BILLCS Top 30 #455 – April 20/15 warning: chart geekery afoot!

I’m going to have a bit of fun indulging in chart geekery, i.e. fascinating chart facts and figures about performers on my chart who have previously charted in the 16+ years of the chart.

Aside from that there is a bonus – there are 4 of my fellow Canadian performers in the Top 10 😀

The Top 10

Aside from #1, all of the songs are on the rise!  This will make it a bit difficult in two weeks to find out if any songs advance into the Top 10 at all!

  • First we have highly touted UK trio Years & Years with “King”, which gets a second appearance at #1.  Their album Communion is coming soon, and the only other appearance they’ve had on my chart is current – previous single “Desire” is at #14.  Had I heard The Magician’s “Sunlight” (which features Years & Years) at time of release it would have charted but there’s just so much out there…

  • Canadians Corey Niles and Alex Lacasse advance to #2 with the compelling and emotional “Chasing Stars”.  I do hope this will be the first domestic radio hit for both!

  • Canadian quartet Smashing Satellites move up to #3 with “Waterfall”.  That’s great news on the eve of their anthemic new single “What’s It All About”, which I wrote about recently.  The band’s previous entry “Hounds” got to #16 earlier this year.  They are playing Canadian Music Week on May 8 at the Phoenix in Toronto.

  • Jessie Ware’s “Champagne Kisses” rises 5-4.  I snuck Jessie on to my chart as a part of the UK reissue of Miguel’s “Adorn” in 2013, which got to #1.  Her subsequent single “Say You Love Me” also got to #1, followed by the album track “Pieces” which peaked at #3.

  • My favourite song from Erasure’s album The Velvet Rope, “Sacred” climbs 11-5.  Their previous single “Reason” topped out at #4.  The rest of their BILLCS chart history (all Top 10 🙂 ):

  • The fastest riser on the chart is “No Talk” by Toronto’s River Tiber, which has been sampled by Drake in his song “No Tellin'” from the album If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late.  River Tiber also released another song which could be a companion piece to “No Talk” called “Motives” (also above).  But I’ve been on the River Tiber tip since 2012 as below:

  • Eric Saade has had several chart entries since 2011, and his punchy latest is Melodifestivalen entry “Sting”, at #10.

Movin’ on Up

  • Sam Smith’s gorgeous “Lay Me Down” moves 15-11.  Now that’s been a stumbling peak for two of Sam’s recent songs, so we’ll see if the Top 10 has room for “Lay Me Down” in two weeks.

  • While Brandyn Burnette’s former #1 “Sleeve” slides to #16, his first appearance on my chart was with “Thanks For Nothing”, which peaked at #4 for 4 appearances (8 weeks)!

  • The BILLCS chart history of Canada’s R&B queen Jully Black goes back the furthest than any other performer on the chart.  She plays a show at the Phoenix in Toronto on May 5.  Her new single “Fever” – her first chart entry since 2007 – rises to #19.

New To The Chart

  •  Reading between the lines of my posts about the single and album, it’s no surprise that Australia’s Parralox debuts with “Aeronaut” at #20.  John von Ahlen and team have visited the chart before though!

  • They would have been all over my chart in the 70’s, but disco group Chic, with creator Nile Rodgers, arrives for the first time on my chart with the discotastic “I’ll Be There” at #25.  Nile was a part of the Grammy-winning Daft Punk hit “Get Lucky” of course, which peaked at #2 in 2013.

  • At #26 is a somewhat overdue chart debut for Sweden’s Erik Hassle.  His “No Words” is perfect pop/R&B confection with an upbeat tempo masking a sad song.  It arrives at #26.

  • Lastly at #30 is “Hey Now” by that fun duo from Brooklyn, Matt & Kim, who I will be seeing in concert again on May 18.  Their new album New Glow recently dropped and it nicely bridges the no holds barred entertainment that the duo brings with a bit more emotion this time, especially noted affection for each other, notably in “Hey Now” and its video 🙂

Defining ‘throwback’: @GiorgioMoroder and @Sia deliver “Deja Vu”

The first Giorgio Moroder album in 30 years, now called Deja Vu, is one of the most anticipated records for me for 2015, and it arrives in June, featuring contributions from Britney Spears, Mikky Ekko, Matthew Koma, Foxes, Charli XCX, and others.  After the success of his pairing with Kylie Minogue on “Right Here Right Now” (which peaked at #4 on my chart) comes the title song with vocal by Sia.  To me this is as much of a throwback to Giorgio’s classic records of the 70’s, and Sia sometimes has amazing flourishes in her voice that sound heavily inspired by Donna Summer.  Perhaps it’s not as adventurous or over-the-top sounding as Sia’s songs from her own album, but like Chic’s “I’ll Be There”, “Deja Vu” is an airy, danceable paean to the happy era where people were content to dance the night away.  I’m hoping that “Deja Vu” will light up radio station ears too – not to be missed!

EDM treasure trove: 11 songs by @Parralox on “Aeronaut”

You’ve already read my recent rave blog post about the New Order-meets-Human League flavoured title song from Australian duo Parralox’s latest Aeronaut (featuring backup vox by the other member of Parralox, singer Johanna Gervin).  And John von Ahlen is one busy guy, with another record called Subculture coming later in the year.  Wearing both 80’s inspiration and today’s technology on his sleeve, John incorporates his original style with far too many elements and sounds of the last three and a half decades or so to identify.  And it makes Aeronaut a pleasure to hear (and dance to!) throughout.  

Right after John’s remix of “Aeronaut” comes “Atmosphere”, which is going to take you back music and sound-wise to the days of Frankie Goes To Hollywood and Trevor Horn indulgences.  It’s got a huge boom to it and could easily mashup with “Relax” or “Two Tribes”!  “Do You Feel What I Feel” happily channels industrial dance of the 80’s reminiscent of Front 242 or Nitzer Ebb, while the lighter “Mystery” is right up Thompson Twins territory.  “Somebody II” (in original ballad or dance remix form) is a perfect companion to Depeche Mode’s own “Somebody”.  And the album closes off with the innovative and progressive instrumental “Zero”, which stands beautifully next to such recent releases as Giorgio Moroder’s “74 Is The New 24” or Pet Shop Boys’ “Axis”.  

So if you long for the halcyon 80’s days or are interested in hearing songs outside of the mainstream but essential for clubs, then Aeronaut is for you!  Well done to John and Parralox, and Subculture will definitely have my attention when it arrives!  Check out the beautifully shot video for “Aeronaut” above (ahhhhh Paris how I miss you!).

Dance music bliss pairs @DJMirkoB with @AntonEwald for “Higher”

Well this fortunate pairing came somewhat out of the blue, but works like a dream.  Italian producer DJ Mirko B features Sweden’s current golden boy Anton Ewald on “Higher”.  The song has already made significant dents in the European dance market, and by all rights North America shouldn’t be far behind (though the song doesn’t appear to be available in Canada yet).  It’s high arpeggio-laden progressive Italo-disco that will easily have dance club patrons jumping.  But the song is more accessible than that – it will have you immediately recalling recent releases by the likes of Nervo, Nicky Romero, or even Calvin Harris.  “Higher” deserves to be a smash – well done to both fine talents for putting it together.  Watch the lyric video above.

Disco Blast: The Return of @CHICorg featuring @NileRodgers with “I’ll Be There”

First, Giorgio Moroder gets signed back to a major record label (RCA) to release his upcoming album 74 Is The New 24.  Now, following hot on the heels of his success with Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” comes eminent guitarist/producer Nile Rodgers and CHIC with “I’ll Be There” (courtesy of Warner Bros).  

Nile of course has never been away from the music scene, and with the loss of Bernard Edwards many years ago, it was hard to fathom a return of the CHIC brand to pop music.  But timing is everything and Nile and CHIC are out to influence a new generation of dance music fans with the timeless, trademark sound that brought us not only “Le Freak” but classic R&B/dance songs such as “Dance Dance Dance (Yowsah Yowsah Yowsah)”, “Everybody Dance”, the much-sampled “CHIC Cheer”, and “I Want Your Love”.  The video seamlessly intersperses clips of old TV dance shows (my generation’s version of reality TV, now pretty much a thing of the past) with Nile and his troupe of talented performers who flawlessly recreate CHIC.  All we’d need would be some vocals by Luther Vandross…  

“I’ll Be There” is sheer old school fun but meant for anyone who wants to discover great music and the happy spirit that disco music brought to the world.  More CHIC, please!!

GIORGIO MORODER featuring KYLIE MINOGUE, “Right Here Right Now”

The ever-amazing Giorgio Moroder teased us late last year with the title instrumental song from his upcoming album 74 Is The New 24.  And after having appeared at many dance/EDM events last year, he’s following up his work on the Grammy Award-winning Daft Punk album Random Access Memories with more collaborations, which are rumoured to include Britney Spears, Sia, Mikky Ekko, Foxes, and others.  Last week, his pairing with Kylie Minogue on “Right Here Right Now” surfaced and you can hear it right here on Kylieblog.com.  Like Daft Punk’s chart takeover in 2013 with “Get Lucky”, I would not underestimate Giorgio’s collaborations as they will bring a whole new dimension to the dance/pop played on the radio largely in the David Guetta and Calvin Harris molds.  “Right Here Right Now” brings a trademark Giorgio Moroder disco sound full circle, and how he produces Kylie’s voice on this song is like nothing you’ve ever heard from the singer.  I think the song gets a little too busy with effects competing with Kylie’s voice at times, but in its memorable chorus the song just soars.  74 Is The New 24 will be a must-hear for pop music fans.

Don’t It Now: “Feels So Good” the New Album by XavierToscano (@XToscano)

XAVIER TOSCANO, Feels So Good

Feels So Good is a fine start for California pop/EDM singer Xavier Toscano.  It’s a diverse album that slides easily between the pop, EDM, classic dance, and R&B/hip hop genres.  There is no doubt that Xavier lives by the title of the album.  It’s full of honest and inspiring music that will put a bounce into your day!  The single “Never Wanna Leave” (video below) is a good introduction to showcase Xavier’s crisp voice and the slick production that is sunk into each song.  I think what should be next though is to get dance clubs on board with the engaging update of Sylvester’s 1978 disco classic “You Make Me Feel Mighty Real”.  Club DJ’s should devour it silly as Xavier puts his own vocal spin on it (way too hard to outdo Sylvester!) while the producers keep the disco essence and channel Giorgio Moroder and Cerrone retro sounds a the contemporary rendition.  “Runaway” borrows a repeated keyboard riff idea from M83’s “Midnight City” and it makes “Runaway” memorable.  “Watch Out It’s On” is loaded with energy, while the sensitive ballad “Castles In The Sky” slows it down.  And then “Naz-T-Nice”, “Unstoppable Fever” and “Make It Look Easy” dip heavily into R&B and hip hop.  While not all of the songs work, there is plenty to enjoy on Feels So Good.  Xavier’s hard-working, fun and earnest personality shines through, and the attentive production guides the songs through a promising and fulfilling album.   You can listen to the album on Xavier’s website or through Reverb Nation, and then get it on iTunes.

BILLCS Top 30 #445 – December 1, 2014

In some ways the past month or so has plodded along, no thanks to two different bouts of viral illnesses, and then suddenly two weeks go by and it’s time for a new personal chart 🙂

The Top 10

  • There’s no budging Jessie Ware and Mikky Ekko from #1 and #2.  “Say You Love Me” holds for a second appearance at number one as the singer is about to release “You & I (Forever)” as the follow up single and video from her amazing Tough Love album.  “Smile” by Mikky Ekko preceded “Say You Love Me” at #1 and holds tight in anticipation of his debut album Time, due in January.
  • Last edition’s high flying debut is also this edition’s fastest riser on the chart.  Color Theory (aka Brian Hazard) has concocted one of those songs to which you can relate so easily with “Headphones”.  The original mix is up top for your listening pleasure, but do check out the slick Matt Mancid retro crossover remix too right here, well worth purchasing.  “Headphones” glides up the chart 18-3 and will contend for #1 in the coming month.
  • Semi-Precious Weapons slide into #5 with “Brando”, their unconventional love song from an upcoming album.  It’s gone quiet about what’s next for the band in terms of the album release but I’m certain something grand is in the works!

  • “The Voice” underdog from last season, Jake Barker, rises to #6 with the title song from his EP Stage Fright.  Jake has many cover songs on You Tube, including his rendition of Ed Sheeran’s “Photograph”.  Check it out above.
  • The more I listen to “Losing You” by Jane Badler (9-7), the more detail I hear each time.  It’s just one of those hypnotic songs that doesn’t want to let go, from her recent album Opus.
  • Two dance club zingers join the Top 10.  Bright Light Bright Light continues his long line of Top Tenners on this chart with “Arms Of Another” at #8, from the EP An Open Heart.  Then the powerhouse trio of Sander van Doorn, Martin Garrix, and DVBBS lands at #9 with “Gold Skies”.  And while the main vocal is by singer Aleesia, to me it’s the male vocal chorus that is most affecting about this song and just makes you want to jam out!

Movin’ On Up

  • So it appears that Sam Smith’s “Restart” was just a video release!  It climbs 13-11 in a year when he has been nary off my chart (if at all) since “Money On My Mind” bowed earlier in the year.  The new single is the buoyant “Like I Can”, which will take him well into 2015 and long past any Grammy Awards which will find their way to him.
  • Get your New Year’s playlist ready and be sure to include “Goin’ Down” by Deniz Koyu vs Twoloud, sure to make your crowd go BOOOM!  It climbs 21-12.
  • Erasure’s “Reason” is from their latest album The Violet Flame and it has designs on the Top 10, rising 19-13.
  • Tristan Thompson’s “Burn Again” is receiving scorching action at radio in Canada, already #24 on the AC Airplay chart and it’s also entered the Top 40 radio chart too.  Not bad for an independent release from a very talented 16 year old.  Next stop:  USA 🙂  “Burn Again” climbs 20-16.
  • We have always got “Time” till Steve Grand’s album is released in early 2015.  This delightful story is off to a super start, rising 23-17.

  • Lorde certainly dazzled us with her kinetic performance of “Yellow Flicker Beat” (above) last week on the American Music Awards.  As a result I think this song will get a second look by radio, and it moves up in this edition 24-20.
  • “Calling You” by Penguin Prison continues the many chart appearances here for NYC singer/songwriter/producer/DJ Chris Glover, as it rises 26-21.
  • Smashing Satellites gave a powerful performance opening for Moist last week in Toronto.  The quartet will soon be headlining its own mid-sized club venues judging by audience response.  In the meantime, “Hounds” climbs 30-25.

New to the Chart

I’ve already gushed about each of these songs in blog posts over the past few weeks, so it’s no surprise to see them chart so quickly.

  • Reigen’s soulful and emotional EDM ballad “Come Back With Me” is simple food for your musical soul, and debuts at #22 for the New York based singer.
  • It’s her first appearance on my chart in 10 years, but the unmistakable Kristine W. is back in full force with “Love Come Home”, a redux of an early UK hit for her.  It makes a memorable impact, recalling her Land Of The Living days, and arrives at #23.  It has also landed in the Top 5 of the Billboard Dance Club Play chart this past week, and I hope DJ’s will send it to the top.  And if you buy the EP, it contains no less than 14 remixes!
  • While “Zeppelin” leaves the chart, Eli Lieb has perhaps gone even one better with the feel good story and vibe of “Lightning In A Bottle”, which lands at #27.  And do I hear an album is forthcoming in 2015?  Even more to which we can look forward!

To Eternity: “74 Is The New 24” by @GiorgioMoroder

Even at 74, there is no taking dance music and its current technology out of Giorgio Moroder.  The pace was set after becoming part of the project that ended up as Daft Punk’s Grammy-winning Random Access Memories last year, and Giorgio has been remixing songs by the likes of Coldplay and appearing as a DJ at events around the world.  So almost 40 years after creating some of the greatest dance music ever – Donna Summer’s biggest records including the revolutionary “I Feel Love”; Blondie’s “Call Me”; his own “Chase” (from his Oscar-winning score of “Midnight Express”) and “From Here To Eternity”; Oscar-winning “Flashdance…What A Feeling” by Irene Cara and “Take My Breath Away” by Berlin; and lesser known but beloved “Together In Electric Dreams” with Philip Oakey of The Human League, and “Life In Tokyo” by Japan – Giorgio Moroder is once again about to trail-blaze with a new album, rumoured to feature Britney Spears, Sia, Kylie Minogue, Charli XCX, Foxes, Mikky Ekko, and Matthew Koma, among others.  In advance of that, he’s given us the propulsive “74 Is The New 24”, whose title is I believe based on something Giorgio said in an interview not long ago.  That it reminds me a lot of Pet Shop Boys’ “Axis” from last year’s Electric is almost like the creator giving a big nod to those that he influenced.  But when you think about it, “74 Is The New 24” likely reminds you most of Giorgio Moroder in his heyday – big, powerful synths and effects used to their maximum and most contemporary, sounding as innovative as ever.  Just can’t wait for the album!  One to watch for 2015 for sure. And I keep saying about why I’m still writing about music – age ain’t nuthin’ but a number 🙂

I absolutely adore Bright Light Bright Light’s “An Open Heart”.  It’s one of my favourite songs by Rod Thomas, and it was already #1 on my personal chart for 4 appearances (8 weeks) at the top of the year, previously featured on the EP In Your Care.  “An Open Heart” is also featured on the album Life Is Easy, and is the new single from it, so I’m hoping international doors will open even more for Bright Light Bright Light with it.  But featured on the single release is another fantastic BLx2 song that you just can’t miss.  It’s quintessential BLx2, drawing specifically from the keyboard hook and house rhythm of “Gypsy Woman (She’s Homeless)” by Crystal Waters.  It’s a joyous choice of music, set to lyrics of resignation when you find that the one you care for prefers someone else.  So be sure to pick up the full single release tomorrow on iTunes and you will not only get the single and 12″ versions of “An Open Heart” but this new gem “Arms Of Another” too (preview).
