never been restricted to having one song appear on the chart. And there are only two rules: A song can only remain on the chart for 10 appearances (20 weeks), unless it is in an upward moving position, and that only happened once (“Rolling In The Deep” by Adele peaked at #2 in its 11th appearance, then left the chart). I have been tempted at times to increase the chart to a Top 40 but my original preference has always held through those moments.

To start off this 25th anniversary celebration, I have a new #1, and it’s a song I didn’t think would initially get there, after Conan Gray’s “Yours” leapt over it, having debuted the chart after. I’m talking about JVKE’s “Golden Hour” (above), which succeeds “Yours” and gets to the top in its 8th appearance. And even better yet for the 19 year old talented pianist and songwriter, his collaboration with Martin Garrix for “Hero” (below) is the Fastest Riser, soaring 22-8. It becomes Martin’s 9th Top 10 entry too.

“Satisfaction” (above) by Darin is right behind “Golden Hour”, moving up 3-2, from his EP My Purple Clouds. And it hasn’t happened for a while, but Darin now has three songs on the chart. His standalone single “What’s The Point” bumps up 15-14, while “Memories” (below), another track from My Purple Clouds, arrives at #29.

Matoma’s energetic anthem “The Power” (above) rises another notch, 4-3, while Joel Corry’s song with Tom Grennan, “Lionheart (Fearless)” (below) climbs 7-4.

Also new to the Top 10 are Zac Poor’s emotional delight “Ghost Boy” (11-9, above, in its new black and white video), and the teaming of Illenium and MAX for “Worst Day” (13-10, below). It’s Illenium’s 9th trip to the Top 10, while MAX has accumulated 10 Top 10’s!

Immediately outside of the Top 10, recent upstarts “Black Mascara” by Greyson Chance (16-11, above) and “Wings (I Won’t Let You Down)” by Armand Van Helden & Karen Harding (18-12, below) await their placements in two weeks. Karen’s also been a regular presence in this blog recently due to a slew of top calibre new releases!

I’m skipping through the middle of the chart because in addition to Darin’s “Memories”, there are five debuts, after a number of long-lasting favourites departed the chart. And put on those dancing shoes…

One of the most creative and memorable new releases around is “La Danse” by Australia’s Timmy Trumpet and Norway’s Tungevaag, which arrives at #24. It’s Timmy’s second appearance on the chart following 2019’s #2 “World At Our Feet”. And Tungevaag is the second Norwegian producer on the chart, along with Matoma.

At #25 is a stunning cover of Talking Heads’ “Slippery People” (above) by UK producer The Shapeshifters and vocalists Ramona Renea and Fiorious from the album Let Loose. The original version is included in the Heads’ album Speaking In Tongues, but this version more closely resembles the more obscure 1984 cover version by The Staple Singers (below). Otherwise known as Simon Marlin, The Shapeshifters has previously charted twice before, last in 2006, but more importantly, with the #1 “Lola’s Theme” in 2004. The vocalists deliver excellent performances and clearly had a good time making this one.

“Lose You” by Afrojack and James Arthur bows at #27. It’s the fourth appearance on the chart for Afrojack, but a first time for James, who usually does not record dance releases but whose voice is suited immensely well for them, lending an emotional depth and vulnerable quality to “Lose You” that another vocalist likely couldn’t provide.

The fifth debut at #28 is “No Sleep” by Toronto-based producer Famba and vocalist GLASGOW KI$$. It’s Famba’s 6th entry on the chart, following last year’s “Forever”, and continues in a similar clubby vein, a few steps removed from his more pop flavoured releases which have landed him in Canada’s Top 10. Check out the original above, and the new Silver Panda remix below, which plays even more on some of the techno influences in the song.

SPOTLIGHTING

DARIN, “What’s The Point”

It’s very rare indeed for me to be writing about an artist two weeks in a row, but Sweden’s Darin has released the rock-flavoured “What’s The Point” quickly after the recent “Satisfaction”. What’s different here is that “What’s The Point” is a cover of a fondly remembered 2010 hit in Sweden by the duo Johnossi. Darin’s vocal is enhanced by some harmonies and other effects which compliment the energy level in the production. Darin takes “What’s The Point” to another level with a blazing interpretation that suits the song’s lyrics and message.

FAMBA and GLASGOW KI$$, “No Sleep”

It’s great to hear Toronto-based dance producer Famba settling back into the club-oriented style that got him on the map in the first place. “No Sleep” is a simmering hot pot of deep house featuring newcomer GLASGOW KI$$ that blows up in all the right places. If you hear this one at 3 a.m. in a club then you can certainly call “No Sleep” your new late night club anthem. It’s definitely one of Famba’s best recent releases and is the follow up to “Forever”.

LENA LEON, “Spiral”

NYC’s Lena Leon is a popular go-to vocalist for electronic dance music songs, but she’s also been releasing her own music alongside those successes. After adding a brilliant vocal to Mahalo and Milkwish’s “Careless” (which reached #3 on the BILLCS Top 30) earlier this year, “Spiral” is breaking out at dance music radio, a smooth deep house track co-written and with production by those talented guys, The Disco Fries. But it’s Lena’s vocal that’s the star of the show, and when you hear “Spiral” alongside a lot of samey-sounding dance music it is simply unmistakable.

AFROJACK and JAMES ARTHUR, “Lose You”

Following up the recent fun deep house track “Hit It” and his current dance radio hit “Day N Night”, Afrojack is unstoppable with “Lose You”, featuring British singer/songwriter James Arthur. And James’ vocal certainly suits the electronic dance genre, with “Lose You” a quick but intense track that benefits from a really rich, masterful Afrojack production. “Lose You” should have no trouble following up “Day N Night” at dance radio.

THE SHAPESHIFTERS with RAMONA RENEA and FIORIOUS, “Slippery People”

Veteran UK dance producer The Shapeshifters (aka Simon Marlin) – best known for his 2004 UK #1 “Lola’s Theme” (which also reached #1 on the BILLCS Top 30) – returns with his take on Talking Heads’ “Slippery People”, originally from the Heads’ 1983 album Speaking In Tongues, from their new album Let Loose. But to me, this version is less about the Talking Heads’ original and more about the amazing 1984 cover by The Staple Singers. It’s a feast for your ears with powerful and soulful vocals by Ramona Renea and Fiorious burning brightly next to Mavis and Pops Staples, and the loaded arrangement featuring strings and horns makes it all the more dynamic. Don’t sleep on this one!

TELYKAST and FRANCIS KAREL, “Better Now”

L.A.-based production trio TELYKast have had a great year, which started off with the dance radio #1 “Unbreakable” (which also reached #1 on the BILLCS Top 30) and almost ends with another one, as “Body To Body” finds its way to the top of the national dance radio charts this week. “Better Now” is another compelling track that is more of an urgent-sounding anthem than usual. That’s thanks to the potent voice of Indonesian singer Francis Karel, who is quickly finding his way into the John Martin-Clinton Kane-Jared Lee graduate school of go-to dance music vocalists. The energy level is guaranteed to soar on the dance floor or at a festival when the DJ spins “Better Now”.

ALMA FAYE BROOKS and LOUIS TOTEDA & THE HIGH STEPPIN’ ORCHESTRA

“Dreams Don’t Only Happen At Christmas” and “Con Te Partirò (Time To Say Goodbye)”

This “double A sided” single marks a sparkling return to recorded music for 70’s Montreal-based, Texas-born disco singer Alma Faye Brooks, who has a small repertoire of songs adorned by club DJ’s years later, which includes her modest Canadian radio hit “Stop I Don’t Need No Sympathy” and dance club hit “It’s Over”. Over time, Alma Faye’s voice has gotten bigger and more powerful which adds a lot of charm to her joyous, self-penned “Dreams Don’t Only Happen At Christmas” (above), and allows her to create a splendid cover of “Con Te Partirò” (below), popularized as a duet in the UK by Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman, reaching #2 there in 1997, and then two years later as a #1 dance smash by Donna Summer. Alma Faye puts her own spin on the song which holds its own against Donna’s version, thanks to production by Louis Toteda (former leader of Nightlife Unlimited) and the legendary John Luongo, on whose JLM label these songs are released. “Dreams” will definitely brighten up your holiday playlist, while “Con Te Partirò” is waiting to shake up clubgoers once again on the dance floor.

MR! MOURAY, “Cats Can’t Fly”

Mr! Mouray is a Toronto-area quartet of veteran rock musicians with a penchant for amusing song and album titles. Led by lead vocalist and guitarist Simon Bedford-James and my good friend, Canadian Pop Music Encyclopedia guru and bassist Jaimie Vernon, “Cats Can’t Fly” is culled from their just-released second album, What’s The Stouray. The song’s about recognizing when a relationship is biting the dust. Despite the downbeat theme, the song has a wicked melodic hook, beautiful keyboard work from another fine friend, Rob Preuss (ex-Spoons, Honeymoon Suite), and stellar harmonies. If you enjoy rock bands like The Wallflowers, Men at Work or Sloan, then “Cats Can’t Fly” is for you. If you buy “Cats Can’t Fly” on Bandcamp, you’ll get another song with it for free. Oh, and about the song title? Canadian music fans will undoubtedly remember the Toronto band Cats Can Fly for their 1986 domestic hit “Flippin’ To The ‘A’ Side”…

STEVEN THAD, “Find My Way”

In his charming lo-fi way, Washington DC area singer/songwriter Steven Thad is consistent with his approach to releasing his original music. Focusing on vocals, story, and harmonies goes a long way and “Find My Way”, from his debut album Love, R&B, is a refreshing winner. It’s about learning and making changes that work for you in order to reach your destiny. In the song, Steven turns a negative into a positive, and hope is something that so many people need to hear in the music they enjoy. “Find My Way” is the highlight of the album, which also features songs I’ve written about, “Goodbye Farewell” and “Do You Remember”, as well as a cover of Destiny’s Child’s “Free”.

TONY ROMERA and BILLY VALENTINE, “Tonight’s The Night”

“Tonight’s The Night” is a classy, feel-good, fast-paced house track that’s brought to you by Lyon, France native and producer Tony Romera. As a big bonus, he’s utilized the slick voice of veteran R&B and jazz singer Billy Valentine, who you know not only from being one half of the Valentine Brothers (they recorded the original version of Simply Red’s “Money$ Too Tight (To Mention)”), but also the familiar voice of so many cover versions that graced TV’s “Sons of Anarchy”. Together, and as they should, they will keep your body moving in some shape or form in “Tonight’s The Night”.

ASHWYN and NATALIE, “Pink Skies”

India-born, USA-based multi-talent Ashwyn returns with a new EP called Skar, which features “Pink Skies”, a crisp and dreamy new pop track. Vocalist Natalie gives “Pink Skies” a really personal sound amid an imaginative setting, with lots of layered harmonies. Adding in some dazzling guitar magic from Ashwyn makes “Pink Skies” that much more memorable. The Skar EP also features Ashwyn’s single from last year, “Feelings of Yesterday”, which is also worth revisiting for its intriguing arrangement and impressive guitar work.

SIERRA BLAX and CHRISTOPHER WATSON, “Control”

If you enjoy your R&B/pop on the mellow side, the music of Sierra Blax on her new EP BRB…I’m Daydreaming is tailored for you. The L.A.-based, Kaua’i born singer/songwriter has a gentle tone which is given an uncomplicated mix to accentuate the authentic rawness in “Control”. The song seems to portray a couple who are totally into each other but want to wrestle away control from the other, at least in the romance department. It’s a duet with Tampa, Florida singer Christopher Watson, who adds a complimentary graceful turn and makes “Control” go down quite easily.
