Eurohouse flair shines through in “Moves” by #BigFish featuring @MikeGomesmusic

BIG FISH featuring MIKE GOMES, “Moves”

If you like your tropical house with add Euro flair, then you will particularly enjoy “Moves” by Italy’s Big Fish for Tipsy Recordings.  Though the artist is new, the song does a great job of selling itself with its totally engaging melody and slick production.  It also has this vibrant vocal by Mike Gomes of American duo Xuitcasecity – not an entirely unexpected place for Mike to show up, as you’ll remember Xuitcasecity’s memorable presence last year on “Runaway” by Spirix.  “Moves” is an easy add for club DJ’s who want to encourage their audience to strut their stuff rather than simply watch the DJ at work.  Check it out at the link above.

#BILLCSTop30 #525 – December 25/17

In my last chart of 2017, there’s a new #1 by a performer who is now dominating the chart, as well as five debuts that will make heading into 2018 a lot brighter 🙂

The Top 10

  • It’s Miguel who takes over at #1 with “Pineapple Skies” (above) from the stellar War & Leisure album.  It’s Miguel’s second #1 following 2013’s “Adorn”.  He also rises 6-3 with his laid back collab with Travis Scott on “Sky Walker” (below) and gets one of the five debuts at #25 with the ever-so-Prince-worthy “Told You So” (also below).  2018 is going to be fabulous for Miguel, and I look forward to seeing his show in March!

https://soundcloud.com/shoffymusic/flags-feat-yuna

  • L.A.’s Shoffy has one of the best songs of the year with the pensive “Flags”, featuring Yuna, which holds at #2 from his enjoyable self-titled album.
  • Toronto’s Dzeko soars into the Top 5 from 16-5 with his brilliant retro-techno cover of Seal’s “Crazy” in a Tiësto Big Room mix.
  • YEBBA is a new talent to watch for in 2018.  As far as I know she’s still an unsigned commodity but that will not be for long 🙂  Her first single “Evergreen” (above) climbs 13-7 while her duet with Sam Smith on “No Peace” (below) from The Thrill Of It All moves 17-15.
  • The pairing of producer SAINT WKND and singer MAX for “Survive” is a killer combination as the song rises 11-8 in its fab PLS&TY remix.  It’s MAX’s 5th appearance in the Top 10 overall as either lead or featured vocalist.

  • Toronto’s dynamic duo Loud Luxury score their third consecutive Top 10 with “Body”, featuring a fantastic, earthy vocal by Brando.  It climbs 18-9.

Movin’ On Up

  • The fastest riser on the chart, not surprisingly, is the genuine dance pop of “Small Talk” by new trio Giiants, which soars 23-11.  I’m going to keep the mystery alive about Giiants for now and all will be revealed in 2018 as to who is behind this excellent project.

  • Nora En Pure’s dance floor filler “Tears In Your Eyes” rises 19-13, one of the best emotional dance pop tunes around to make you swirl away to those rich synth sounds.
  • One of my favourite parts of “Right Now” by Toronto’s Ryan Shepherd featuring Dirty Hary is the punchy and layered beginning, which leaves you hooked for the rest of the song.  “Right Now” moves up 20-14.
  • It’s inspiring and set to a deliberate, almost funky pace, but California duo waitwhat have a winner with “Alive” climbing 26-17 and featuring a stunning vocal by Rielle.

4 More Debuts

  • It’s definitely a pattern – creative synth work and a passionate vocal – that drives “What We’re Made Of” by NYC producer Dave Edwards featuring London-based singer Mark Asari to debut at #19.  It’s one of the best and most fervent songs around heading into 2018, and has the potential to be another “This Is What It Feels Like” by Armin van Buuren.
  • It’s gentle and good-natured with a buoyant electronic melodic hook, so “You Found Me” by German production duo Saxity featuring NYC-based singer Victor Perry arrives at #21 as a free download.  It’s Saxity’s second entry following the #3 “Brothers” (and members Koni and Stan Sax have charted separately too), and Victor’s fourth appearance following #4 “Missing”, #7 “Rainbows”, and his #3 “Sail” with another German producer Levi.

  • L.A. based singer/songwriter Axel Mansoor is just finishing up a run on the chart with the #12 “Hit Rewind”, and for his fourth entry this year it’s “Talk To Me” at #22, whose video features a cute story with an ending that will leave you thinking.  Axel’s “Wasted My Love” and “Out Of My Head” will both figure prominently in my upcoming year end list 🙂
  • British singer Mika returns to the chart for the first time in almost exactly five years with the bubbly and all-inclusive message of “It’s My House” at #27, his 10th overall entry.  He’s the real deal as I’ve seen in concert and should never be underestimated even if his last album really did not win me over.  He’s been to #1 once on this chart, with “Rain” in 2010 from my favourite album by him, The Boy Who Knew Too Much.

In lieu of the online version, here’s the full chart:

#BILLCSTop30 #524 – December 11, 2017

This is the second last chart for me of 2017, and is also blog post 1,701!!

The five entries from two weeks ago make distinct impressions, causing some songs to stop rising or to fall.  As a result too there are only two new songs on the chart.

Two weeks ago I was in a rush to get the blog post up and for the first time didn’t post song links.  With this post the song links are back 🙂

The Top 10

https://soundcloud.com/latchmeresound/need-your-heart

  • The classic house of Latchmere’s “Need Your Heart” (above) is enough to keep it up top for a third appearance, guaranteeing it a high placing on my year end list, which will be posted before year’s end.  Latchmere also bookends the Top 10, with “Monster” (featuring Dylan, below)) climbing a notch to #10.

https://soundcloud.com/latchmeresound/monster-featuring-dylan

https://soundcloud.com/shoffymusic/flags-feat-yuna

  • Shoffy’s delightful, thoughtful “Flags” (featuring Yuna, above) rises 3-2 but will be in a battle for the top in two weeks.  Also check out the video for his song “Motions”  (below) from his self-titled album.

  • The powerhouse on the chart though is Miguel, from one of the finest albums of 2017, War and Leisure, with “Pineapple Skies” (above) the fastest riser tearing up the chart 27-3, even surpassing “Sky Walker” (featuring Travis Scott, below), which is still moving up 8-6.  I can’t wait to hear it all in concert in March 🙂

  • Alyx Ander’s “Wake Up For The Night” (featuring Caroline Pennell) surpasses the #5 peak of Alyx’s “Memories Of You” from earlier this year, climbing 6-4.
  • The Him get their third Top 10 song on this chart with the gorgeous and emotional “Everybody Hurts”, featuring Australian singer Ivy Adara, rising 15-9, and it’s still available as a free download!  Big things coming for The Him in 2018!!

Movin’ On Up

  • New York-based British singer YEBBA continues her rising double presence on the chart with the unique and lovely “Evergreen” up 18-13 (above), and her duet with Sam Smith from The Thrill Of It All “No Peace” also climbing 23-17 (below).

  • Don’t forget to check out the fun animated lyric video for “Free” by singer/actor Carlos Nóbrega featuring JVEL from the fine album The Art Of Making Love, up a notch to #15.
  • Dzeko’s biiiig sounding cover of Seal’s “Crazy” in its Tiësto Big Room remix gets trapped mid-chart and moves up 21-16, but watch out in two weeks…

  • The other trio of deep house songs to debut two weeks ago follow each other up the chart.  Loud Luxury’s “Body” (featuring Brando, above) just debuted on Billboard’s Dance Club Play chart and rises 28-18.  Nora En Pure’s luscious and emotional “Tears In Your Eyes” (below) is up 29-19, while Ryan Shepherd’s down and dirty “Right Now” (featuring Dirty Hary, also below)  is right behind climbing 30-20.

Debuts

  • My 1,700th blog post belonged to “Small Talk” by Giiants, a great danceable pop song to watch for in 2018, with more to come from the talented trio and the other artists they are involving in this project.  “Small Talk” arrives two days after official release at #23.
  • L.A.’s waitwhat became a duo earlier this year, which was a real turning point for Troy Skinner’s original project.  With the addition of Damon Dokhani, they complemented each other’s strengths, and after some interesting remixes they arrived at an infectious original “Alive”, featuring vocalist Rielle.  “Alive” premieres at #26.

Planet Radio Canada is on hiatus and will return http://www.planetradio.ca 🙂

#BILLCSTop30 #523 – November 27/17

There’s lots of movement on the new chart, plus five debuts, three of which are Canadian, which constitutes a mini-takeover 😛  The top of the chart pretty much stays put as other newer songs get closer.

The Top 10

  • The top of the chart is still grooving to old school Chicago-styled house as mixed with contemporary electronic pop.  It’s once again “Need Your Heart”, brought to you by Australia-based UK producer Latchmere from his EP Lovedrunk.  Zooming in on the Top 10 is another song from the EP “Monster”, featuring Aussie female vocalist Dylan, zipping up the chart 18-11.
  • Shoffy’s thoughtful-with-a-beat “Flags” (featuring) looks like it will give “Need Your Heart” the most competition at #1, as the single from his debut self-titled album climbs 5-3.
  • The unbridled energy and attitude of “No Hands” sends it into the Top 5 for the collaboration of producers it’s different and Forever MC, and lethal vocal combo of blackbear and MAX.  It’s too bad the song has never seen official release but is still available as a free download.
  • Making its presence known in the Top 10 for the first time is “Wake Up To The Night” by Miami’s Alyx Ander featuring The Voice top ten contestant and songwriter Caroline Pennell, rising 11-6.
  • US/UK duo Culpriit also move up within the Top 10 with “Driveway” climbing 10-7.
  • The new cool word is “splish”.  Miguel and Travis Scott claim #8 with “Sky Walker” from the upcoming War & Leisure album.  Miguel also nabs one of the five debuts further down…
  • The Thrill Of It All is a beautiful follow up to In The Lonely Hour, a completely different kind of album where the best songs are the ones you won’t hear on the radio, aside of course from “Too Good At Goodbyes”, which moves up 13-9.  You’ll find Sam’s duet with star-on-the-rise YEBBA at #23 with “No Peace”.

Movin’ On Up

  • We have more MAX in his pairing with SAINT WKND on “Survive” rising 19-13 in a fierce PLS&TY remix that totally gets the vibe of the song.
  • Dutch duo The Him look to get to the Top 10 quickly with “Everybody Hurts”, a free download for you featuring Australian singer Ivy Adara, which soars 24-15.
  • A second entry for producer/songwriter Frank Pierce jumps 25-17, “Do Me” featuring vocalist Miles B.  You won’t be able to sit still with the buoyant rhythm of this one. Frank still sits pretty at #4 with pals Nick Peters and Scott Vega with “No Love In Brooklyn”.
  • The fastest riser on the chart is from the aforementioned British singer YEBBA (aka Abbey Smith) with her debut single “Evergreen” rocketing up the chart 29-18.  Patiently waiting for more news about YEBBA!
  • “Murder” is an infectious slice of deep house from Dutch producer/DJ Lady Bee featuring fellow producer Tropkillaz and standout vocalist Oktavian.  It climbs 23-20.

Five Debuts

  • The high point of Tiësto’s Club Life Vol. 5 – China album comes early on with Toronto’s own Dzeko scoring with potent cover of Seal’s 90’s hit “Crazy” in a Tiësto Big Room mix, which charges on to the chart at #21.  Tiësto has appeared numerous times on this chart, the last time with his remix of “Let You Go” by The Chainsmokers and Great Good Fine OK in 2015.  Dzeko has only had one prior appearance, but it was a doozy – a #1 in 2016 with buddy Luis Torres as well as Sweden’s Hellberg with “Care For Me”, my #2 song of last year.
  • It’s Miguel again at #27 with “Pineapple Skies”, which revels in the music of Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder so much that it’s just plain joyful!
  • Song #2 on the chart for Toronto’s Loud Luxury premieres at #28 with new vocalist Brando in the irresistible “Body” (this time for Armada).  The duo has had two #1’s this year with “Fill Me In” (with Ryan Shepherd) and “Show Me” (with Nikki’s Wives) – will “Body” be next?
  • It immediately got under my skin when I first heard it two weeks ago, so Swiss/South African producer/DJ Nora En Pure’s “Tears In Your Eyes” arrives on the chart at #29.
  • A third Torontonian bows on the chart this week, and it is indeed the previously mentioned Ryan Shepherd, whose amazing new slice of deep house “Right Now” (featuring Dirty Hary) bows at #30.

“Desensitize” is smooth R&B-house featuring @Ayellemusic from NYC duo @Opvsmusic who also remix @AllieX’s “Paper Love”

https://soundcloud.com/opvs/desensitize-feat-ayelle

OPVS featuring AYELLE, “Desensitize” (free DL)

ALLIE X, “Paper Love” (Opvs remix) (free DL)

Opvs is a NYC duo of Sean Squires and Dan Valente most noted for some successful flips and partnerships (particularly with producer/remixer ye.) during the last year which got them noticed to the likes of Martin Garrix and DJ Snake for playlist adds.  The duo returns with an original silky-smooth slice of R&B-influenced house called “Desensitize” featuring Swedish/Iranian singer Ayelle.  “Desensitize” has a slick flow to help present its message along with a loopy set of keyboard riffs to help make it stand out.  Opvs also recently remixed Allie X’s “Paper Love” which manages to still go big on melody without going over-the-top with unnecessary drops, which is very complimentary to the song.  Check out “Desensitize” above and “Paper Love” below, and get ’em for free while you can.

https://soundcloud.com/opvs/allie-x-paper-love-opvs-remix-7

Slow burn: @SeanSmithsolo’s “Fire” tantalizes

SEAN SMITH, “Fire”

UK singer (and former member of Same Difference) Sean Smith follows up the bold and sexy “Magic” (which recently got to #7 on my chart in its Andy Sikorski remix) with something more taut called “Fire”.  Co-written by that amazing twosome of Charlie Mason and Daniel Volpe and set to a snappy house rhythm, “Fire” takes the slow burn approach.  It starts off quiet and mysterious and lingers a bit before making its point.  Sean’s diverse vocal makes a fine song even that much better.  Keep “Fire” on that music burner long enough and you’ll feel it in your bones 🙂  Enough plays on words – check out the lyrics video at the link up top.

“Aarti” by @therealShishi is a gentle fusion of Bollywood, House and Disco

SHISHI, “Aarti”

ShiShi is an American singer of Indian heritage who aims to fuse dance music styles for a universal appeal.  “Aarti” is an auspicious introduction, perhaps using A.R. Rahman’s music inspiration from “Slumdog Millionaire” as a familiar jumping off point to draw you into its sultry and persuasive melody.  The song fuses Bollywood, house and disco in a gentle but memorable way and you’ll be humming it long after it’s over.  “Aarti” is something a little different for you but it will fit easily into a mid-tempo house set, and will appeal to fans of Mura Masa and Klingande among others.  As a side campaign, after introducing “Aarti” on Diwali, ShiShi is pledging $1 for every share of this Facebook post: bit.ly/diwalishishi to the literacy and learning programs of Pratham, a successful educational organization in India.  Share away and check out “Aarti” at the link above.

#BILLCSTop30 #521, October 30/17

In edition #521 of the chart, you’ll be seeing double in some cases as a couple of performers already on the chart get debuts, plus there’s a new #1 that’s been winding its way patiently up the chart 🙂

The Top 10

  • L.A.’s Mahalo along with his go-to singer Cat Lewis get their first collective #1 with the gritty deep house of “Perfect”.  It’s a real producing feat as Mahalo manipulates Cat’s voice to sound like there are multiple vocalists, and I particularly enjoy the segue at the beginning from high register to distorted low vocal.

  • Lauv’s “I Like Me Better” has generated a full blown tour with stops in most major cities through the start of the new year, with dates already selling out.  Damn. I guess a lot of other folks like this guy.  “I Like Me Better” holds at #3.

https://soundcloud.com/latchmeresound/need-your-heart

  • It looks like Latchmere’s “Need Your Heart” (above) has its eye on the top spot as it zips into the Top 5 at #4.  It’s from his diverse mainly house-oriented EP Lovedrunk.  The Australia-based producer also has the highest debut on the chart as the Hallowe’en appropriate “Monster” (below) arrives at #22 featuring a fabulous vocal by a female Aussie singer named Dylan.

https://soundcloud.com/latchmeresound/monster-featuring-dylan

  • Continuing with double-duty carried over from the last chart, Carlos Nóbrega’s “You (It’s All About You)” (above) surges 10-7, while another song from The Art Of Making Love, “Free” (below), a duet more-or-less with Spanish vocalist JVEL, climbs 27-21.

  • The audio equivalent of a great big warm hug, “We Won’t Leave You” by Steve Void partnering with Syence, moves up 11-9.
  • While I’m glad it’s still available as a free download, “No Hands” by the incredible collaboration of producers it’s different and Forever MC with fantastic vocals by blackbear and MAX really deserves an official release on iTunes and Spotify.  It bounds to #10 from #18.  MAX is featured on one of the three debuts too!

Movin’ On Up

https://soundcloud.com/shoffymusic/flags-feat-yuna

  • The fastest riser on the chart is flying high at #11.  Moving up from #20 is “Flags” by L.A.’s Shoffy featuring singer Yuna, a beautiful pairing with a solid message perfect for our time.  It’s from Shoffy’s excellent self-titled debut album.
  • A Remixes EP – featuring Tom & Collins, Parx, and Limits – is now out for Bobby Nourmand’s “MIND” featuring DOC & Goodmorning, which moves up a notch 13-12.
  • It looks like a hit, and sounds like a hit.  Maybe there’s some 70’s AM radio influences buried deep inside of “Hit Rewind” but regardless Axel Mansoor and Louis Vivet take it 26-19 on the chart.

Two remaining debuts

  • Did you say MAX again?  The recent release of “Survive” by yet another L.A. based producer, SAINT WKND also features such potent vocals by our MAX that it bows at #24 in its PLS&TY remix.  I’m definitely excited to see MAX in concert again this coming Wednesday 😀
  • The remaining debut has been around for a few months but I can’t get its riveting bassline out of my head when played loud on my stereo.  It’s “Murder” by Dutch producer/DJ Lady Bee featuring Tropkillaz and the fabulous vocal of Oktavian, who got to #2 on the chart last year featured in The Him’s “Balance”.  “Murder” premieres at #26.

Remixing the remixers: @TwoFriendsmusic remix @TheChainsmokers and get remixed by Poland’s @Clarxpl

THE CHAINSMOKERS, “Break Up Every Night” (Two Friends remix)

TWO FRIENDS featuring JAMES DELANEY, “Emily” (Clarx remix)

While the ever-good-natured L.A. producers/remixers Two Friends (Matt and Eli) keep busy touring, producing their own songs, and remixing those by others, one of the guys’ recent songs in turn has been remixed.

I wasn’t quite sure why “Honest” by The Chainsmokers became the follow-up single to “Something Just Like This”, but the much better “Break Up Every Night” appears to be next, pumped by a number of remixes.  Two Friends give it a fun and zingy remix that helps capture the exaggerated nature of the song, which is actually a co-write with more L.A. denizens, Captain Cuts.  Like with Two Friends’ previous takes on songs by The ‘Smokers, such as their bouncy remix of “Roses”, “Break Up Every Night” should help enliven your Friday or Saturday evening.

Poland’s Clarx has done great justice to “Emily”, Two Friends’ release which I wrote about last Spring and featuring a playful vocal by James Delaney.  Clarx steered the pop-oriented “Emily” into more of a traditional house rhythm in their remix, which is magnified by some pretty big futuristic synths.   This helps make what is a very good song even better, which is exactly what a top notch remix should do.

Check out both remixes at the above links 🙂

#BILLCSTop30 #520 – October 16/17

Four debuts help keep the music flowing into the chart, as most of the songs are now an appealing pop/dance hybrid with other influences, though I always have a fond spot for a big banger 😀

The Top 10

  • Canadians Loud Luxury & Nikki’s Wives continue to hold at #1 with the irrepressible “Show Me”, whose comical video features none other than long time porn star Ron Jeremy.
  • “Perfect” is the gritty slice of deep house music by L.A.’s Mahalo featuring Cat Lewis that glides its way to #2 on the new chart.  Will it reach the top in two weeks??

  • “I Like Me Better” by Lauv (aka 23 year old Ari Leff) is finally making inroads at US radio after performing well on charts in Canada, the UK, and Sweden among others.  It climbs 5-3.
  • New to the Top 5, and a first timer for Tipsy Records, is the wistful singalong “No Love In Brooklyn” by producers Frenchman Nick Peters and western New York native Frank Pierce along with fellow Yank vocalist Scott Vega, which rises 7-5.

https://soundcloud.com/latchmeresound/need-your-heart

  • The Fastest Riser belongs to Australia-based UK producer Latchmere (the moniker of Shaun Galvin), whose Lovedrunk EP is perfect for club dance floors and of course to blast from your stereo.  The classic house rhythms of “Need Your Heart” take it 15-6 on the chart.

  • If you’re going to see Terror Jr. in Toronto this Friday (October 20) at The Drake Hotel, you will see Iowa’s Kid Froopy open the show.  The Kid’s EP is now out and its namesake first single “Drive Slow” moves up 8-7.
  • Rich production by Ricky Remedy and a stunner of a vocal from Orlando’s John.k take “Gold” up the chart 13-9.
  • “You (It’s All About You)” becomes the third Top Tenner here for Carlos Nóbrega, from his album The Art Of Making Love.  And if you want gorgeous goodies like buttons or postcards, as well as other collectibles, then head over to Carlos’ store right here“You” climbs 14-10.

Movin’ On Up

  • Every time I listen to “We Won’t Leave You” by Steve Void and Syence, it’s emotional power definitely gives me the feels.  Featuring an unbilled vocal by the fantastic Clara Mae (she also sang Steve’s “Chemistry” late last year), it rises 16-11.
  • Remixes are en route for Bobby Nourmand’s “MIND” featuring D.OC. and Goodmorning with another set of highly complimentary call-back vocals and rapping to help keep spinning EDM on its head.  “MIND” rises 17-13.
  • The US/UK duo called Culpriit (above) is well on its way with its debut single “Driveway”, which moves 24-17, and right behind is the free download with spirited vocals by blackbear and MAX, “No Hands” (below) by producers It’s Different and Forever MC, climbing 25-18.
  • Miami’s Alyx Ander’s “Wake Up For The Night” is for those with wee hour vibing featuring an Ellie Goulding-ish vocal by Caroline Pennell, and moves up 27-22.
  • Atlanta duo Halogen know good voices when the hear them, witness “Can’t Resist” featuring dazzling duo Adriana Gomez and Lub from the Porch Family (lub x tpf), and jumps 28-23.  It’s also a free download for you!

4 Debuts

https://soundcloud.com/shoffymusic/flags-feat-yuna

  • From one of my favourite albums this year so far comes “Flags” by L.A.’s Shoffy (aka Alex Shofler) featuring Yuna.  This song is available as a free download, but check out all of Shoffy’s songs from his self-titled album.  It’s full of well-produced spins on dance music, not without some big beats, but focusing on the songs and his unique vocal style.  “Flags” bows at an impressive #20.
  • Following his amazing 2017 singles “Wasted My Love” and “Out Of My Head” is L.A.’s Axel Mansoor with producer buddy Louis Vivet and your official end-of-summer song “Hit Rewind”.  As with previous singles, this one is a free download for now, but you can go and support it by picking it up on your favourite digital platform.  “Hit Rewind” arrives at #26.  Axel has yet to leave the chart since the week of April 3 which is when “Wasted My Love” premiered.

  • Another single from The Art Of Making Love makes its entrance on the chart.  This time it’s “Free” by Carlos Nóbrega featuring Spanish singer JVEL, and it debuts at #27 with its intriguing comic-book themed lyric video.

  • The last debut is by the ever-irresistible Miguel, this time paired up with Travis Scott for “Sky Walker” at #28.  Time to chillax and party down with these guys with this cool song!
